The Military Industrial Journal is the leading source for military and defense industry related analysis and news from around the world, with a special emphasis and focus on the Far West and Thaumantic Horizon, and those global actions or initiatives undertaken by nations and powers from these regions. Drawing on the unique accomplishments, experiences and former field actions of a variety of industry insiders, veterans and private military professionals, the Military Industrial Journal provides unparalleled insight and analysis of military capabilities, declassified defense industry projects and global arms trends, regional political instability, sectarian strife, private military opportunities and competitive open source intelligence dossiers and reports.

Founded in Hammer Bay in 1984 by Roger Dorn and Lionel Jansen, squad-mates and veterans of the Sagebrush Country Disturbances of the late 1970s, the no-nonsense style and inside track provided by this publication ensured its quick ascent to the top of the charts for defense-themed magazines in the Engellish-speaking Thaumantic Horizon. Intent upon ensuring that it continues to remain as relevant as possible with the rise of Digital Media, the Military Industrial Journal has expanded to include both an online blog and military arms analysis video channel (including DIY guides and product reviews), MJI now employs more than 40 regular contributors hailing from nearly every country within the Thaumantic Horizon. The Military Industrial Journal is strongly supportive of the Engellexic Model of Civilization, and is committed to the exaltation of the individual and those ancestral virtues, including native martial vigor and undimmed thirst for liberty, that have and continue to define the Sea Peoples of the Thaumantic Horizon.
OOC Note: Please get in touch with me before contributing, for now, to ensure that this conforms to the style and vision of the project. Collaboration is welcomed, so long as it adheres to the topics set forth for each issue.

Beloved of the Fighting Man - the Adaptive Service Rifle

by: Wade Karst
March-April, 2019; Region: West Thaumantic

Perhaps the single most defining characteristic of Far Western small arms weapons systems in the second half of the 20th Century was the notable trend towards platform modularity, utilitarian parts compatibility and the so-called universal weapons systems they enabled. Primary examples of this paradigm include the legendary R60/ISW60 platform fielded for the First and Confederated Republics by the LeMat-Picatinny Rifle Company or the Sylvanian M1963A1 of the Coonan-Wikström Arms Corporation, both regularly accounted as being among the most effective and iconic military small arms ever produced.

The degree to which the venerable R60/ISW60, and their modernized iterations, the IR90/ISW90, were regarded conspired to ensure there would be significant initial resistance from the South/West Thaumantic military establishments to and for the development of the innovative, internationally hybridized R&D project that would become the Adaptive Service Rifle. The precise story, more accurately described as Pelagian Drama, of that development has been covered by MJI before and so will not be covered in further depth for this article - but it makes for interesting reading suffice it to say.

Since the benefits of adaptation of foreign engineering cues and innovation in both synthetic materials and chemical propellant were able to cow and silence the once numerous detractors, Thunder Swamp Arsenal's Adaptive Service Rifle (ASR) - once feared to be an overengineered and overpriced flight of fancy - has proven itself on a number of modern battlefields and in a variety of conditions. Initially adopted by the Army, Navy and Naval Marine Corps of the Confederated Republic of Beautancus, the ASR would go on to pass muster into service with the militaries of both the First Republic of Engellex and more recently the West Engell Republic.

At least a portion of the success enjoyed by the ASR stems from the basic platform having been designed around the proprietary .26 (6.6x48mm) "Hellion" intermediate rifle cartridge. Created to bridge the gap between higher velocity, higher armor penetrating lower calibers such as the .223, and much bulkier, physically heavier and heavier hitting rounds such as the venerable .308, the .26 Hellion allows for the base ASR platform to function in a wider variety of battlefield roles within the squad, without the need for changing barrels or receivers under fire, or worse, being forced to find an armorers bench.

So versatile is this baseline configuration of the platform that the Cussian Army now lists the ASR as serving the roles of basic infantry service rifle (further augmented by a wide variety of rail attachments and optics), crew rifle, accurized or sharpshooters rifle as well as filling the role of squad support weapon, which was until recently filled by the far heavier ISW90 and the heavier still Intermediate Support Machine Gun. The latter difference has been particularly telling, with the ASR being far less than half the weight of the ISMG, even fully loaded with 100 round beta-mags (coming in at only slightly above 4.7 kg vs. 11.3 kg for the ISMG) - allowing for individual soldiers and squads to carry more ammunition into the field, overall.

Combining this feature with markedly improved accuracy, vastly improved effective engagement range (600-700 meters) higher sustainable rates of fire (cyclic rate up to 900 rounds per minute), effective incapacitation or kill to shots fired ratios and it becomes even clearer why so many of the Thaumantic nations have opted to adopt this 21st century platform as their own, virtually ensuring Thunder Swamp Arsenal's continued dominance of the Far Western small arms market for the foreseeable future.
