Eleven Die in Army Operation in North Qirwan
Refugees Flee Region - Army Suffers Two Dead - Rebels Vow "Retaliation, Escalation"

AL RA'IS, West Qirwan Province. The Diwan of the Interior announced today that eleven had died in the latest stage of the operation against rebel forces in North Qirwan Province. Two soldiers are amongst those reported dead, while the remainder are rebels. Over forty people were wounded in the fighting.

The Royal Hajri Armed Forces have been involved in a protracted struggle with Islamist rebels on the island of Qirwan, in the North of the Sultanate of Hajr, since the 1970s. Several rebel groups have been waging a violent struggle against government authority, claiming they are politically, culturally, and economically oppressed by the State. Their aim is autonomy and independence for Qirwan. In the past, the Sultanate has accused Kediri and Wazistan of aiding the rebels.

Tens of thousands of refugees have fled the mountainous and jungle-covered North Qirwan Province, where the rebellion has been centered since the Royal Hajri Army drove the rebels out of the cities and lowlands of the southern half of the island in the nineties. Thousands more have followed them since the military began a counterterrorism campaign in the province in 2004.

The Interior Diwan spokesperson was quoted as saying that the current operation "is aimed at cleansing the area of rebel cells, finding weapons caches, and creating a safe corridor for civilians to exit the area" in the East of the Province.

The rebels, meanwhile, by word of one of their leaders and main spokesperson, `Abd ul-Fattah, have promised "swift retaliation" and have warned that the recent operations by the Armed Forces "will result in massive escalation", referring to the spate of bombings which has terrorized cities across Qirwan and the South of the Sultanate in recent years.

Sultan Slams Wazi "Slander" in Escalating Diplomatic Conflict
Deplores Wazi Accusations as "Destabilizing" and "Un-Islamic" - Accuses Islamic Republic of "Crimes Against Arabs"

AL A'RAF, Capital of the Realm. In a rapidly escalating diplomatic confrontation between the Islamic Republic of Wazistan and the Sultanate, His Majesty the Sultan himself has ventured out into the debate in a rare attack on another nation's government.

In an interview with a foreign news agency, the President of Wazistan, Hamid Najibullah, lashed out at Hajr, accusing the nation of "funding terrorism and separatism" in at least three different countries in the region and calling on the international community to confront the "Al A'raf regime". The President, who is usually seen as a moderate, furthermore accused the Sultanate of "imperialism" and not following the "principles of the Prophet".

Responding in a rare public television broadcast, the Father of the Nation said he felt "compelled to give a proper response to such serious accusations". His Majesty further stated that he feels that the aggressive rhetoric emanating from Ijad is "the natural result of unrestrained demagogy . . . it is saddening that such pandering to the masses can destabilize the region so".

The Sultan, who is called al-Mustansir, "the Victorious", called Najibullah's comments "un-Islamic" and accused the Ijad regime of "destabilizing the region with its unchecked rhetoric". He flatly denied any involvement of Hajr or its citizens in "any kind of insurgeny activity whatsoever, in the entire world".

Indeed, His Majesty went on to accuse the Persian-dominated Wazi government of funding violence and terrorism itself, citing "reliable information extracted by our intelligence" linking Wazi military figures and influential citizens to the Qirwani rebellion, as wel as several acts of terrorism throughout the region.

Moreover, Sultan Huseyn berated the Persian-dominated Islamic Republic for its "consistent oppression . . . of the Arab people in Wazistan, against whom they commit many crimes". He assured the Arab population of Wazistan that "Hajr will ever stand by its Arab brothers in the struggle".

He contrasted Wazistan's track record under its theocratic regime with the "peace and prosperity on Hajr's borders" in the modern era, saying he "lamented . . . the end of monarchy in Wazistan".

He categorically refused any overtures Najibullah may have made, saying, "The Sultanate has no need to talk with those who only seek the confrontation . . . we have nothing to discuss."

It is His Royal Highness' sincere hope and that of his government that some sort of peaceful dialogue to can be entered into so as to settle the differences between Hajr and Wazistan instead of the continued rhetoric that does nothing but add fuel to the fire.

We hope that both sides will refrain from making statements that will hurt the region even further. However we do want to make it clear that should the situation escalate our Wazistani friends will have full support of the Kingdom of Ratomkira.

Hajr to Hold Major New Defense Exhibition
At Least Five Major Contracts to Be Up for Grabs - Invitation Extended to "All Major International Contractors"

AL A'RAF, Capital of the Realm. Speaking in his capacity as Minister of War before the Council of State, Sultan Huseyn of Hajr today announced his intention to "initiate the next step" in the continuing modernization of the Royal Hajri Armed Forces, which was begun under his father Sultan Saad, by hosting a major defense and security exhibition in Hajr.

The event, to be named the International Military Exhibition & Conference (IMEX), is to be held at the beginning of February. His Majesty declared that the new exhibition would be henceforth held twice a year under his patronage, and that "all major international defense contractors have been invited".

Sources within the Diwan of War tell Al Watan that the goal of IMEX is to evaluate different weapons systems from different countries, so that the Sultanate can make a well-informed choice for procurement. At least five major contracts, ranging from new tanks and airplanes to anti-tank weaponry, are reportedly on offer at the exhibition.

His Majesty, moreover, expressed his hope "that IMEX may, in the future, be a major venue for the defense industry to showcase its products and for deals to be negotiated." He has also declared that the exhibition will help domestic Hajri industry develop further.

Hajr has been in the process of modernizing its military since the eighties, when under Sultan Saad the Sultanate began to diversify its arms supplies, which until then had largely come from Oikawa. The process was intensified after Sultan Huseyn took the throne in 1991, to the occasional chagrin of regional rival Wazistan.
