200 RDP officials expelled on graft charges

More than 200 mid-level officials have been expelled from the ruling Revolutionary Democratic Party after it was found they had taken part in "activities counter to the ideals of the Islamic Revolution," the party's anti-corruption chief announced. Speaking at a news conference in Ijad, the party's Central Discipline Commission chairman Ismail Khanum said the officials say the commission's decision to order the expulsions followed an "year-long" extensive investigation on allegations of corruption, which he described as incompatible with Wazistan's Islamic values.

Khanum declined to say whether any criminal charges were expected against the individuals, saying such a decision would be made by government and judiciary officials.

The most senior official reportedly dismissed includes Ali Amir Karroubi, the party's secretary of higher education.

:!: Top Story- Parliament blasts Hajr as "threat" to Islamic Republic

Following two-days of debate, the Majilis parliament overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to declared the Sultanate of Hajr a "threat to the ideals and principles of the Islamic Revolution," a move likely to further strain relations between the two countries. In a statement read out on Wazi TV following the vote, Majilis Speaker Mustafa Halil al-Jafari accused the Hajr government of providing support to Kurdish separatists in the southeast and serving as a "base of operation" for other regional terror organizations.

Jafari says he hopes the resolution would compel President Hamid Najibullah and the government to take the threat of Hajr "far more seriously." There has been no comment at the moment from the presidency.

RDP presidential candidate Abdul Ali Jatani, speaking to local media after meeting with leaders of the United Front, endorsed the parliament's resolution and pledge to "tackle this threat with the energy and vigor it deserves" if he is elected as the country's next president in March. The former head of the ruling party has been one of the strongest critics of the Hajr regime within the RDP and is expected to take much hardline towards the Sultan's government if elected.

Opposition parties boycotted the vote in protest of parliament's decision to dissolve itself later this week for early elections slated to take place in early February.

The accusations of the Wazi parliament are as baseless as they are ludicrous. The Sultanate denies any links to separatists within the "Islamic" Republic's borders, and further proposes that perhaps the Wazi regime should look at its own actions to explain the violent way in which minorities resist Persian rule over their country.

Wazistan is a danger to the stability of the region with its reckless behavior towards peaceful countries such as Hajr. It would do well to cease and desist.

:!: Top Story- President Najibullah to replace two-thirds cabinet

President Hamid Najibullah has decided to replace the majority of his cabinet in the hopes of boosting government efficiency ahead of stepping down in March, presidency officials have told WTV. Najibullah's officials say the president is expected to begin consultation with members of the Politburo of the ruling Revolutionary Democratic Party and lawmakers from the recently dissolved parliament and will likely unveil his new line-up by the end of next week.

Since parliament has been dissolved, none of the president's appointments will have to receive a parliamentary vote on confidence until after the chamber reconvenes in February after upcoming elections.

RDP officials say the president is likely to replaces ministers in the following ministries due to performance: energy and natural resources, communications, urban development, industries, parliamentary affairs, justice, human rights, national infrastructure, and tourism. Many say they do not expect any changes to the top-level posts such as foreign affairs and finances.

Hashmei calls elections for the Assembly of Experts

Ayatollah Kazem Amir Hashmei, chairman of the Assembly of Experts, announced on Saturday that he has decided to call early elections for the clerical body that will take place alongside the upcoming parliamentary vote. Hashmei, making the announcement in a statement posted on his website, says he understands "the enormous" responsible that will fall upon the chamber a package of constitutional reforms are passed in February: the election of a new Leader and Custodian of the Islamic Revolution.

As a result, Hashmei says it is only natural that he could call new elections to rejuvenate the assembly before such an important vote.

Under the 1978 Assembly of Experts Election Act, candidates for the assembly must be experts in Fiqh and be approved to run by the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution. Seats within the assembly of appropriated among the country's provinces and those who received the most voters in their respected regions are considered elected.

The elections will be run by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is also responsible for managing the upcoming parliamentary and constitutional votes.

Top Story- Military announces successful test of medium-range missile

The military has successful test-fired a new medium range missile as part of the government's ongoing efforts to boosting the country's defenses, the country's main missile research agency announced, the first such test in over five years. It is reportedly the first successful test of the country's Ejalal-1 missile since the project was began over ten years ago and could open the way for more missile tests in the future. In a statement read out on state radio, Defense Minister Abdul Amir al-Rashid congratulated the Islamic Republican Air Force and called the test "an important achievement of Wazistan's missile defense program."

Speaking to a gathering of clergy and seminary students in Yazad, Ayatollah Mahmoud Esfandiari, who served as the Leader of the Revolution's military adviser, hailed the test as a shine of Wazistan's "increasing rise."

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Amir Ebrahimi, the head of the IRAF Missile Defense Organization, says the tests was carried out late this afternoon in southern Wazistan and suggested further tests were possible in the coming weeks.

Wazistan's increasingly aggressive posturing is a source of deep concern for Vangala and we urge the League of Free States to temper the actions of the Wazi government and not allow them to cause further upset and destabilisation.

:!: Top Story- President slams opposition "silence" on kidnapped soldiers.

Speaking before a thousands of supporters at a packed stadium in the western port city of Mazem-i-Sharif, President Hamid Najibullah accused the country's opposition of "undermining national unity" and blasted their "scandalous silence" over the kidnapping of two army soldiers in Sine province over the weekend following an ambush by Kurdish separatists on a military convoy. Since the attack, the Islamic National Guard and security forces have blanketed the region in search of the captive soldiers while also hunting down those responsible.

The Interior Ministry has threatened to impose martial law in Sine and surrounding provinces if the soldiers are not located soon.

Despite on statement of condemnation from one opposition member of parliament, the country's opposition parties have largely remained silent on the attack, which also killed nine soldiers, and the captive soldiers. Even the Wazi People's Democratic Organization, the country's main opposition bloc, has failed to issue a single statement on the kidnapping crisis even though the body's executive committee has been in session for more than two weeks discussing the political situation.

As Najibullah spoke, many in the crowd chanted "Death to the KSP (the outlawed Kurdish Social Party)" and "Death to (main opposition leader Jamal) Bishara."

Presidential advisers say the president's decision to visit Mazem-i-Sharif, where Defense Ministry officials say the two hostages are from, was to show that the government's full attention was focused on retrieving the soldiers in good health and bring those responsible to justice.

:!: Top Story- Mahsouli named to vice presidential post as Najibullah reshuffles cabinet

President Hamid Najibullah carried out a major reshuffle of his cabinet Tuesday ahead of general elections next month, the presidency announced in a statement to state television. Among the outgoing 30-member cabinet, only 14 have been retained in the new line-up, a sign analysts say the president is seeking to boost the fortunes of his ruling Revolutionary Democratic Party in the upcoming poll. The cabinet will face a confidence vote in the Majilis parliament when the legislature reconvenes after the February vote.

Social Welfare Minister Heyder Mahsouli has been elevated to a vice presidential post, in what Najibullah associates say was recognition of the minister's "unwavering loyalty to the president." He will also retain his cabinet portfolio. With Mahsouli's appointment, Wazistan will now have seven vice presidents.

Human Rights Minister Amin Sayyad has been promoted to the Justice Ministry in a move likely to please non-governmental organizations and legal advocacy groups. Sayyad has widely been praised within the press and parliament for his effectiveness and job performance. Hashem Allahyari, who has been sitting in the cabinet as a minister without portfolio, will pick up the portfolio.

In a widely expected move, Urban Development Minister Adel Fazeli has been dumped from the cabinet and will be replaced by Ijad Deputy Mayor Hassan al-Haytham. Fazeli has come under fire in recent months over a financial scandal within the ministry that saw more than W$200 million disappear from the agency's Central Housing Relief Program.

Senior ministers, including Defense Minister Abdul Amir al-Rashid and Finance Minister Marwan al-Abdullahi, have been retained and will likely stay on through the end of Najibullah's term.

:!: Top Story- Military confirms test-fire of three short-range missiles

The Islamic Republican Air Force has successfully carried out the test-firing of three short-range missiles as part of the country's ongoing development of its missile defense program, Defense Ministry and military officials have announced. The test involved two ground-to-surface missiles and one ground-to-sea missile, which was fired into the sea off the coast of Gaza. The tests come just two days following the testing of a medium-range missile, the first of its kind in nearly a decade. In a statement posted on its website, the IRAF Missile Defense Organization called the tests "another step forward in our quest to secure our national borders" and called on the Wazi people to celebrate this "important achievement."

President Hamid Najibullah, speaking to reporters while on a tour of Rabat province, congratulated the military on what he described as a "seamless" launch . A spokesman for the presidency says Najibullah will meet IRAF commander Lt. Gen. Mohammad Radan for a report on the tests.

Following the test of the Ejalal-1 missile earlier in the week, several nations in Himyar have also carried out missile tests, including the Sultanate of Hajr. Both the Foreign Ministry and military have declined to comment on those recent tests.

Esfandiari backs Najibullah cabinet reshuffle

Former military adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Mahmoud Esfandiari expressed support Thursday for the recent government reshuffle carried out by President Hamid Najibullah, rejecting criticism that the move was unnecessary with only three months left in his term. Speaking to a closed-door gathering of religious scholars in Kalibar, Esfandiari expressed concern recent criticism of the president's move by politicians in the media would "undermine the performance of the government at critical time" and suggests remarks be relayed "within the corridors of the government," according to one scholar attending the event.

Ayatollah Esfandiari, the brother of the late Leader Mohammed Abdul Yassin, is running for a seat in the Assembly of Experts in the upcoming February elections.

The Islamic Scholars Union Association says it invited Esfandiari to speak today on important current events and said it should not be considered an endorsement on his candidacy.

A number of officials within the ruling Revolutionary Democratic Party have questioned the president's reshuffle, which effect more than half of the cabinet, saying it will disrupt government programs in progress and could hamper the party's election campaign. The RDP is seeking to retain its two-thirds majority in the Majilis parliament to secure the election of its standard-bearer Abdul Ali Jatani in March's presidential elections.
