Lord Chancellor Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz
The evening of November 10th 2009 it was announced that the next administration in the Free Cities Union will be one lead by Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz. Her election to the Lord Chancellor brings historic value for the ‘09 elections as it is the first time a female Lord Chancellor has been elected within the Union. Her victory was a landslide against Willem Duverger and signalled the nations desire for real and drastic change within the FCU. The tide of victory for the centre-right was strengthened as the Free Union Party gained a grand majority within the Chamber of Representatives, with the United National Party’s fall from grace so hard that they were five seats from being put into third place within the chamber.
The running to the declaration of the victor for the Lord Chancellor of this afternoon has had the Free Cities Union in a period of great suspense. It was realised just how significant this election would be when the Commission for National Statistics had revealed that a poll it conducts by mail to the electorate two months before the election predicted a 46.2% rise in voter turn-out. The highest it has been since the ‘70’s.
The turn-out of the electorate stood at 84.9%. Televised reports from across the Union showed people queuing in the very early hours to have their votes cast, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission had announced that polling stations will be open until everyone in the queues, before 22:00, have had the opportunity to cast their vote. The volume of votes to be counted traditionally, as the reform to the system has been delayed further, caused significant delays to the over-night results that people look forward to with the National Election. Instead the results began to creep in this morning with the city of Saint Antonio maintaining it’s tradition of being the first city to declare it’s results. The last result came from the city of Hanzler.
The Chamber of Representatives had it’s results finalised before those of the running for Lord Chancellor. Cities such as Saint Antonio, Deritzburg, Hanzler and Charlesbourg reported crowds in the tens of thousands gathered around public screens in city squares to witness the outcome first hand. Administrations in some cities, such as Saint Antonio, were so sure of who they believed to be the victor that lighting and firework displays had been arranged a mere week before polling. Celebrations were promptly arranged throughout much of the Union with only two cities, UNP heartlands, documenting a quiet transition of power with the elections.
Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz will give her formal address to the Union as Lord Chancellor when the Chamber of Representatives is addressed by her on Friday.
The politics of 2004 - 2009 have been marked with incidents and controversy, the UNP more so than any other party by far. Leadership changes had occurred three times within the UNP, and twice with it’s bloc ally the ULP. A series of scandals had rocked the UNP-ULP administrations, with both former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs George Grozny and Speaker of the Chamber Louis Gale being formally dismissed from office by the Council of State to face charges of corruption.
Willem Duverger had ascended to the office of Lord Chancellor by a vote of leadership confidence by the ruling bloc in the Chamber of Representatives, the UNP-ULP. This was despite repeated petitions from the general public put to the Council of State against the decision following the controversy of Duverger’s tenure as Secretary of State for Finance. He held office until the constitution forced a National Election. The election was conducted in circumstances far from favourable with the UNP. Two members of government dismissed, with three others refusing to acknowledge the recommendation from the Council of State to resign. Continuous leakings from within the State Ministries that brought public revelation to the level of corruption developed and encouraged by the UNP caused public outrage and enraged headlines.
The campaign by Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz and the FUP against the political bloc headed by Willem Duverger was fierce and it was brutal. The UNP were ineffectual with their founded arrogance over other parties, they have been in power since 1989 and established the culture of either joining their political bloc or having no chance in governing at all. However, many political commentators believe the numerous remarks over the fact that Katherina was a woman assisted in bringing down the political behemoth, their way of thinking was and is regarded as being quite removed from the reality in which the rest of the Union exists within.

This campaign is a declaration of war on everything the UNP stand for!
