The 50ties proved to be competitive times for economy. Only 4 years of this decade, and many has happen in the business world. Portusgalia economy goes stronger, thanks to the neutrality of the governments, and Portusgalia hasn't suffered the pains of August Catastrophe. In fact, the war was a great market for the economy, from raw materials to canned food, a traditional portusgalian industry.
The Portusgalian economy, is a capitalist paradise, the liberal laws on economy gives space to almost everything, the state almost just require one thing "pay your taxes". Competition in Portusgalia's markets is fierce. Corporations fight together for their place under the Sun. The only one who has no major concerns on this is the Orient Company, and its centenary monopoly on the Eastern markets.
Although things are changing faster, and other corporations are finding ways to get out of the "Orient rule". One of this markets for example, is the airlines. TAP (Trasportes Aérios de Portusgália), the portusgalian airliner corporation, has entered in direct competition with the Orient Company. The OC was always the traditional passenger transport provider to the East, but now, at least by ship. By sea, the OC stills the only one, but by air since 1945 it has to deal with TAP. The OC doesn't like this...
Other point that concerns the OC is the ideological foreign policies of the government in Touyou. The support to the Republicans in Yujin was a bad move for the Company. The main commercial partners within the East, Sikandara and Sixia, stand on the Imperialist side. The OC knows very well that there is a great chance on an Imperial victory. Things will go back has they where since the portusgalians first arrive at Touyou, almost closed markets in Yujin. This time the Company can't effort to lose the opportunity to take advantage of the civil war in Yujin. The portusgalian politics are reluctant in supporting the imperialists, since they regard them has "persona non grata" due to their isolation towards foreigners.
But the OC is in fact a great lobby in the politics of Portusgalia, and the OC knows it has the power to change that. The Republicans where defeated, and the Foreign Affairs Bureau is humiliated with the situation, a bonus for the OC. In the other side, Sikandara is a great commercial partner of Portusgalia, and the government tend to act in a pacifist way, by asking for peace, instead of taking a position and support Sikandara in the "Long Sea Issue". Other point that the Company desires to change. Key factors made the Company take a position, and talk to the right persons within Sikandara. The Director of the West, Professor Armando Sousa, is the man running the business of the Company within the area of Sikandara, and smuggling Vangalan products.
It is a very cult man, not a the typical business man. In fact he is formed in Economics, but it is also formed in History, and is fascinated by the History of Sikandara. The Consistorium could not effort to put aside such a man in Sikandara. Many years in front of the business made him friend of many Sikandaran great personalities, one of them is the President of the Chamber of Commerce.
He invites the President of the Chamber of Commerce to a dinner at is home in Akbariyeh, the Sikandaran city where the Department of the West is based. The Professor sends his "chauffeur" to pick up the President and bring him home. A great dinner is set... But first a coupe of tea, or a glass of Port Wine.
Professor Armando Sousa: My dear friend, how are you? I home the journey wasn't very harsh for you, Sikandara is so big that you need days to get from a point to the other!
