Speech at Arretium​ Today the Emperor Martinus gave a speech, outlining the plans he has for the Empire, and the reason for his ascension to the throne. "My fellow Arretine citizens, I am gladdened to stand here before you, as your emperor and as your trusted friend. I have heard the concerns over my claim to the throne and I assure you, that while they may not follow the strict and antiquated laws that we are all accustomed to there is more than valid reasons for my actions. The Empire, if you could call it that before I was crowned, was nothing but a petty conglomerate of kingdoms and duchies that squabbled over the most inconsequential things. The Empress was unable to handle this mess, and it was my duty, as an Arretine citizen, to ensure that the Empire became strong and powerful once again. The passing of the other five lords was regrettable, but necessary to save our nation, our people, from floundering in the dark. This change in power does not show a trend towards failure my friends, but no it is a step towards the uplifting of our entire civilization. One of my greatest concerns upon being crowned were the people of Austellus, who had been so brutally oppressed over the years. I wish to tell you all now that I thank you for all the hard work you have done, and that had yet to come. It is with this I declare that all citizens of Austellus be made into Arretine citizens, in reward for their many years of faithful work. Together we can make a new tomorrow, one that will see the glory of the Arretine Empire become the envy of all. I look to the rest of the world and see the chaos and destruction so prevalent in it. It is my greatest desire to see the unification of many of the ancient Tiburan Empire's old subjects join with Arretium in the pursuit of a more perfect world. It is with shame that I look upon the decayed state that calls itself the "Tiburan Empire" using that most ancient and respected name to justify its existence. Only Arretium may claim to be the true successor to the great Tiburan Empire, as we have preserved the traditions and peoples that once made it so great, as shall we become in due time. No great empire is without a great army, and it is my greatest honor to declare an expansion of the Imperial Armed Forces. This expansion shall light up the forges, train our young men and women, and propel the economy fowars as we produce everything necessary for this great and bountiful Empire to prosper in such a hostile world. Join me citizens for a new Empire, a great Empire!

Emperor Gives Speech​

Long Sea Piracy/Ionian Islands​ The Imperial Navy today released a statement noting increased attack on Arretine shipping vessels in the Long Sea. In the past 2 weeks there have been four separate incidents involving the threatening of an Arretine trade ship. Most of these were solved when an Arretine Navy warship was able to respond. However, the last such attack ended in a brief hostile takeover of the trade ship, which was broken by Arretine Marines. In a statement today, Admiral Cloalius Ovidius told reporters that the Arretine Navy would deploy additional ships into the Long Sea in order to "meet the demands of countering the pirate threat". In seperate news, the government has also announced that they have received a disparaging letter from the most northwest Ionian island of, which in Arretium is called, Naxium. Naxium is home to many Ionians who share very common ancestry with their counterparts closeby in Arretium. Officials state the citizens of Naxium are requesting that the Empire intercede on their behalf to stop Ionian civil rights violations. The Foreign Minister said in an interview that they were "closely monitoring the situation" and "would approach the Ionians if appropriate".

We condemn your attempt at claiming the island of Naxos, an island with an entirely Ionian population and ancestry long before you "Empire" even existed, as your own. We also condemn your attempt to claim that the Ionian Confederacy has somehow violated human rights. There has been no such announcement by the residents of the island, this piece of "news" is a fabrication made by the warmongers of the Arrentine Government. The Ionian Military stands fully ready to defend our sovereign soil along with our allies in the Long Sea Mutual Defence Treaty, the Kingdom of [MENTION=18]Eiffelland[/MENTION] and the Grand Duchy of [MENTION=414]Nichtstein[/MENTION] . We request, nay demand, that you withdraw your scandalous statements and apologize to the population of Naxos for somehow claiming them as Arrentine, an insult to their proud and pure Ionian ancestry and national identity. They fought you off once, back when you had actual power, and they will do it again if needed. We question the ability of a nation that cannot even defend its waters from pirates in the 20th century AD to somehow lay claim to that whcih rightfully belongs to another nation. We have also been taking pirate attacks and have been successfully fighting them off for thousands of years. Additionally we advise your excellencies to look at a map and see that Naxos is on the other side of the long sea, near Eiffelland. Lesbos is the island nearest to your "Empire" and it sure isn't Arrentine. We also condemn your military expansion and the desire of a man who doesn't know basic geography to be called "Emperor".

The Empire is shocked by the insinuation that Arretium has laid claim to the island, traditionally called Naxium in the Arretine Empire, and Lesbos as it is known in Ionia. In no point during in of our press statements did we ever say that Naxium is in fact part of the Arretine Empire. We simply stated that a letter was received, and that our government would cordially approach the Ionian government over this issue. Instead the Ionian government has mobilized its armies for war, posted warships near the island. Already now they are performing military drills that seek to entice Arretium into action. The Arretine military has not mobilized, but if the Ionians continue what must be clearly seen as an aggressive and disastrous posture towards the Empire, it will defend itself, with force if necessary. The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein expresses her total concern at the unfolding situation between the somewhat overly eagerly aggressive Arrentine Empire and the somewhat eagerly overactive Ionia. We call on all parties to cool down their level of hostile rhetoric.

The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein also states that the Grand Ducal Navy, in its monitoring operations throughout the Long Sea, has so far not yet seen any evidence of any attacks of Arrentine trade ships being performed by any hostile powers within the general area of the sea stretching from Auraria to Eiffelland, an area monitored by the Grand Ducal navy extensively. It is an established fact that the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein stands for the inviolability of such a principle as the opening of the high seas to all civilian and merchant shipping and has historically condemned and moves against in action against any acts aimed at disrupting the free flow of trade throughout the seas. This is why we are monitoring closely the seas adjascent to us.

The Grand Ducal Navy also does not have any evidence as to any hostile action performed by the Ionian Navy against the Arrentine Navy. However, as the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein is not an all-seeing eye of a deity long forgotten and may not claim to have universal knowledge of all acts past, present and future committed throughout the world, we call upon the Arrentine Empire to come forth with credible evidence, aside from populist media statements, as to the veracity of the facts purportedly claimed before.

In the meantime, we call upon our friends in Ionia to be more reasonable in their outbursts over ancestry. If Nichtstein has managed to get over the fact that nobody understands the difference between Retalians and Bourbiners and continues to stubbornly refer to us as "that sorta kinda Eiffellander people", then surely Ionia can do just as well.

We never fired upon any vessel flying an Arrentine flag to this day and will not do so anytime soon. You also failed to mention that a full battle group of Battle Cruisers form your nation breached our Exclusive Economic Zone. It was intercepted by three full Ionian Naval Battle Groups after not evacuating our EEZ. Our ships fired exactly three (3) warning shots, coming from the Dreadnought ΠΝ Averof, the 1st Fleet's Flagship. None of them hit any of your vessels. We did not sink any of your ships.

We have 6 different film tapes proving it. You have no proof. Additionally we ask you this: If we were to shoot at your ships why did we only shoot a tug boat? Why did your warships not react? And why do the videos of our Navy and independent news agencies show no ship being fired at? Because no such thing happened. You just destroyed a tug boat to try to victimize yourselves even though you were breaching our EEZ. You couldn't even bother to properly perform this false flag operation of yours and thought that a tug boat not even a warship, would be enough. Additionally we have no record of increased piracy rates near your shores.

And now your hypocrisy and warmongering has been exposed to the entire world. Once again we invite you to join us at the Aurarian Capital City to settle this without the need for arms. If you reject again then know that this entire incident is solely result of your actions and false hopes to revive an empire whcih was never yours.

I have to mention that our Navy closely monitors the part of the Long Sea northwest to southeast of Eiffelland, together with the Navies of Nichtstein and Ionia. We manage to keep pirates out of the seas we monitor, at least to a very high extent. We share the concerns about piracy voiced by the governments of Auraria and Arretium, but we reassure you that we don't need any assistance from the Aurarine or Arretine Navy in keeping the parts of the Long Sea bordering our EEZs clean from pirates. Even merchant vessels of Auraria and Arretium will be safe under our monitoring.

We also have to say that we consider claims about human rights violations in Ionia extremely strange. We wonder where they come from, and we can't imagine that they are true. In any case, the internal integrity of Ionia will be our concern as well.

Regarding the sunk tugboat, we don't know how it sank, but we are 100% sure that it did not sink because of Ionian fire. We reject any claims by the Arretine Empire that the tugboat in question was sunk by the Ionian Navy. Nevertheless, our condolences to the family and friends of the people who died during that incident.

In The Eyes of the Awakened Gods and Men,

Let it be known that the Golden Porte demands the immediate cessation of hostilities of any kind in the naval bodies of the Long Sea. The Celestial Realm once more can find nothing but sad reassurance about the lust for strife that exists in the Lands of the Sun, a reassurance the Eternal One would rather not have been given. The Long Sea is too vital, too integral to the interests of the East to leave it to the petty struggles between the Lords of the West. The Golden Porte is committed to fair exchange of goods with those Lords of the West that have the coin to trade for them, but such exchanges can only flourish as long as arms remain silent. The Celestial Realm does not have to remind the Lords of the West about the historical consequences of guns parading in the Long Sea, with the West having before felt the consequences of a Long Sea inaccessible to its traders, merchants and explorers. It would be most inappropriate to repeat history, in the interest of all sentient beings.

The Golden Porte expects this issue to be resolved within the next days, or it will take appropriate steps to guarantee that the Long Sea will remain open to Imperial commerce. Hostilities in the Long Sea are not an option, not today, nor in the future.
