Foreign Minister Alvitr and I left Cornavia this morning for the next stop of our tour: Derjiste, Kryobaijan. We will be joined by recently re-assigned security expert Robert Petursson Viereskog, formerly (perhaps infamously) of the Knytlingsfort Police. We left shortly before the hostage crisis in Farpoint began. On behalf of the Oelarian State, we hope for a swift and peaceful resolution of that crisis.

Important trade talks with Cornavia included discussing plans for the construction of a Gunnrsund line to connect Yungdrung Gutsak with Southport-on-Sea, and more generally the Borean and Germanian continents. The Oelarian State will look among regional partners in the Train Systems Alliance, as well as multinational corporations and foreign governments, for investors for this project.

We are also proud to announce that various Franconian foundations are prepared to invest hundreds of millions in education. Prime Minister Roerich will discuss these grants at greater length with Lord Bishop Zebulon.

Trade, regional security, and development investments will all be on the table when we arrive in Derjiste tomorrow after a short stopover at Mimir Abbey where we will rendezvous with Robert Petursson.

A Transcript of the Lord Rigpa's Eulogy for Eir Scion

The Lord Eir, the beloved Lion of the Sindhu in this country, and most dearly my friend Sigvarthur Sigvarthursson, asked me to make a few brief remarks.

I bring to you a message of hope.

Death, we know, is the dark door that looks out upon infinity. And so we do not mistake our finitude, which the elder Gravplass called our precarious existence where we come into being between the finite and the infinite, for the whole of life. We hope to understand this mystery, but we understand we shall not come into the fullness of the mystery this side of death.

Terje Sigvarthursson was sometimes described as a prodigal son. Are you surprised I am saying this? But we do not honor a man, surely, by obsequious obsequies upon his death! I say this: the prodigal son in Luke 11 was the son to be saved because he returned home repentant and knew he deserved nothing in this world. Let us pray Terje Sigvarthursson returned to his eternal hope repentant.

No man, not even Terje Sigvarthursson, dies before his time. None of it is our time.

With the Lord Reeve and the captains, the Eir Clan has long kept the reeve of the King in this country around Knytlingsfort, in Oberschlesnitz, along the Sindhu Valley. They have served our King, Christ Jesus, and no other, as faithful servants of the Doom. Today we thank them for that gift of peace, especially as it has been bought at such a dear price.

Stoker Ahead In Polls For Monday Reeve Election

Who will the other lords support? So much of this Knýtlingsfort election, I think, has been the people of this city trying to gauge who power-brokers in this country will support. It is a shame, truly, because it shows the limitations of democracy in Oelar, and especially in this city.

Those of us expecting a showdown between two well-known poets, famous artistic adversaries and torch-bearers for the great political movements of the early 1990s, have been disappointed. Instead, an electorate is apparently indifferent to the men themselves. This is not because, as you will hear smug Yungdrung Gutsak students say, they are illiterate. Illiterate street children in Knýtlingsfort can recite Stoker and Himmelright poems by memory from an early age. No, instead, the voters by necessity focus on the man perceived to be closer to Oelarian power-brokers who might be able to stabilize the city.

It is not an unreasonable question. The Knýtlingsfort electorate realizes that the new Reeve will not be able to keep the peace without the Eirs, the Swordbrothers of Mimir, and the Rigpa's Einherjar whose soldiers guard the street. So they will vote for the candidate whom they think the Great Lords will help to provide peace. At the beginning, it looked like A. A. Himmelright was the Eir candidate. Now, with the death of Terje Sigvarthursson and the arrival of the Lord Rigpa's troops and the Mimir's Swordbrothers, the people calculate that G. S. Stoker is their favored candidate.

Or at least they calculate that the power of the Eirs is waning, and A. A. Himmelright will not have enough friends in Yungdrung Gutsak to help Knýtlingsfort. Himmelright's paramilitary strategy backfired when a bold police team, perhaps by accident, stormed an apartment and shot T. S. Eir to death.

Democracy was another casualty shot to death in Knýtlingsfort. Democracy died when Lieutenant Robert Petursson Viereskog was sneaked out of the city in the dead of night and the Knýtlingsfort Police were more or less furloughed. So I predict Stoker will be chosen, but already I would not call this a fair "election". Elections cannot take place amid fear. Perhaps Gregor Samsonsson, as the next Lord Reeve, will be able to provide real order necessary for democracy. We can hope, if this city has any hope left in its heart.

Homosexuality and the Christian Church
Bishop Calls For International Bishops' Meeting

Here follows an open letter of the Bishop Zebulon of the Diocese of Yungdrung Gutsak.

Recent statements from Pope Stephanus IV, in a letter to the Catholics of Eiffelland have caused some controversy among Dominican Catholics and among other faith communities. The Holy Father disambiguates the sacrament of Holy Matrimony from marriage in general. Matrimony, a word that comes from mater or "mother", is a sacrament we give to prospective fathers and mothers who will raise a new family. Line 8 of the letter is clear; homosexuals cannot consummate the sacrament. It is not a sacramental marriage. The lifelong commitment of two homosexuals is a marriage, a joining-together, of another sort. (Recognized in civil law in Eiffelland as well as here in Olmolungring.)

I know my brother bishops in Eiffelland, Franken, Belmont, Wiese, and across Europe are beginning to debate the context of the new obiter dictum on homosexuality.

Of course we must be patient. I hope there will be the opportunity for a synod of the Scanogermanian bishops on the matter.

An excursus. Homosexuality is complexly related to the priestly sex abuse scandals that wracked Olmolungring in the late 1990s. At that time I called sex abuse what it is, an absolute perversion of Christ illuminating total gift of self, the most perfect evil correlating to Christ's self-sacrifice. I warned our Church that Satan might prey on those who were driven to the margins of society because of their sexual orientations, and urged all of my pastors to be inclusive to queer persons of every kind.

But it was a trying time. I was obliged on one occasion to report three offending brother priests to the rigpa, who is a close friend of mine. I urged Thorlakur Feargusson to show mercy, but the judges and the Lord Rigpa sentenced them to death and demanded their estates be burned, in this case, their vestments and parish churches. I was called a traitor by some among my fellow priests, and felt betrayed in turn by my good friend the rigpa. The Spirit elicited powerful passions on many fronts, and it took courage by all to defend their convictions.

So at the time of the pope's recent letter, I wrote His Holiness to tell him his statement was wise. Nonetheless, we have specific theological disagreements. In Line 3, His Holiness argues all sin is a matter of choice: "Without the free choice, no sin can be committed." Respondio there exists a natural sin, an original sin, a sin of being beings separated from God, independently of making choices that forget this seperation. In Line 6, the pope, citing the authority of Paul, says the celibate life is higher than the married life. I am no through-and-through Gravplassian, but respondio the highest form of the ethical life is the married life.

I am in broad agreement with the pope, however, in regards to the central tenets of his pastoral letter, which are admittedly the most controversial. Reflexive ethical doctrines cannot transgress a theological mysterion. We must remember again that love is a mystery.

Stoker Wins Knýtlingsfort Revialty; So What?

We woke up this morning in Yungdrung Gutsak to the news from our friends and neighbors that exit polls from Knýtlingsfort were recording a landslide victory for Gregor Samsonsson Stoker. In the Muspellheimr-Dyrehaven district, Capitollium students who had not seen the sunrise for years could be seen waving red flags. I, too, am pleased for my friend.

A. A. Himmelright's dirty trick to release documents chronicling Stoker's involvement with the terroristic Sparticist Command Oelar in the early 1990s (wisely not printed in respectable broadsheets like this one) was a desperate trick that looks like it may have worked against him. But Himmelright makes one good point that Left-Sarconists should ponder. As Lord Reeve of Knýtlingsfort, Stoker cannot in fairness really do anything.

It is perhaps the second most-powerful office in Olmolungring, in terms of power. Fine. But insofar as Oelar has no political state, Stoker cannot begin seizing school buildings from the Church. (He won't, incidentally. Wisely, Prime Minister Roerich brokered a compromise to install Stoker's close personal friend, Fr. Matteus, OSM, as Vicar.) To do so would use the brute force of the Knýtlingsfort Police without any real legitimacy.

For foreign readers this might sound strange, so a little background on S. M. Gravplass and G. R. R. Sarkon. Sarkon politicizes the existentialist philosopher Gravplass, using his philosophy to critique Septentionalism or Scanian Idealism. All Sarconists are opposed to that modern form of Viking-obsessed revanchist monarchism that one saw (and sees) in Arendaal and Franken, which portrays itself as a "neutral normal" but disguises expansionist and fascist tendencies. But Sarconists are also opposed to Germanic Idealism.

The debate between Left-Sarconists and Right-Sarconists regards the meaning of Germanic Idealism and its "System". Sarkon himself is not clear. If it the "System" is that which denies the place of the individual or the spontaneous in broad historicist dialectics, as Right-Sarconists believe, then Sarconism must be simply anti-quietist, and affirm there is a place for the "Gravplassian religious subject" or "anonymous Christian" in politics. If the "System" is more than that, a matrix of oppression that helps prevent the individual subject from knowing who he or she really is, as Left-Sarconists believe, then Sarconist politics comes to look more like intersectionalism.​

As one who has devoted his scholarly career to exploring the possibilities for leftist anarchism within Sarcon's work, I caution my friend Gregor Samsonsson. We must learn from the Gravplassian undercurrents in the work of revolutionary intellectuals in Zivotinje. No existing modern European nation-state, except perhaps now the Blue Union, is legitimate; all force nonconsensual cooperation. Olmolungring is a traditional nation with three important judges -- two reeves, of whom Stoker is now one, and a rigpa -- that enforce the terms of an intelligible moral tradition. Oelar is not a political state.

One problem of what I call in my work unreformed intersectionalism like that of the IPK regime that came to power in Kryobaijan in 2009, is that it does not recognize that the nation-state itself is not only a tool of repression but a condition of perpetural repression. Reformed Intersectionalism must create voluntary political states of autonomous persons.

If we really want to "Forward the Revolution", to use Karel Haas's memorable if perhaps apocryphal remark to G. S. Stoker when Haas was working for the former Batavian regime, we will have to build a political state of consenting citizens.

I hasten to add, Gregor, that we need not think in terms of borders like 19th-Century empires. Our political state needs no territory; let consenting citizens join and the rest continue to live under the rigpa's traditionalist rule. But suffer no interference from the reactionary forces; we can win if we make the political state stronger than any rigpa's idolatrous attempt to create the Heavenly Kingdom on earth!

The IPK, the Kryobaijani people, and the European Oppressed applaud the victory of Gregor Samuellson Stoker as a victory for liberation — a liberation that cuts across social strata and breaks down demographic barriers. We are sure that the Oelarian people will benefit from Stoker's tenure as Knýtlingsfort Reeve, in whatever faculty is sociopolitically cogent for their nation.

On a separate note, while Alasdair Jónstyrsson Sýmeon would critique the state as a mechanism for liberation, he fails to account for the instances where there is a plurality of states (or any unit social delineation) within the geographical borders that would constitute such a preexisting polity. In these circumstances, when there is a disparate endowment of power among groups, the (Intersectionalist) state is a necessary tool for reestablishing a parity of rights and liberties, as seen in Kryobaijan. Without compulsory statehood, the Oppressed have no recourse — those who would do them harm may hold no stake in any collective norms or established moral traditions which would otherwise wield the scales of justice. This being said, we respect the alternative conceptualizations of conventional, compulsory statehood (or lack-thereof) which has been implemented in Olmolungring. Furthermore, we welcome the friendship and mutually beneficial exchanges that will surely be strengthened during the ongoing Alvitr-Nodishenko talks in Derjiste.

Gallian War Shows Severe Deficit of Int'l. Authority
Meridian Europe Needs Regional Community to Coördinate Peacekeeping

Even in Meridian Europe, one of the most stable regions of the world, peace is fragile. Southern Gallia appears increasingly likely to host a conflagration of international proportions.

The escalating conflict demonstrates the need for a regional forum that is the geographic scope of the old Tiburian Empire. A community more effective than the Council of Nations must be created in Meridian Europe to forge ties that will protect the powerful economies of the entire Scanogermanian region, including the Gallian subcontinent. Even more precious than the prosperity of the region, the values of Western Christian civilization (that once grand cosmopolis eponymously called 'Europe') might disappear; individual liberty, cross-cultural tolerance, and rational moral inquiry were nursed in the cradle of the great Meridian cultures.

To quote the great Franconian-Oelarian classical scholar, Ljón Hugosson Strauß, "The shadows of Toyou, of collectivist, irrationalist, and slavishly traditional civilization, are ever growing, cast westwards over Sarmatia and in the darkness gathering over the Great Sea. A narrow thin thread of cultural memory - the legacy of Tibur, of Christ, and the Enlightenment - stretches from Zivotinje to Arendaal like a strand of tungsten to light the world. But it is caught in the iron vice-grip of Toyou's communists and Toyou's ancestor-worshippers. And it is ever flickering and casting longer and longer shadows."

For a half-century, Oelar preserved this tiny thread of civilization by keeping the communists from making an axis from Kryobaijan to Batavië that long threatened to bisect the free world. The outcome in the election in Knytlingsfort strongly suggest that the Oelarian people, exhausted from this effort, are capitulating to the collectivists in large numbers. How much longer will it be before our ancient kingdom becomes a communist military base?

Now, Toyou has made a beachhead in Southern Gallia. How will Scanogermania respond? How long can Meridian Europe remain fragmented, divided, and picked apart by the collectivist puppet-masters of Toyou and Sarmatia?

We object to the comments made today in the Capitollium Journal. The claim that world civilization is equal to that of Tiburan Christendom is a neo-colonial attitude which does not belong in this day and age. It is an insult to a world populated by many other culture-spheres far more ancient than that of Northern Christianity. Himyar is the home of the most ancient civilizations in Europe, and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the founder of the noble religion of Islam. Allah's Inviolable House is a culture-sphere of its own, separate but equal to that of Northern Christianity.

We regard the salonfähigkeit of cultural superiority sentiments, and ex-imperial arrogance in the Northern nations, as a worrying phenomenon. It is at odds with the heterogeneity of Europe. Cultural attitudes such as these can only be damaging, especially considering the many non-Christian immigrants and their descendants currently residing in the North. We must remain watchful that their rights to dignity and respect of their indigenous culture is respected and cherished.

Bishop Condemns Belmontien Attack
Has Strong Words for Archbishop of Paris

It is always a danger that the Christian Church will be compromised by the nation-state and co-opted for political ends. When the Church articulates a just war position - a controversial idea in itself - it must be very careful. War is a serious matter. Does Belmont possess jus ad bello? This is admittedly still difficult, even now, to see. If their response was at all proportional, the threat posed by Coronado must have been imminent and grave indeed. But it is not clear that Coronado was preparing a great assault against Belmont, or that Belmont protested such an assault through diplomatic channels. Nothing is clear, yet. Certainly the matter is not clear enough to determine where God's justice will fall.

And yet my brother bishop in Paris further adds to the confusion, calling the Belmontien attack "divine justice". No Catholic has the right to speak about the mystery of God's justice this way, without trembling at the thought of speaking for God, without an acute awareness that we might be making an idol out of God, a tool of Him. I warn the archbishop to choose his words more carefully, lest it is Paris, not Toledo, in which Christianity must be restored.

Again Christendom seems to overtake Christianity, that Christians believe it is enough to call themselves "Christian", that to be a so-called "Christian" gives you the right to behave as you will - not as a Christian - unto a so-called "heathen". I call this the fallacy of the Pharisee, I call this false prophecy, I call this making an idol of doctrine.

Please join me in praying for the people of Belmont and Coronado.

Closely-contested elections are the sign of a healthy democracy. We were all surprised to learn early this morning, when the votes were all counted, that two familiar faces and incumbent candidates lost. My foreign minister, M. H. Alvitr, was defeated by S. J. Hvít in the Skiringssal Farthing by the narrowest of margins. And of course by even narrower margins, we have all heard by now, came the report that I defeated M. G. Strang in the Skálholt Farthing. At last report, Foreign Minister Alvitr has conceded to S. J. Hvít. The new Intersectionalist League of Oelar has made impressive strides in this election and really connected to voters, and I congratulate them.

The allegations, however, that have been made by M. G. Strang about a fraudulent result in Skálholt, and the role of myself and the ILO in a political conspiracy, is false. Magnus Gunnarsson has alleged, first of all, that I tampered with my results, and second, that the ILO helped me defeat him because of his refusal to join Sýmeon, Hvít, and Gutkind. First, my role as prime minister of the Oelarian State afford me no influence over Council elections, which are administered by the Lord Rigpa, not the state or my government. Second, as A. J. Sýmeon, the ILO Chairman, has made clear already, he and I did not communicate at all during the campaign.

Commander Eir has announced there is not suitable grounds for any investigation of the matter, and has apologized for reported incidents of ballots that were temporarily misplaced and the length of the process in general. Since my effectiveness as prime minister is compromised by any plausible charges against my integrity, I am bringing a defamation suit against M. G. Strang that will necessitate an investigation by Commander Eir and which will be heard by the Lord Rigpa immediately following its conclusion. I hope it will satisfy M. G. Strang and his supporters, particularly those in the Associated Trade Unions.

Great Council Convened to Elect Rigpa
Identity of Rigpa-Elect to Be Publicized Soon

Last Wednesday, the Great Council of Olmolungring convened in secret to elect the LIV Lord Rigpa of Yungdrung Gutsak, the lictor lictoris raised to lead our people by God Almighty. The conclave, per tradition, was secret, as is the identity of the rigpa-elect. And so I am not allowed to divulge the identity of our new leader. Our LIII Lord Rigpa Thorlákur Feargusson Gunn will announce the results from the Freehold soon after the new year.

Thorlákur Feargusson has led this nation for fifty years and must be warmly congratulated. To paraphrase King Alfred IV of Franken at his birthday last weekend, at the end the Lord Rigpa was able to overcome our "old stories and issues" and usher in a bright future for our Northern Germanian region. It has been my distinct honor to lead the Lord Rigpa's Government as Prime Minister this past year.

Challenges will lie ahead for the new Lord Rigpa to keep our nation safe and safeguard the Republic. Resounding calls from the Oelarian people to create a more integrated government, a truly national Republic extending over Issverth and Knytlingsfort such as we have never had, have been heard. But it must be a Republic to which every citizen assents, a Republic within - not coextensive - with the People. A mixed constitution, the Philosopher says, is best. So it must be a Republic under the Lord Rigpa, beside the Church, among the Clans, safely behind the Aircommand and the Einherjar.

If we stay true to our highest ideals, that Law is made by God Alone, that no man or woman should be coerced by an all-powerful idolatrous State, and that we are a People of charity, we shall forever prevail.

Lord Stoker to Marry Foreign Minister
Lord Alvitr Confirms Marriage of Daughter Margarethe

Foreign Minister Margarethe Hjovarthursdatter Alvitr has announced her engagement to Lord Reeve Gregor Samsonsson Stoker, taking many in Yungdrung Gutsak, including her friends (If I may say so myself!) by surprise. Stoker, one the most popular poets of modern Oelar, has rapidly become a leading statesman after winning the revialty of Knýtlingsfort. The two were classmates at the Capitollium, but their friendship was thought to have waned. Neither married and both are in their early forties.

M. H. Alvitr took over as foreign minister from her younger brother Isleifur Christian Hjovarthursson Alvitr earlier this year. Christian is rumored to be a likely choice for rigpa. The Great Council has not revealed its decision in the election yet, which took place on December 22nd, which is the subject of much speculation. News of the marriage has heightened speculation that either I. C. H. Alvitr or G. S. Stoker has been elected, and the marriage was arranged in part to guarantee deals made by either side. In the past this practice has been informally known as hostage-taking.

Although they were not known to have been dating, both deny the marriage is a guarantor of any political deal.

Three Year-Old Named Successor

In a widely anticipated announcement, Lord Rigpa Thorlákur has promulgated the decision of the Great Council to choose his successor. Thorlákur Feargusson Gunn will not step down within the year as expected, but according to a document prepared by Prime Minister Roerich will "remain rigpa for such a time necessary as to oversee a peaceful transition of power to his grandnephew Theodor Pallsson". Theodor Pallsson is the three-year-old son of the Lord Gunn, Pall Yvosson.

Isleifur Christian Hjovarthursson Alvitr, who was frequently considered the most likely candidate to become the next rigpa, will serve as the lord protector for the young Theodor Pallsson.

As expected, there has been a change in government, which will be a grand coalition of various different factions. Robert Petursson Viereskog will replace N. N. Roerich as prime minister. Unexpectedly, Prime Minister Viereskog has confirmed that Roerich will remain as foreign minister. The new transport minister, F. J. Gutkind, will keep his post. But two new portfolios have been created. As the Diocese once again takes over his short-lived Vicariate, Fr. Matteus of Ljonyja, O.S.M., will join the government as the country's first Education & Welfare Minister. Also, a War Ministry has been created from within the Transport Ministry, but no minister has been named as of the time this paper goes to press.

An Irony At the Heart of the Nation
New Prime Minister Critiques Government Patterns

Countrymen:

It has been a great honor of which I am truly undeserving to have been appointed the next prime minister of the Oelarian Republic. I have been an ardent student and admirer of the Lord Rigpa Thorlákur. Oceans of ink have been spilled with respect to Oelar's inability to face reality, and more learned men have questioned what this "reality" constitutes exactly, except for the media-driven fantasies surrounding exercises of technological power elsewhere in this world. I side with the latter. But.

But in the fallen world of power and competition, know that our nation's power is dependent on an air force which in turn is dependent upon the goodwill of the Cornavians and the Franconians. To be a realm of light, blissfully set above the rest of Europe, we require the tinder provided by darker realms, men for whom the price of security is measured out in evils committed in the name of 'being realistic', where this is even 'common sense'.

We have none of the serenity or comfort of Arendaal or Eiffelland. Our ideas, however, have the purity of snow, the highest snows of Mount Kailaish. The strength of painters' colors and poets' words, not the strength of arms.

The irony is that to preserve this for the people, the leaders of this country's government must be not poets themselves (although the rigpa, the spiritual leader, must be given the last say) but rather people adept at dealing with the Franconians and the Cornavians, the Arens and the Suionians, the Kryobaijanis and the Batavians. I place my faith in Foreign Minister Roerich and will assist him at this task, which will be my first task.

Contemporary Assertionists Clique

It should be surmised by the entirely brief and grovelling words of the New Prime Minister that the dereliction of his duty to both God and Country have already been compromised. As any truly free man or woman can see, he seeks only to deceive, for whenever a presumed leader declares his proxy servitude to the entirely pitiful Monarchy of Blood and Shadows, it is the hard working and down to earth citizen who suffers. There seems to be a fundamental incomprehension of what it is to truly live, to bask in ones own exasperating liberty, the fact that freedom cannot be crossbred in to some hybrid of Royals and Representatives seems to escape the Prime Minister completely.

His talking points express flattery, when they should express the fearless assertion of freedom. Make no mistake about it sons and daughters of Olmolungring, honest folks, friends, this man dares to take the easy wrong over the hard right. When service is required, he will seek to exploit. When impartiality is required, he will think of his precious Rigpa. There can be no one, no you, when another declares him or herself of a higher precedence then you. Examine your values, your virtue, the mighty character within us all that exists way down deep in your bones. Ask less of your Government Officials, ask that they do not bow beneath the hierarchy of North West Europe.

Consider this not a challenge to the Prime Minister, who will now view us as adversaries, but as a challenge to the people. Not simply the workers, businessmen, or even aristocrats. A challenge to all sons and daughters of Olmolungring, regardless of race, religion, or creed. Assert yourselves in this outdated society, take up responsibility for the direction of your country, because rest assured: the Elite will do so at your expense, if you stand by a moment longer to watch.

What Is Freedom?, or On Liberal Assertionism
The Philosophical Foundations of Right: A Conversation

The editors of this Journal received the message below in response to Prime Minister Viereskog from one Rafal Hollad, a "contemporary assertionist" from Zivotinje. A rebuttal explaining the Sarkonist definition of freedom and its philosophical underpinning and implications, explained by Robert Petursson, co-written by J. S. Keiser and M. J. Sittmann, is featured in today's issue.

It is the hard working and down to earth citizen who suffers. MJS: What is freedom? Every truth has an epistemology. Assertionism asserts that, "I am free because I assert my freedom." It is brutally logical. Freedom becomes the act of asserting freedom. Freedom is what I say it is. "Mighty character"? Epistemological assertionism is nothing but egoism at best, nihilism at worst. Either way it is meaningless.

JSK: Exactly that! Logical, alas, but also, strictly speaking, meaningless. A non-contradiction, see? If I was invited to your house for dinner and kept screaming "1+1=2", it would still be a quite logical statement, but utterly meaningless. This Hollad fellow does not understand that the meaning of freedom is that we are mysteries even unto ourselves!

MJS: Deus interior intimo meo. Amen. Our unknowing is a space of freedom the very breadth of the universe - the most intimate and the farthest-flung thing beyond the stars - the space and time of freedom wrapped into God Himself.

RPV: It seems to me, Professor Keiser, that the assertionists' tautology means freedom is nothing, for freedom is whatever I assert and precisely that I assert that not. I assert my freedom is your slavery. And why not? Who shall tell me what freedom is? Who shall tell me I cannot assert this?

JSK: Right. As nihilists, they bend the word 'freedom' to whatever use they desire. No assertionist has ever given a sound argument to defend the premise 'Man ought to be free." They have no metaphysics.

RPV: Is man born free and only lately chained, as a famous Belmontien once claimed? Man is born puny, weak, and dependent, chained by love to his mother's teat for the very stuff of life itself. Is this freedom? I shall grant Bishop Zebulon this: yes, love is freedom if it is what we are made for, if it is what will always make us perfectly happy, if it is what we will always choose when the shackles of ignorance fall from us, if it is essentially who we are. But in our fallen world this is not necessarily what we mean by freedom, friends! We are one step closer, though, and we have discovered a great truth. Man is born dependent, yes, to a mother, yes, to a father, and yes, to the ruler of his tribe. Because man is dependent upon his makers to be whom he is. Man is dependent, ever, upon God. This puts the leader of a nation, like the Lord Rigpa, in a difficult position. Man must be ruled; but Christ has set him free. Christ has won the great victory and chastised the rulers of the world to judge in His Holy Name alone. So in Oelar, the Lord Rigpa keeps peace. He rules but may not govern. He keeps the Doom but does not invent new laws that men will obey. He may only keep the peace. Beyond this, free men in Oelar choose whether to be governed or not by the laws of men.

MJS: Well put, prime minister. But the rhetorical flourishes aside, the main point is that Sarkonism does give a philosophical foundation for freedom. An existential and even, some say, post-metaphysical foundation for right was first theorized here, in these very halls [of the Capitollium] by S. M. Gravplass.

JSK: Before the modern evolutionary synthesis was completed in the natural sciences, it was easy to found a basis for right. Nature had a fixed structure. History had an ultimate design. It's not lunacy, it's the age-old Aristotelian paradigm that leads to ideas like "natural rights" and "progress".

MJS: Now, not so. Scientifically, who knows how man will evolve, given evolutionary conditions in the future? What is "man" anyway if he will be biologically altered from generation to generation? What differentiates man from ape and man from man? Species becomes a conventional device, a variable rather than a fixity.

JSK: Precisely. So we have no basis for natural rights - no old Christian natural law tradition - no basis for appeals to historical plans inherent in tradition or progress. No metaphysics, it would seem. What do we have?

MJS: This is the brilliance of Sarkon translating Gravplass comes in. We have a statement of epistemological skepticism, namely: If natural science declares man to be a variable, natural science will never be able to give an exhaustive account of what man is. Philosophy begins here. Our unknowing is the space for freedom.

JSK: So Sarkon proves that you can't have social science or managerial science or technics of power, social-democratic government programs or communist regimes, &c., ever create a utopia for human beings. They can't understand what will make human beings feel happy or be loved. They can't make absolute laws that apply to man - and they have no right to do so. So from Gravplassian existentialism to philosophical anarchism you have our idea of political "freedom" sketched out. It's this space to pursue your own goals without any power over you claiming ultimate authority. Ultimately it's your being-ness before God and God alone.

MJS: And so the political scientist will understand these core ideas tell us why no nation-state has ever been created in Oelar, why power is overlapping and pluriform. The concept of the state is utterly alien to the social imaginary of the Oelarian people, just like it would be alien to feudal lords and peasants.

JSK: As a result, Oelarians don't get agitated about 'freedom'. You find 'freedom' in countries like Zivotinje, I think, is a chimera. But also in Franken and Belmont and all the Meridian countries. Freedom is an idea nobody understands. The empty space, the void where God used to be. Pure desire. Nobody can really attain this 'freedom'. It's a fantasy of pure power without any objective correlates, without any 'victims'. Prime Minister Viereskog can be perfectly respectful of the Lord Rigpa, who guarantees the peace - the first condition of freedom - and otherwise stays out of our lives except to share his spiritual wisdom and guidance. And any Oelarian, equally, can ignore Prime Minister Viereskog's government, can ignore its taxes for instance, so long as they do not disturb the Lord Rigpa's peace.

RPV: It is a misunderstanding on this Hollad fellow's part, I believe. At their best, I expect a good assertionist philosopher - I have never met one, alas! - would say that it is an openness to Reality and whatever man might make of that for himself that is the spiritual foundation of freedom. But it comes not from self-knowledge, but the fact that we could not possibly comprehend the sheer multitudes we embody, the deep mysteries of our persons. The Delphic oracle's gnothi seauton is, in Gravplass's words, an eternal striving to know our paradoxical natures, infinite souls in finite bodies. Freedom is a respect for this unknowing and all that we have yet-to-know about ourselves. If they knew anything about freedom, they would put down their guns and forget about their nation-states, move to a quiet and beautiful mountain country, and pray!
