We are happy with the promises by the Carian Despotate and the Free State of Sounio that naval traffic in the Long Sea won't be hampered and that the conflict will stay within the borders of Caria. We will continue to watch the situation with care.

Eiffelland honours the dead

Officially the 2nd of November is All Souls Day, the day at which the Tiburan Catholic Church honours the dead. But already in the afternoon of the 1st of November, All Saints Day, the Eiffellandians go to the graves of their beloved. They clean the graves, put fresh flowers on them, and pray for their deceased beloved ones. This day is a public holiday in Eiffelland. Only the flower shops are open on this day, and only in the morning. Then, in the morning of the 2nd of November, all Eiffellandians go to Church for a special Mass to honour and pray for the dead. In the morning of the 2nd of November, the working day starts 1 hour later than normal, and also ends 1 hour later than normal. At least when the 2nd of November is a working day. This year the 2nd of November is a Sunday, which is a resting day by default. So no shifting of working hours will take place on this year's 2nd of November.

Burgundian company Ghent Automobiles builds factory in Bremen

The Burgundian company Ghent Automobiles and the Municipality of Bremen have agreed on a location for the factory Ghent is planning to build in Eiffelland. Ghent will use this factory to serve the market in Souhern Germania and Northeastern Hymiar, as well as further to the East. Bremen was chosen because of its location in relation with the Long Sea: It is situated on the southernmost tip of Eiffelland, completely with a large harbour and excellent railway connections into Girta, Újország and Eiffelland itself.

Tuberculosis outbreak on Eiffellandian cruiser

Today it became known that one of the navy officers on the Eiffellandian cruiser Aachen was sent to the ship lazarett because of a tuberculosis infection. The Aachen, which is currently on patrol in the seas between Nichtstein and Caria, has been put under quarantine. It's mission has been taken over by several destroyers in the neighbourhood, and it is currently traveling back to its homeport Lübeck. The navy officer who fell ill has already been taken from the ship. Currently he is treated in the Navy hospital in Bremen.

Joint Statement by the Carian City States' Summit in Antikyra
We are concerned about the health of the Eiffellander sailors in proximity to us. If there are any more similar cases we would be more than willing to provide medical or any other form of care. While a militarisation of our seaborders with Nichtstein is concerning we understand it is a necessary step for the protection of the latter during a period of instability in our own nation and we trust that Eiffelland will act in a solely defensive manner.

We assure the Carian City States' Summit in Antikyra that the presence of any Eiffellandian military vessels in the waters between Nichtstein and Caria are there for a defensive mission and will act solely in a defensive manner. We also assure that there is no need for any concern about the health of our sailors. They are all in an excellent condition. However, in the case of a patient with a serious disease like tuberculosis, we have to take appropriate measures. Therefore, the Aachen is in quarantine. Tuberculostatics have already been transported to the Aachen, as well as all other medical supplies that are needed. We thank the Carian City States' Summit in Antikyra for their offer for medical support; however, given the currently unstable situation in Caria, we think it would be better not to ask for any supplies they might need themselves in the very near future, especially given the fact that we have all the needed materials ourselves.
Up to now, only one patient with tuberculosis was diagnosed at the Aachen. The patient in question is currently being treated in Bremen. There are no new cases of tuberculosis at this moment. However, the ship will remain in quarantine until we know for sure that nobody else is ill.

Grand Duchy of Nichtstein

Neither the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein nor the Kingdom of Eiffelland harbour any aggressive or interventionist intentions towards the City States. We appreciate the City States' understanding that times of instability logically entail an increase in security measures. The Grand Duchy hopes for a rapid solution to internal Carian problems, brought forward and decided upon by Carians.

Quarantine of SMs Aachen lifted

During his weekly press conference, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz announced that the quarantine of the SMs Aachen has been lifted. The Aachen, currently docked at its home port Lübeck, has been declared tuberculosis-free. No new cases of Tuberculosis were diagnosed since the first case emerged on 14 November. The complete crew has been examined by means of Mantoux-diagnosis and chest X-rays. Furthermore, the complete ship, including its water pipes, has been cleaned.
The sailor who fell ill on the Aachen is still treated at the university hospital in Bremen. The Chancellor described his situation as "severely ill but stable". He also revealed that the sailor was not infected by the bacterium normally causing tuberculosis, but by a bacterium that usually does not cause illness among humans and that is family of the tuberculosis bacterium. It remains unclear why this sailor fell ill because of this bacterium. His doctors are doing what they can to cure him, and are investigating everything they can. Upon a question from a journalist, the Chancellor re-iterated that no other sailor has fallen ill after the Aachen was put under quarantine. He also reacted on rumours that Prince Ludwig would be serving at the Aachen during the quarantine, and actually confirmed that the Prince is serving on another Navy vessel.

Government starts humanitarian aid campaign for Caria

Chancellor Graf von Seydewit announced during his weekly press conference that a humanitarian aid campaign would be started for Caria soon. "There is quite a lot going on there. It is a bit tricky to call it a civil war due to the constitutional structure of Caria, but it is safe to state that there is a war going on between many of Caria's city states. A military intervention by us is still not the right move, but we have to help the civilians out. We will send medical supplies and food. It is also an option to send a regiment of our medical troops complete with field hospitals, but we will only do so if the Carians allow us to do so. A request for that has been sent to the Assembly of the Carian City States in Antikyra," said the Chancellor.

The Executive Assembly would like to thank the Kingdom of Eiffelland for their crucial aid to a neighboring nation in despair
as well as their respect of our sovereignty. The Executive Assembly of the Carian City States in Antikyra gladly gives the Eiffellander Army's Medical Corps persmission to carry out their humanitarian relief tasks within Caria. As with their Camdenite counterparts the Eiffellander troops taking part in this humanitarian operation will be decorated. Since they are military personnel and not civilian volunteers they will be decorated with the Medal of Military Merit.

We thank you for the permission to send in a regiment of our medical troops. We also thank in advance on behalf of our medical troops for receivingthe Medal of Military Merit. We will start deploying them immediately. Humanitarian aid is being prepared as we speak. If there is an airport where our cargo planes can land, we can fly things in. Otherwise we can organise droppings to meet the acute needs and send more goods by ship.

Bourgogne and Eiffelland sign defence deal

Today it became known that the governments of Bourgogne and Eiffelland closed a defence deal about the development of two new jet fighter aircrafts. The Eiffellandian company Dassau Flugzeugwerke (OOC: ) will cooperate with the Burgundian armed forces in the development of both planes. One of the two planes will be designed for starting from an aircraft carrier like the ones in the Eiffellandian Navy. The other one will be designed as both an air superiority fighter and a fighter-bomber; this plane is destined to replace the J24 and J29 jet fighters currently used by the Air Force. One of the two aircraft will really become a Burgundian-Eiffellandian project, while Burgundy will stay on the background of the development of the aircraft carrier plane. Currently the Air Force is replacing the old propeller fighter planes with the Mysterium II supersonic fighter.
It also became known that Eiffelland will buy 50,000 new battle rifles from the Burgundian company Fusil National, with the possibility to obtain a production licence after purchasing an additional 20,000 battle rifles.

Police arrest hundreds of GEL-members

This weekend the Police and the Staatsschutz arrested hundreds of GEL-members. Meeting places of the GEL were raided, and people were arrested at home. A spokesperson of the Police indicated that all these GEL-members had been arrested on charges of murder and severe maltreatment, mainly of immigrants, people descending from immigrants, and homosexuals: "It took us a while to get all the charges complete, but as soon as that was the case, we took action." The vast majority of the people the police wanted to arrest have been arrested, but not all. Some managed to flee, and some committed suicide upon arrestment. Roland Meißner, the leader of the GEL, died in a car accident when trying to flee for the police.
Chancellor Von Seydewitz commented from the Chancellery that "the GEL effectively has been dismantled and does not form a threat to minorities and homosexuals any more. I congratulate the Police and the Staatsschutz for their success, and thank them for their work this weekend." Politicians from both the coalition and the opposition reacted positively, although the LDP (Socioliberals) indicated that there was a chance that the remaining members of the GEL could go underground, so that they form a far more hidden threat than the directly visible threat the GEL formed. The political leader of the Volksunion, Günther Ziesche, furiously condemned this weekend's arrestments, indicated that "these people were not arrested for murder or maltreatment, but for their opinions", and called the arrestments "a flagrant attack against Freedom of Speech".

Positive year for Eiffellandian industries

According to the financial results presented by various Eiffellandian companies last week, the Eiffellandian industries had a good year last year. Sales increased upon the introduction of new products and new car models. Last year the Rathenau Gruppe introduced the transistor radio, the pharmaceutical companies presented several new products (among others Polio vaccines), and the car industries introduced new car models. 1955 could be a more difficult year, though. The automotive industries will face more competition from companies outside Eiffelland, and the Rathenau Gruppe is not the only manufacturer of the transistor radio any more since the Senecan company Avopoly introduced their "pocket radio". A spokesperson of the Rathenau Gruppe indicated that "we are researching further to make our transistor radio better and also smaller. Technology is developed further and further, and we will not get behind, I can assure you that."

NATIONAL HEADLINES

 Nichtsteiner, Eiffellander police in joint anti-GEL raids. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice and Police has confirmed that Eiffellander police officers were operating alongside Nichtsteiner police on a wave of raids that targetted GEL activists within Nichtstein. "The police action took place within the framework of the Eiffellander-Nichtsteiner treaties on cross-border police cooperation and based on search warrants issued by the Kingdom of Eiffelland," the spokesman confirmed. The Ministry also rejected any rumours that suspects were being automatically handed over to the Kingdom and passed across the border. "I will remind you that there is a judicial procedure and a review by the Courts established under the treaties and by the national legislation of the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein. Suspects, be they Nichtsteiner or Eiffellander, will face extradition hearings. There is no automatic extradition, but yes, the Kingdom and the Grand Duchy may mutually extradite their own citizens wanted by the other Party to the agreements, provided proper judicial procedure is followed and such extradition is authorised by the Courts."

I want to thank the Nichtsteiner Police for their cooperation in dismantling this horrible organisation. Let it be clear that justice will prevail, and that all applicable laws will be followed when suspects are extradited.

OOC: The posts 275 and 276 of this thread were changed, so that Telora has the room to develop the second Polio vaccine.

In real life, the developers of the polio vaccines, Salk and Sabin, continuously fought with each other about the question which vaccine would be better. They continued to do so in the elderly home, where they chased and threatened each other with their canes because of this dispute.

Navy announce large exercise in Long Sea

Today the Navy announced that it will hold a large exercise in the Long Sea South-East of Bremen. The reason why this location is chosen, is that it is possible there to exercise far away from the usual routes of commercial vessels, and that it is far away from any territorial waters, so that no accidental violations of foreign territory will take place. The Ministry for Defence indicated that the area where the exercises will be held are territorial waters, and will be clearly marked. Vessels not taking part in the exercise are strongly adviced to stay outside the area where the exercises will be held.

Eiffelland sends troops to Cyclopeia

Upon approval by the Staatstag and the Staatsrat, Eiffelland has started deploying units of the 3rd Army and several wings of the Air Force to Cyclopeia. Also the exercise of the carrier fleet has been aborted, so that this fleet can be deployed near Cyclopeia. During his press conference, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz stated that "the attack by the Junta against the Amarysian League was uncalled for and inappropriate in a country that is trying to recover from a bloody civil war. We cannot lean back in such a situation, but have to do everything we can to prevent a humanitary disaster from happening."
During the debate in the Staatstag, it appeared that the government had already ordered the deployment of 23,000 men of the 3rd Army to Cyclopeia, something the opposition was not happy with but the parties of the governing coalition supported "given the circumstances the government had to operate in".
During the debate, the government made clear that all medical troops active in the Junta had been retreated, but had to leave their equipment behind. Additional medical troops will be sent to the Amarysian League and the Duchy of Oenotria and Antikyra. 5000 additional troops will be sent to the League and the Duchy, and 5000 paratroopers will be kept ready for deployment as well.

Eiffelland mobilises 3rd Army

A government proposal to mobilise the entire 3rd Army passed both Chambers of Parliament. Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz indicated that "if the Duchy and the League win this war, former Cyclopeia will have hardly a Ground Army left. Almost the complete Ground Army went to the Junta, while the League obtained the largest part of the Navy and the Duchy the largest part of the Air Force. So one of the results of the defeat of the Junta will be the annihilation of large parts of the Ground Army of Former Cyclopeia. In that case, the League and the Duchy will be unable to defend themselves against external threats. That can destabilise the complete region. Therefore, we have to take responsibility. We will go to Former Cyclopeia as friends and will help the Cyclopeians to defend themselves until they have built up a new Ground Army. That is our long-term goal. But of course there is a short-term goal as well. It is of utmost importance that the Junta is defeated. A fascist Cyclopeia will also be a destabilising factor in our region. We cannot let that happen. We must stabilise Cyclopeia to keep the region stable, and to keep the Long Sea a safe sea strait."
The Conservative Christian party PCL and the Socioliberal SLP voted in favour, together with the coalition parties (the Christiandemocratic CDV and the Market Liberal FDV). The Sociodemocratic SPE, the Communist KPE, the Pacifist PRL and the far-right VU voted against.

IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT OF SIKANDARA
COUNCIL FOR DIPLOMACY

PRIVATE COMMUNIQUE

The Imperial Government would like to inform our friends in Trier that following the stabilisation of the situation in the East, our commitments to the Kingdom of Eiffelland, vis-a-vis the supply of oil and petroleum, have been normalised and shall be conducted as they had been prior to the escalation of disturbances in the east. We are further mindful of the importance of a smooth supply of oil to our friends during a period of strategic engagement in the country of Cyclopeia.
