Narður hit by 'apocalyptic' cyclone Flash floods on the Suinian holiday island of Narður have left 42 people dead after rivers broke their banks amid a cyclone that smashed cars and brought down bridges. The worst affected area was in and around the city of Denigr in the island's northeast - a ferry port and popular destination in the summer months. Pictures showed torrential rain, with streets submerged in muddy floodwaters and rivers bursting their banks. "We're at maximum alert," Karl Arnsvein, an official from the Civil Protection Authority in Narður told RAI radio station. "We haven't seen a situation as extreme as this, perhaps for decades. Especially because it's been across the whole island." Gritters were out on the major routes overnight. Snow in Jurgegot People in Jurgegot were among those greeted with snow on Tuesday morning No roads were closed, but Police warned drivers about the dangers of snow and ice, and the city had some school transport issues. Jurgegot International Airport reported delays to some flights. There were also been snowfalls over The Northern Isles, but no reports of disruption to travel. |
