KOLLWITZ ELECTION VICTORY

HISTORIC VICTORY FIRST FEMALE LORD CHANCELLOR ELECTED

Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz has been elected with a landslide victory against Willem Duverger. The Free Union Party also routs United National Party with a historic win and seizing the Chamber of Representatives.

Lord Chancellor Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz

The evening of November 10th 2009 it was announced that the next administration in the Free Cities Union will be one lead by Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz. Her election to the Lord Chancellor brings historic value for the ‘09 elections as it is the first time a female Lord Chancellor has been elected within the Union. Her victory was a landslide against Willem Duverger and signalled the nations desire for real and drastic change within the FCU. The tide of victory for the centre-right was strengthened as the Free Union Party gained a grand majority within the Chamber of Representatives, with the United National Party’s fall from grace so hard that they were five seats from being put into third place within the chamber.

The running to the declaration of the victor for the Lord Chancellor of this afternoon has had the Free Cities Union in a period of great suspense. It was realised just how significant this election would be when the Commission for National Statistics had revealed that a poll it conducts by mail to the electorate two months before the election predicted a 46.2% rise in voter turn-out. The highest it has been since the ‘70’s.

The turn-out of the electorate stood at 84.9%. Televised reports from across the Union showed people queuing in the very early hours to have their votes cast, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission had announced that polling stations will be open until everyone in the queues, before 22:00, have had the opportunity to cast their vote. The volume of votes to be counted traditionally, as the reform to the system has been delayed further, caused significant delays to the over-night results that people look forward to with the National Election. Instead the results began to creep in this morning with the city of Saint Antonio maintaining it’s tradition of being the first city to declare it’s results. The last result came from the city of Hanzler.

The Chamber of Representatives had it’s results finalised before those of the running for Lord Chancellor. Cities such as Saint Antonio, Deritzburg, Hanzler and Charlesbourg reported crowds in the tens of thousands gathered around public screens in city squares to witness the outcome first hand. Administrations in some cities, such as Saint Antonio, were so sure of who they believed to be the victor that lighting and firework displays had been arranged a mere week before polling. Celebrations were promptly arranged throughout much of the Union with only two cities, UNP heartlands, documenting a quiet transition of power with the elections.

Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz will give her formal address to the Union as Lord Chancellor when the Chamber of Representatives is addressed by her on Friday.

This campaign is a declaration of war on everything the UNP stand for!
Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz

The politics of 2004 - 2009 have been marked with incidents and controversy, the UNP more so than any other party by far. Leadership changes had occurred three times within the UNP, and twice with it’s bloc ally the ULP. A series of scandals had rocked the UNP-ULP administrations, with both former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs George Grozny and Speaker of the Chamber Louis Gale being formally dismissed from office by the Council of State to face charges of corruption.

Willem Duverger had ascended to the office of Lord Chancellor by a vote of leadership confidence by the ruling bloc in the Chamber of Representatives, the UNP-ULP. This was despite repeated petitions from the general public put to the Council of State against the decision following the controversy of Duverger’s tenure as Secretary of State for Finance. He held office until the constitution forced a National Election. The election was conducted in circumstances far from favourable with the UNP. Two members of government dismissed, with three others refusing to acknowledge the recommendation from the Council of State to resign. Continuous leakings from within the State Ministries that brought public revelation to the level of corruption developed and encouraged by the UNP caused public outrage and enraged headlines.

The campaign by Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz and the FUP against the political bloc headed by Willem Duverger was fierce and it was brutal. The UNP were ineffectual with their founded arrogance over other parties, they have been in power since 1989 and established the culture of either joining their political bloc or having no chance in governing at all. However, many political commentators believe the numerous remarks over the fact that Katherina was a woman assisted in bringing down the political behemoth, their way of thinking was and is regarded as being quite removed from the reality in which the rest of the Union exists within.

The results

United National Party: 21%, 84 seats

KOLLWITZ' FIRST CABINET

LORD CHANCELLOR FORMS HER FIRST CABINET

Lord Chancellor Katherina Schmidt Kollwitz has formed her first executive cabinet in conclusion to a series of meetings with senior members of her political party, Free Union Party, and those independents who are part of the political allegiance within the Chamber of Representatives.

[IMG2]albumid=97&pictureid=1419[/IMG2] [IMG2]albumid=97&pictureid=1421[/IMG2] [IMG2]albumid=97&pictureid=1420[/IMG2]

In a widely anticipated move Michel Batten (left) was elevated to the office of the State Secretary of Foreign Affairs. The 49 year old has been a senior member of the Free Union Party within the Chamber of Representatives for seven years and was a key figure in Katherina Schmidt Kollwitz’ campaign for the Lord Chancellor. His ascending to the foreign affairs position reinforces his position as an important ally of the Lord Chancellor and while it has yet to be confirmed it is considerably likely that, should the position be carried to the Kollwitz administration, Michel Batten will hold the Lord Vice Chancellor portfolio too.

Michel Batten is regarded as a consensus builder who seeks to strengthen relations with the three former colonial powers of the Free Cities Union, all members of the European Defence Federation, and in particular with Franken. As well as the EDF it is understood that approaching the states of the Alliance for a Greater Europe is to be intended in collaboration with the liberalising of certain sectors of the economy and privatising of nationally held industries such as coal extraction and fisheries. However it is not yet clear as to how the new administration will engage with the League of Free States, although it has been stated that reinforcing the Union’s position within the region and dealing with neighbours such as the Soviet Republic of Meribia is a foreign policy priority.

In regards to the Council of Nations it is not yet clear whether the current delegate from the previous administration, who has substantial experience with this international body, will be withdrawn and replaced.

One of the most significant positions of the Lord Chancellor’s cabinet is the State Secretary of Health, a position that was created by Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz. The responsibility for public health and hospitals has been designated to the City States and the formation of the position would not have been possible if the Free Union Party did not secure a majority in the State Council. The remit of the new state department was immediately negotiated between the Lords of the State Council - who each represent a City State.

The decision to appoint Ursula Luckes (centre) to State Secretary of Health is seen as following the interest of not disrupting the balance of powers between the Federal Government and the City State Executives. Ursula Luckes was a low-key member of the Free Union Party and has been seen as a safe candidate for the position, someone who is unlikely to upstage the City State Executives and bring protest to the State Council. The manifesto pledge on health was well received by the general public. The Lord Chancellor intends to bring the biggest reforms to hospitals and Health Trusts in the history of the Union.

Part of the manifesto pledge in health was to increase standards within public hospitals dramatically, bring in sweeping structural reform and have the private sector take a financial role in Health Trusts in exchange for commercial tax relief.

Heading the tax relief in that area along with a full review of present taxes and the tax system is Hurry Fenwick (right) who was appointed State Secretary of Finance. He intends to streamline the complicated tax system and bring treasury finances into the black with eventual lowering of the national debt. The other cabinet appointments are;

Cabinet of the Lord Chancellor Katherina Schmidt Kollwitz:

State Secretary of Foreign Affairs - Michel Batten

State Secretary of War and National Security - Harold Percy Dean

State Secretary of Finance - Hurry Fenwick

State Secretary of the Interior - Ada Russell

State Secretary of Justice - Saul Landau

State Secretary of Health - Ursula Luckes

GCO WINS DEVELOPMENT RIGHTS

THE LARGE INDUSTRIAL CONGLOMERATE TO BEGIN DEVELOPMENT

It has been learnt that GCO has had it’s bid accepted despite an attempt to proceed with legal action against them by residents within the city state of Cayenne. The Free Unionist controlled executive announced the decision through a local publication.

The K5.2 billion bid is for the development of a designated commercial and light industry site within northern Cayenne. The area has been derelict for two years following the deterioration of food processing within the city state. The bid goes beyond the specifications and limitations of the site, much to the frustration of local residents. A nearby recreational space and small village are included in the plans, which seeks the demolition of the two sites. A petition with eleven thousand signatories, a mass demonstration in central Cayenne, and threats of legal action has not stalled the process of their bid.

GCO’s bid is to invest in the area by way of heavy industry. The development of new carbon steel and stainless steel processing facilities, a slab terminal for the service of raw materials to the carbon steel facility, as well a connecting rail line to the existing freight lines in Cayenne. When completed the facilities will be processing a combined total of 6 million metric tons of carbon and stainless steel annually. A combined total of 3,000 jobs will be created by this development. The development is expected to be completed in 2012.

The Free City League of Commerce and Industry released a brief statement officially acknowledging the auction and that they expect the placed bids and system to be disclosed on Monday as the auction officially concludes tomorrow morning.

A spokesperson from GCO confirmed the acquisition.

FAREWELL SINTERKLAAS AND ZWARTE PIET

Klagenfurt | 7th December 2009

Today the families and friends of Pieterskerk in the south end of Klagenfurt said farewell to Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.

It marked the end of this small community’s seasonal tradition, a tradition which has garnered much attention from locals and people all over the Union who are fascinated by the event. The Sinkerlaas arrived in Klagenfurt by a steam locomotive accompanied by Zwarte Piet on Saturday the 14th of November to a gathering of local families and friends, not just those of the Pieterskerk congregation, with familiar children singing away with popular songs Sinterklaas Kapoentje and Zie Gingds Komt de Stoomboot. Local children not familiar with the cultural heritage did their best to sing along.

For local people and those seasonal tourists it is mostly the great display of the costumes arriving with the seasonal spirit of the Pieterskerk community, and of course the opportunity to catch a hand or two of seasonal sweets. Many people in Klagenfurt see Sinterklaas as a run up to the more widely enjoyed seasonal festivities with the Weihnactsmann, although traditions have taken a more global direction depicting Santa Claus, his reindeers and army of little helpers. Those of the smaller villages and towns in the north still do try to maintain their Saint Nicholas Day heritage, despite the fact Knecht Ruprecht seems to have fallen out of favour with the modern mothers and fathers.

The Lord Chancellor, Katherina Schimdt Kollwitz, extended a goodbye to Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet leaving a few warm seasonal words for the people of Klagenfurt.
