Elia Neven holds the State of the Nation address in front of the Senate
The State of the Nation address is a yearly speech given by the head of the government in front of the senate, presenting the state of the country and announcing the new policies for the next year. Usually the address is given on the 15th of February, but this year, the speech has been delayed by the chaos of the coup organised by Saig Madec and afterwards by the Snowdrop Revolution. Now, with the election and the referendum finished, the state of the nation was given by Benadur Elia Neven in front of the Prometheist dominated Senate.
The Benadur surprised more radical members of her party and opposition alike, as she started her speech with a quote from the Bible, from Acts, chapter four, calling for unity and solidarity among the people of Caledonia. The state of the Nation address comes after a lengthy meeting between the Abbot of the Dulas Monastery, Abbot Ronan, who is recognised as the highest authority of the Church in Caledonia and the main leaders of the Prometheist League and the Socialist Christian Party. The way the speech was opened has made clear what many analysts have thought of when they heard of the meeting between the leaders of the Church and of the state. The Prometheist League will cohabit and even support the Church. There have been concerns during and immediately after the Snowdrop Revolution that the prometheists will break the Church and the state and thus will foster animosity between the people, but it seems that they have been baseless.
In her speech, Elia Neven has called for peace in the north and for the Caitmen to accept what the majority of Caledonians have voted, regarding the republic. She has presented an 10 point plan meant to bring Caledonia back in the forefront of international politics by modernising it and by stripping away the colonial unnecessary baggage.
The Benadur called for the end of international isolation and an opening in the relationship between Caledonia and the Commonwealth of Gallega, while still respecting the provisions of the Northern Status Quo treaty. Economically, the Benadur proclaimed that the government will socialise strategic industries, by issuing bonds to help the workers buy stocks in the companies they work. There will also be a series of nationalisations, especially of the railways, the service companies like the gas and electricity distributors and of the National Corporation of Constructions, a previously government owned construction company which was privatised by the Olivia mab Andras cabinet in 2015.
Socially, the government will push for a new and modern civil code which will legalise same-sex marriage and allow for abortion if the pregnancy endangers the life of the woman, if the fetus is not viable, if the pregnancy resulted from rape, for the others, the Benadur stating that contraception is a more viable and better way of avoiding pregnancy. Elia Neven also stated that the first social dividends will begin to be received by the end of the year, as the economy will stabilise.
As for the relationship with the Church, the Benadur decreed that the prometheist government will support the "Early Roots Theology" of Abbot Ronan of the Dulas Monastery, which will support the creation of christian communities based on the original early Christians whom reject capitalism, vanity and greed and live on distributism and solidarity. The Prometheist League has decided to adopt this form of radical Christianity by allying itself with the Socialist Christian party. Theologically, the "Early Roots Theology" is very similar to the Fraticelli of the medieval times.
