LA GRANDE VICTOIRE!

In a brilliant victory for the Mergognard Right, the Parti National won a plurality of seats in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies this week, propelling Mergogne's largest conservative party to a position of strength in Parliament that it has not seen for nearly two decades. The General Election's outcome was hailed by community leaders across the political spectrum as a great victory for morality, justice, and order in the Republic, as the former Libéral-controlled government made preparations for the transition of power. The PN will be entering into a coalition with the smaller Parti pour la Restauration Royale and Front Mergognard to form a majority government. The current leader of the conservatives, war hero "Le Maréchal" Jean-Marie Durand, will become the new Chancèlier of the Republic.

Shown below are the final results of the elections for the 278 seats in the Senate, and the 485 in the Chamber of Deputies.

Unsubstantiated accusations of electoral malfeasance made by the Sociales-Démocrates were dismissed by the public, as multiple third party observers from public groups, ranging from the Church to various unions, dismissed such claims. In addition, the National Electoral Commission has put forward a statement praising the integrity of the election, based on initial impressions. The NEC will report its findings in total later next week. Riots by radical and extremist groups who would challenge the election's results are expected in Brivonne, Sablechaud, Marète-sur-Calice, and Belle-Forêt.

In a brief speech delivered at the party headquarters, Durand cited "[This] mandate given to me by the Mergognard people, and by the providence of our Lord" in his justification for the NP's new and far-reaching platform. Goals of top importance to the new administration are stated as "reinvigorating Mergognard industry and commerce, strengthening our valiant armed forces, arresting and reversing the spread of the Communist blight, and restoring moral integrity and public order to our society." Acknowledging that the stated goals for his new administration were ambitious, Durand noted that the spirit and indomitable will of the Mergognard nation would be a driving force behind what he was convinced would become the most prosperous era in the country's history.

We sent our cordial felicitations as the indomitable Grand Marshall of repute, Jean-Marie Durand, takes his place among the hallowed predecessors as Chancellor of Mergogne. We are sure that this is a significant event within the nation and the scale of his victory cannot be underestimated and should be viewed as it really is: historic.

Christiansborg feels that the victory of the Grand Marshall heralds a significant turning point in Dano-Megognoise relations in especial respect of the circumscribing of the latent advent of aggressive communist threat to the civilised world. Dressing themselves in the cloak of the innocent lamb, this rapacious and unsatisfied beast truly intends on a course of devouring the most innocent and shoving pitch-forks, or sickles in their case, into the eyes and across the jugulars of the true and honest peoples of the globe. It takes many clever forms but moderate and civilised peoples should always be on the watch on their subterranean activities.

We are also most pleased to see that the Grand Marshall intends to reinvigorate the armed forces of Mergogne and public life, smiting the erosion of age-old values of decency, respect, family and integrity. For us, this has not come too soon. It is important that this key Francophone nation stakes its true place in the domain of the Gauloise folk and seizes the opportunity to lead the region in conjunction with neighbouring powers for the good of all.

An Extension of The Queen-Empress' Statement in Council.
DULWICH, SUNDAY, 7th OCTOBER 1952

TO THE CHANCELLOR, PARLIAMENTARIANS, AND THE COMMONERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF MERGOGNE
I am instructed to PRIVATELY EXPRESS on behalf of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty;

I am desirous to extend the sincere commendations of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty, the Queen-Empress Charlotte, and her Majesty’s Imperial Cabinet, to his Excellency the Chancellor Jean-Marie Durand of the Republic of Mergogne, and to also extend our appreciation of the re-entry of the Republic of Mergogne upon the European stage; it is sincerely hoped that much can be achieved through the honourable co-operation of the Empire of Great Engellex and the Republic of Mergogne.

Concerning Chancellor Jean-Marie Durand’s schemes and opinions about communism, the sooner your Administration dispatches your grounds for co-operation the better. It is very possible that many parts of Europe would be better governed by Great Engellex, Frescania, and Mergogne than they are now; and we need not go beyond Havenshire, Solaren, and Carentania for examples. But an establishment of close co-operation between Great Engellex and Mergogne, itself derived not just simply from the strength of our military and naval power, but also from the force of the moral principle upon which both nations take such positions on with respect to communism, would certainly encourage a firm and European resistance to the growth and activities of that terrible and most disagreeable ideology. It is most certainly the belief of her Majesty’s Imperial Cabinet that a partnership between our two capitals, founded on our mutual resistance to unjust aggression, the defence of the weak against the strong, and the maintenance of the existing balance of power, should be mutually encouraged by our two capitals.

His Grace, the DUKE of NONSUCH,
By the Grace of GOD, of the EMPIRE of GREAT ENGELLEX, CHARLOTTE, the QUEEN-EMPRESS,
through the FIRST LORD of ALDWYCH D'EVERCY

MERCREDI 10 OCTOBRE, 1952

ANTICOMMUNIST MEASURES PASSED BY PARLIAMENT

A new judicial measure passed in both houses of Parliament yesterday, striking a blow to the radical menace in Mergogne that has struck fear into every decent citizen of the country's metropolises. The "Justice for Radical Brigandry Act of 1952" came down to a very narrow vote, with obstructionist leftist party members protesting shrilly against the Act's passage. The Act, introduced by several legislators from the Front Mergognard, will double the severity of sentences for leftists or those with leftist sympathies who have committed acts of political violence, and will make other violent crimes committed by such persons liable for investigation as acts of political violence. Furthermore, it will give all police forces greater powers in investigating possible liaisons between the culprits and larger radical networks in planning and executing said crimes.

Leftist politicians, who have nothing to fear from the act should they abstain from the vicious path taken by some of their constituency's more sinister elements, made a particularly loud display of protest, with one Deputy from the Sociales-Démocrates resigning. Leaders from the Dockworkers' Union praised the idea, with one spokesman claiming that it would "help the community route out subversive elements in our midst". Members of national and local police forces also acclaimed the new measure, claiming that it would help them in bringing communist agitators to justice.

In other news, amidst the appointment of new ministers in the PN government, the Office of the Chancèlier reported that it was reformulating its foreign policy towards leftist nations, and would soon develop a cohesive diplomatic stance that would better reflect "the values of this government and the Mergognard people".

RESPÙBLICA POPULARE DA CAIETA
dal officio da aiutante-generale pros affari d'oltremare

The People's Republic can only condemn this most recent piece of legislation from the Mergognard Parliament, a blow as it is against the most basic principles of democracy. The institutionalized discrimination of individuals and groups based upon their beliefs and political affiliations is a wholly reprehensible practice, and one which runs contrary to the concepts of liberty and just franchise. Radicalism, agitators, and "subversive elements" will be found just as readily on all ends of the political spectrum, and the persecution of one particular end is a characteristic of a naked reactionary -- this aggrandizement of the various law enforcement paramilitary forces in favor of the conservative bloc certainly being a startling and very much disappointing development.

The People's Republic hopes that this bill will be repealed, with time. The use of state institutions to satisfy political rivalries (this certainly being an effort by the ruling party to consolidate its position) is unsettling, and we hope that -- despite our fears -- no further untoward actions will be taken against the socialist community in Mergogne.

Contrary to the claims of M. da Cierda, it is the most solemn duty of the Republican to defend his way of life from the creeping encroachment of Communism — its most violent strains in particular. The true threat to democracy is the use of political violence to silence critics through fear, and to murder and destroy property in the name of a utopian revolution. This is exactly the dynamic that has besieged Mergognard society, and against which the new Parti National administration will tirelessly fight.

In recognition of the international peril posed by communist agitation, the Fennian government notes that the elected government of Mergogne is fully entitled to act in protection of its citizenry against such menaces. That such measures are undertaken serves as a sign that the government of Mergogne has a vested interest in the protection of its citizens and the maintenance of public order and stability in their country and enables confidence that our friends desire to do their own part in the opposition to international agitator forces.

NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE INITIATIVES REVISITED

As one of the new administration's first decisions since its inauguration, Chancèlier Durand and the conservatives in Parliament have reinvigorated several defense and national security programs that had been abandoned under the liberal government. Chief among the initiatives include a major increase in the size of the National Strategic Stockpile, renewed focus on several defense logistics efforts, and a restart of numerous general military reforms, including weapon modernization and procurement programs. While the new efforts will provide a modest stimulus to the Mergognard economy, the newly-appointed spokesman for the Manoir Neuf, Bastien Cluny commented that the primary purpose of the new spending is to "revitalize the greatest pride of Mergogne: her armed forces". Another very important factor in the government's decision, according to sources within the Parti National, is the recent warmongering and military buildups by communist and regional countries.

The new program will dramatically increase the government reserves of POL (petroleum, oils, and lubricants), gasoline, rubber, medical supplies and basic chemical compounds, canned goods, various machine parts, coal, steel, and other important strategic items. The new plans also call for the introduction of several new categories of strategically important goods, including stockpiles for sulfur ore, iron ore, and bauxite. The physical depots themselves (situated throughout the country), as well as the infrastructure necessary for distribution, are also going to be repaired and modernized as part of the program. While domestic suppliers of the required products are prioritized as the first potential sources for the larger stockpiles, offers from abroad will also be considered by the Office of National Security and War (ONSW).

The larger share of the new reforms will be dominated by weapons research, procurements, logistical reconfigurations, doctrinal revisions, and a minor restructuring of the national reserve system, Far less information is available about these other programs, in part due to their classified nature, but the reforms are said to be "wide-ranging and thorough" in their scope. The new projects are also said to be drawing on eligible pools of nation's unemployed in many of the construction and manual labor efforts. On the technological front, recently uncovered technical appraisals of many categories of Mergognard military equipment contained recommendations for modernization, upgrading, and retrofitting. While the internal recommendations are expected to be quite helpful in improving the armed forces, the ONSW and Office of External Affairs are also intending to send out delegations to gather information on "best-practices" among friendly nations who would agree to a certain degree of cooperation on the issues of defense and weapons research. Sources within the ONSW have reported that these partnerships could extend to other types of military cooperation, or possibly a full-fledged alliance with the Republic.

While several of the misguided approaches to reform pursued by the previous liberal government had to be revised by the ONSW, it is believed that the numerous studies, years of data collection, and intensive inspection of defense policies and doctrine will yield a "more efficient, formidable, and modern armed forces", according to a ONSW spokesman.

On behalf of the Fennian people I can say that the Mergognard commitment to its national security and defense signals strong will of the government to defend its people, social values and European peace as a whole. It is indeed true that in these trying times such measures are required, and we have also received the Mergognard call of cooperation with likeminded powers. For the sake of order and prosperity in our nations and the defense of Christianity against forces of godlessness and terror, defense of common values is a necessity of survival in this era.

Thus, I will personally invite the representatives of the Mergognard government to Kalevala for the purpose of promotion of greater ties and cooperation between our two nations, in defense of common values against common enemies. The friendship currently enjoyed between the Fennian and Mergognard governments and our common values of European civilization lead me to believe that a bright road is ahead of us in this regard.

General Joakim Häyhä,
Stateholder of the Union,
Commander-in-Chief of the Fennian Union Army

The Mergognard government thanks its Fennian comrades for their words, and is heartened to see that their nation still serves as a bastion of order and righteous resistance to the international forces of chaos and indecency. The Mergognard defense and foreign ministries are thrilled at the opportunity to send a high-level delegation to Kalevala to discuss further avenues of cooperation between our two governments, who place such great a value on a virtuous, civilized Europe.

GABRIEL DAM NEARING COMPLETION

After years of inactivity under the previous Social Democrat administration, work is nearing completion on Le Barrage Gabriel — the largest hydroelectric power project in the history of the Republic. Drawing on talents of thousands of laborers, architects, electricians, engineers, and other specialists, the Dam draws on the currents of the mighty Calice River to provide power to the nation's capital, as well as the city of Sèrchy-en-Bois. There are also plans to construct transmissions infrastructure to provide power to Marète-sur-Calice, as well as other regions of the nation. After identifying a site along the Calice and beginning construction in 1946, Montgarny S.A. construction crews made steady progress on the Dam until a series of incidents, setbacks, and obstacles erected by the Beaugant government delayed work in 1950. Momentum picked up again towards the end of the Beaugant administration, with work truly resuming in earnest within the early months of Chancèlier Durand's term. As of today, the work that remains include some minor retrofitting of the turbines, as well as general quality assurance and testing. Once ready for power production, the Dam will be staffed by personnel from the national utility, along with several technical advisors from Montgarny S.A.

One of Chancèlier Durand's primary goals since taking office has been ensuring the completion of the Gabriel Dam. With the investment of tens of millions of Livres, the Mergognard nation truly deserved to see the fruits of her labors. The Dam will serve not only as an enduring testament to the indomitable will and ingenuity of the Mergognard people, but also a technologically advanced source of energy for this modern age. Le Maréchal has indeed worked tirelessly to ensure that, for reasons both strategic and economical, the Crièvres region has access to new sources of electrical power. To ensure the security of the Dam, security forces from both private firms and the national army are present at and around the Dam.

A large unveiling ceremony is expected to take place at the Dam upon it's opening.
