:!: Election Results In!

:!: Radilans were able to enjoy one of their favorite pastimes… voting. Turn out was good (around 75%), and despite some intense vitriol before hand, it was very clean. As is custom, all schools, banks, and most places of work were closed. After voting, most Radilans enjoyed another of their favorite pastimes… having a few drinks while watching the results come in.

The Left Bloc was able to hold onto its plurality, but saw its advantage cut dramatically. The news on the right wasn’t very good either, with the Liberals having their worst electoral performance in decades. The winners were the Centre Bloc, picking up seats in both the Assembly and Senate.

One surprising, and somewhat concerning, result was that the National Front had its best electoral success since the end of the Apartheid. It doubled its seats in the Assembly and in the Senate. Most analysts attribute this to the controversial Regions Bill that may have stirred up old racial tensions.

As the parliament is hung, with no group able to form a government by itself, negotiations between all of the blocs are underway. It seems likely that the Left and Centre blocks will join in a grand coalition again, as their previous power sharing arrangement worked well.

The blue chips were mixed today, with a noticeable boost in manufacturing and a hit to banking and finance. The uncertainty of the conflict in Wazistan and the dispute over regulating international money and trade markets is likely what put a damper on the finance sector.

:!: Wazistan Crisis Near Climax
:!: Radilo to Participate in Peace Talks
:!: Government Formed: D’Anise to Stay PM

:!: Courtesy of the AP wire, Ijad: Tanzim rebels mounted a fierce attack yesterday in the suburbs of Ijad, the Wazi capital. The rebels already control wide swaths of the country, including its northern coastline and the area south of the capital. The Islamic government is increasingly loosing its grip of the nation. Opposition leaders have called for the Ayatollah to step down, and allow the rebels to take the capital without further bloodshed. So far the Islamic government has refused to lay down its arms.

:!: Nymphenburg Palace: The Security Council is debating the enforcement of Resolution 6. Part of the proposed enforcement would include a representative from Radilo as part of a multination/NGO delegation that would negotiate an end to the violence in Wazistan. The Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that it was “very supportive” of such an initiative.

:!: Nouveau Port: After a few days of intense negotiations, the Left and Centre blocs have agreed to continue with their power sharing agreement. This will leave the cabinet largely unchanged, though there will be more posts given to the Centre then there had been previously.

Nouveau Port: Treasury Minister Aloise Rubrique said in a press conference that he is skeptical of the Intergovernmental Monetary Agency.

“…While I do not doubt that the validity of the IMA’s wish to create monetary stability, its methodology is not in line with policy objectives of the Third Republic. As such we shall remain impartial to the body for the time being. Radilo will continue to work with its trading partners to achieve both monetary and economic security…”

:!: Aggression in Eurasia
:!: Progress in Bavatië
:!: Nationalist Front Demonstration Turns Violent

:!: Kraliyet: The ongoing conflict between the Životinje and Barazi has seen little international attention apart from those nations intimately involved with either state. As Barazi is not a member of the CON, no motions have been made in its condemnation or support within the chamber. As of yet the Foreign Ministry has not said anything regarding the situation, though a high ranking official tells Les Temps that the government intends to stay neutral. Allies of Radilo including Belmont, however, have issued statements condemning some of the tactics of Barazi , but have not indicated their support for the Životinje.

:!: Vlaanderen: EDF Peacekeeping forces have made significant progress in stabilizing Bavatië. The rebellious Spa region has been separated from the rest of the nation by a so far highly effective EDF demilitarized zone. Because of this enforcement, some trade and other interactions between the north and south of the country have begun to resume. Radilo does not have any troops stationed in Bavatië, but it has been providing material support and funding for the operation. The Defense Ministry re-stated that it is unlikely that Radilan peacekeepers will be sent to the region, especially now that the situation is settling down.

:!: Nouveau Port: In what many political observers consider to be the most extreme move since the were ousted from power 46 years ago, the National Front staged a massive demonstration in downtown Nouveau Port. They marched in the street with guns and batons and shouted threats to blacks and to the Prime Minister D’Anise. After several hours of parading up and down the main corridors of the Capital they stopped in front of the Parliament Building, where several Molotov cocktails were thrown. After the Capitol Police confronted the mob, all hell broke loose. In the ensuing fight several officers and Nationalists were injured, though thankfully there were no deaths.

Condemnation of the National Front has been coming from all sides of the political spectrum, with the Prime Minister and Opposition leader issuing a joint statement denouncing the riot and the National Front.

:!: Elections in Wazistan
:!: Affirmative Action Law Receives Mixed Reviews

:!: Ijad: Now that the tumultuous civil war that collapsed the Islamic Regime in Wasistan has ended, the country’s first truly democratic election in more than a generation is set to take place. In full view of the international press for the first time, these elections are set to choose the parliament, regional legislatures, and eventually the first President of the newly christened democracy. While the remnants of the old Islamist regime are competing in the election, they are unlikely to gain power, say Wasi politicos. The leader of the anti-clerical resistance, Jamal Bishara, is expected to easily win the Presidency.

:!: Nouveau Port: Prime Minister D’Anise has unveiled the Government’s plan to introduce stronger mandates for the hiring of Nethians in the private sector. This plan has unsettled some in the Grand Left-Centre Coalition. Elizabeth DeSalle, Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the PRRS, has stated that she fears that the law drafted by D’Anise will put too many restrictions on business to hire.

“There is already an affirmative action law in place,” said DeSalle, “these revisions to the 1964 act, however, seem to be more than counterproductive. The quota requirements alone would make it nearly impossible for businesses in predominately French departments to hire any new workers.”

The proposed act would mandate that 2 out of 3 new hires would be required to be ethnically Nethian, which is reflective of the relative ethnic ratios for the entire country. However, certain areas, such as the Costal Departments, that population ratio is reversed. The argument in favor, though, points to the radical difference in unemployment rates between blacks and whites, with only 3% of whites and 15% of Nethians being unemployed. So supporters contend that the hiring ration should be higher for Nethians, even in Departments and regions where whites are the majority.

:!: Crisis in the East
:!: Wazi Elections
:!: Commonwealth Debate Renews

:!: Nokanawa: In the eyes of most Radilans the Oikawan Empire is a singular massive state in the Eastern Hemisphere… it isn’t. Rather, it is a collection of many different nations under the (largely) nominal rule of the central government in Nokanawa. This has been made most evident by a full on war between two of the nations within the vast Eastern Empire. Jizhou, the largest of the nations has been engaged in open conflict with Tenzing, one of the smallest. The actions of the Jizhou sub-state have drawn international criticism. Only hours ago, the Radilan delegation the CoN had cast a ballot affirming condemnation of the Republic of Jizhou.

:!: Ijad: After years of turmoil and transition, the Islamic Republic of Wazistan finally has a democratically elected parliament. This new institution, while a sigh of relief to international observers, is still likely to be beset with problems. Foremost amongst these is that the large majority of parties in the new parliament represent ethno-sectarian interests as opposed to national ideologies. This could further, rather than dampen, sectarian conflict in the coming months and years. A bright note though is that most parties (excluding Hezbollah) seem willing to work across demographic lines.

:!: Al A’raf: In the Hajri Sultanate the Arab nations of Himyar have gathered to discuss their opposition to the Batavian-Fulanistani Commonwealth. Many in Himyar are opposed to the nominal re-unification of colonial power and colony, suggesting that it symbolizes a new wave of imperialism. For most of its modern history Himyar has been ruled entirely by European powers, and many within the continent view the recent actions of the two colonial counterparts as threatening to the independence of the whole continent.

The Third Republic is not participating the al A’raf conference. This is likely because that Radilo still maintains a nominal commonwealth with Montelimar, its former colonial ruler. Why is this though? Why is it that the birthplace of Himyan Nationalism is more than happy to exist with some of its colonial baggage intact? To be short, it was Apartheid rule. For generations, the dark days of the Second Republic loomed over West Himyar… then established was a nostalgic longing for the Dominion and the First Republic, both in strong commonwealth with Montelimar.

 JHMC Takes Full Control of Itself… Finally

Nouveau Port: JHMC has finally achieved its centuries old ambition: to own its own name. Jas Hennessy – Moët & Chandon of Radilo has been at odds with Moët & Chandon of Arendaal for nearly three centuries. It all started when a young Josephine Moët first laid eyes on Jas Richard Hennessy—it was love at first sight. The company that came out of that love affair was JHMC, which has had as much to do with Radilan and international politics, as it has with liquor. The only problem was that Josephine had siblings… and they also used the Moët & Chandon label for their business.

The two families fought for generations over who had the rights to the Moët name. Two years ago Jas Louis Moët Hennessy, the current head of the Hennessy Family, sat down with Clarisse de Dreux, CEO of Aren Luxury Enterprises (ALE), the then owners of Moët & Chandon Champagnes… they hatched a deal to end the dispute and turn over the full rights of the JHMC name over to the Hennessies. It cost 11.5 billion euros, but the greatest rivalry in the world of alcohol was over.

A few days ago the transition was completed, with JHMC acquiring the last bit of Moët & Chandon, by buying all of the obligatory non-voting preferred stock in ALE three years early. For the Champagne enthusiasts, though, there is little to worry about, as part of the deal was the JHMC would change nothing of Moët for 50 years… a promise that Jas Louis has said will extend to over a hundred.

The Republic of Jizhou is outraged by the ignorant, racist, imperialist and destructive comments and actions of the Radilo government. Firstly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take the time once and only once to correct that the informal name of our nation is "Jizhou" and not in fact "Juzhou" or "Jiz." Further, the State in which the Republic has undertaken a brave, necessary and objectively legal police action is Tenzing, rather than "Tanzing," as this western government has published.

More importantly, the Republic criticizes Radilo's support for the Empire of Oikawa as their forces engage in a terror bombing campaign that especially targets civilian residences. Radilo can expect a harsh response from the Republic in the future. For now, we shall let it be known that your government prefers terror bombing and genocide over counter-terrorism.

Les Temps apologizes for grammatical typos in its English Edition. Some of the spelling differences between French and English were not taken into account before publishing. These have been corrected on the online edition. On a second note, I would like to state that this paper is not a publication of the Radilan government. To put it very clearly: we do not speak for the government of Radilo.

:!: Apartheid in Akhaltsikhe
:!: Terrorists to go to Marquette for Trial
:!: Affirmative Action Bill Fails

:!: Tetri Tsqaro: Radilo has been a traditional ally of Hajr, why the binge-drinking Radilans and the tea-totaling Hajri are allies is a complicated story. One issue, though, does bring the two nations together, along with all (or rather most) of the nations of Himyar, the opposition to the racism that so haunts the continent like a dark specter against the Green Sea.

In response to the new laws out of Akhaltsikhe that makes it illegal for an interracial couple to even hold hands in a public place, President Auguste and the Sultan Huseyn have both released statements condemning the new Apartheid-esque measures by the Executor’s regime in Akhaltsikhe.

Many in Radilo, where the Apartheid regime held power for over 70 years, were particularly offended. Despite the outrage, the PM has said that she will not be recalling the Radilan Ambassador from Akhaltsikhe. D’Anise noted that there is still the opportunity for dialogue between ethno-sectarian sects in Akhaltsikhe.

:!: Nouveau Valmy: Members of the radical anti-monarch terrorist group, the Red Clay, were arrested in a recent sting operation by Radilan police, with help from Marquin intelligence. The alleged terrorists have lost their appeal to halt the extradition, so they will be sent back to Marquette and tried for terrorism. The SIR has not released their names out of concern for national security.

:!: Nouveau Port: D’Anise was dealt a major political blow today, after the National Assembly rejected her proposed Affirmative Action Bill. The Prime Minister was not able to convince all of the members of her own party to support the measure, with over a dozen crossing the isle during the vote.

D’Anise has announced that she will not seek to re-introduce the legislation, or rework it to make it more palatable… meaning that it is now all but dead. Many political observers believe that not reforming the legislation will end the potentially politically devastating possibility of the Grand Coalition breaking up.

Elizabeth DeSalle, leader of the PRRS and granddaughter of Jas Lyon DeGinghs and Great-Granddaughter of Lunette Deginghs, has said that because the issue is dead means that there are no more major rifts between herself and the Prime Minister.

:!: Crisis Unfolding in Republica del Sur
:!: Cardinal Issues Statement Supporting Democracy and Liberalism

:!: Verbad o Consecuencia: Over the last year the situation in the Republica del Sur has deteriorated significantly. Refugees have been pouring into Nouveau Port to escape the repressive regime and collapsed economy. The military has been cracking down on dissidents and official government reports have stated that hundreds have been summarily executed for protesting the current regime. The increased protests are the result of pervasive, extreme poverty and an economy destroyed by hyperinflation.

Over the last several weeks the regime has imprisoned several journalists from Eiffelland, and seized all assets owned by foreign companies. This included several thousand acres of vineyards owned by JHMC.

Fearing an even further crisis, Prime Minister D’Anise has ordered that the whole Radilan–Republica del Sur boarder be remilitarized, and has put the Republican Armed Forces on high alert.

:!: Nouveau Port: Dominican Catholic Cardinal and the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastic Province of Nouveau Port, Desmond Rakuul, responded to conservative critics about his stances and those of the Catholic Church in Radilo.

"...In response to those who contend that democracy is counter to the core beliefs of the Catholic Church: I say to you that you are in every way wrong. Because democracy is the very form of government that has enabled the realization of many of Christ's objectives. Democracy is what created the welfare state, in which the poor and destitute are helped. Democracy has enabled the sick to receive care, regardless of their ability to pay. Those who cannot buy food are given food, and those who are homeless are given shelter. No other form of government has so effectively initiated these policies. We see that private charities and the good will of Christians and all people of faith, while good and very beneficial, are not enough to achieve these ends.

I also will continue to have my bishops and priests ordain marriages homosexual couples. While I know that sodomy is a sin as defined by the bible, it is no more of a sin then heterosexual couples engaging in sex for reasons other than procreation, or engaging in non-conventional intercourse. But, my brothers and sisters, I contend to you that nowhere in any holy text, or ruling form the Cartheta, states that matrimony is reserved only for those of opposite genders. I will also say that it is more of a sin to deny the love of two people, then ten thousand acts of sodomy..."

The office of the Archbishop of Nouveau Port has traditionally been the post designated for the most liberal Dominican Catholic Cardinal. This tradition dates back to the 1890s when the Catholic Church attempted to pressure the Apartheid to lift the harsh laws against blacks.

Lies and propaganda from Radillo government media. We have not heard of any so-called `refugees' fleeing to Radillo. In fact, the news is the other way around. Thousands of Radillo citizens have applied for Republica del Sur visa and travel documents to live a rich and joyful life in our prosperous country. We therefore ask you to rectify your slandarous reporting with a most sincere apology to all Republican citizens.

To Your Assembled Eminences,

The article in Les Temps accurately quotes me. And while it is not the full text of my letter, my words were not taken out of context. Though, it can be contented that those were the most “controversial” of my remarks.

To such extent, I stand fully by my remarks. And I am willing to travel to Dominici to argue for my stances.

Humbly,
Cardinal Desmond Rakuul, Archbishop of Nouveau Port

:!: Oil Embargo Drives Up Gas Prices, Amongst Other Things
:!: Conflict Continues in Otchi State
:!: Cardinal to Head to Dominici

:!: Talemaniki/Paris: Because of the Belmontian support for the newly established regime in Jurzan, the Talemantine Empire, a major oil producer, has put a unilateral oil embargo on Belmont. While Belmont never got a large percentage of its petrol from Talemantine, the embargo has caused speculators to drive up the international price significantly.

So far the Radilan government has sent mixed signals regarding recognizing the Jurzan State. The CoN delegation remained neutral in the debates about SC 13, and the Foreign Ministry has not issued a statement supporting either the EDF’s position or that of other allies like Harj.

:!: St. Gorge: While specific details have not been released, allied forces are continuing the fight against the remaining Freiheit forces to secure an independent state for the heavily oppressed Otchi People. The Prime Minister’s office has confirmed that there are many Radilan forces participating in the operation, but again did not offer specifics.

:!: Nouveau Port: Cardinal Desmond Rakuul, the Catholic Church’s most liberal archbishop, has been called to Dominici to explain his positions on gay marriage and other issues. The Cardinal had stated that he is more than willing, even happy to go to the Holy See to discuss and defend his positions and those of the bulk of Radian Catholics.

:!: Radilo Recognizes Jurzan, Pressures Other EDF Members
:!: PM Denies Supporting Rebels in the Republica del Sur

:!: Nouveau Port: Parliament easily approved a measure extending formal recognition of the newly found State of Jurzan. The measure was endorsed by the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, hence its easy passage. Polls show that a majority of Radilans support recognizing the newly established regime, and black Nethians supporting it almost unanimously.

The Prime Minister has announced that the Radilan Delegation will be sponsoring a resolution in the CoN General Assembly to recognize the new state. Radilo is the second EDF member, and the first senior member, to formally recognize the new regime. This will likely put the country at odds with the Talemantine Empire, who has already issued an oil embargo against Belmont for extending such recognition.

More pressingly, though, the Foreign Minister has announced that it will be putting pressure on Raidlo’s fellow EDF members to extend the same recognition, which they have thus far been reluctant to do. The Minister has also said that he believes that the Talemantine Empire has gone too far with its operations and that it is in violation of, rather than enforcing, the CoN mandate.

:!: Nouveau Port: A spokesman for Prime Minister D’Anise has said in a press conference that the Radilan government is not supporting rebels in the Republica del Sur. Reporters pressed the spokesman on why rebels were found with Wiesen weapons and Radilan Livres.

“Well,” he said, “old Wiesen weapons are available on the black market all around the world. And that because of the currency situation in the Republica , it would be logical for many of its citizens to turn to other currencies, especially one that originates close by.”

The spokesman also said that Radilo would continue to allow in refuges from RdS, despite some pressure from Parliament to restrict the flow.

:!: Conclave to Start, Cardinal Rakuul Gains Support
:!: Military to Increase Presence on RdS Border

:!: Dominica: With the passing of Pope Marcus-Clemens II, the College of Cardinals is to convene in the Holy See to choose a new pontiff. Most of the world’s heads of state will be in attendance for his funeral, including President Auguste. After the feuneral the period of morning has ended the cardinals will make their decision.

Cardinal Desmond Rakuul, Archbishop of Nouveau Port, is heading the Radilan delegation to the conclave. Rakuul, the spiritual leader of Radilan Catholics, was already in the Holy See, defending his very liberal views on marriage. While many doubt he will be electable as pope, because of his very liberal views, church watchers make him out to be a king (or rather pope) maker, as he will be able to sway the sizable “liberal bloc” of cardinals to a particular candidate.

:!: Nouveau Port: As turmoil continues in the Republica del Sur, the Prime Minister has announced that there will be additional assets placed along the RdS-Radilo boarder. Prime Minister d’Anise has stated that this should not be looked at as an aggressive or provocative action on behalf of the Third Republic. Rather, as a measure aimed at preventing the instability in RdS from spilling over into Radilo.

The Prime Minister also restated that Radilo is not providing funds and weapons to rebel groups in RdS.

:!: Tishonga Refugee Camp Grows
:!: Parliament Debates Asylum Rules
:!: CoN Passes 59-7

:!: Tishonga, outside of Nouveau Port: as the situation in the Republica del Sur continues to deteriorate, the Tishonga Refugee Camp is exceeding its maximum capacity. Built by the Radilan government to house around 60,000 refugees, the camp now holds over 100,000 refugees fleeing civil war and economic hardship in the RdS. The government is having trouble integrating the refugees and relocating them to other parts of the country.

“They are coming at a faster rate than we can find jobs and housing for,” said one social worker.

It is estimated that the cost of the camp to the Radilan government is over a million livre a day (4 million $). And over crowding has began to yield health and social issues within the camp.

Prime Minister d’Anise has asked for help in dealing with the refugee situation before it becomes a crisis. She asked Radilans to open up their wallets for the refugees, donations of food, building supplies being of top priority. She also asked the international community for help as well.

:!: Nouveau Port: As the situation in Tishonga intensifies, so do calls in parliament to reduce the flow of refugees. While opposition leader François Labonne has said he does not support blocking refuges from entering the country, members of his party, and some from the ruling coalition, have began to suggest that the tide needs to be stemmed.

:!: Nymphenburg: The General Assembly of the CoN voted 13-3-4 to pass resolution 59-7. The resolution, proposed by Radilo, seeks to end the Talemantine occupation of Jurzan. The effectiveness of the resolution, however, is questionable, as the only Security Council, not the General Assembly, has the power to compel the Talemantine government to end the occupation. And Oikawa, a permanent member of the SC, is opposed to the resolution. The GA resolution does, however, show that the international community supports an end to the occupation; this alone is likely to compel the export dependent state of Talemantros to act.
