President Macony Honor Victims of the Pontra Massacre in Campaign Stop
President Macony visited the town of Pontra earlier today as part of his re-election campaign for the upcoming June 14th election, an effort to shore up his support among Gascarans after struggles over the past four years to make progress in developing the oft-neglected province amid conservative and nationalist opposition. After a moment of silence at the memorial that has been set up in the town's central square to remember those who were killed on that day, the President made a brief statement to the press.
"I believe we must honor those who lost their lives in any tragedy that has occurred on Eserian soil, whether Frezian or Gascaran or Varlesian. I have always believed we are stronger as a nation because of our diversity, that is as true today as the day I was elected nearly four years ago. The confrontation that occurred here is just another reminder that our union was not forged peacefully nor that all of its citizens have be viewed as equals. But I know that one day Eserland will become a true union of equals and I look forward to helping make that a reality sooner rather than later."
Freza League Candidate Radon Condemns President's Pontra Visit
Presidential candidate Arnold Radon of the Freza League released a statement condemning President's Macony's stop in Pontra, calling it a "great disgrace to Eserians of all ages" and a "blatant move to legitimize the claims of murder by Gascaran nationalists." The controversial candidate has made it one of his core positions to officially recognize the Pontra Massacre as an act of self-defense that should be remembered for "how it exposes the unruly nature of the Gascaran people" and the need to ensure that Gascaran's remain part of the Union "at all costs". While polling has him at third place behind AEU candidate Meredith Nelson and President Macony, thus unlikely to make it to the second round of the election, he has garnered support from a growing nationalist contingent that sees the recent actions of the Gascaran provincial government to hold an independence referendum as an affront to national unity and a rejection of an Eserian national identity. Having made gains in last year's provincial elections in Potham, they are hoping to make gains in Assembly elections that are set to concur with the first round of the presidential election on June 14th.
