Discuss the CMS here. We will want to figure this out quickly to make full use of it swiftly.

(23:38:57) (NeoBritFag) what is cms exactly?

Content Management System - the article system you can access by clicking on 'Home' and which I ultimately want to use to host user written RP articles, RL-related articles, tech updates and more.

Alright, earlier on in the we had a couple of posts about how we could put the CMS system to use, I'll just summarize some of the ideas and proposals that came up earlier on and invite everyone to contribute his or her ideas on how we can use this thing to enrich our community. Here are some of the proposals I have or heard before:

-An objective international news channel
This news channel wouldn't be tied to one nation but be a multinational affair, though unlike Belmont's APwrite thread, this news channel would have a central editorial team (maybe two or three players) reporting on general events in Europe, conducting interviews with important individuals and posting editorials on the current political climate. I think it'd be a bit confusing if every single nation has their news posts on the front page, but one active independent news outlet would be pretty cool to have. We have had it before (for the oldfags, Aahj's thing I forgot the name, I remember some kick-ass graphics though) and I considered it a valuable contribution to RP.

-RP Guides
Currently I have yet to really bump into a RP Guide, so this might be the time to start a community initiative to develop a couple of guides. First of all what to do with when you initially come here as a player, the very basics such as a the introduction thread, opening a news channel, basic forum rules, etc. A introduction to RP thread, with the basic rules for RP and some do's and dont's. All of this could also come combined with a clear set of open rules (if not RP rules, then simply OOC forum rules).

-A post of the month feature
We had this back in the day, which post in the "Library" or "World Struggle" sub-forums did you like most. Have a nomination thing around it, a discussion and finally a vote and the whole process is posted on the front-page. Not only can it honor outstanding roleplay (maybe the winner of a post of the month thing gets a nice paradox-style logo underneath his avatar) but it also introduces people who otherwise wouldn't visit the Library to some roleplay and encourage them to participate or do some of their own. It adds a little competition to everything and well it really can't do any harm so if it fails, who cares.

-Integration with the Wiki
Apart from the regular integration with the Wiki on the forum, with hyperlinks between the Wiki and the Forum (what Xen is basically planning right now). We could take it a step further and have the current featured article on the wiki be featured on the forum. A headline with "Featured Wiki Article", the introduction of the Wiki article and a "Read more..." link to the wiki article itself is all there is to it.

Others
-A small image which basically serves as the link to the map. I think it is pretty crucial that when people visit our forum that within one click they can have a look at our cool and pretty expansive map. It does really invite people to look into it a little bit more, and since our map looks pretty good it makes us look more legit.

-Administration updates will obviously feature on the front page. I do really think that administration updates should be a bit more frequent and should be open for discussion, with the changes coming to NSeurope this seems to be going to be the case which is a good thing. It makes it seem like the administration is actively working to improve NSeurope and actually gives a shit, which in turns motivates the general membership more.

-A quick introduction to guests. What is this community all about? What can you do here? A couple of quick links. An invitiation to register. All of that. We used to have it on the portal of the phpBB as well, let's have it here too.

-It probably ties into that objective semi-official news channel, but active updates from the Council of Nations would be pretty cool as well, since it's seems to be the main international body in NSeurope. A major election coming up in the Council of Nations? The candidates to vote for are on the Portal. Something like that. Hopefully it can help the activity of the CoN a little bit, and if nothing else it's useful filler for the Portal, making us seem more active.

Well those are the ideas I have, feel free to praise them, or shoot them down. Or else just contributing some of your own is good enough as well.

All seem like good ideas to me. We can use Carentania's guides on the Wiki and put them in the CMS. I like further intergrating the wiki with the forum, especially with the featured article. That could provide motivation for some to do more wiki-work. I also support a thumbnail of the current map returning to the homepage. It was very helpful for me when I first joined.

An unbiased international news channel thing would be cool, but we'd have to pick members dedicated to the task and unlikely to slack off for whatever reason.

These are all fantastic ideas and I think they would all have wide support. There are some difficulties that would have to be overcome for both the news channel and the featured post but whatever problems might arise would certainly be outweighed by the benefits of their implementation. A joint news source has been done/tried before, the only one I was ever involved with was one organized by Coro but sadly failed due to poor commitment on the part of some participants. I would gladly help so long as the workload was reasonable (and spread across three or more players I don't see why it couldn't be). The idea of a monthly featured post simply requires us putting together some sort of mechanism to choose it, probably similar to that we use for featuring a wiki article, the only problem being that over time interest in choosing a featured wiki article has dwindled. If this is prevented though I think things should go smoothly.

I can assist with int'l news thread. But I don't know how many of you guys looked at our wiki page, but the main page was almost always Wiese, if I remember right. I don't think I ever saw any article but his on the main page. Gotta be different. Also, the post a month thing would be good, but currently it'll probably just always be Beau, since his singular posts are the best. I think a best thread of the month would be cool too?

The official news channel was great, back when Aahj ran it. Problems with implementation: Aahj was completely devoted to administrating the site, and didn't conduct in any RP beyond that news thread. Of course, this helped him be impartial in his reporting, and he wrote some really great stuff. However, if this is run by individual RPers, then we run the risk that it simply becomes a forum for dueling propagandists, which is what we basically have already.

That said, I'm not at all opposed if we can get a decent core of dedicated contributors. I think the key is for people to focus on writing about nations that aren't theirs (at least in part) to provide fresh perspective, steer away from the propaganda danger, and to prevent the main page from overflowing with stories about internal politics in the provinces of the Kingdom of Backwaterstan.

I still don't see what's wrong with APWire. While it is every country writing about themselves, it's still quite comprehensive. If we can have an independent thread for commenting on it rather than having people post directly in it with their communiques, that'd be better. I don't want to see the home page filled with whatever 2 sentences some guy decided to type rather than the news itself. That'll be a problem with the int'l thread too.

The topic of a new Independent News Agency warrants its own discussion, and could be served best with its own . So there it is.

I think that a new news channel through the CMS could well complement the APWire. I for example use APWire to write about stuff that may not get an equally neutral dealing in my main media CNBC (mainly because of corporate or which I for some other reason don't want to deal with in the CNBC thread. And I have noticed that a lot of others do this as well, especially players RPing low freedom of speech in their nations can use the APWire to provide a more neutral, international take on matters.

Then again, the CMS should be used to report on substantial RP developments that affect multiple players, such as developments between alliances and major wars. It would separate the two fairly well and ensure them both a niche.

Yes. Only IC content should be eligible though to encourage quality contributions to the community. Perhaps even submitting entire threads, provided that they take place in the appropriate timeframe, could be considered seeing that on occasion it might be hard to distinguish a single post from a variety of contributions in the same thread.

Well we could also have an OOC post of the month as well, don't see a reason why not.
