Chancellor repeats Nicosian King's call for conference about Long Sea

During a short interview, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz stated his desire for a conference about the future of the western part of the Long Sea. "This sea strait is very important not only to the countries around it, but also to the rest of the world. It is not good if only one bloc of nations, even if it were the EDF, determines which ship can pass through the Long Sea and which ship cannot. Furthermore, the region can only prosper if we achieve a balance all countries can agree on. To achieve that balance, we need to talk," the Chancellor said.

His Majesty's Government is deeply concerned about the apparent uncertainty in the international community at to the future status of important passages in international waters which are necessary for the maintenance of essential international commerce and transport. Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz is wise in his proposition that a formal conference should be held so that the international community can affirm its commitment to free and open waters unobstructed by any nation or alliance. Breotonia as the Protector of the Sea and as a major non-warring power would welcome all nations to come to Lunden with the aim of formulating the text of such an agreement to which all present would promise their commitment. Such a conference would be open to every nation, as every nation carries out commerce through this vital body of water and would not exclude nations currently at war.

My call for this conference originates from the King of Nicosia. He was the one initially proposing it. I only repeated his proposal. If he agrees with setting up that conference in Lunden, we will agree with it.

Secretary Steel,

While find the idea of an international conference on security of international waters important, we must stress the importance of the conference we suggested. We must determine a future for the Long Sea region. The so called 'international community' is completely uncertain at all times. If you seek the international community to accomplish anything as significant as ensuring the security of the seas, you may be looking in the wrong place. Nicosia approached the international community for a solution to its crisis with Solaren. Despite our skepticism, we are willing to attend such a conference. However, we must state that we will continue to pursue our conference and give it precedence.

His Majesty's Government respects most completely the intention that the Nicosian Government has in mind but it is the firm belief of His Majesty's Government that the authority which is to be trusted with the protection of the users of the Long Sea, and all international waterways rests firmly with the Royal Navy as it has for centuries. Furthermore, any arrangement reached that neglected to grant the right of neutral flags free and unhindered passage across the open sea reached by any group or community will find itself in direct contravention of the Mantle and any attempt to enforce such policies will result in immidiate retribution by the Royal Navy.

We are perfectly certain that Nicosia is well aware of our position on this matter.

As you surely must be aware, we have no intention of hindering the free passage of ships through the International Waters of the Long Sea. The summit was not meant to discuss the Long Sea itself, but for the general region. Furthermore, the meeting was meant to be for general discussions about the future of Solaren and to discuss the repercussions of the war on the region. This meeting was meant to strengthen bonds between certain Long Sea parties to ensure a future peace. However, it appears that some nations have no interest in such a meeting.

As you know, Nicosia is a fierce defendant of international laws and customs and will not breach them. However, ships should be aware that the vicinity of Nicosia and Solaren is, in fact, a war zone.

At this moment, the safety in the Long Sea and the future of Solaren are topics clearly linked to each other. Therefore, it is needed to discuss them together in our opinion. I suggest to combine the meeting in Nicosia with the one in Lunden.

Government issues general mobilisation

In response to the general mobilisation in our neighbourcountry Winnemark, the Government has decided to issue a general mobilisation. All longer furloughs have been suspended. In a press conference, Chancellor Von Seydewitz stated:

"In the past days, the Government of Winnemark has repeatedly expressed its rejection for our way of life. Of course, that all is allowed. It is allowed to disagree about which system is the best. But the Engellexic attack on Montelimar without reason and the Platter attack on Lorraine without reason make clear that we cannot be blind for what is happening around us. Winnemark's repeated expressions of support for Engellex's heinous attack without reason on Montelimar, Winnemark's repeated and unproven accusations against the EDF and Winnemark's general mobilisation gives us no room to give King Wilhelm of Winnemark the benefit of the doubt with regards to his plans with our country. Therefore, we will issue a general mobilisation as well.
At this moment, our complete way of life is at stake. At this moment, the GalloGermanian tradition of freedom and democracy is at stake. At this moment, a political system that has guaranteed peace and prosperity in GalloGermania since the end of the Great War is at stake. At this moment, the world seems to not want to know that the EDF has never attacked a country during its existence. Queen Charlotte of Engellex and King Wilhelm of Winnemark have repeatedly accused the EDF of warmongering and destabilising GalloGermania, without presenting any evidence. King Wilhelm of Winnemark even refuses to present the evidence. This is not about settling problems, this is about two people wanting a war.
I myself can clearly proove, that the EDF never fired the first shot in whichever conflict they were involved. We will respect Winnemark's sovereignty. This means that we will not be the first ones to shoot or cross borders. We expect Winnemark to do the same."

Government freezes all assets of the Platte Confederation in Eiffelland

In response to the Platter attack on Lorraine, the Government decided to freeze all Platter assets in Eiffelland. Eiffelland's ambassador to the Platte Confederation has been summoned to Trier for consultations. Furthermore, the ambassador of the Platte Confederation in Eiffelland has been summoned by the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Statement from the Council of Bredenbeck
On behalf of His Majesty King William II

The Council of Bredenbeck notes that it is exactly this type of threatening rhetoric from the European Defence Federation that has caused the Holy Kingdom of Winnemark to initiate their general mobilisation as a purely defensive measure against a Federation pre-emptive strike. We are concerned by the way that Chancellor Von Seydewitz has interpreted our move and escalated the situation. We again reiterate that our mobilisation was made with purely defensive motives. We hope that Eiffelland maintains their pledge, and we encourage them to look elsewhere with their armed forces if they seek to push back against the Great Engellex Union.

As such a mobilization by Solaren was a precursor to that nation's attack and subsequent declation of war on Lorraine, His Majesty's government supports Eiffelland's mobilization in response to a similar mobilization by the Kingdom of Winnemark. Though responding in like did not prevented Lorraine from being attacked, it did limit any futher attacks. Though not responding in kind to such a mobilization by its neighbor as Montelimar had done would be the prefered reaction by Winnemark, a similar reaction by Montelimar did not prevent Engellex from attacking them. It is far better to be prepared against Engellex and her allies than to be sorry after their bombs start dropping on your cities.

Press room in Chancellery

Journalists of several newspapers, newssites and broadcasting stations have gathered together. Behind the table Minister for Internal Affairs Philipp Neubauer and Minister for Justice Peter Steinhauer.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this press conference. Of course there are more pressing things going on at the moment, but we considered it needed to explain something about the terrorist attacks in Eiffelland in the first half of this year, and about the NRBA,” Minister Neubauer starts. He takes a sip of his water, and then continues.

“On 21 April of this year, White Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, a bomb exploded in Trier, in the underground station Friedrich von Dietzdamm. Nine people died and 20 people were severely wounded. Examining the camera images revealed that somebody had been seen with a briefcase on the platform before the explosion but without that briefcase in the hall above the platform after the explosion. A picture of that man was published and broadcasted. Two months later, we managed to arrest that man. He was a member of the NRBA.
On 30 April of this year, a bomb exploded in the shopping area of Ingelheim. 20 people were killed and 100 people were injured. On 6 May of this year, a bomb exploded in the central station of Wetzlar. 40 people were killed. On that same day, the responsibility was claimed by the Neue Rote Befreiungsarmee. Demands followed later: The release of the last two living members of an extremist leftwing terrorist group from the 1970s: The Rote Befreiungsarmee.
From then onwards, the NRBA planned several terrorist attacks, but we managed to discover and prevent them.
On 7 July of this year, several terrorist attacks had been planned by the NRBA, but we managed to prevent them all and arrest the people installing the bombs. Seven more people were arrested 3 days later.
One of the people arrested is Joachim Freiherr von Weizenburg, former owner of Weizenburg Spedition. He was the leader of the NRBA. Two employees of the Staatsschutz have been arrested as well: Jens Karstens, Leitender Staatsschutzdirektor, and Fritz Patke, Staatsschutzhauptmeister. They were informants to Von Weizenburg in the Staatsschutz and kidnapped wife and children of the Staatsschutz officer in charge of the investigations regarding the NRBA. The wife of this Staatsschutz officer was even killed by Von Weizenburg in front of the husband’s eyes.
But now the most extraordinary part of the story: The NRBA presented itself as an extremist leftwing organisation but was in fact an extremist rightwing organisation. All people arrested were linked to the far right movement. We did not find out why these people presented themselves as extremist leftwingers, but it is easy to deduct that they were trying to destabilise the country and wanted to push it to the far right. Mr. Ziesche from the Volksunion clearly acted according to this scheme with his speech on 18 June.
I also have to say that we did not find proof that the NRBA acted with the knowledge of or even on behalf of the far right movement.”

Then the Minister for Justice takes over. “Next week, the trial against the members of the NRBA will start. Charges filed are among others high treason, membership of a terrorist organisation, planning and conducting terrorist attacks, kidnapping, burglary, disturbance of domestic peace and murder. Some trials will be conducted behind closed doors to preserve the privacy of the victims.”

Provincial elections in Sauerland
Christiandemocrats win; Volksunion looses all seats

The provincial elections in Sauerland led to a landslide in terms of seat redistribution, at least for Eiffellandian notions. Most striking is, that the extremist rightwing Volksunion was voted out of Parliament. Furthermore, the parties forming the national government gained seats with the Christiandemocrats as clear winner of the elections.

These are the results of today's provincial elections:
CDV (Christiandemocrats): Was 24, now 30.
SPE (Sociodemocrats): Was 29, now 24.
FDV (Rightwing liberals): Was 21, now 22.
SLU (Socioliberals): Was 10, now 12.
Grünen (Environmentalists): Was 10, now 8.
PCL (Conservative Christians): Was 1, now 3.
KPE (Communists): Was 2, now 1.
Volksunion (Extremist rightwing): Was 3, now 0.

A loss of seats for the Volksunion was anticipated given the terrorist attacks earlier this year, which turned out to have been committed by an extremist rightwing group. It was, however, not expected that the Volksunion would be forced to leave the provincial parliament.
Normally, the political parties forming the national government have to suffer from a decline in popularity, but that did not happen in these elections. It is not clear whether the current war efforts are the reason for this or not. Fact is that Chancellor Von Seydewitz is quite popular, and that may have led to the massive seat gain for the Christiandemocrats.
The Sociodemocrats are still suffering from a decline in popularity, started with the fall of Horst Jörgens last year. The current political leader of the Sociodemocrats, Hans‑Jochen Rudersbach, still hasn't managed to stop this downwards trend.
The PCL went from 1 to 3 seats; this could be explained by ex-voters for the Volksunion who switched to this party.
Currently the prime-minister of Sauerland is a Sociodemocrat. It is not clear yet how the new coalition will look like. The athmosphere in the current government between Sociodemocrats and Christiandemocrats is good, so a continuation of that coalition could be feasible, this time with a Christiandemocratic prime-minister. But it remains to be seen if that will happen. If the Sociodemocrats indeed leave the Sauerlander provincial government, Niedereiffel will be the only province with Sociodemocrats in the government.
The results of these elections will also lead to a change in seats in the Staatsrat: The Christiandemocrats will gain one seat and the Sociodemocrats will loose one seat.

Scholars raise 10 million Eiffelland Mark through nation-wide charity events

Last Friday was filled with charity events throughout Eiffelland. Scholars of all secondary schools raised money with sponsor runs and all kinds of day jobs. The initiative was started at the Königliches Gymnasium in Trier. When it turned out that other schools in Trier were planning charity events as well, the scholars of those schools decided to combine their forces. Later on, all sedondary schools first in Trier and then all over the country joined in. Prince Ludwig was spotted in an elderly home helping out the nurses there, while at the same time doing his duties as one of the main organisers of the event. One of the nurses commented that she had never seen a man multitasking that well. The result of all the efforts was made public during parties at all schools last Friday night.

Coalition negotiations in Sauerland come to an end; CDV and FDV will govern together
New provincial government in Sauerland

The coalition negotiations in Sauerland have been closed successfully. The Christiandemocrats and the Rightwing Liberals form the new coalition after relatively long negotiations. In the previous government, the Christiandemocrats and the Sociodemocrats governed in harmony under a Sociodemocratic minister-president, but the Sociodemocrats decided to leave the government after the loss of seats in the last provincial elections. With the start of the new coalition in Sauerland, the province Obereiffel is the only province left with the Sociodemocrats in the government.

Members of NRBA sentenced to long-term imprisonments

Today the trials against the members of the NRBA, the extremist rightwing group led by Joachim Freiherr von Weizenburg, came to an end. All members were sentenced to longterm imprisonments and varying durations of forced labour. None of the sentences was less than 30 years, and life imprisonment was heard several imes. In its end conclusion, the court condemned in very strong words how the NRBA had committed three assaults and planned several other assaults, among others assaults to kill “thousands of teenagers and students”, and how the group had planned to commit ten assaults on 7 July of this year. The trial against Joachim von Weizenburg and four other members of the NRBA was conducted behind closed doors to maintain the anonymity of the victims of some particular deeds. Von Weizenburg himself was sentenced to life imprisonment and 20 years forced labour, the other four were sentenced to 45 years imprisonment with 10 years forced labour.
The trials against Leitender Direktor des Staatsschutzes Jens Karstens and Staatsschutzhauptmeister Roger Patke were conducted in public. Karstens was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment, of which 10 years forced labour, for massively leaking information to Von Weizenburg and the extremist rightwing scene, and the kidnapping of wife and children of the leader of the investigations against the NRBA. Patke was sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years forced labour for the kidnapping of wife and children of the leader of the investigations against the NRBA, and the murder on Staatsschutzhauptmeister Schneider.
A notable detail of the verdict against Von Weizenburg was the seizure of his fortune, except 2 million Eiffelland Mark he destined for his two children. The Von Weizenburg fortune, estimated at around 100 million Eiffelland Mark, will be used to pay compensations to the people that were wounded during the terrorist assaults and to the relatives of the people who died during the assaults.

Das Gläserne Haus

The public broadcaster “Radio Eiffelland 2”, a broadcaster mainly focusing on a young public, has announced that it will raise funds for the victims of the current wars by letting 3 DJs broadcast in a house made of glass. That house will be placed on the Alexanderplatz in Trier. The DJs will enter the house on 18 December and will stay there until 24 December. They will play music on request, but each song request will have to be accompanied with a donation. During their days in the house made of glass, they will not eat but only drink water, milk and fruit juices. Several Eiffellandian celebrities already announced that they would cooperate with this action. Crown-Prince Friedrich will lock the three DJs up in the glas house on 18 December.

Eiffelland conditionally recognises SNC as provisional government of Solaren

After several negotiation rounds and mediation by the government of Vangala, Carentania and the EDF have reached an agreement on the future of Solaren. This was announced earlier, but now the details of the agreement have been made public. Part of the agreement is the recognition of the SNC as the provisional government of Solaren until a new government has been formed after democratic elections. An objection from the Eiffellandian government against doing so was handled by extending the SNC with representatives from additional parts of the Solaris society so that it represents all the people of Solaren instead of only the Solaris exiles in Carentania. A spokesperson of the Eiffellandian government stated that “the aim of the efforts by Carentania and the EDF in Solaren is to create a society in which the rights of individuals and minorities are protected, and that an economic system is installed that gives everyone the possibility to develop his or her skills and earn a good living with it and at the same time protects everyone from being exploited”.

OOC: About “Das gläserne Haus”, I copied that from the action “Serious Request” by the Dutch radio broadcaster 3FM. For details please see . Meanwhile also the Belgian broadcaster Studio Brussel, the Swiss broadcasters Couleur 3, DRS 3 and SF Zwei, the Swedish broadcasters SR P3 and Din Gata 100.6, and the Kenyan broadcaster Ghetto Radio carry out such an action.

Elbebruck conference in progress

Diplomats from Wendmark, Wiese, Franken, Danmark and Eiffelland are currently discussing the last details of a mutual defence pact between the memberstates of the Germanian League. During his weekly press conference, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz had explained the reasons behind this defence pact.

The Germanian League stands for values that must be defended. It is our aim that the memberstates of the Germanian League will defend those values together. The current events in our part of the world do not leave us an alternative. We are currently in a situation in which wars start out of the blue, because of a feud of long way back in the past, after a feeble justification or just because a government wants to show that its country is still alive. In such a situation, it is needed that countries sharing values act together.

Currently Eiffelland is a member of the military alliance EDF. On the question whether the mutual defence pact of the Germanian League would conflict with Eiffelland’s membership of the EDF, the Chancellor answered:

It is very unlikely that that would happen. In our part of the world, the interests of the EDF and the Germanian League are the same with regards to regional stability. Furthermore, the relations of the EDF with Wendmark, Wiese and Danmark are very good.
But despite that, the EDF and the Germananian League are two different organisations. The EDF-memberstates cooperate militarily to a high extent, so that our armed forces are more or less integrated. We share equipment, and our information systems are linked. Furthermore, the nature of the EDF would make it possible that Eiffellandian soldiers would travel abroad to defend Anglyn, Guyana or Aquitania. Furthermore, our general Modersohn currently acts as supreme commander of the EDF troops in Solaren.
Such a military integration will not take place in the Germanian League. It is only focused on mutual defence. Furthermore, Wiese, Wendmark and Danmark will not suddenly become EDF-members. Their armed forces will only defend the memberstates of the Germanian League. It won’t be possible to demand Wieser troops for the defence of Lorraine.
In the very unlikely case that Wiese, Wendmark or Danmark gets into a conflict with an EDF-memberstate that is not a member of the Germanian League, Franken and Eiffelland will take up a mediating role.

Cabinet Von Seydewitz I: How is it going?

With the start of the Cabinet von Seydewitz I, Eiffelland entered a turbulent era. 2010 was already a year of large changes. Many processes at the ministries were streamlined by abolishing or simplifying procedures. Because of this, one-third of the civil servants were not needed any more. But not only that. The bureaucratic burden on teachers, people working in health care and people working in public welfare became quite a lot smaller, so that these professionals could spend more time on the task they had been hired for and were not constantly told how to do their jobs by people lacking the appropriate knowledge. Furthermore, the old curriculum for the secondary schools was reintroduced. Quite a lot of changes, but the teachers and the professionals in health care and public welfare were glad.
Then 2011 came. First the terrorist attacks by the NRBA, and then The War. Von Seydewitz turned into a capable leader in both cases. Now he is leading a country at war, and he even manages to push through a measure that is normally lethal to an Eiffellandian politician, simply because he manages to convince people that it is needed at this moment. Indeed, we are talking about the introduction of the speed limit at the motorways. A measure he promised to abolish again when the war would end.
The budget for 2012 was also discussed in 2011. Apart from a small increase of the defence budget and an inflational correction for the educational budget and the budget for public health and welfare, all budgets were lowered, leading to a 2% decrease of the governmental budget. 2012 will mark the beginning of a more sober system for social security in which it becomes more difficult to get an allowance and the allowances are lower than they used to be.
It remains to be seen how Von Seydewitz will perform in the last 2 years of his term, but the first signs are promising.

New army unit filled with computer specialists

One of the changes in the defence policy is an army division focused on cyberwarfare. This division will be filled with computer specialists whose task will consist of analysing all possible sorts of cyberwarware and defend the country against cyberattacks. According to a spokesperson of the Ministry for Defence, cyberwarfare will become increasingly important in warfare as a whole, and then it would be better to prepare.

Defence pact of Germanic League ratified by Eiffelland

After the Staatstag had voted in favour of the new defence pact of the Germanic League (with only the Grünen, the Communist KP and the far-right VU voting against), the Staatsrat voted in favour as well (again with only the Grünen, the Communist KP and the far-right VU voting against). Today King Albrecht signed the treaty, and with that the Mutual Defence Pact of the Germanic League has been ratified.
It was a surprise to the Chancellor that he got so overwhelming majorities in the Staatstag and Staatsrat. Spokespersons of the SPE, the SLU and the PCL commented that Eiffelland did not have an alternative to the EDF and the Germanic League. "We share a lot of cultural characteristics with the countries of the EDF, and the countries of the Germanic League are our natural allies. Therefore, Eiffelland's place is in the EDF and the GL," a spokespersion of the Socioliberals said. The KP and the Grünen would prefer to see Eiffelland in the RDTO, while the VU would prefer to see Eiffelland cooperating with countries like Kiyv, Yujin or the Sarmatias.
It is also in the light of the Germanic League Defence Pact that the defence budget was increased. Currently the Ministry for Defence is replacing the equipment that was lost during the war in Solaren, but it is planned to increase the size of the armed forces as well. Also the purchase of a fourth aircraft carrier is discussed. Meanwhile, the setup of the cyberwarfare division is going according to plan. The setup of a second cyberwarfare division is being discussed.

OOC: Please see for the abbreviations SPE, SLU, KP, VU and PCL.

Europalandian ambassador to Eiffelland summoned by Minister for Foreign Affairs

Today Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor Rudolph Kögler summoned the Europalandian ambassador in Eiffelland to to discuss the recent events in Europaland. According to a spokesperson of the Ministry, the Minister re-iterated to the ambassador that checking diplomatic mail is a very serious violation of international right, and strongly condemned the fact that the Danziger diplomatic mail in Europaland was checked by Europalandian officials. "The Europalandian authorities should have discussed their suspicions or indications that the Danziger diplomatic mail was used for smuggling activities with the Danziger government. That is the proper way to handle such situations," as said by the spokesperson of the Ministry.
Furthermore, the Eiffellandian concerns about the recent occupation of the Danziger embassy in Europa City were discussed. "Apparently, it is simple to setup such an occupation in Europaland. And then no diplomat is safe," as said by the spokesperson of the Ministry.

I will be happy to meet with Mr Kögler to discuss the tragic events in Europa City and what my nation will do to ensure such an incident is never repeated. With regards to the mail being searched this policy has now ceased and our President has stated that in future our authorities will prioritise cooperation with the nation concerned. We value our relationship with Eifelland and hope it shall not be unduly damaged as a result of what has happened.

Danmark and Franken notified, Wiese not
Massive military exercises in Western Kyiv

When the government of Kyiv announced a massive military exercise in Western Kyiv, the governments of Franken and Danmark were notified but Kyiv's neighbourcountry Wiese was not. The official statement from the Eiffellandian Chancellery was that the military exercise would be followed "with caution", but anonymous officials tell that quite a lot of questions arose from this behaviour. In fact, Danmark and Franken are no neighbourcountries of Kyiv, but Wiese is. The Kievan government even invited Danish observers to the military exercises. The reasoning behind these actions is unclear, but the fact that Kyiv did not inform its neighbourcountry about these massive military exercises, in which even the roads, railroads and airspace are blocked, is a clear insult to the Wieser Government. Although not officially stated, the Eiffellandian Government is displeased over this course of affairs as well. A response is discussed.
