I suppose it will have to be the NS side of things. I've previously roleplayed my nation being squarely in the 21st century, so it wouldn't be too compatible here IC.

Not sure if it would be possible to RP the 50s-era version of my nation here and the modern version on NS?

Our In Character world (outside of the NS-related board) has no connection to the world as it exists on nationstates.net, so nothing stops you from playing a version of your country here and one in another timeline on the NS forums.

Before you post a claim, though, I'd begin working on your Concept in the Cooperative Corner here:

You can post your concept, and also where you want to be placed, and you're sure to get a lot of feedback. The last 2-3 pages of the map claims thread should have claims which are not currently updated onto the map, so either check them out OR let someone inform you of those claims in your Coop thread. You don't want to have a surprise argument with someone over who claimed a plot!

We don't use NationStates for stats; almost all of us got into geopolitical RP through NS but, with unrealistic populations and budgets abound, we decided that we'd go for more realism. The current date is set 60 years in the past (late 1956), so make sure your population and GDP per capita reflects that era. A lot of RP is done via news posts and reactions to that news, so I'd recommend getting started there and letting that develop.
