Memorial Ceremony Held For 6 Dead Crewmen of Tien Hau
The nation held a moment of silence on Monday morning as businesses across the country observed a national holiday honoring the first Yujiner casualties in the Solaren conflict. The MV Tien Hau, which was struck by a Yujin-made missile launched from Solaren, sank beneath the waves Saturday. Of the 27 crew aboard the vessel, 4 were killed in blasts on the deck as containers containing pyrophoric chemicals exploded as the fires on the deck raged. Another 12 were injured, with 2 more crewmen succumbing to their wounds aboard the life rafts. The attack has caused outrage in Yujin, with many politicians criticizing the sale of Yujin-made C-611 Silkworms and other such munitions to Solaren. The majority of politicians, including the President, however, have blamed Carentania, Breotonia, Frescania, Khalistan, and a sleu of other nations responsible for maintaining the security of vital shipping lanes that are the lifeline of the economies of Eastern nations.
President Yang, hosting a press conference after the moment of silence, called upon nations across the world to come together to combat the increasing instability in Solaren, and the threat this presents to the world. "There are many questions to be asked. Who is responsible for this attack? How did it occur? Was the Republic of Yujin the intended target? Why now? These are questions that lay in the past, however. We must look towards the future if we are to push forward and progress. We must work together with nations throughout the Long Sea, and indeed the world, in establishing laws, regulations, and joint security forces designed to combat threats to international shipping wherever the arise. We ask those nations which questioned the authenticity of the attack recognize our loss, and work together with us to prevent this crisis from creating a rift that can only create more troubles."
The President further promised that this tragedy would not lead to further Yujin deaths, and has promised that retaliation against the Solaren state would be purely diplomatic. Despite this, numerous GGD politicians have called for a comprehensive expansion of the Yujin Navy, and have argued that the recent white paper published by the military did not 'go far enough'. "We need to be able to provide international security for our merchant vessels around the world if we are to continue supporting national growth. This goal needs to be accomplished by 2012, not 2014," stated Wan Li, the GGD candidate currently running to take the Senate seat in Qiangzhu Province away from incumbent Shen Bingdan.
A formal investigation is being launched to determine the origins of the attacks, however authorities have stated that any investigation run within Solaren itself will be conducted jointly with Carentanian officials. Questions have arisen over whether Carentanian involvement was complicit, or whether the strike was conducted without their knowledge. These answers will be important as overtures are made towards Carentania on jointly cooperating to secure Long Sea trade routes. Carentania has conducted numerous operations in the region where the missile was fired from, however has adopted a policy of minimal security in captured regions, attempting to deliver a coup de grâce to the Solaren regime before any significant insurgency could begin. It would appear that this strategy is beginning to falter, and it will be important for Carentanian forces to adapt to the conflict as it evolves before them.
