The Confederate Times is Helena's most successful newspaper. While most news is delivered via television screens, some people in Helena prefer to receive their news the old fashioned way. The Confederate Times has been printed since April 22, 1790 on the date of the founding of the country as a Republic rather than the monarchy it had once been. It is printed in English, but is available in Celtic, German, and Swedish.

Carson Wells Wins Re-Election!

President Carson Wells has defeated his competition, Governor of Hattie Llewelyn Moss, and has secured another 5 years as the President of the Confederated States of Helena. Wells has stated that;

"I will continue to keep Federal business in the hands of the Federal government. The States will remain, as they always have, in charge of their own affairs."

In fact the only thing that Wells plans on changing about his way of doing things this term is that he plans on bringing Helena out of it's somewhat Isolationist trendings that it has been in since the 60's. Stating that;

"The world is changing and Helena must change with it. Nations have been showing more of a desire to go to war, and Helena must start making friends in order to avoid dragging itself into one. I plan on having Helena preform new acts to befriend EDF and LFS nations. However I am reluctant to have Helena join one, in order to keep ourselves from becoming dragged into a large scale war such as the Freiheiter one."

Belmont Building Up Military

Belmont has been making itself a problem for sometime now. However recently Belmont has announced that it will be building up its nuclear stockpile by 25.5%. This extremely alarming to the nations of the Germanian continent, especially the EDF, which Belmont has argued with for sometime now.

Secretary of Defense Ronald Basset has been busy criticizing the Belmontian government. Here is an excerpt from his press conference late last night;

"What do the Belmontians think the are going to accomplish? What good could Nuclear Weapons possibly bring to the continent, hell what good could they bring to the world. Not only has it been building up its nuclear arsenal, but it has also been buying attack helicopters, UAVs, and has boosted its airforce's budget. I believe that the only way to confront the Belmontian problem is to fully join the EDF. Seeing as how the EDF does not sell weapons to idiotic countries."

President Wells has agreed that the LFS should have not sold weapons to a war mongering nation such as Belmont. However he has yet to say anything about a possible EDF membership.

The Kingdom of Belmont has a right, as a sovereign state, to protect itself. We would like to tell the government of Helena that if it has any problems with Paris, it should begin dialogue instead of ranting Belmont's policies.

The above article is the view of The Defense Department and the Helenan Times, not by any means the entire Federal and States governments of Helena.

Helena has no reason to be alarmed or to feel threatened. Our armed forces are for entirely defensive purposes, and our nuclear and defense policy states that the Kingdom must never start an offensive, only respond to it and that too just for the defense of the motherland. The country is bound to that policy by Military Conventions Act 1956. Further more, in an effort to allay any additional concerns or fears the noble country of Helena might have, we call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Helena to come meet with his counterpart in Paris.

While I can assure you that the article was merely the views of the Defense Department and not the Federal government, I will not avoid a chance to discuss cooperation with another state. I would love to meet with the Belmontian Foriegn Affairs Minister and discuss further cooperation between our governments.

225th Anniversary of Battle of Ft. Smith

The past five days the nation has been on holiday, in a mixture of celebration and mourning. Because today Sunday, November 28, 2010 is the 225th anniversary of the bloodiest battle/day in Helenana and Durhamen history. During the Helenan Revolution, the peasents, commoners, middle class, and even some nobles fought the Nobility of the Sword. The Sword was an alliance of Durham's (now Helena's) richest and most powerful nobles. They were responsible for the assassination of Queen Helen and underestimated the pent of anger and desire for change within the common folks of Durham (Helena). When the peasents began the revolution they quickly seized control of the northern states, and of Hattie. The Sword had seized control of the southern states of Missoula and Carolina (now known as Durham).

The Revolutionary Army was armed with medieval age weapons, and used extremely outdated tactics, however their sheer numbers and determination were making them quite the force to be reckoned with. The Sword was armed with (then) modern fire-arms and were held up in Ft. Smith. In a 18 hour seige, the Revolutionary Army lost over 1 million men, while the Sword lost about half that number. The Revolutionary Army was still victorious, and it remains the day that the tide of the war shifted in favor of the revolutionaries. Making it one of Helena's most important holidays.

Happy Ft. Smith Day Helenans!

Laurel's State Governor, Gregory Hurley, has announced that the State Legislature will be voting on a bill that could legalize marijuana if passed. However, the Federal Government's and several other State Government's are very critical of this bill even being put up for vote. As President Wells put it;

"The Confederation is very dependent on Laurel's massive agriculture industry. If any of the land currently used for growing food was used for Pot, our whole economy could be ruined. For centuries Laurel has been providing enough food to feed almost the whole nation. If they suddenly stopped doing this, than we would have to start becoming independent on foreign trade like the Old Kingdom once was. And we pride ourselves on our in-dependency, is Laurel really thinking of tainting that pride for their own selfish reasons?"

However Governor Hurley stated that marijuana is already being grown on huge tracts of land illegally. And that it hasn't been hurting Laurel's food exports. But economic experts argue that legalizing this drug would encourage farmers to stop growing Corn, Wheat, and other food crops, and grow Marijuana instead.

We will keep the fine citizens of the Confederation of Helena updated as this story develops.

Should the Laurel State move forward with the initiative to legalize the growth and use of marijuana, Ratham-Keaton would be interested in setting up facilities for industrial-scale cultivation and distribution within Laurel to expand on a similar venture already in progress within Cornavia. Ratham-Keaton sincerely hopes that the proposition will gain passage.

Hattie's New Plan

The 'home' of Helena's Celtic population, Hattie, has been hurting economically throughout its history. Governor Enya Mac Carthaigh has recently re-done the budget of the State, focusing heavily on encouraging manufacturing and the Hattie Justice Department.

"The fishing industry in Hattie is suffering due to pollution and over-fishing, and the farming industry has been destroyed due to competition with the mainland. Hattie's only real economic capability other than those is manufacturing. Also, in order to take down criminal gangs plaguing our poorer neighborhoods, I have increased funding to our police forces and to our prisons."

In addition to declaring war on the gangs in Hattie, the State Government has begun to have guest speakers in the schools to teach children why joining gangs is wrong.

Helena safe, as South Gallia War Rages!

Belmont has recently declared war on the Communist nation of Coronado, and more nations are getting dragged in by the day. Due to a Communist alliance Carentania was forced to declare war on Belmont, and now Frescania threatens to put down the troops being sent to Coronado which could drag Frescania into the war as well! It has long been known that Coronado has been a hot-bed of terrorism, and many Helenan's are supportive of the once hated Belmontian military.

The Intelligence Department has reported that the Collective has seen a 25% drop in funding, which is believed to be a direct result of the war on Coronado. However the Collective has continued to set up small road bombs and occasional car bombs within South Kauai territory. It is expected that after Christmas troops can expect to be re-deployed to the territorial divide on Big Kauai island.

Despite the general approval of the South Gallian War by Helenans, not a single member of President Wells' cabinet has commented on the war. However, a Victorian State Senator commented that, "Unless the [South Gallian War] affects the flow of oil tankers to and from Kauai, than it is likely that Helena will remain extremely un-involved with this war and detached in every way other than to wish for a swift end."

Bill to Legalize Marijuana Rejected

The Laurel State Senate did not pass the bill to legalize marijuana as it was predicted it would. There will be a re-vote, but with 4/5ths of the Senate voting no, it is unlikely that it will matter. However Governor Hurley has stated that he will attempt to make the bill into a referendum and super-cede that Senate. He claims that under the State Constitution he has the right to do so, but the Laurel State Supreme Court will check out whether these claims are justified.

President's Re-Budget Approved!

President Wells' Re-Budget has been approved by Congress, and will be in effect by the New Year! With the scheduled re-bugetting the following will be facing decreases in funding; Welfare, Public Transportation, and Energy Research. There will be less funding to Public Transport on the basis that since there is no more construction projects and they have more than enough to pay for fuel. And the Energy Research department has not been justifing its funding with the amount of 'progress' it has been preforming. The following will be recieving an increase in funding; the Intelligence, Defence, and the Justice Department.

Derry to be Aided by Federal Government

Derry will be recieving a sort of economic boost soon. Not in the form of cash money, but in the form of making Derry's port the main Great Sea import location for the nation. Previously Semmes Port located in Laurel was the main spot. However contrary to popular belief, this was not because the government made it this way, it simply happened naturally. However, now the government is stepping in to help one of the most struggling states of the Confederacy.

Hattian Governor Enya Mac Carthaigh was greatly appreciative of the National COngress's decicisoin. Stating that this will bring thousands of new jobs to Hattie.

Northern Kauai May Be Forming a Nation

In defiance to the Valentine's Day Treaty of 1968, it is possible that the territory that was to remain un-organized after the failed Kauain Revolution, is creating a new nation. Some small towns and tribes of the territory have banded together under a military and political alliance, and a few of them are claiming to be part of The People's Republic of Kauai, according to Southern Kauain tradesmen who operate in the north. Secretary of Defence, Gen. Jeremiah Young, stated that '... it is extremely possible that this is the workings of the notorious terrorist organization known as The Collective, that has been conducting small attacks on Souther Kauai, is responsible for this illegal action.' However no memeber of teh government is speaking about what is going to be done about it. A recent poll done on our website ( ) said that 79% of Helenans "Don't Care Whether North Kauai becomes it's own Nation"

Governor Enya Mac Carthaigh Hospitalized!

After a horrific car accident in north Derry at 5:30 this morning, Hattian Governor Enya Mac Carthaigh has been put in the hospital in critical condition. She was reportedly hit by a drunk driver who was driving down the wrong lane, and traveling 30 miles above the posted speed limit. The Governor tried to swerve out of the way, but the drunk driver ended up smashing into her head on. The drunk driver was pronounced dead at Derry County Jail, and the name of the driver will not be released. Even though Mac Carthaigh's condition is critical, the whole nation is hoping that she will heal and overcome the many injuries. However, the extent of the injuries has not yet been released to the public. President Carson Wells is expected to put a stricter DUI law forward to Congress sometime next week no matter the outcome.

President Pulls Troops From Kauai Division Line

In an effort to ease tension between North and South Kauai, President Carson Wells ordered that Confederate troops back off. While this has caused him to lose a lot of face with his own party (The Helenan Conservative Party) his approval ratings have risen among the Social-Democrat Party, and he has also recieved a general boost in approval. Up from 65% to 68%. The President stated that;

"We do not want to risk our boys over a possible conflict that would be completely unjustified and unwarranted. We must take away the reason for terrorist cells like the Collective to call for violence against the CSH controlled southern half of Kauai. The citizens of this fine nation have made it very clear to me that they do not care whether or not the unorganized territories north of the boundary organize themselves. So I will not risk the stability of the Green Sea area, as well as the stability of our own nation, over a treaty signed decades ago."

However, some critics of the move, such as Missoula Congressman, Conner Cheney have stated that the move will actually weaken the Confederacy. Here is an excerpt from Cheney's reply to our interviewer;

"We are doing the opposite of what we need to be doing in Kauai. I respect what the President has done up until this point. If we show that we are weak, then the terrorist organizations that are brainwashing the north (of Kauai) will show their hand and wipe out our skeleton force of men. By increasing our presence in Kauai, we will actually save more lives."

Either way, with almost all of Northern Kauai uniting under one banner, it is coming clear that Helena will have to decide between honoring the old Valentine's Day Treaty, or allowing the Kauains to create their own nation.

World Hockey Tournament Already a Big Seller!

Anticipation is mounting in the Confederacy, as February 25 approaches. Why is this date so important? Because it will be the day when the best players of several nations, will play one another to see what nation can boast the greatest hockey skill per capita! Teams from nations such as Suionia, The Confederal Republics, and even Akwesasne are just some of the big names competing in this tournament.

The WHT will be held in Hackett Stadium, located in Helena City. The stadium is placed very close to the Queen's Monument, which is an impressive statue of the martyr Queen Helen. Already the tickets are nearly sold out.

Even President Wells has stated that he will be attending, and says 'there simply ain't a way we can lose. We have the talent, the tradition, and the pride. If I were a bettin' man my money'd be on our Helena.
