Eiffelland closes embassy in Kyiv

During a press conference, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz announced that Eiffelland recalls its ambassador to Kyiv with immediate effect upon the bombing of the Wieser embassy earlier today. Furthermore, all Eiffellandian diplomats in Kyiv will be recalled as well, leading to the closure of the Eiffellandian embassy in Kyiv. A negative travel advice to Kyiv for Eiffellandians is issued as well, and all Eiffellandians currently in Kyiv are adviced to leave the country as soon as possible.
A total of 20 people, among which the Wendmarker ambassador Rudolf Weissweiler and the Wieser legate, were killed earlier today when a subterranean bomb exploded under the Wieser embassy in Kyiv.

Eiffellandian embassy in Kyiv remains open with reduced staff; ambassador to Kyiv stays in Eiffelland

Earlier on, it was announced that the Eiffellandian embassy in Kyiv would be closed. Upon advice from the ambassador to Kyiv, who is currently in Trier, the embassy will not be closed, but the diplomatic staff will be reduced. Eiffellandians currently in Kyiv who do not belong to the diplomatic staff staying in Kyiv are still adviced to leave the country. Furthermore, the travel warning for Kyiv remains in effect. The ambassador remains in Trier for consultations for an indefinite period of time.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Kögler is currently on the conference on the security of international waters in Oikawa. He will return to Trier as soon as he has handed over the leadership of the Eiffellandian delegation on that conference.

Polls: FDV and SDV down, CDV and VU up

Recent polls show a decline in the popularity of Vice-Chancellor Kögler’s FDV and a rise in the popularity of Eiffelland’s far-right movement the Volksunion. Despite a rise in the popularity of Chancellor Von Seydewitz’s CDV, the government would loose its majority if elections would be held today. The results of this poll are important because of the upcoming regional elections in the province Niedereiffel. They are as follows:

CDV: From 28% to 32%.
SDV: From 24% to 22%.
FDV: From 24% to 15%.
SLU: From 11% to 12%.
Grünen: Remains at 7%.
PCL: Remains at 2%.
KPE: Remains at 2%.
VU: From 2% to 8%.

Some former SDV-voters switched to the CDV, others to the SLU. There is also a movement of voters from the FDV to the CDV, but the largest amount of former FDV-voters switched to the Volksunion. The reason for this switch mentioned most often is the fact that the recent contracts for the oil pipelines were awarded to companies from Jurzan and Eiffelland, both leftwing countries, and the recent cooperation with Carentania in Solaren. Also FDV-members seem to be dissatisfied about those moves from the government.
The political leader of the Volksunion Günther Ziesche also referred to the recent oil pipeline contracts in his speech at this weekend’s party congress. He went even so far to state that “the government sold the country out to the socialists”. Chancellor Von Seydewitz, however, commented that “every company was allowed to bid on the oil pipelines, and it was even possible to negotiate the terms of the contracts”. “It was a fair process, but companies from other countries than Europaland and Jurzan refused to bid. No wonder that companies from Europaland and Jurzan were awarded the contracts,” the Chancellor added.
When asked about the poll results, the Chancellor said: “Well, apparently we have some people to convince about our decisions. We will do so while campaigning for the provincial parliament of Niedereiffel and will continue to do so afterwards.”

CDV wins elections in Niedereiffel

The results of the provincial elections in Niedereiffel are official now. The winner of these elections is the CDV. The SPE lost some seats again, but also the FDV. Earlier polls forecasted a massive seat gain for the Volksunion, but that did not happen. Former FDV‑voters who originally indicated to vote for the Volksunion did not do so, but stayed at home instead. Some voters switched from the FDV to the Volksunion though. The result is a relative vote gain for all parties, and strikingly for the first time in history the SLU has more seats than the FDV. These are the results:

CDV: From 23 to 29 seats.
SPE: From 26 to 19 seats.
FDV: From 22 to 14 seats.
SLU: From 14 to 17 seats.
Grünen: From 8 to 10 seats.
PCL: From 1 to 2 seats.
KPE: From 4 to 5 seats.
VU: From 2 to 4 seats.

Because of these results, the national coalition will loose one seat in the Staatsrat, because the CDV gains one seat and the FDV looses two seats.

The coalition negotiations started today under the presidency of Hannelore Vogel, the political leader of the Christiandemocrats in Niedereiffel. She started with inviting all the political leaders of the parties represented in the provincial parliament. Then she will determine with which parties she wants to continue the negotiations.

Prince Ludwig and Prince Sebastiano obtain Abitur

Two weeks ago, the final exams exams ended for the Princes Ludwig and Sebastiano. Today they heard that they passed them. Next week they will receive the Abitur, the diploma of Eiffelland’s highest level of secondary education (called Gymnasium).
Prince Ludwig developed himself to a many-sided young man with organisational skills. He was a very active pupil of the Königliches Gymnasium. He organised a lot of festivities and charity events, and showed to be a multitalent in music. He sang and played keyboards in the schoolband, and sometimes even played the guitar. It is well‑known that Prince Ludwig has a very good voice and is a virtuoso at the piano. Now he will fulfil his military service as a navy lieutenant. He doesn’t know yet what he will do after his military service; he is doubting between history, justice and language studies. He already speaks eight languages, of which five very well or fluently.
Prince Sebastiano is a grandson of the Talemantine Emperor. He came to Eiffelland at the beginning of 2010 to finalise his secondary education at the Königliches Gymnasium in Trier. He turned out to excel in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and economics. Also he was sometimes involved in organising events, although less than Prince Ludwig. It remains to be seen what he will do now, but he will probably return to Talemantros to either serve in the armed forces or study, despite invitations by King Albrecht to study in Eiffelland.
During his stay in Eiffelland, Prince Sebastiano got into a relationship with Prince Ludwig, and they are still together. In the case that Sebastiano returns to Talemantros, the two princes will continue to see each other from time to time.

Hannelore Vogel negotiates with SPE and SLU

After a week of speaking to the representants of the Grünen, SLU, SPE and FDV, Hannelore Vogel decided to continue the current coalition of CDV, SPE and SLU.

We thank Prime Minister Merlino for his kind words. The CDV knows how important international relations are for Eiffelland as a whole, also the relations with Potenza. Therefore, we will do everything we can to stimulate them.

Also Altaic Crown Prince obtains Abitur

Like it became known, also the Altaic Crown Prince Andrzej, who is in the same year as the Princes Ludwig and Sebastiano, obtained his Abitur this year. As a result of the Altaic revolution a number of years ago, the Altaic royal family went into exile in Trier, Eiffelland. Because of that, Prince Andrzej attended the Königliches Gymnasium in Trier. During his stay in Trier, he became friends with the Princes Ludwig and Sebastiano. When his mother returned to Altai to reclaim the throne, Andrzej remained in Trier to finish school. After his Abitur, Prince Andrzej will return to Altai. It is unclear what he will study afterwards.

Speed limit at motorways raised to 160 km/h awaiting complete abolishment

During today's press conference, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz indicated that the speed limit on Eiffelland's motorways will be raised to 160 km/h soon and completely abolished again later on. Traditionally, Eiffelland does not have speed limits for cars on the motorways. Exceptions to that rule were the 130 km/h limit during rush hours and local speed limits because of special circumstances. Last September, the government imposed a general speed limit of 130 km/h to handle petrol scarcity because of the war in Solaren. Now that this war is reaching its end, there is no direct for a mandatory speed limit on the motorways any more. The reason why the speed limit is not abolished immediately is to let the motorists get used to higher velocities again. For now, the speed limit is raised to 160, and in August completely abolished. The advisory speed limit for cars will become 130 km/h again. The speed limit for trucks, busses and cars with trailers will remain 100 km/h.

Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz: "I will never govern with the Volksunion"

In a discussion program broadcasted by the EEF (Erstes Eiffelländisches Fernsehen), Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz used quite harsh words about the Volksunion, Eiffelland's far right political party. The main topic of the discussion was the political situation in Eiffelland's neighbourcountry Danmark, where a nationalist party won the elections and formed a government in which the nationalists clearly take the lead. Von Seydewitz commented that "the current Danish government is the result of elections in Danmark". "The election results left room for other possible coalitions, but this is what came out of the process. Currently the nationalists determine what happens in Danmark. Interesting will be how the opinions on cooperating with in principle an extremist party will develop within the other three coalition parties. We can only hope that the new government of Danmark will reign in the interest of the Danish people. Danmark left the Germanian League, but closed a lot of bilateral deals with other countries and tries to play a stabilising role in the region. I still have my concerns, but things might develop positively as well," said Von Seydewitz.
The developments in Danmark also became actual because the polls on the elections in Niedereiffel initially showed an enormous increase in the popularity of the Volksunion. These polls didn't come true, but raised the question what would happen if the Volksunion suddenly became the largest party in the Staatstag. Von Seydewitz's reaction confirmed unofficial rumours about his antipathy for the Volksunion: "Only one approach is morally justifiable towards the Volksunion, and that is the approach of categorical and principal rejection of that party, its members and its ideology. As long as I am the political leader of the Christiandemocrats, as long as I am the Chancellor of this country, there is only one way for Günther Ziesche [political leader of the Volksunion, red.] to become a member of the government, and that is by obtaining an absolute majority in the Staatstag."
One of the other participants in the discussion asked whether the smaller members of the Danish coalition government should have taken the same principal stance. The Chancellor answered: "Danmark is Danmark and Eiffelland is Eiffelland. I can't advice the Danish politicians on this. They will have to decide for themselves."

The Government of His Danic Majesty expresses its continued trust and friendship with the Kingdom of Eiffelland. It is our belief and desire that the two kingdoms shall remain on cordial and cooperative terms whatever the outcome of the electoral machinations within our neighbour.

The post-League era in Danish politics, association and international perspectives, contrary to the premature expectations of many, open doors to a range of bilateral areas, rather than closes the door on them. In this new era in Germania, with old certainties gone and a growing shift in the status quo, we envisage and believe there is potential of mutual advantage in terms of political, economic and military windfall between the two kingdoms and is something that we shall be pressing for in coming months. In that sense, greater demonstration of independence and unilateralism by Trier on these areas would be a positive embarkation and would bear greater fruit in the longer term if even for its own benefit.

It is our belief that strong and healthy Dano-Eiffellandian relations and substantive progress in these areas herald, and should be exemplary of, not only confidence and friendship between two sovereign nation states but would put paid to the common and erroneous misapprehension that the recent election results are couched in intrinsic Germanophobe inclinations per se. This is contrary to our understanding of the Danish electorate and democratic result and is a selective misreading of the undercurrents and nuances of Danish political life and sentiment.

Regarding the Eiffellandian nationalist Volkspartei, the closest example to the Great Danish Hjemland, it has to be pointed out that there appear to be clear differences between the two, symptomatic of divergent traditions and political climates. Whereas the Eiffellandian Volkspartei appears to take a more leftist economic policy stance and is right on social policy, Hjemland is largely centre-left on domestic economic policy and social-liberal on social policy, supportive of areas such as gay rights, freedom of speech and so forth, as such typically Danish. Its most obvious hallmark is its stance towards the orientation of foreign, economic and military policy which demonstrates 'muscular independence' and a hard-line edge and approach.

We are happy with the explanations by Mr. Westerveld. However, please realise that the recent events were quite shocking to us. We still have problems with understanding the rationale behind them.

Eiffelland's diplomatic relations with Kyiv

How is the state of affairs in Eiffelland's diplomatic relations with Kyiv? Momentarily, Kyiv has an ambassador in Eiffelland, but Eiffelland does not have an ambassador in Kyiv. For months, the Eiffellandian embassy has been an embassy without ambassador. During the weekly press conference after the Cabinet Meeting, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz mentioned the current situation of Eiffelland's diplomatic relations with Kyiv: "At this moment, we don't see any room for sending our ambassador back to Kyiv. As you all know, the Wieser embassy in Kyiv was assaulted last April. As a result, we called our ambassador back. During the last 2 months, nothing has happened in Kyiv with regards to that assault. The Wieser government heard nothing about any efforts to find the culprits. That is problematic to us for two reasons. One: Wieserreich and Eiffelland are both members of the Germanian League, and therefore allies. Two: It is the duty of each country to protect all embassies it hosts against attacks and terrorist assaults. The Kievan authorities clearly failed with respect to that important duty. Of course it is not possible to protect an embassy against everything, but in that case the host country should do everything it can to find the culprits. An assault against an embassy should be a highly urgent matter to the government of the country where such an assault took place. The Kievan authorities did not show any sense of urgency in this matter. This does not give us any confidence in Kyiv's efforts to protect the embassies it hosts. This should be a serious matter of concern to all countries with an embassy in Kyiv, also to the nations friendly to Kyiv. The fact that we don't have an ambassador in Kyiv is not ideal, but we cannot send our ambassador back before we get a signal that the Kievans are taking the assault against the Wieser embassy seriously and assign top priority to finding the people behind that assault."

Terrorist attack during dance party Trier

What was meant as a celebration of the start of the summer holidays, ended in a disaster. 30,000 people from all over Eiffelland and abroad gathered together at the Messegelände in Trier for the biggest dance party of the country and one of the biggest dance parties in the region. Around three in the morning, there was an explosion at the southeastern corner of the building. A few minutes later, there were three other explosions shortly after each other. A panic that broke out was calmed down quickly. The evacuation of the people inside the building was started immediately. During the evacuation, people with machine guns opened fire at two of the exits. Another panic broke out among the people trying to leave the building through those exists; they fled back into the building. Then there was a fifth explosion. At that moment, the panic was complete. The mass of people could not be controlled any more and squeezed itself out of the building. Luckily, the machine gunners were gone at that moment.
About 200 people died, about 500 people were severely injured, and another 3000 people needed to be treated in hospitals for lighter injuries like bone fractures. All the wounded people were transported to hospitals in surrounding Trier, and some of the most severely injured people were sent to university hospitals throughout the country.
During the press conference the next day, the mayor of Trier indicated that one of the terrorists has been arrested. He is being interrogated. An investigation of the events will start soon, not only to find out what happened, but also to find out if the security personnel acted adequately and what can be learned from the events. One thing is already clear: The explosions were caused by small missiles.

The Government of His Danic Majesty expresses its profound shock and sadness at the news that has emerged of this grotesque and uncivilised atrocity committed against innocent civilians. Our thoughts are with all those whose untimely demise has cast a foreboding shadow across all of Eiffelland, their families and friends and all those otherwise maimed or traumatised by this event.

News has also emerged that three Great Danish citizens were also victims in the attack, an official announcement to be published in the next few days.

In this dark time, the Scanian kingdom stands shoulder to shoulder with its closest Germanian neighbour and pledges to do all it can to assist and liaise in the investigation and apprehension of the perpetrators of this gross and macabre act that has crossed borders in its fallout.

Terrorism is a cancerous blight that has cost countless lives and decimated the body politic across the world and its appearance in Germania is a most grievous development.

Speech from the Chancellor on television

Last Saturday, about 30,000 young people, not only Eiffellandians but also foreigners, came to the Messegelände in Trier for the yearly Summer Dance Event. At 2:29 in the night from Saturday to Sunday, an antitank missile was fired at the southeastern corner of the building where the dance event was held. Two minutes later, three more missiles were fired at the building. Immediately after that, all people were evacuated from the building. The evacuation went on in an orderly manner, until two exits of the building were fired upon with machine guns. All people fled back inside. At that moment, a fifth missile was fired, causing another explosion. From then on, the masses of people could not be controlled any more.
202 people, among which 3 Danish youngsters, died during the disaster, many because they were crushed during the panic, but also many because of the machine gun fire. 3497 people had to be admitted to hospital, among which 503 were severely injured. 2,000 people are still in hospital, among which 486 are still in a critical condition. 18 people died in the hospitals.
Eiffelland has been struck hard. Extremely hard. 440 parents lost their child, even more people lost their grandchild, brother or sister. Innumerous people lost a friend. 3 Danish people died during the disaster as well. We offer our condolences to all the families and friends of the deceased, and wish strength to all the people who are still in hospital and all the people who witnessed this disaster. We pray to God that He helps them all, and gives mercy to the people who died.
On Sunday morning, all the flags on government buildings flew at half-mast. Later on, the King announced a period of national mourning, ending on Monday 16 July. Flags on all government buildings will fly half-mast until the period of national mourning ends.
Several questions remain. Could this have been prevented? The building itself was secure. It had been searched beforehand, and the security measures were such, that nothing could have been smuggled inside. But we never thought of the possibility that somebody would fire missiles on it from a distance. Should we reproach ourselves for that? Is it possible to take everything into account? More importantly, did we react adequately during the disaster? What went wrong, and what could we have done better? Was the building itself safe enough? It is needed to answer these questions. It is needed to learn from this disaster.
It is true that one of the terrorists has been arrested. We are working very hard to find his accomplices. I can assure you, we will find and punish all the culprits.
Meanwhile, we received words of condolences from the governments of various countries. I thank all of them for their compassion. I also give my condolences to the Government of Danmark for the loss of 3 of their citizens.

DULWICH, FRIDAY, 13th JULY 2012

The Right Honourable The Secretary of State has received the Command of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty The Queen-Empress
to make known the following gracious Statement of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty
to the King, Lordships and Commoners of the Kingdom of Eiffelland.

An Extension of The Queen-Empress' Statement in Council.

TO THE KING, LORDSHIPS AND COMMONERS OF THE KINGDOM OF EIFFELLAND
I am instructed to EXPRESS on behalf of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty;

Her Engellexic Majesty has been quite overcome with outrage, indeed, the entire Empire of Great Engellex, at the treatment of those innocence in Trier, without scant courtesy, it was a terrible crime made more so by the ungallant conduct of not declaring ones injustice and cause before such a gross loss of life.

I know Great Engellex can be sure of so very little support in the Kingdom of Eiffelland, but I dare say that, notwithstanding the difficult circumstance placed upon it, the Cabinet in Trier would be good enough to listen to these words that I believe it my duty to make. I absolutely believe that the dark and terrible times we are forced to exist within should be acknowledged as opportunity for the Cabinets at Dulwich and Trier to seize and set upon a route of reconciliation with the hope of better association between us.

Indeed, to farther this sincere scheme, her Majesty the Queen-Empress has commanded Aldwych d’Evercy House to provide unconditional assistance to the endeavour of your justice and security against those responsible for the outrageous crime committed.

As First Lord of Aldwych d’Evercy, I guarantee it.

By the Grace of GOD, of the EMPIRE of GREAT ENGELLEX, CHARLOTTE, the QUEEN-EMPRESS, through the SECRETARY of STATE, his Grace the DUKE of NONSUCH

Mass read for all victims of terrorist attack in Trier

Today all the masses read throughout Eiffelland were dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attack in Trier. Normally most Eiffellandians go to Church once a month, but this time all churches were full as if it were a mass for Christmas or Easter. Because the Archbishops are still at the Conclave, the masses in their cathedrals were read by their surrogates. All priests preached against terrorism. The collections were dedicated to victims of terrorist attacks in general.

Responsibility for terrorist attack claimed by extremist Solaris

The eight 'o clock news of RTE had the opportunity to bring up the scoop about the responsibility for last weekend's terrorist attack in Trier. In a five minute video message that was completely broadcasted, the responsibility was claimed by a group calling itself "The vengeful hand of Solaren". They introduced themselves as followers of the Solaris Catholic Church and followers of Urban, whom they still see as the rightful Pope. The man who appeared to be the leader of the group motivated the terrorist attack by claiming that "hundreds of thousands of Solaris had died under the hands of Eiffellandian soldiers". "We are here, in your own country, to let you feel what we Solaris daily feel thanks to your soldiers." The man also listed his demands: Retreat of all Eiffellandian forces and the immediate release of the terrorist that had been arrested.
Later this evening, Chancellor Von Seydewitz indicated that he did not intend to comply with the terrorists' demands at all: "First of all, we didn't start the war. Pope Urban did. Secondly, this terrorist attack clearly shows why Solaren must be pacified. And that is what we will do in cooperation with the EDF."

Eiffelland boycots Boliatur and sends Navy to Implarian Ocean

The Government of Cantignia took the initiative. Eiffelland follows. Effective immediately, Eiffelland imposes a total boycott on Boliatur. Eiffellandians in Boliatur, including the complete diplomatic staff, are leaving the country. Boliaturian diplomats have been instructed to leave the country within 48 hours. Boliaturian assets in Eiffelland will be seized, effective immediately. Furthermore, a carrier fleet will be sent to the Implarian Ocean to participate in forming a sea blockade of Boliatur.

Another terrorist attack prevented
Staatsschutz captures 18 Solaris terrorists

During a press conference this afternoon presided by Minister for Internal Affairs Philipp Neubauer, Staatshauptdirektor des Staatsschutzes Karl-Heinz Farnbach announced that a group of 18 Solaris people have been arrested on suspicion of having conducted the terrorist attack at the Trierer Messegelände in the weekend of 7 and 8 July and planning several other terrorist attacks. Six people were captured while they were about to conduct a terrorist attack against a valley bridge, the other people were arrested in Biedenkopf, a city with about 25,000 inhabitants in the province of Sauerland, about 50 kilometers from Marburg. Plans for several other terrorist attacks were found in Biedenkopf as well.
Unfortunately, the leader of the group, Totò Andolina, managed to escape. Minister Neubauer indicated the following: “The Eiffellandian police and the Staatsschutz request assistance, both national and international, in tracking down Totò Andolina, a man aged about 25 years, about 1.70 meters tall, light musculous, black hair, black eyes, tanned skin. Pictures of this man will be published. We warn the general public that Andolina is armed. Therefore, we strongly advice not to approach him personnally but to warn the local police. We put up a 200,000 Eiffelland Mark reward for the person who gives the tip that leads to the arrestment of Totò Andolina by the Eiffellandian police or the Staatschutz, or to his extradition to Eiffelland.”

Freie Fahrt für freie Bürger
Speed limits on motorways abolished

The speed limits on most motorways in Eiffelland have been abolished. The situation before 1 September 2011 has been restored. This means that there is an advisory speed limit of 130 km/h on most Eiffellandian motorways, with obligatory limits on places where needed due to environmental demands, construction work on the roads, busy traffic or dangerous situations.
The speed limits on the motorways were introduced as a temporary measure because of the war in Solaren. Now that that war is reaching its end (there is even an armistice), the speed limits are not needed any more. About a month ago, the speed limits were already raised to let the motorists get used to higher velocities again, but now they have been abolished.
The speed limits on other roads remain the same, so 30 to 60 km/h (mostly 50 km/h) inside cities and villages, 80 to 100 km/h outside cities and villages, and 130 km/h on expressways.

Exchange of Princes in the Navy

Today Prince Ludwig started his military service in the Navy, while his older brother Prince Karl left the Navy. Prince Karl’s military service already ended last year, but he decided to serve another year because of the war in Solaren. Now he leaves the Navy as an Oberleutnant. Prince Ludwig will start with a 6 months education to become a Navy Lieutenant.
