Welcome to the 1953 EMAC, hosted here in historic Turin, Potenza! All hotels, living arrangements, and security will be supplied by the Ministry of Law Enforcement and the Duchy of Turin. The event will be held in one day, with all nations showcasing their musical talent, and then will be judged by an international panel. Duke Silvestro di Grimaldi, along with the entire House of Grimaldi, shall be in attendance, and has offered a special grant to the winner.

While in Turin, we invite all visitors to visit the Royal Museum of the Arts, the historical San Luca Cathedral, as well as the various clubs and music halls throughout the treasure of the Grand Duchy.

Rules:

1) Pertaining to our 1950’s setting, music from or before the 1950’s is preferred. If you select a song which is from our modern times, or later times, but sounds 50’s or older (for example, big band songs, jazz, or folk songs), that will be permitted, provided they use instruments/technology that would only be seen up and until the 1950’s.

2) One song per nation. Submit in the posts below. Please provide a musical sample of your submission along with the following information:

Home Nation
Song Title
Performer/Band

3) Voting will be supplied to all nations and based on points: 12 for the favorite country, 10 for second favorite, 8 for third, and then as normal on down (7-1) for the next ranks. Countries are not allowed to vote for themselves. Voting will be announced by the host nation, after which participating countries may submit their votes.

Song Title
My Old Man's a Refuse Collector/Dustman

Performer/Band
Larry Douglas

A folk classic in Havenshire, the song is celebrated as an excellent example of the humour, spirit, and aspirational pride of the proletarian. It also contains mildly subversive lyrics, referencing taboos of defiance of police, mayfly marriages, the reality of poverty in the People's Republic and other taboos that can't normally be talked about openly.

Performer/Band: Gealbu Heargsdi and the Northern Lights

Gealbu Heargsdi is a renowned jazz saxophonist and one of the most popular artists in modern Saamiland - a country well known for its love of slow smooth jazz. With his band, the Northern Lights, Heargsdi performs an all instrumental version of the classic Saami lovesong, and popular hit from the late 1940s, "I Fall in Love So Easily."

Song Title: Chait Chariya (The Sun is Rising)

Performer/Band: Humayra Channa

A romantic song about a girl in the countryside who is about to get married to her love, who is returning back home after a very long time away.

OOC: The recording is new but there is no instrument in here that wasn't here in 1890 or even earlier... so I guess I'm safe as far as the soundscape is concerned. And we are voting for the song, not the recording... right?

Malminen's composition tells of the protagonist's visit to the Western Fennian town of Karjala and meeting with a beautiful woman. Though the realities of life force the protagonist to depart, the song references feelings of distant and lost love that continue.

Returning to her homeland of the IHC after over a decade of living in the Attreyu Republic/Former Frescanian Colony, this Himyari-skinned woman has swept the music charts of Ivernia with her soft beautiful tones.

OOC: I've actually seen these guys in concert, and most of their instruments are antique - I even spoke to the fellow who plays the trumpet, and he told me he uses one from the 1930's.

Song Title:
Performer: Stone & the Kids

Drawing upon elements from tribal black Himyari music and blending them with some contemporary Gallo-Germanian instruments, Stone & the Kids have crafted a song which has deeply captured the Attreyan public's imagination. It is a plaintive song directed to the slaves of the Pellewburg Confederacy, bidding them to "run" to freedom in the Republic. The native-French speaker, Alphonse Stone-Mgube, sings in English as that language is much better known there.

(OOC: the song seems timeless to me. Aside from the honking loud gongs, all instruments used (especially the drums!) are available in the 50s.)

OOC: I actually wanted to dearly love to use a Swedish song, but I'll keep that for another day, as I couldn't find an appropriate version. The current 'Eurovision' entry is my lame attempt. Sorry.

Nation: Workers' Republic of Carentania
Song Title: Virgin Mary
Performer: Dan Rove and "The Lancers"

Dan Rove and his band "The Lancers" represent a young, avantgardistic generation of Carentanian musicians who fuse Carentanian Jazz and Himyari Folk music in an, as of yet, unnamed new style, which has been described as 'that Maximo sound' (after the entertainment district in Rijeka). Their music is popular with Carentanian teenagers - much to the horror of their parents, as both musicians and the culture surrounding their concerts are associated with restlessness, lack of good manners, defiance of social norms and even criminality. In the past, several concerts of Dan Rove and "The Lancers" have ended in small riots.

His selection for the EMAC is highly controversial in Carentania.

It's been rumoured that the song which "The Lancers" will perform, written by Dan Rove, tells as much of a broken heart as it contains symbols about Rove's own time with the Carentanian military.

Lyrics:
The priests at home, they used to tell me this
Son, have faith, and virgin Mary, she'll never leave your side
No matter where you go, remember, gods grace's upon you
If only you'll listen and be good

(Refrain: ) But brother, virgin Mary taught me this
That the faithful is a fool
And the sinner reaps rewards
And virgin Mary - she is anything, but a virgin anymore

Well, for the longest time, I placed my bets upon hope
I believed, I trusted god won't leave me alone
And I listened and was good, 'til this pain struck in my side
And my chest and in my heart.
And then all my hope was lost.

(Refrain)

Can you believe? Well I can't. (repeat 2x)
Not in a world, where the liar's better off
And the lied to suffer loss of all they owned
Of all their hopes and spirits, of their future and their past

(Refrain)

Eiffelland has a large tradition in jazz music. Each broadcasting station has its own big band, that performs both on the radio and live. This year Eiffelland sends the big band of the Sauerlandfunk, directed by jazz composer Erwin Lehn, with an ode to music: Ich hör' so gern Musik – I love to listen to music.
