The election results have been published by the National Electoral Bureau and show a record breaking turnout of more than 87.5% of the citizens eligible to vote coming to the ballots. The final result shows a very close competition between the National Union and the National Democratic Party, with both of them winning around 33% of the votes, followed by the Socialist Party earning only 14% of the votes, with the smaller parties coming afterwards.
This is a huge increase for the right-wing populist National Union, riding on a wave of discontentment brought on by economical stagnation, and the recent expansion of the Rurikgrad Pact. A decade before, the National Union didn't even win a seat in the Assembly of the Republic, and four years ago they managed to get only 8%, now becoming the main party that broke the old two alliance system, called in Beiran politics, 'the turntable'.
While opinion polls made right before the debate showed that the National Union would have even stood the chance to win more than half of the seats, it has been observed that the calls for the referendum to restore the monarchy and Anibal Cabral calling himself a "counter-revolutionary" have reduced the support they had, pushing them now to look for coalition partners, should they want to form a government.
The final results reported by the National Electoral Bureau show that the National Union took 33.5% of the votes, followed by the National Democratic Party with 32.5%, the Socialist Party with 14%, the Popular Party with 8%, the United Party of the South with 5%, the Liberal Initiative with 4% and the Green Party with 3%.
From this division of the Republican Assembly, the formation of the governing coalition will be hard, as the National Union did try in the past to befriend the Popular Party and the United Party of the South, by promising continued christian democratic policies to the first and autonomy to the Isle of Faro and Cabo da Sol to the second, but this gives them only 46.5% of the seats, in government and thus there is no chance for them to get through the vote to form a government. They will need to get some more support, but the Liberal Initiative, which could be their salvation is a longtime ally of the National Democrats and has no intention of supporting the right-wing alliance.
On the other side, the National Democrats have a chance to form a coalition government too, if they manage to get, besides the Liberal Initiative, the support of the Populars and the United Party of the South too, but that leaves them with only 49.5% of the votes to form the government and they will need to get the Green Party support them too. For that, the National Democrats will need to win back the friendship of the Populars and promise the Southerners a change from their traditional unitary policy towards more federalism. They did start that, but it has been said that local medium of education is not enough and autonomous budgetary powers should be given to them too.
The Socialists, because of their low number of votes have no chance of being in power, as even with the other small parties supporting them, they barely get only 34% of the votes. Their only chance will be to negotiate with the National Democrats in either offering them support and confidence or go even further and create a grand coalition, as a National Democratic, Socialist, Liberal, Green and Southern alliance would have 59.5% of the votes. Such a grand coalition was never seen before in Beiran history, as traditionally, the Socialist and ND party were the centre-left and centre-right rivals. It would also be seen as highly volatile.
Meetings between the party leaders will soon begin to discuss potential alliances and to see what type of government will Beira have, a minority government led by the National Union, or a grand coalition of the mainstream parties.
"It is clear that Anibal Cabral and his National Union managed to dislodge the National Democrats from their traditional place on the right half of the political axis and push them towards the centre. There are three ways of a government to be formed and I believe that while the grand coalition will be a premiere, The way Cabral proved to be a political loose canon, very self centred, not even his own party centred, but self centred and unpredictable, will make smaller party leaders try to stay away from him. This will mean that there are bigger chances for the South and the Populars to unite with the National Democrats, but they will try to gain the most out of it too. The problem with the mainstream party leaders will be that they need to offer good governance in this administration, because without it, the popularity of Cabral and his National Union will just rise from their own mistakes and at the next election, we will see them sweeping most of the seats in parliament," stated Netuno Morais, political analyst and professor at the Catholic University of Ribamar.

Survey regarding the monarchy: O Independente has started it's own survey in regards to the monarchic question asked by Anibal Cabral and have asked the opinion of about 5,000 Beirans, on what their think regarding the restoration of the monarchy. A little less than 20% have stated that back in the days of the monarchy, the political and economical life was much more stable, and they preferred to return to that, while a little over 80% have stated that the republic was created as a revolt against absolutism and even if the proposed monarchy would be constitutional, republicanism is now a part of the Beiran identity and needs to be kept like this. Most of the supporters of the monarchy are part of the 60+ age group, which have seen the dictatorship of the Social Republic and have grown up in the poverty brought on by the chaos of the 3rd Republic, while the younger people have a more egalitarian, republican and secularist view on life. This makes the redaction wonder if the votes for the National Union are really supporting of the party or are a protest against the mainstream political factions.
