Finance Minister Karel van Leck defended the creation of the commonwealth during Question Period

Commonwealth Act Passed in Fulanistan, Presidential Elections Saturday & Sunday

Fulanistan's legislature passed the Commonwealth Act, which permits the entrance into the new Batavian Commonwealth. Faced with reasonable opposition, the act none the less passed. Finance Minister Karel van Leck defended the creation of the Commonwealth during Question Period today when the opposition Conservatieve Unie said it was tarnishing Batavië's image abroad. Minister Van Leck couldn't disagree more.

'Mr Speaker, this is a completely voluntary commonwealth. It was suggested after numerous bilateral meetings with our friends in Fulanistan and it will be a mutually beneficial organisation. Furthermore the President of Batavië will be a neutral, apolitical figure. He or she will not represent the government of Batavië, rather the people. The people of this great country and the great country of Fulanistan. The members opposite, they would not further our relations with Fulanistan. They would rather see a struggling relationship. Shame on them, Mr Speaker. Shame on them.'

A two day election will begin at 8.00h on Saturday morning. Poles will also be opened during Sunday. Post ballots are also being distributed throughout the BRA held North by the EDF peacekeeping mission. Whoever is elected President will be inaugurated on Monday morning and will most likely fly to Fulanistan the following day. Mr Joost van Randburg, the Conservatieve Unie's chosen candidate for President and favourite to win this snap election, said that his first official act will be an official visit to Fulanistan where he will meet with the government and learn as much as he can about the country and people. He also said that he would enrol full time in Arabic classes.

Meanwhile the Commonwealth Act has received wide criticism across the continent of Himyar. The Foreign Ministry continues to defend the move highlighting its mutual creation and the retention of full independence and sovereignty by Fulanistan. An official working at the Foreign Ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that 'most people, these other governments in Himyar, they don't understand this Commonwealth. They instantly think colonisation or something else ridiculous like that...this is a cultural and economic engine. They will see and then they will cease their rhetoric.'

That remains to be seen. Members of Parliament from the opposition parties have expressed their concerns about the Arab population in Fulanistan. They want to ensure that they are included in the benefits from this commonwealth. All Presidential candidates have said that their primary concern will be the inclusion of the Arab majority in Fulanistan.

His Majesty's Government will closely observe the presidential elections. Furthermore, we look forward to cooperate with the incoming head of state and our ambassador will present new credentials, as the prime minister will cease to act as Batavie's chief of state.

As to the matter of the Commonwealth His Majesty's Government appreciates Batavie wants to take a more active role on the international stage. However, we recommend the Batavian government to assert their claim to more international activity in a calmer and less hasty way.

The comments emanating from the Batavian foreign ministry are highly insulting and degrading to the great Arab nation and the peoples of Himyar. We demand that action is taken against these rogue voices within the Batavian diplomatic corps to prove to us any good intentions that may or may not be left following the re-establishment of Batavian colonial aspirations in Himyar.

There are no colonial aspirations. The commonwealth is an optional organisation of equal benefit to both Fulanistan and Batavië. The entire process is democratic and will reap untold cultural benefits. Foreign Minister Arjan van Vliet has made it clear his desire to travel to Hajr and discuss specifics with his Hajri counterparts. Only then can a lasting understanding be achieved.

We thank the Eiffelandian government for their offier of support. Due to your country's proximity to the Papal States, we would like to ask for permission to base a team of agents and civilian staff near the border to base our peaceful search operations from.

Aussenministerium
Trier, Eiffelland

Eiffelland has a cordial relationship with the Papal States, not only due to religious reasons. We do not want to damage that relationship. Apart from that, plans like outlined by you would form a clear casus belli in front of the CoN. Therefore, we cannot allow such a base to be grounded. I'm sorry, but we decline your request.

President Joost van Randburg spoke after his inauguration in Vlaanderen

Joost van Randburg Elected as First President of the Batavian Republic

Joost van Randburg, the opposition Conservatieve Unie's candidate for President, has one 64 per cent of the vote after a weekend vote, which included post ballots from the BRA-held North. Mr Van Randburg was inaugurated at a convention centre in downtown Vlaanderen where Prime Minister Alex De Jonghe introduced him before the 9 High Court judges bestowed him with his honours and credentials. President Van Randburg seemed happy and proud today and addressed the group shortly after becoming the Batavian Republic's first head of state.

On the top of his agenda, he says, is 'sorting out this Commonwealth business. Maybe we should have named it something else because people, especially those in other Himyarite governments appear confused.' His first official order of business will be a visit to Fulanistan where he will meet with government officials and discuss the unstable political situation there and the reaction to the Batavian Commonwealth on the continent. The Foreign Ministry also reported today that Hajri officials refused a West Germanic States offered negotiation process, a sign, so they say, that the Arab country only wants to continue 'fabricating lies'.

President Van Randburg was born and raised in Poortstad, the main port city for Vlaanderen, which lies up the Oude Roer (Old River). The city was and is an industrial area constantly busy and growing ever busier these days with trade growing at exponential rates in the country. He went to De Graf People's University (now Universiteit van Vlaanderen) and received a degree in history and later a masters in French Studies. He worked for most of his adult life as a professor in Spa. He fled the city when it was taken over by the Batavian Republican Army in December, 2009. When he was asked by the opposition Conservatieve Unie to run as president, he almost turned them down.

'I had no idea anyone in Vlaanderen knew about me. I didn't even know we had a president!'

With protests around Himyar and even in Fulanistan itself, President Van Randburg says that he hopes to change sentiment of the Batavian Commonwealth on the continent, at least in Fulanistan. His closest friends say that he is a down to earth guy who likes to be with the people, not above them. But will he mingle with the crowds in Zandburg, Fulanistan? How will Himyar react to his visit to the continent and will they accept him as a visitor for talks? It all remains unclear, but we will find out tomorrow.

'We need it for our infrastructure, for our people.' they said. Most large profits are still years away.

  • Foreign Minister Arjan van Vliet said that the West Germanic States came forward with an offer to mediate talks between Batavië and Hajr. Batavië accepted, Hajr declined. 'It's unfortunate that they would rather spit out lies and stir hate than sit down and discuss the facts.' he was quoted as saying.

Contrary to the malicious anti-Hajri propaganda spread by the Batavians, the Sultanate refused the offer of mediation by the West Germanic Nations -- courteously -- because this is not simply a matter between Batavia and Hajr, but between Batavia and Himyar, in fact, Batavia and the world. There is no room for colonialism in the present-day world.

I want to remark that, albeit the poor wording might suggest otherwise, West Germanic officials did at no point allege that it was a sign that "the Arabians" want to fabricate lies.
This is either a remark by the officials of the Batavian Ministry of the Foreign or an erratum.

President Van Randburg is the legal president of the Batavian Republic and the Commonwealth of Fulanistan. Fulanistan did not elect President Van Randburg as he will be choosing from a Fulanistani prepared list of recommended Governor Generals. The Governor General will be a Fulanistani national and native acting under the same powers as the president and will partake in most Fulanistani related affairs.
