We appreciate the fact that the Prince-Bishop of Gouw Marken, whom we respect to a high extent, wants to take up a mediating role in this conflict. Unfortunately, we cannot agree with theproposed solution. The centre of the problem is the fact that the three journalists are standing trial for a crime they did not commit and they were not arrested for. The official reason may be espionage, but the real reason is the fact that they published something the Government of Serenierre did not like. We are not talking about criminal offences, but about human rights violations. The only acceptable solution to this crisis will be the acquittal and unconditional release of the three Pelasgian journalists.

Rathenau Militärausrüstung introduces air defence missile; armed forces place big order

During a press conference in Hotel Radlohne, the most expensive hotel in Trier, Rathenau Militärausrüstung introduced its newest missile: The Luftabwehrrakete 1 (LAR-1). This is a ground-based missile that is used for the defence against incoming hostile planes. The guidance is semi-automatic. The CEO of Rathenau Militärausrüstung showed in a slide show how the system works: An early warning system (in the slide a Warnstern plane) detects the plane and informs the missile base that there is an incoming aircraft, with the coordinates of the plane. As soon as the missile base detects the plane on its own radar, it takes over the plane tracking. Then the missile is fired, and and it guids itself to its target based on the radar it collects itself and the radar it receives from the ground station.
Additional to the news about the new missile, the CEO of Rathenau Militärausrüstung indicated that the computer experts of Nichsdorf (also a company from the Rathenau Gruppe) concider the design of the computer managing the LAR-1 an extremely good design for a computer controlling industrial processes, for instance in the chemical industry, and that Nichsdorf is indeed working on a process controlling computer for the industry. It is expected that Nichsdorf will present such a computer to the market in the beginning of 1959.
One other glimpse at the future was allowed as well: Rathenau Militärausrüstung is currently working on a missile for bombings on the ground. This missile will also be developed as an anti-ship missile.
It appears that the Eiffellandian armed forces already placed large orders for the LAR-1. At this moment, the LAR-1 will only be available for Eiffelland and its allies.

We condemn the highly provocative actions of the Eiffellander state and defence industry establishment. The state of regional tensions requires tact and reporting such as this shows only the hostile and aggressive intentions of Eiffelland against the People's Republic. We condemn the nation-state of Eiffelland for its needlessly provocative actions.

The funny thing is, that the country protesting the loudest about these new missiles is exactly the most belligerent country in Eiffelland's neighbourhood, and with that one of the main reasons why continuous development of military equipment is needed. Serenierre is the last country in the world that can teach us anything about tact, especially because exactly the impulsive, brutal and agressive language coming from Villesen is the reason why the tensions are so high.

"While we urge all parties involved in this conflict to remain calm, we do agree with our Serenierrese friends that the timing of Eiffelland's military announcements is unfortunate to say the least. With casualties rising in Borovanger and ancient disputes resurfacing we believe it is best for all nations involved to refrain from such publications at the time being."

Nova Srbja crisis ends peacefully
Eiffelland demobilises

In response to the agreement between Bourgogne and Kadikistan to not intervene in Nova Srbja, the government announced that the armed forces will be demobilised. Effective immediately, the Army will go from Alarmstufe 3 to Alarmstufe 0, and the Navy and Air Force will go from Alarmstufe 3 to Alarmstufe 1. The alarmlevels were raised last week after Kadikistan announced to mobilise and threatened to attack the Free States when Bourgogne would continue to uphold a no-fly-zone above Nova Srbja. Meanwhile, peace talks have started between the major factions in Nova Srbja, for the first time in ten years.

Nichsdorf introduces photocopy machine for office use

Xerography, electrophotography and photocopy are three terms which refer to the same procedure to produce copies of paper documents. The procedure itself is quite complex to describe, but the revolutionary thing is that it is a dry copying procedure, in contrast with for instance stencilling, or making blueprints. Nichsdorf introduced photocopying devices in 1936, but these devices were only suitable for printing companies, not for office use. TOday Nichsdorf announced that it will introduce a photocopier that is suitable for office use in the beginning of next year. There will be a press conference in September, where the new photocopier will be shown and demonstrated.

Trivodnian Chancellor visits Eiffelland

Chancellor Kahnemann’s visit to Eiffelland was big news in Trivodnia, but also in Eiffelland. The Chancellor of Trivodnia visited Eiffelland to discuss economic cooperation between Eiffelland and discuss defence cooperation and cultural interchange.
As part of the cultural interchange, Chancellor Kahnemann visited the Trierer Synagogue to meet with the committee of the Eiffellaendischer Judenverband (EJV), the Association of Eiffellandian Jews. In a joint statement by the Chancellor and Chairman of the EJV David Wittgenstein, both men declared that the meeting was very fruitful. The EJV will cooperate with the Eiffellandian and Trivodnian Ministries for Culture, as well as with Trivodnian cultural associations, to stimulate cultural between both countries. Furthermore, the EJV will stimulate student exchange programs between Eiffelland and Trivodnia, and will support Trivodnian students in Eiffelland.
The day before Chancellor Kahnemann’s visit, Trivodnia’s Ministers Igor Savitsky (treasury) and Dmitry Rybak (industry), and Eiffelland’s Ministers Heinz-Dieter Lardinois (finance) and Dr. Stephan Roepke (economic affairs) discussed economic cooperation between Eiffelland and Trivodnia, and cheap loans to rebuild Trivodnia’s infrastructure, while Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz and Chancellor Kahnemann discussed a closer cooperation between the two countries regarding defence.
After the meeting, both Chancellors gave a joint statement to the press in Schloss Bellevue. Chancellor von Seydewitz emphasised the fact that both Trivodnia and Eiffelland are democracies, and that both countries hold the principles of human rights dear: “Those are key factors that make us countries with common goals.” The Chancellor also commented on the cooperation regarding defence: “Eiffelland is not an attacker. Eiffelland is a defender. We defend ourselves, we defend our allies, and we defend the principles we stand for. Do not forget that half of our armed forces consist of conscripts, people who are obligated to take up arms in the name of the country. Those people are forced to risk their lives for the country, something the country can only do for the greater good, not for landgrab, powergrab or international prestige. But when we see the need to defend, we will defend with everything we have.”

Silas Keith’s and Alexander Gunn’s become popular in Trier

It is not so long ago that the two Gunnish whisky distillers Ardmar and Glennwillie introduced their new brands of whisky blends Silas Keith’s and Alexander Gunn’s. The introduction of these two whisky blends was accompanied by an intensive commercial campaign. Representants fro Ardmar and Glennwillie indicated that the blends were mainly meant for making coctails, but also to sell less intense and cheaper whisky brands in Long Sea countries. At least in Southern Eiffelland and the Long Sea Islands, the whisky consumption drops dramaticly during the summer months, simply because Eiffellandians generally don’t like high-alcoholic beverages during Summer.
The two new whisky brands are targeted at a young public. Danceclubs in Trier are already serving the new whisky brands, mainly as ingredients for cockatils, but also for drinking without mixing, or drinking it on icecubes. The first weekend after the introducrtiion of these new whisky brands was relatively successful. The clubs decided to focus on mixing of the drinks, and that plan worked out.
Other dance clubs and night pubs in Trier will follow.

Elections in Rheinland

There are still four days to go until the end of the holiday season, but the election campaigns in the Rheinland have already started. Traditionally, this province votes Christian. At this moment, the CDV and the PCL together have 40 of the 100 seats, and the polls foresee stable results for these parties. The far right Volksunion, however, is foreseen to loose some seats. Also the SPE is foreseen to loose some seats; the Rheinlanders are afraid of what has become known as the Niedereiffel-scenario (a centre-left coalition between SPE, LDP and PRP). The elections have been scheduled for 16 September. Due to their proximity to the many provincial elections, the election in Rügen and the national election (all taking place in the first four months of the year), the Rheinlandian elections are considered an important measure for the popularity of the national coalition.

Gunnlandian Queen-Dowager arrives at Universitätsklinikum Weissenfels

Today it became known that the Queen-Dowager of Gunnlandia arrived in Weissenfels to undergo a treatment at the university hospital there. Neither the hospital nor the people accompanying the Queen-Dowager wanted to tell where she is going to be treated for. A spokesperson of the Royal House indicated that the Königlicher Garde” will assist in protecting the Queen-Dowager during her stay in Eiffelland: “We know that the situation regarding the Throne of Gunnlandia is delicate. We consider that an internal matter of Gunnlandia. What we don’t want to see, however, is that something happens in Eiffelland that will decide the situation regarding the Throne of Gunnlandia.”

Christian parties win provincial elections in Rheinland

Today the results of the elections in Rheinland became official. The Christiandemocratic CDV and the Christian PCL managed to increase their positions in the provincial parliament, at the expense of the sociodemocratic SPE (from 27 to 25 seats) and the far-right Volksunion (from 5 to 2 seats). These are the seats in the new provincial parliament.

CDV (Christiandemocratic): From 33 to 37 seats.
SPE (Sociodemocratic): From 27 to 25 seats.
FDV (Market Liberals): Keep 17 seats.
PCL (Christian): From 7 to 8 seats.
LDP (Socioliberals): Keep 5 seats.
PRP (Pacifist-Socialist): Keep 4 seats.
KPE (Marxist-Leninovist): Keep 2 seats.
VU (far right): From 5 to 2 seats.

Meanwhile, the new coalition is also known. CDV and FDV will form the coalition in Rheinland.

Queen-Mother Alienora found dead in Schloss Friedrichsfelde

The Royal Family of Eiffelland announced in a press release that Queen-Mother Alienora was found dead in her bed this morning. The death of the Queen-Mother was totally unexpected, despite the fact that she was already a frail woman who wasn't able to attend last year's celebration of the King's 60th birthday. The cause of death was confirmed as a heart attack. The funeral will take place on 28 October.

Milk can lids flying everywhere

It is a centuries old New Year tradition: Making lots of noise during the New Year Night to chase away the evil ghosts of the past year. At least that was the idea behind it when the tradition started in Xinhai. At a certain moment, the Xinhaiese started to ignite fireworks during the New Year Night for that purpose. The rest of Europe adopted that tradition, not to chase away the evil ghosts, but to give parties an extra touch. Especially the New Year’s Eve party.
The Eiffellandians, however, lifted the tradition to a higher level: They put carbide and water into an old milk can, put the lid on the can, and then ignite the gas emerging from the reaction between water and carbide with a torch. The sound is enormously hard, and the milk can lid is shot about a hundred of meters away. Most people are smart enough to bind long ropes to the lids, so that they don’t need to walk that much to get the lid back. And this carbide shooting is not just limited to New Year’s Eve; people already start shooting on 27 December, the day after Christmas, and go on until 1 January in the evening. This tradition is cherished almost everywhere in Eiffelland. Even the people on the islands do carbide shooting, even on the small island of Blauort in the Kalahari Sea. The only place where carbide shooting is explicitly forbidden, are the mountains, due to avalanche danger.
This tradition is the only reason why the old-fashioned milk cans are still produced and sold in Eiffelland. Although it is mainly a tradition of the rural areas, also some people in the cities have milk cans just for the carbide shooting in the last days of the year. It is rumoured that even the Princes Johann and Franz have milk cans just for the carbide shooting, and that they sometimes use them in the gardens of Schloss Charlottenburg or Schloss Schönhausen (where their oldest brother the Crown-Prince lives).
But even the carbide shooting can be taken to a higher level. Some people are not satisfied with the sound produced by the milk can construction, so they use old liquid manure tanks or long tubes, of course leading to harder blasts, more fun for those people, and sometimes broken windows.

I showed clips of the Dutch tradition of carbide shooting to a Bulgarian guy once. He was impressed.

By the way, when I’m invaded, it could be that I will RP some rural guys shooting at enemy soldiers with milk can lids. Be warned.

Chancellor reacts on accusations of Eiffellandian involvement in failed coup d’état in Crotobaltislavonia

In a press conference at Schloss Bellevue in Trier, Chancellor Graf von Seydewitz reacted on accusations by the Kadikistani government and Professor Hammersmith-Black from the SWR that Eiffelland would have been involved in the failed coup d’état in Crotobaltislavonia: “The Government of Eiffelland was definitely not involved. We have considered, and still consider, the events in Crotobaltislavonia an internal matter of Crotobaltislavonia. IF there were really Eiffellandians involved on the side of the rebels, then they acted without the approval of the Government of Eiffelland, and definitely did not act on behalf of the Government of Eiffelland, even if they claim to do so. Any rumours that the Government of Eiffelland was involved are based on false information.”
On questions about a threat of war with the Rurikgrad Pact, the Chancellor said: “We drew one clear line: Kadikistan has to stay out of Trivodnia. As long as the Rurikgrad Pact respects the sovereignty of Trivodnia, and of course the sovereignty of Eiffelland and its allies, there will be no war with the Rurikgrad Pact.”
