:!: Top Story- Massoud condemns opposition support for rebellion

President Jawad Ibrahim Massoud sharply criticized the country's political opposition on Sunday, accusing its top leaders of "betraying" their countrymen by supporting the illegal rebellion currently taking place in the south and east. Speaking to a pool of journalists at his offices in central Ijad, President Massoud said he was "deeply troubled" see a number of opposition politicians "openly" backing attacks by rebels on Wazi soldiers and security forces, calling it "simply un-Wazi and un-Islamic."

The president hinted he would ask the State Prosecutor to investigate any politician, including members of parliament, suspected of engaging rebel groups.

In a wide-ranging interview with the press, his first since taking over as acting president last month, president lamented the current security situation in the country and pledged to do "all within his power" to bring the crisis to a successful conclusion. The president also offered his unconditional support for Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Mahmoud Esfandiari, calling the Leader "the heart of the Islamic Republic" and warned his fall would mean "the end of the Wazi nation forever."

The statement of support comes a day after the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Armed Forces, Brig. Gen. Jalaluddin Wali Hussain, offered his own support for the Leader and the Islamic system.

:!: Top Story- Wazistan to quit CN after Hajr election to SC

President Jawad Ibrahim Massoud announced Friday that Wazistan will quit the Council of Nations after member states elected the Hajri regime to a seat on the powerful Security Council. In a brief statement released by the presidency, President Massoud lashed out at the Council's "systematic bias" towards the Islamic Republic and called the election of the Hajr regime to the Security Council "a serious provocation against the Wazi people and nation" and proof that the Council was undertaking a anti-Wazi campaign.

The Foreign Ministry say Wazistan's CN delegation have been ordered to return home and that its offices in Wiese have been ordered closed.

The decision to quit the CN comes as members of parliament announced plans they would introduce a resolution calling on the government to withdraw from the CN after intelligence officials confirm CN officials had been in contact with rebel forces. Parwan MP Ghazi Hossein, who spearheaded the resolution, called the president's decision "welcomed news" and said it would free the country's armed forces "from the constraints of international law."

A spokesman for Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Mahmoud Esfandiari says the Leader was informed of the decision yesterday and had given his consent, calling it a "just move."

Kaddoumi is expected to speak from Ramadi within the hour

The whereabouts of Kashani, who pulled much of his fighters of the streets in recent days after the fall of Esfandiari's government appeared imminent, is unknown.

News of Esfandiari's flight brought thousands of cheering Wazis into the streets across the country, many tearing down portraits of Esfandiari and his late brothers and stomping on them with shoes, a sign of deep disrespect in Wazi society. On the streets of Ijad, soldiers could be seen removing their uniform and joining the public as news of Esfandiari's departure spread.

Many residents could be seen handing out candy to RDFW forces as they marched into the capital.

Tanzim military leader Mustafa Kaddoumi is expected to make a public statement from his base in Ramadi this evening, officials say. A spokesman for the Tanzim's Ijad commander, Abdul Hamdi Jalil, says the group was in talks with other partners within the RDFW as well as opposition politicians to re-establish order and stability in the capital.

Wazistan, On Behalf of the Sinhai Union

The Unity Party understands the struggle for self-determination undertaken by the Tanzim and other groups within Wazistan. However, the Sinhai Union will wait to see the organizational and representational structure of this new state of affairs in Wazistan before acknowledging the legitimacy of Tanzim rule. The Sinhai Union wishes to stress representation of both Kurds as well as Shi'a Persians in any future Wazi state, 'lest the violence of old be renewed upon a new generation.

:!: Top Story- Tanzim chief to quit eastern Ijad after talks

Tanzim's military chief announced Thursday that he would withdraw his men from Ijad's eastern sector, which has been the scene of furious clashes between the group and a rival Islamist militia, after ceasefire agreement was mediated by the main opposition party. In a recorded statement from his base in the southern city of Ramadi, Tanzim commander Mustafa Kaddoumi confirmed he had reached an agreement with Sheikh Abdullah Omar al-Azami of Asnar al-Mashadi that would see the withdrawal of the Tanzim to southern Ijad, where the Tanzim has largely consolidated its grip.

Sheikh al-Azami, whose forces control eastern Ijad and much of the coastline east of the capital, called the agreement "a step in the right direction" and said both groups agreed "peaceful co-existence" was key to national reconstruction efforts.

The Wazistan Islamic National Movement, whose was instrumental in bring both factions together, said the deal represented the first concrete step by militant groups to compromise in the interests of the state.

The deal has been welcomed by international diplomats, who feared the recent fighting could tilt the country towards open war once again.

WPDO endorses Loya Jirga to decide post-Esfandiari government

The main umbrella group of reformist parties is calling for a Loya Jirga meeting in Ijad to discuss the country's future falling the collapse of the Esfandiari government, officials said. The call by the Wazi People's Democratic Organization comes following a low key two-day meeting of the group's executive committee in Gaza to discuss the political stalemate that has gripped the country and serious damaged the economy. A WPDO official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, says committee was "unanimous" in its support for a Loya Jirga and that a formal announcement would be made soon.

Militant groups, including the Tanzim, had hinted they would not oppose a Loya Jirga to decide the formation of an interim government after days of gridlock amongst themselves. Even Christian leaders, long wary of the largely Muslim-dominated meetings, has suggested it would be ready to take part if it would move to process forward.

However, despite the endorsement of the committee, officials say the Wazistan National Islamic Movement has expressed reservations over a council, suggesting it could be manipulated by supporters of the ousted regime. Analysts have warned that any such council would fail unless major opposition parties, including the Movement, support it.

:!: Top Story- Officials: Loya Jirga to be held next Friday

A Loya Jirga meeting is being organized by opposition parties and tribal leaders to discuss the formation of an interim government and country's political future, officials said Saturday. Frustrated after days of deadlock between the armed militias that control much of the country, the Wazi People's Democratic Organization's ruling body unanimously voted Friday in favor of calling a Loya Jirga, or grand assembly, to break the impasse and put together a new government that would serve until other constitutional arrangements are made.

Tanzim leaders have said they would not oppose the a Loya Jirga name a new government, aware that the prolonged political vacuum has damaged the group's popular standing.

At the Interior Ministry, now under the control of the Tanzim, officials say the organizing of the meeting has already begun and that they expect more than 1,000 delegates from across the country to descend on Ijad to attend. It is unclear at this moment where the venue for the meeting will be, though many analyst predict it be held at the Grand Hall of the Islamic Revolution due to its large size as to accommodate all the attendees.

WPDO officials say its executive committee will meet on Sunday to discuss how delegates will be selected, though they have assured all ethnic and religious groups will be represented "fairly."

:!: Top Story- WPDO top brass cleared out as Bishara orders reshuffle

Main opposition leader and Chairman Jamal Bishara has directed more than three dozen senior officials of the Wazi People's Democratic Organization to submit their resignation as part an extensive reshuffle ahead of Friday's Loya Jirga, officials said Sunday. In letter addressed to the president of the WPDO National Council, Bishara described the events of the last few days as an "historic opportunity" that called for new blood within the party federation to ensure "a quiet and comfortable transition" to democratic rule.

Bishara has been monitoring national events from his hospital bed in Frescania

While the move has been described by top Bishara associates as administrative, analysts say the scale of the purge may be an attempt by the 71-year old leader to re-assert his authority have his prolonged absence. It is during that time that many say the Wazistan Islamic National Movement, the largest party in the organization, expanded its influence in many WPDO bodies.

Bishara and the Movement have often been at odds over the chairman's leadership style.

More than 50 officials are expected to be forced out or retired in the coming days. Among those targeted for retirement include the heads of the Central Discipline Commission, the Political Affairs Department, the Foreign Relations Department, and Human Rights Monitor Office.

A Bishara associate also confirmed nearly half of the WPDO Secretariat, would be cleared out, including the Secretary-General Ahmed Jawad, making him the highest official to be shown the door.

Payan Kasravi, a close ally of Bishara and vice chairman of the Executive Committee (thus the highest-ranking Shiite in the group), is not expected to lose his post.

:!: Top Story- Bishara says he won't lead interim government

WPDO chairman Jamal Bishara has told members of the organization's executive committee that he has not plans to head an interim government expected to be named by this Friday's Loya Jirga, according to officials in Frescania, where the 71-year old is reportedly being treated for high-blood pressure and back pains. International diplomats have called the formation of an interim government a crucial step in restoring stability to the country, and many had expected the extremely popular Bishara to take the helm.

Hashim Shah, a WPDO executive committee member and a strong backer of Bishara, told State TV that Bishara said he intends on remaining head of the organization, which brings together many of the country's reformist political parties and is expected to make up the backbone of the new government.

Shah says the chairman has expressed hope that the interim government head would be a "non-partisan figure."

Speculation over the formation of a new government is expected to intensify as the Loya Jirga draws near. On Tuesday, the WPDO announce it had formally approved a decree outlining the make-up of Friday's grand council meeting after days of negotiations. More than half of the council's 2,329 delegates would be appointed by the 27 provinces, where delegate seats were allocated based on population.

Political parties that are members of the WPDO have been allocated a total of 200 delegates, with the Wazistan Islamic National Movement holding the largest share with 90. Wazistan's diaspora community, which some estimates put at nearly 12 million, have been allocated 500 seats to be elected by Wazi-affiliated national groups.

Now the remaining 464 delegates will be reserved for religious and ethnic minorities, women, and civic groups.

Persian leaders, who reportedly boycotted the drafting process of the decree, it as provocative and warned it would mean the Loya Jirga would be controlled by the Arabs and Christians, who dominant the WPDO and diaspora community and would therefore gain extra seats under the executive committee's decree.

Mahmud Nadir Kakar, the head of the Pashtun National Congress party, which aligned itself with the ousted clerical establishment former Revolutionary Democratic Party, called provisions in the decree "dictatorial" and called for changes to give all of Wazistan's major ethnic groups an equal number of delegates.

We urge the transitory authorities to consider Wazistan's reapplication to the Council of Nations to ensure continued stability and peace in the nation, potentially with the help of the Council and its proven peacekeeping structures.
