"One for the History Books"; Hawthorn Takes the Presidency

- President Philip Hawthorn

BERGAN -- This election campaign began only a few months ago. Five individuals who are the leaders of their respective parties have all been scrambling to get the popular vote the minute the election was called. For six years, Arcacia has been under the leadership of President Lawrence Brown of the Conservative Alliance Party who have held a majority government upon winning in the last election which was called early. Now-Former President Lawrence Brown, after having experienced the most staggering loss of his career and that of the Conservative Alliance admits that he has only himself to blame for having "...clearly failed the nation..." Brown now has to make way for the new President of the Arcacian Federation; Philip Hawthorn of the Progressive Green Party.

Today the announcement was made after the people's votes were tallied that Hawthorn is now the new Head-of-State. What makes this election so astonishing and one for the history books is because for the first time ever in this nation's history, someone other than a leader of the Conservative Alliance or the Social-Liberal Faction has become President. Even more impressive is the new status of the Progressive Green Party forming a minority government in the House of Representatives. Previously deemed to be "forever in third", the Progressive Green Party under the leadership of Hawthorn have accumulated the most seats in their party's history. This is seen as being truly momentous and a living example of the 'underdog' taking the cake, and eating it too.
A national poll was conducted in the early days of campaigning to get a vague idea on how many Arcacians planned on participating, or voting, in these elections. 71.5% of the populatin said they would turn out. The remainder of the citizens were either apathetic to politics and too unsure of the candidates presented to them to cast a clear vote. Then came Hawthorn with a big smile, his ways of reaching out to the average man, a five-step plan to bring the country back on its feet and all topped off with a catchy slogan: "Don't Go Right. Don't Go Left. Go Green!" With all of this in effect and with the boost of support from the voting youth, 84.3% of the nation turned out to vote and casted the Conservative Alliance to a third-party status. "It was time for a change. It seems as if this cat-and-mouse game between the Social-Liberals and the Conservatives was nothing more of an ego competition." says kathleen Meye, a nurse in the capital city of Bergan, "And each election I would grow more and more fearful of my employment security and how I was going to feed my children. Finally, now that the right man won, maybe we the people will finally be heard. I trust him completely."

What the Lower House now looks like

Though this may be a time for celebration, the Greens acknowledge the fact that they've won a minority government - meaning they will have four other factions in the House of Representatives to sway if they expect to pass anything. The Greens have won 91 seats out of 210 with the Social-Liberal Faction forming the Official Opposition sitting at 43 seats. This is not much of a change for the Libs since they have been the Conservative's Opposition for the last six years. The Conservatives were heavily knocked down from their previous majority to a weeping 40 seats. This caused the former President Brown to step down as party leader. The Democratic Bloc has 24 seats, the Federal Christian Party, 11 and the remaining two seats are now occupied by noteable independent candidates in their respective county.
With promises of taxing big polluters, creating eco-friendly jobs, supporting labor unions and forming a small and centralized governmen - Hawthorn and the Greens are going to be under a large magnifying glass for, at least, the next 100 days.

"...Despair is no longer an option for our great nation. For too long we have been ignored by a government deaf to the people's outcry for a fair and just society. There are communities in Arcacia where many of the population are hungry, are angry and there are some who have even given up hope on their government. I know you've all heard it time and time again, but this time I want you all to understand that wether you're a single mother of two from the south, a simple farmer from the west, a judge or lawyer in the north or an Indigenous-Arcacian from the east - I want you all to understand that today, you have all become my priority. Let us admire what is history but let us all look forward to our future. Together." ~ President Philip J. Hawthorn
