ReutersNewsBreak: Christian opposition leader gunned down in Eitat
EITAT (Reuters): A van full of masked gunmen opened fired late Wednesday on a Catholic Church in the western city of Eitat as services ended, killing a prominent Christian opposition leader, his wife, and 19 other people, party officials have told Reuters. Emergency officials say more than 21 bullets were removed from the body of Malouf Khouri, a former mayor who head the small Democratic Catholic Assembly party, and that it appears he was the intended target.
Khouri, who's party was align with the dominant Revolutionary Democratic Party for decades, broke with the clerics earlier this year and denounce the rule of the Supreme Leader. Party officials say that militants from the pro-government Bahj militia had warned he was a target for assassination.
There have also been reports of series of explosions at Eitat's Saint James' University, though Reuters is unable to confirm them at this time.
