Himyar Square was at the centre of Propontis' Pan-Himyari district, an art-deco segment between the Old City of Christoupolis and the newer suburbs of the port districts. Reminiscent of a time when Pan-Himyarism still seemed like a viable ideology to the Pelasgian intellectual elite and populace, during the Attalid Reform, the district housed the headquarters of most important Himyari organisations and companies in Propontis, both Pelasgian and foreign, as well as the consulates and embassies of the Himyari states and a sizeable population of expatriates from the rest of Himyar, both temporary and permanent.
Given its character as an international district for all Himyaris of sorts, the district was notorious throughout Himyar for being a meeting point of all sorts of clandestine organisations, crime syndicates and intelligence agencies. The police mostly avoided dealing with the first two, as long as they did not harm any locals, mostly so as to avoid accidentally interfering with the third group, which more often than not involved the Krypteia.
Sitting at the balcony of a second-storey ouzerie, two men, dressed in tropical clothes typical for late-spring Propontis calmly discussed over a cup of ouzo, surveying Himyar Square with through their sunglasses.
"Did you hear about this Himyari People's Union business? I'll fancy we'll be hearing and seeing a lot more of them around here."
"These Nethians are fools. They'll never overthrow the Pelasgian Throne with a communist revolt, no matter how many regional rebels they get on their side. Pelasgia hasn't even gone through liberal nationalism yet; if anyone's abolishing the Throne, it'll be the bourgeoisie."
"That's what they used to say about Kadikistan. And look where the Kadikistani Czars are now."
"And the Laskarids learned from their cousins' failure: they keep the Pelasgians fed, they let the Church run the schools, and they field a professional army. If it's anyone who'll be un-crowning the eagle, it'll be some republican officers funded by some shipping magnate or another."
"Well, it was some Melingian teenagers who blew up the last Regent."
"Yes. And now we have another Laskaris in his place. How convenient of the Krypteia to slack on that day."
