33 arrested in peaceful but anti-Crown protest
Syracuse
Police and protesters remained calm as around 1000 protesters marched from the National Opera to the Royal Palace in Syracuse yesterday.
Protesters called for the 81 year old monarch and leader of Nicosia to name a successor. They also called for government transparency and a small shift closer to democracy. Police say that 33 were arrested and later released for violating hospital zone noise restrictions. "Other than chanting in a hospital zone, the protests were extremely peaceful" said a police spokesman.
Protests began last week after King Nicolas announced that he had yet to choose a successor that he would not be stepping down. Protests are also scheduled next week against the rising unemployment.
