Funeral and Coronation Planned

Following the announcement of Duke Martino della Torre's death, the Torriani house has released the formal announcements for Martino's funeral, as well as the coronation of His Royal Highness Count Guido della Torre. The funeral will be held this Saturday in Venosa. Count Guido has openly thanked all those who sent condolences to the Torriani family, and has stated that anyone wishing to attend the funeral and memorial will be welcomed to do so, and may stay as guests at the Torriani family's expense. The duke's coffin will be taken through the city to the cathedral, where it will be left for the memorial service.

The coronation of Guido della Torre will continue as planned at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in San Salvo, and has been scheduled for Monday. The Torriani heir stated that it would be inappropriate to hold the coronation before the funeral, though he has been serving as the Torriani regent since his father's death was announced. Count Guido said that all those wishing to attend the coronation would be welcomed to do so as well. He will officially assume the role of Duke of Venosa the Tuesday following.

Torriani House Holds Funeral

Carabinieri sectioned off sections of Venosa earlier today as the funeral of Duke Martino della Torre was held. His coffin, draped with the ancient colors of the Torriani house, was brought through the streets to the Cathedral of Saint Cambria, where an open coffin memorial service was held. The vast majority of the other royal houses within Potenza were in attendance.

Count Guido della Torre, current acting head of the Torriani house and soon-to-be Duke of Venosa, gave the eulogy for his father. He praised Martino for his strength in the face of adversity and his ability to maintain proper relations between the Torriani and the other houses during some of Potenza's more turbulent times during the last century. Grand Duke Eldizio I also spoke, saying that Martino was a bright mind and a good friend, and he wished the favor of Fortune on the Torriani house following Guido's succession.

The coronation for Guido is set for next week, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in San Salvo. The nation first took notice of Guido in his youth when, after a parade accident, he lost one of his legs. Since then, however, the count had grown up in relative silence and privacy, only appearing again when he was appointed Lord Speaker of the Chamber of Nobles. The nation will no doubt be turning their eyes on him again as he takes the role of Duke of Venosa.

Guido della Torre Ascends Duchy of Venosa

Count Guido della Torre's coronation as Duke of Venosa and Duke of the House of della Torre was held earlier today in San Salvo. In a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Annunciation and attended by almost all members of the Chambers of Nobles and Ministers, Count Guido received the Torriani ducal medal which he will be able to wear on special occasions or when he is executing his role as duke. With the coronation, he may now be properly addressed as Duke Guido della Torre.

After the parade accident in his childhood that left Guido handicapped with one leg, there had been some discussion as to whether or not Guido would be able to fulfill his role as duke when the time came for his ascension. Some suggested that his younger brother, the Count Gavino della Torre, be chosen as successor. As recent as 2001 there were discussions about the possibility of Duke Martino choosing Gavino over Guido as the heir, but his gradual descent into dementia delayed any such decision indefinitely.

His Royal Highness Duke Guido della Torre left shortly after the coronation to attend the debutante ball of Princess Rebecca of Havenshire in Franken. He was accompanied by many fellow nobles from the Houses of Grimaldi, Visconti, and Cornaro.

"Commercial Zones" for Foreign Businesses Enacted

Prime Minister Gaetano Merlino announced today that "commercial zones" had been formed throughout the nation in an effort to encourage foreign investment in Potenza. After discussions with the Duchies of Venosa and Turin, several areas of land near large areas of urban development have been set aside with the land offered at discount prices for foreign businesses wishing to set up industry or centers of trade and business. This will be coordinated through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, with Minister Vincenzo Visco assuring as little trouble as possible for foreign investors.

Some minority representatives in the Chamber of Ministers have protested the move, saying it will hurt Potenzan businesses and domestic markets. Merlino responded to criticism in a session of the Chamber held earlier today, saying that this was foreign investment "under control," and that Potenzan businesses had already been expanding at home and overseas at a "quicker than expected rate." He also argued that this would provide employment for the local populations.

Po-Danish Trade Deal Signed

Minister of Economy and Finance Vincenzo Visco met with Rikard Magnussen, the Danish Trade, Investment and Industry Minister to finalize a massive trade agreement between the grand duchy and the kingdom. This had come after various discussions through the Danish embassies at the behest of Prime Minister Gaetano Merlino.

Among the many details of the treaty include relaxed regulations for foreign professionals, the abolishing of agricultural tariffs, and lowered tariffs for non-agricultural goods. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has also offered Danish businesses first call on all "commercial zones" established last week, as well as greater discounts for the purchase of the land. In return, Danmark has offered similar commercial areas; the Beretta and Fornasari companies have already expressed interest in opening up plants within Danmark. There was also the creation of a "Competition Commissioner" whose role will be to handle disputes between Potenzan and Danish businesses. Minister Visco explained that the commissioner would not dictate economic polices and would be hands off in regards to the day-to-day affairs of business, but would serve as a kind of referee when a problem emerged that might disrupt the agreement.

The trade deal was well met in the Chamber of Nobles, with 553 ministers approving of the treaty, the only detractors coming from some circles in the Democratic Party, as well as the entirety of seats held by the Southern League and Potenzan Socialist Party. Analysts believe Grand Duke Eldizio I will approve of the treaty, as it involves a unilateral cooperation between the grand duchy and Danmark, rather than the grand duchy and the German League.

There has also been talk of the creation of a merchant fleet after the offer by the Danish government of the use of the Free Port of Fredrikshavn. The prime minister did not say anything was set in stone yet, but there has been interest by his government in creating a Potenzan merchant fleet to operate exclusively in international waters and foreign ports. Whether this fleet would transport exclusively Potenzan goods or would offer its services to other nations has not yet been discussed.

Second Phase of Operation Reconquista Begins

The Ministry of Law Enforcement announced yesterday that the second phase of Prime Minister Merlino's Operation Reconquista was to begin. Starting this morning, Carabinieri officers have begun to visit schools across Potenza - in particularly in schools located in hot spots of crime or unrest. The positions differ from age group to age group, but the overall goal is the same: to improve the image of Carabinieri to those among the lower classes, and to raise the level of trust in cooperating with Carabinieri in neighborhood cleanups. This was accompanied by ministry officials meeting with community leaders to discuss a more extensive crime watch among the citizenry.

Operation Reconquista was started shortly after Merlino's election in 2011 with the mobilization of extensive Carabinieri numbers across crime hot spots in the Grand Duchy. The goal was to end what many believed was a crisis facing the nation with rampant crime and rising murder rates. At the end of the election, about 15% of deaths in Potenza were attributed to murder (most of it gang related), but last April, four months after Reconquista had begun, that figure had dropped to 1%.

Law Enforcement Minister Mariastella Gelmini explained to journalists that Reconquista was now switching from response to prevention, meaning that now that the crisis had been put under control, the ministry would attempt to make sure that the crisis would not resurface. She explained that once communities were aware that the police force was competent enough to maintain control and defend citizens, they would willingly cooperate with the ministry in combating localized crime.

News of this apparent success comes as 400 Carabinieri officers are being sent to Zamosca to assist in the training of a national police . The group, nicknamed Task Force Himyar (TFH), is comprised of roughly 300 men and 100 women, and will serve as instructors and advisers for the Zamoscan forces.

Opposition parties have criticized Merlino's government for seemingly playing small government with the economy but big government with law enforcement and the military, and say that a more pervasive police force cannot be entirely healthy for democratic progression. This criticism grew especially loud after word came out that Merlino and Grand Duke Eldizio I held discussions about the possibility of creating an "intelligence branch" of the Law Enforcement Ministry.

Countess Adalina di Morosini Flees Country

Late yesterday evening, the Morosini countess Adalina, youngest daughter to Gustavo di Morosini, Duke of Cremona, went missing. She was on her way towards Turin to begin a courtship with the Grimaldi heir Count Stefano and had called to say she would be late, but had not shown up for most of the day. The Duchy of Turin attempted to contact her, only to find that the Duchy of Cremona was unaware of her whereabouts as well. The Ministry of Law Enforcement was immediately notified, who began a hunt for the vehicle, which had last been seen leaving Cremona towards Turin. The ministry's San Salvo department then received a phone call that the vehicle would be at San Salvo airport, in the parking garage. The vehicle was found, with the Carabinieri assigned to her guard left in the trunk, stripped of his uniform. Eyewitnesses at the airport said they had seen her in the airport dressed in the uniform.

It has now been announced through the Talemantine embassy in San Salvo that Adalina is safe and sound within the Talemantine Empire, and has been taken under the care of her aunt Tecla, who is married to Duke Gavino de Vesci. Nothing else was said, although it seems clear that the courtship with Count Stefano has been called off, and Adalina does not seem to intend to return to the Grand Duchy.

Rumors have been circling for some time that Duke Gustavo physically abuses his children, in particular Adalina. While these were subdued over time, they have resurfaced again as many speculate on the specific reason for Adalina's self-imposed exile. Some within the Chamber of Ministers who represent districts in the Duchy of Cremona have already asked for Duke Gustavo to step down. Given precedent, only the Grand Duke or the Chamber of Ministers have the power to ask a duke to step down.

Chamber of Ministers Votes Duke Gustavo Out

The Chamber of Ministers met yesterday to hold deliberation over the recent scandal involving His Royal Highness Duke Gustavo di Morosini, the current Duke of Cremona, after the self-exile of his daughter, Her Royal Highness Countess Adalina di Morosini. The countess had fled Potenza for Talemantros after reports that her father had been physically abusing her, and after an arrangement for her to marry the heir of the Grimaldi house. There had been rumors that Gustavo may be removed from his position or asked to abdicate his ducal title, but Prime Minister Merlino had unilaterally decided to bring this matter before Potenza's elected body.

After much discussion and debate, the Chamber of Ministers decided, in a near unanimous vote, to call for the abdication of Duke Gustavo di Morosini from his seat in the Duchy of Cremona. In a public statement to the press, Prime Minister Merlino reminded everything that all within the House of Grimaldi were not to blame, as they were only involved insofar as accepting the arranged marriage, and that the House of Morosini as a whole was not to be vilified. However, Merlino stated, Gustavo had "failed in his role as defender of those subjects under him, and had proven a bad example for Potenzan fathers." Merlino also said that the Chamber voted to permit Countess Adalina to return without any charge made against her.

According to the Constitution of 1828, the Chamber of Ministers has no power to compel any noble to abdicate save for the Grand Duke himself. However, according to legislative tradition, the Chamber of Ministers is capable of voting to suggest the abdication of a noble, which will then be sent to the Grand Duke. Eldizio I is expected to respond to this vote by tomorrow morning.

Duke Gustavo has suffered in acceptance polls in the past, but a recent poll conducted by Il Ducato shows that only 23% of Potenzans support his staying in position. He has often had the impression on the populace as something as a bully, and the recent scandal has caused an uproar against his character. Many see this as something from a movie, with the mean father forcing his daughter to marry a man she doesn't want, and the daughter finally searching for a way out. Small protests have already formed across Cremona and various parts of the duchy, calling for the abdication (and, at some protests, exile) of Duke Gustavo. Some protestors carried signs that read "Come back, Adalina - Potenza loves you."

Duke Gustavo di Morosini Exiled

The Grand Duke's office announced earlier today that Duke Gustavo di Morosini, the Duke of Cremona, was forced to abdicate his position, and has now been given a week to leave Potenza. No other details were given over the discussion held between Grand Duke and Cremonan duke, although there are rumors that Gustavo assaulted Eldizio I when the latter questioned him about the charges of child abuse. The Grand Duke's office did affirm that all charges that could possibly be charged against Countess Adalina - which would include assaulting, kidnapping, and impersonating a Carabinieri - have been absolved.

It is uncertain at this moment where exactly Gustavo di Morosini will go. As his son, Mario, is currently set to attend the Royal Military Academy, Eldizio I has appointed Count Mauro di Morosini, Gustavo's younger brother, to be regent for the Morosini household until Mario finishes his education.

Military Exercises Held

Many Potenzans might have been amazed by the number of jets in the air over certain parts of the country. It was all part of a military exercise held by the Regia Aeronautica to test the nation's defense readiness. The exercises mainly involved the 4th and 5th Wings, as well as the radar squadrons under the Operations Command. The main concerns were the rapidness of mobilization, communication abilities, as well as overall cooperation between the various units.

Sergio Mattarella, Minister of Defense, explained that, given Potenza's landlocked status and the lack of concern of threats from her neighbors, the highest priority was air capability. "If someone were to invade us by land," Mattarella said to journalists, "we would have some level of preparedness, as they'd have to attack our neighbors first. Therefore, the only other option would have to be by air."

The exercises will continue tomorrow and then stop. Some ground exercises are expected to be carried out by the Regio Esercito next week in the Duchy of Treviso.

Law Enforcement Exercises

On the eve of the recent exercises carried out by the Regia Aeronautica, as well as the winding down of Operation Reconquista which Gaetano Merlino's government has declared a success, the prime minister recently announced that the Ministry of Law Enforcement would begin exercises that simulated the discovery - as well as reaction to - terrorist attacks. This decision came after the terrorist attack in Altai, as well as the riots in Engellexic-controlled Montelimar, which resulted in fierce clashes between revolutionary factions and police. There had been some concern from minority parties as to whether or not the Grand Duchy was ready for such an attack, either from terrorist or revolutionary circles. Fears were especially heightened in light of the Turin Riot Scandal which occurred earlier this year.

The exercises will seek to enable and encourage greater cooperation between the various local departments of the Ministry of Law Enforcement, as well as the Carabinieri units and the newly expanded Department of Internal Security (DIS), the latter which monitors possible espionage inside the Grand Duchy. Many of these exercises will take place in the Carabinieri training centers found in the Duchy of Venosa.
