Herald of the Union

While this Jackson Polk regime is garnering great support amongst victorious Blue Union patriots nationwide, we will not break our sacred vow of virtue to the free market, by interfering with our prudent banking community and their right to invest or support in whatever financial facet choose.

Stabilization of the Confederacy, and promotion of those essential Civil Liberties is something we can do. The Union has always supported legitimate democratic causes that aim to preserve and spread liberty, freedom, and justice. We shall look to encourage Blue Flag Corporations to export, and to Confederate Companies to import. Specifically, Union Liquor Stores would greatly benefit from a steady flow of Whiskey & Moonshine, if such business deals can be arranged.

Confederate Council claims “Constitution near completion.”

The Confederate Council has announced today that the Constitution of the Confederate States is near completion. The constitution is majorly based on the constitution the country had before Featherston’s inauguration. The constitution’s most controversial section is the fact that it did not grant states the right to secede. Instead, it grants states, by a two-third majority, the power to void the Federal Government and continue to keep it voided until the Federal Government begins to work on the side of the people again.

The Constitution states that the Government, on Federal, State, and Local Levels will not pass any legislation that discriminates against an individual based on race, nationality, gender, political opinion, or sexual orientation. The Constitution will have universal suffrage, putting the voting age at eighteen.

The Confederate Council sees no reason as to why the Constitution won’t be finished on the 20th. President Polk said that the Constitution will be spread across the states for ratification, rather than the Federal Government itself.

2010 Budget under work.

The Confederate Council, along with working on the Constitution, would like to see the 2010 budget passed before 2010 comes. The new budget, by request of the President, will cut spending significantly, especially in the military and welfare. Healthcare will slowly be turned to the private sector, for President Polk believes the private sector will handle it much more efficiently. The Budget is to include extensive military spending cuts, because a large military is not necessary at the moment.

The President said that with the giant amount of saved money, he plans to make the largest slash in taxes in Confederate History. These tax decreases will provide the Confederate People with a larger amount of money, which will help our new consumer-based economy.

Federal Budget 2010 released and approved.

President Polk called it “a capitalist triumph.” The new Federal Budget for 2010 cut government spending by 14%, the largest cut in Confederate History. Half of the Government’s spending will be going to Education and Welfare. President Polk commented on bringing welfare down the essentials for survival, in order to help the system not be abused. The new budget is 524.99 Billion CS Dollars, as compared to the 611 Billion of Sanford’s. the military saw one of the most significant cuts, as a good deal of money was turned from the military to the new research fund of the Government.

Here is a list of how much money is being spent on certain things, in order from greatest to least:
1. Education – C$131.13 Billion
2. Welfare – C$131.12 Billion
3. Military –C$ 78.82 Billion
4. Research – C$63.06 Billion
5. Infrastructure – C$52.55 Billion
6. Transportation – C$26.27 Billion
7. Debt Repayment – C$26.27 Billion
8. Other – C$15.76 Billion
Here is the official graph released by the Confederate Council on the budget

Corporate Taxes slashed, many regulations lifted

Today, the Confederate Council announced they wanted to take a burden off the Private Sector and lower their taxes in order to allow them to begin expanding. The Council did just this, and cut Corporate Taxes significantly. Three businesses, Belden’s, Microtech, and Birdwell Motors, have all announced their plan to step up production and need for workers.

The three companies are having no problem finding new eager workers due to the massive layoff only a little earlier. Many other companies are shaking the tax burden as well, and have announced they are planning to either hire new workers or increase on the benefits they provide their own workers. President Polk also said that the Oil Industry, which had been nationally owned for over 50 years, will be again privatized and divided into four separate companies.

The Government has agreed to sell some of the nation’s railways to private industries that require or want them. President Polk is assuring the nation that the Confederate States are moving in the right direction for a greater life.

Presidential Inauguration Date set to Christmas Day

On December 25, 2009, President Polk will officially be inaugurated as the country’s President in the new permanent Government. This inauguration will occur at 1 o’clock, so that it gives the President some time to spend with his family on Christmas Day. The constitution is to be put into effect on that date, and government members will be inaugurated. The reason December 25th was chosen was because Polk wanted to deliver, as he put it, “a gift from the government, to the people on Christmas Day.”

Blue Flag Corporation

Private institutions claiming their rightful stake in this Confederate economy is highly encouraged by Union Corporations, to include the Blue Flag Corporation, who acts as an interest group to support the rights of the private sector. The Confederate States should hereby be placed on a "Blue Status", thus encouraging investment and activity from Životinje's vast near unregulated market.

Note also that the Blue Flag Corporation commends the Polk administration for prioritizing education as high or higher as defense, a rarity in the heavy handed nations of Europe. However, this notion of welfare should be highly discouraged in the spirit of a growing free market system in the Confederacy, we promise you that this money could be better spent in many other places.

Constitution sent to the States

Today, the Confederate Council finished the constitution and sent it to the thirteen states. The Council wanted the constitution to be passed by a vast majority, so eleven out of the thirteen states must pass the constitution before the document can become the official plan of Government. Only two hours after the Constitution was released, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Georgia passed it with over 90% of the vote. Other states, including Tennessee and Alabama are currently voting on the constitution.

The new constitution mimics the previous. The new system of checks and balances is promised to make sure power does not centralize in the Executive Branch ever again. The constitution also includes a bill of rights that lay out the basic rights of every citizen of the Confederate States. One new thing in the constitution is that it provides an article specific to discrimination. The constitution has provided the rights for Homosexuals, including the right to marriage. The constitution establishes that English and French are the official languages of the CS, and Spanish is a recognized language.

President Polk calls it a massive leap forward to a new nation that he envisions. One that supports the rights of all human beings, respects the right to life, and is a capitalistic nation. President Polk said he’s very anxious for the states to make their decision and hopes that the magic eleven is met soon so he can sign the document that will bring liberty back to the people.

General Horatio Stellers reports “Fascists in Tennessee defeated”

Only moments after the constitution was released, General Stellers held a press conference and claimed the fighting in Tennessee has ceased and that the state is officially under CS Governance. However, fighting in Alabama has intensified and the General requested new hardware to fight the fascist rebels in Alabama.

General Stellers claimed that over 90% of the CS’ military equipment has been accounted for and that the fascist rebels do not possess any serious arms, unless supplied by a foreign body. Stellers claimed the CS will end the fighting by the end of January 2010.

Stellers continued to say he was concerned over the CS’ defenses. Stellers pleaded with the Government to work on national security once the government is put in place. Polk replied saying that national security was one of the biggest things on his mental list of things to do.

Major Snow storm rocks Northwest.

Last night, snow fell over the Northwestern States. Though this storm was predicted to be bad, no one knew the severity of the storm. Texas, Florida, and Kentucky were hit the hardest by this storm. The storm made records for the largest snow fall in CS history. The most heavily affected areas experienced 21 inches of snow.

Optimism for the New Year

2010 came into a very optimistic country. Polls show that most people are very happy with how Richmond is running the country. President Polk said he is very pleased with how the country is running and will begin to reestablish the Confederate States on a global scale. The President stated relations with Anglia and Belmont are ideal. President Polk wants to expand the Confederate States’ friendly nations list, starting with Austurland and the American Union.

The President also wishes to begin talks with AGE, not about membership, but about trade deals. However, among the President’s Agenda, his top priority is to end the fighting in Alabama. The President claimed that estimates show the damage done in Alabama to be cost around 500 million CS Dollars to repair, excluding the costs of mobilizing the military. The President claimed the cost was something the CS, at the moment, was not prepared to bear for too long.

Economically, large companies are not hiring. Microtech, one of the CS’ largest companies, stated earlier today that by mid-January they will be hiring nearly 50,000 men, which is the largest opportunity for employment currently out there. They claimed that the jobs will mainly be in manufacturing. Microtech hopes that they can fill the positions and help to grow the economy as best they can. Other companies have stated they intend to bring in more jobs, but none have announced a number or date.

Meribian New Year’s Celebration disturbs the CS population

Part of Meribia’s New Year’s Celebration included the detonation of a one megaton nuclear warhead. Marshall of the Soviet Republic Nikolai Vorobev was asked why he would choose to detonate a nuclear warhead, he responded “why not.”

Many Confederates took that as a complete disregard for the power of a nuclear weapon. The CNDN called it a “disturbing event.” Many people along the border claimed they were always uncomfortable with the Communist State so close to their home. The CNDN did call for Meribia to show more restraint on their nuclear tests and not testing them for such reasons as “why not.” Some Confederates are even more concerned over the event because the CS does not possess nuclear warheads.

Congress makes the CNDN the Department of Defense

Today, Congress decided to change the CNDN into the Confederate Department of Defense. Head of the CNDN, one Robert Shay, has been sworn in as the country’s Secretary of Defense. The DoD adopted a new symbol, which is said to become the symbol of the Confederate Armed Forces. Defense Secretary Shay stated that the Fascists had a large number of protocols for defense of the country that the new DoD will adopt.

The Department of Defense confirmed that the Confederate Armed Forces’ manpower is approximately 123,000, 81 ships, 106 including auxiliary ships, and 1,030 aircraft. Officials confirmed the repairs on the Russell will be complete soon and the ship will sail the seas once again on January 10. Secretary Shay said the Department is now working on taking full control of Confederate Defenses.

Secretary Shay was asked about the recent detonation of a nuclear warhead in Meribia and the promise of another. Shay responded saying “Although it concerns us, I do not feel we are in any immediate danger. We will be watching the situation closely and react accordingly.” Shay was then asked on General Horatio Stellers’ recent assault on Kennesaw, Alabama, to where Shay confirmed the decision was approved by the highest of ranks and the move may be enough of a punch to throw the Fascists into dismay.

FRP unity slipping

[FONT="Georgia]The FRP, the party who thwarted the Fascists, is beginning to fall apart as different ideologies within the party are beginning to show. A significant number of Senators do not believe in the same economic policy the President is trying to push through, but others are defending the President’s policy. Threats of leaving the party to join another have emerged, but no significant action on the matter has been done. The President has said that if the Government becomes too concerned with how to label themselves, actual governing may cease and no progress at all will be made.

The President said that the need of the FRP may be finished and that separate political parties should form. The President himself officially dropped membership in the FRP and declared himself an Independent, refuses to align himself to any party and doing solely what he feels best for the country. This has shocked some members of Congress.

Today, January 10, 2010, President Jackson Polk has called a joint secession of Congress to address not only Congress but the entire nation. We bring this speech to you live.

“Good Afternoon Senators, Representatives, and Citizens of the States. Today I bring good and bad news. The Battle of Kennesaw has finished, however the Terrorists delivered a very painful blow. The entire city was rigged with explosives and gasoline that when lit, set the entire city ablaze. We have estimates of over 1,100 people killed in the attack. However, George Sanford has been apprehended and is currently locked in Berks Air Field. With the leader of the terrorists in our hands, the leadership of the terrorists has been shattered, not to mention the loss of one of their base of operations. Today, we delivered a blow to the Terrorists that may have very well defeated them. It came at a heavy price, but it was a price that was absolutely necessary to pay. Our soldiers’ sacrifice guaranteed for us the continuation of our well being. We will never forget the events that have occurred on this day.

Without centralized leadership, the terrorists will be rounded up and defeated so that peace may again return to the Confederate States. The efforts of the people over at the Department of Defense have finally paid off, as the DoD has confirmed to me that we are now fully capable of defending our borders and ports. The CSS Russell has returned to sea after an attack by an unknown nation put her in serious damage. We are still hunting down the one responsible for the attack and we will bring them to justice.

I have set a new goal for this country. We need to reestablish our position in the world. Before, we were known to the world as a Fascist Nation, drowning in lies to keep the population at bay. Now, we will be known to the world as a Nation that holds the ideals of freedom, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness, looking solely for peace and mutual benefit in economic prosperity. To do this, we need to have an international image. We need the world to know that this Government is indeed in full control of this country and that the Confederate States is again a stable nation.

I am very pleased to see what is coming out of our private sector. The promise of jobs is something that makes me very happy to hear. As of today, I want to ask Congress to privatize the oil industry, so that Capitalism in this country can make oil cheaper, more available, produce jobs, and bring more wealth into the country, something the Government has been unable to do for seventy-two years. Economic Reports from the Department of Commerce put our GDP at $C4.082 Trillion and our GDP per capita at C$45,000. These are numbers I am very pleased with. It is my hope to see these numbers improve over the next few years.

I am in the process of cutting unnecessary social welfare. Government is an institution to keep security for the people, not to provide a living for the people. I will to the best of my abilities defend the constitution, but I will not give handouts to corporations or businesses. However, a move has been approved by me and Congress to give compensation the victims and families that were affected by the Fascists’ concentration camps. I believe that is the least this new administration can do.

To close my address, I want to give a few addresses to certain nations, first, to our neighbor, Meribia. I ask you to please show more restraint for your nuclear weapons testing. I would also like to see Meribia cut its nuclear weapons stocks, for the more weapons that exist on the continent, the more tension between nations exist. I do not want to close Richmond off from the Meribian Nation; I want our two nations to cooperate on a better level, something that will be beneficial for us both. Our histories have been nothing but continuous conflict. I, as President of the Confederate States, would like to see that change. My second address is to Belmont and Anglia. I want to thank both your nations for backing us in this time, a time when we were under great stress. I greatly appreciate the level of dedication that Belmont and Anglia have shown in us, and I want to promise those nations that the Confederate States will forever be an ally and we are fully committed to protecting our allies, no matter the cost.

Thank you, and good night.”

Soviet Republic Ministry of International Relations

The Soviet Republic of Meribia is pleased with Richmond's friendly overture. We would like to assure our neighbors in the Confederate States that no more nuclear tests are planned for the foreseeable future and that plans have been made to disarm a number of older warheads presently in use by the Soviet Meribian Strategic Arms Command.

Whatever tensions may exist between Meribia and it's neighbors, the Soviet Republic will never strike the first blow.

Acting-President Stellers approves temporary suspension of the 2010 Budget and issues a new one.

Acting-President Stellers, today, claimed that the 2010 Budget did not successfully address certain areas with the appropriate funding to restore control over the country, primarily defense and law enforcement. Stellers said that for the military to successfully maintain control over the country, it will need at the very least, CS$150 Billion. Congress reluctantly agreed with the Acting-President and agreed to his proposed budget, which jumped military spending from 15% to 29% of the budget, nearly doubling.

The Acting-President said “I am the Commanding General of the Confederate States. I know what the military needs to reestablish stability; I’d like to give them what they need.” Some more conservative members of Congress believe the budget should be made permanent, when looking at the situation across the border with Meribia and Coronado, it may be necessary to maintain a strong defensive military.

When the President was asked about making the budget permanent, he said it was not his decision, it was the decision of Congress and President Polk upon his return. Acting-President Stellers did, however, suggest having an emergency fund set aside, not to be touched unless an emergency came to the Confederate States and the Government needed extra money quickly. The idea received good return from Congress. The President also promised that he wouldn’t increase a cent in spending, and he took the money from the Welfare and Education Budgets which he claimed were “grossly over budgeted.”

DoD places more troops along the borders, to prevent illegal leaving of the country.

The Department of Defense has increased troop border patrols rather significantly to prevent illegal departing of the Confederate States. The DoD has concerns that Terrorists may be slipping across the border in order to operate outside the jurisdiction of the Confederate States. The DoD was asked about how they would handle illegal entry from Meribia, for whatever reason. It is no secret that Richmond has been very lenient on illegal immigrants from Meribia. The Department of Defense replied stating that that decision was not to be made by them, but rather by Richmond and as of current Richmond has issued no order relating to the subject.

The Department of Defense has stated that the reason increase in budget will allow the military to operate much more efficiently and will be much more capable of defending the border. The Department of Defense also stated that they plan to use the money to help modernize the CS Military. Better equipment is a key priority in their agenda. The DoD stated that in comparison to neighboring countries, the Confederate States is very limited militarily.

The Department of Defense said that after recent events, the need for a stronger military is painfully obvious and the DoD promises to deliver on a safer Confederate States.

PRESIDENT POLK MURDERED

Today, the Department of Homeland Security received a video of terrorist leader, Yashur, shooting what was later confirmed to be President Jackson Polk, killing him. The DHS said that they were absolutely certain that the man who was shot was indeed Polk. In the video, Yashur declared that he apologized for not making any noise, but hopes that his next action will stir some stomachs, at that statement, he proceeded to aim a pistol at the President’s head and pulled the trigger.

Acting-President Stellers requested that the video not be released to the public due to its cruelty and that a moment of silence be held across the nation to honor Jackson Polk. Polk was confirmed to be dead at 12:54 AM, January 31, 2010. Many Congressmen and other Government Members were friends of President Polk and are shaken by the recent events. Due to the developments, Congress has declared that Horatio Stellers is now the 24th President of the Confederate States. Now, President Stellers has accepted his position and has resigned his position of Commanding General of the Armed Forces. However, President Stellers stated that in the spirit of the young Democracy, and in the memory of President Jackson Polk, a special election for President will be held on February 5, 2010. The winner of the special election will be inaugurated on February 10, 2010, Jackson Polk’s birthday.

President Stellers also declared today to be a day of mourning for the death of President Polk. He himself will be spending the day with Polk’s family, people he was also close friends with. President Stellers issued a small statement in response to the event, where his final words were that Yashur will be brought down and that he would be killed.
----
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Foreign Office of Belmont,

Due to the recent events and our efforts to end the chaos in this country, I would like to graciously accept the assistance offered by our allies. I want to see this conflict ended so that our young democracy is put into a safe environment to become powerful and stable. We would like to request that regular Belmontien Forces be ready for deployment along several locations along the Confederate-Meribian Border. However, Belmontien Special Forces are requested to link up with Task Force Delta, which has been tasked with the apprehension of Yashur.

We wish for a response as soon as possible, and again we thank our allies for helping us in our time of need.

With Thanks,
President Horatio Stellers

Special Election heats up as two more people enter

Horatio Stellers is running on the FRP’s ticket for the Presidency, but now two new political parties have come out of the FRP, the Conservative Party and the United People’s Party. The Free Republican Party identified themselves as being Libertarian, this was not accepted by some members of the party and thus they broke off. The Conservative Party represents similar economic policies as the Free Republicans, but social policies are different. Both parties have different ideas on how the country should go about the transition. The Conservative Party nominated Ronald Fillmore.

The United People’s Party(UPP) identify themselves as a Socialist Party. Party chairman, and Socialist Presidential Candidate, Nathan Pearson, stated that the Fascists in some ways had the ideals that a modern nation should follow. “Capitalism is a disease that will continue to ignite class warfare for decades.”

All three candidates are scheduled to meet in Houston, Texas for a debate. It will be the only debate before the special election. Polls show that Stellers is in the lead by a rather large margin. Vice-Presidential Candidates have yet to be selected, but Congress has urged all three men to make their choices quickly.

DoD puts through plan to modernize the Armed Forces

[FONT="Georgia]Secretary Robert Shay of the Department of Defense has submitted an extensive plan to modernize the Confederate Armed Forces so that it can better meet the challenges it faces today. The SCAR program that was started several years ago and put on hold has been restarted and the DoD expects the weapons to be ready by March. The DoD has already put an order for over 10,000 SCAR-Ls.

Secretary Shay also stated he wants a more capable air force, and two new ships to be added to the navy. Although no details have been released on what exactly he wants to do to the air force or what two ships he plans to add, Congress is pleased that the DoD is acting on the money they were given. Secretary Shay also stated that it is time for the Confederate States to gain possession of UAVs.

His Majesty William I commends the Confederate State's plans to modernize their armed forces. This comes at a time when international conflict is on the rise, and more protection is necessary for a nation's people. Anglian ship production companies are currently wishing to continue the contracts that had formally been in place with former governments to build and re-fit the Navy of the CS.

It has been a long standing tradition for Anglian companies to manufacture top of the line vessels for the Confederate State's Navy. We wish to extend a hand in friendship to the people of the Confederacy and their rightful wish for a proper democracy.

Horatio Stellers wins election

Election results are in and it shows that Horatio Stellers won the Presidential Election with nearly 65% of the vote. Ronald Fillmore came in second with 30% of the vote and Nathan Pearson came in last with 5% of the vote. Both Fillmore and Pearson called and congratulated Stellers on his victory. President Stellers plans to give a speech tomorrow addressing his election and the announcement of his “Real Deal” program for domestic policy.

It is said 34 million people voted in the election. Around 23,120,000 people voted for Stellers, 11,900,000 people voted for Fillmore and 1,700,000 people voted for Pearson. The vote brought in one of the highest number of results in the nation’s history. Stellers won by one of the largest majorities as well, he succeeded in wining eleven out of thirteen states.

Congress declared that Horatio Stellers would take all the powers and responsibilities of the Presidency at the moment he was confirmed the winner, despite the fact he did not take the oath of office. Congress is now divided, with political parties. The Senate, which has 23 members, is now made up of 11 Free Republicans, 9 Conservatives, and 3 socialists. The House of Representatives, which has 174 members, is made up of 98 Free Republicans, 50 Conservatives, and 26 socialists. In the House, a one vote majority is needed to pass a bill, but in the Senate, a 60% majority is needed. The Free Republicans do not have a supermajority in the Senate, which could lead to legislative deadlock for the Free Republicans if they are unwilling to compromise. President Stellers said he is happy to work with other parties, for that is what Government is.

The election caused celebration across the country as many people are confident in President Stellers’ ability to govern the country. We from the Confederate Chronicle, congratulate President Stellers, the 24th President of the Confederate States.
