[SUP]HØJ SUVERÆN AMBASSADE
[/SUP]DEN KONGELIGEHOF SANKT ANSGAARD TIL FENNMAERK
For the Purveyance of State and General,

With the elevation of Statholder Joakim Hayha to the status of Marshall of State of the Fennian Union, due to internal consensus, I have been obliged to direct to you the wishes of the Danish Kingdom and Empire.

It is from the personal direction of His Danic and Agderric Majesty in a formal announcement, delivered by the Hofmester of the Court Royal, Svantepolk
Søby-Bjerring, that His Majesty the King and Emperor bestow the Marshall of State Hayha in the Order of the Dannebrog and the Gilded Sword of the High and Mighty King Jorgen the Great, the latter a symbol military and grand state prowess, itself an emblem of the three-hundred year fight and eventual success, against Germanian suppression, in the guise of the Wiessereich, and the single-minded restoration of nationhood under His Majesty King Jorgen, the Great, who single-handed decapitated the heads of twelve of the governing Wieserreicher overlords in a public square under his own hand in 1660, the state honour a memorial and symbol.

I am also obliged to communicate that the known central thoroughfare Middelwej, one of Christiansborg's transits of traffic towards The Palace, be renamed Marskal Hayhaagade.

It is with immense esteem that the State of the Great and Little Danes recognises the elevation of this, a Statesman of redoubt and international reknown.

Upon benign declaration and friendship,

Rr GUDBRAND KARL THRANE REFSGAARD

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The Union Congress is to be presented with the 1953-1954 Union Budget at the start of the next week, as the Council of Ministers has finalized its work on the specifics of the budget program. According to Treasury Minister Anton K. Alanko, the exact details of the budget will be revealed on Monday before Congress. However, Alanko spoke on some of the portions of the budget, including the introduction of the new vehicle tax and the abolition of the road toll system on the Union Highways, regional routes and certain bridges and tunnels. Additionally, the introduction of "vice taxation" concerning alcohol and tobacco - 5% for tobacco products, 5% for beer and other mild alcoholic drinks, 10% for particularly strong beer and wine and up to 15% for liquors - was confirmed by Treasury Minister Alanko.

"The purpose is to provide a new source of funds for projects of public relevance, and at the same time to curtail the abuse of alcohol and tobacco in accordance with recent health research and its recommendations", Alanko said in description of the sin tax issue. New development projects are planned to be included in the Union Budget, including the recommencement of the Union Highway program with funds to be attained from the new vehicle tax system, and state-sponsored urban housing to account for growing needs of internal migration. The War Office has also submitted numerous budgetary increase requests, citing political uncertainty and the continuing Scanian regional tensions.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - As he received the high Danish honor of Order of Dannebrog from the Danish ambassador to Kalevala, Stateholder Marshal Joakim Häyhä lauded the continuing friendship between the Danish and Fennian peoples and expressed hope that this cooperation could take deeper forms during the following years. In honor of the Army Flag Day and his appointment as Marshal of Fennia, our leader Häyhä was bestowed with the high Danish honor by the crown of Fennia's one of most important foreign partners, and the gesture was met in kind with the appointment of Danish King Frederik III as Commander of the Union Order of the North Star. The Union Order of the North Star is a civil order issued to foreigners who have rendered great service to the Fennian Union or to the advancement of relations between Fennia and their homeland. Viljo Kuula, the Fennian ambassador to Danmark, is to present the award to King Frederik on Marshal Häyhä's behalf.

"The storms of international politics that we've sen as of late stand as proof of the need of the nations of Civilized Europe to collaborate against the common perils of Bolshevism and plutocratic imperialism", Marshal Häyhä proclaimed in a speech held upon receiving the award, "I remain confident that damming the advance of forces hostile to European civilization can be achieved, but only by cooperation between Civilized Europe. The way the Danish- Fennian relations have been conducted serves as an example of this." In addition, the Stateholder Marshal called for greater Fennian involvement with friendly powers, also encouraging the foreign friends of the Fennian Union to collaborate on their own. In particular, he encouraged the international community towards greater acceptance over the new national government in Saaremaa.

PYHÄ HENRIK - Army, Police maintain security efforts along the Loagu Border
Vigilance kept up in face of sporadic border clashes

As he met today with the heads of the Union Army, Military Police and Protected Territories Police in New Fennia, Governor-General Yrjö Hannula gave reassurances over the capability of the Union forces to defend the inviolability of the New Fennian border area in the wake of recent unrest to the Southeast. The Saaremaan Himyari territories of the Loagu Commonwealth have seen a continuing outbreak of civil order in the wake of recent events in Saaremaa itself, brought upon by separatist and Bolshevik forces which immediately seized the opportunity to incite unrest in Saaremaa's Himyari territories.

Hannula, also a four-lion General of the Union Army and head of the Army's Protected Territories Headquarters, said that Fennian forces would continue to ensure the safety of the border against the threat of uncontrolled armed bands attempting to make their way into New Fennia. "In communications with the Stateholder Marshal and the War Office they have authorized me to undertake any necessary measures to guarantee border security in the Protected Territories", General Hannula said in a press conference after a meeting discussing in particular the situation along the border. "We are prepared to repel any intrusions by bandits and Bolshevist saboteurs, even to the point of applying lethal force in defense of the citizenry of the Protected Territories", General Hannula said, referring to an intensification of border security measures in the area.

The emergence of nonstate armed bands in the Saaremaan Himyari territories - said by Army Central Intelligence sources to be controlled by separatist agitators and Bolsheviks with the possible backing of foreign powers - has led to the outbreak of occasional border clashes along the area. Most recently, four days ago an attempted border crossing by a group of armed black Himyaris of unknown origins was repelled by a patrol elements of the 19th Light Brigade, leading to the deaths of two Fennian soldiers and the confirmed killings of at least eight assailants. Three members of 19th Light - nicknamed "Helismaa's Own" for their role in the Tribal Pacification - were commended with Medals of Bravery as a result of the action.

The Protected Territories Headquarters has amended regular border elements with flight patrols by Air Force aircraft as well as elements of the regular Land Forces, the Mounted Military Police and Civil Guard volunteer detachments in areas adjacent to the border. Additionally, Navy and Coast Guard elements have stepped up patrols in the Southeastern reaches of the New Fennian waters. Rumors of an impending limited call-up of reservists in New Fennia were not commented upon by General Hannula.

Meanwhile, Saaremaan head of state Marshal Miihkel Väinö is due to visit Kalevala as an official guest of Marshal Häyhä. Foreign Minister Kauko Vannas has confirmed that discussing the situation in Saaremaan Himyari holdings was in the agenda of the meeting, reiterating that the Saaremaans continued to enjoy the full political backing of the Fennian Union in recognition of their legitimate territorial claims in Himyar, and that the Union remained in "absolute condemnation of the bolshevik and separatist saboteurs attempting to incite unrest and conflict in the Saaremaan holdings". War Minister Grand Admiral Mikael Aminoff will also take part in hosting Marshal Väinö in Kalevala.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Remarks by the unrecognized Ostveg government calling Fennia a threat to Scanian peace were met equally by Stateholder Marshal Häyhä as he appeared today before the Union Congress. Visiting Cantignia, Chancellor Bakken continued her policy of anti-Fennian agitation by describing the Union as a threat to Scanian peace aiming for regional domination, already prompting counter-remarks on behalf of Foreign Minister Kauko Vannas in a message sent to Kristiania. The historically tense nature of Fennian-Norse relations, owing to Norse irredentism targeting the Union constituent of Malminmaa, have recently been increased by several incidents such as a Kristiania-sponsored domestic propaganda campaign against the Fennian government and the belligerent renewal of the Malminmaa dispute that has been put forward by Chancellor Bakken since the establishment of her government.

"The Union continues to extend a hand of peace, but at the same time we recognize that Bakken and the Norse have their hands on the pommels of their swords", Häyhä said in a speech to the Union Congress, "And should they draw those swords and raise them against the Fennian people, we will draw ours and meet them in kind." "The massive campaign of political propaganda by Bakken and her cronies does not conceal from an astute observer the fact that Bakkenite jingoism and irredentism is a distraction for the Norse people away from domestic politics, and that Bakken herself is the regional aggressor with her rampant policies of jingoism and belligerence", the Stateholder Marshal continued. In addition to his speech, he announced additional plans for the renewal of Union's Northern defenses in the face of Kristiania's aggressive behavior as well as planned measures to combat Norse sedition in Malminmaa in the aftermath of the Ilkka Statue Bombing. The perpetrators of that crime are due to go on trial next week.

 - KALEVALA/VESPER - International success for the 1952 All-Fennian winner Kalevalan Jalkapallokerho continues as the team triumphed over Parthava's Red Steel Dara in the second round of their competitive group, achieving a 3-2 overtime victory after an extremely tight and interesting game in Fairfield, Cantignia. Two minutes into extra time, KJK striker Kari Juntura managed a brilliant shot into the goal's upper left corner from the outskirts of the penalty zone, leading to KJK victory in the game and their continuation into the next round of the One World Series. Earlier during the first half, Juntura had scored the first KJK goal during the match, speeding past Red Steel defenders to score. The second Fennian goal during the match was delivered by winger Aleksi Karppinen, who also passed the ball to Juntura for his decisive goal of the game.

Earlier, Kalevalan Jalkapallokerho prevailed over the Vangalan Kilkila Rebels in a 2-1 victory also gained in Fairfield. Vesa Lainio, our ambassador to Vesper, was present during the games and gave his personal congratulations to the KJK team on behalf of their continuing victories in the One World Series. He also handed congratulatory telegrams from the Stateholder Marshal and the leadership of the city of Kalevala. Union Public Radio announcers present in Cantignia have given live commentary of the KJK matches to the Fennian audiences, drawing in estimated record amounts of listeners to the UPR frequencies.

KALEVALA - Stateholder Marshal and the Union Congress approve the 1953-1954 Budget
Automobile and sin taxes, National Labor Service, supplementary War Office funds among others

In its Saturday session, the Union Congress approved the proposition for the 1953-1954 Union Budget, which was subsequently ratified by Stateholder Marshal Häyhä with the orders to the Ministerial Offices to begin the full implementation of the new budget. The monetary framework of Fennian policy for the forthcoming year was approved as one of the last major legistlative pieces before the commencement of the Union Congress holidays at the start of the Midsummer festivities.

The introduction of certain new taxes will be included in the 1953-1954 Budget, most importantly the Motor Vehicle Tax and the imposition of new sin taxes on alcohol and tobacco. The new motor vehicle tax is being lauded by the Treasury and Transportation Offices as an important reform, for the system of universal taxation of registered automobiles, motorcycles and mopeds - except for certain categories of production and government vehicles - will also mean the elimination of the systems of toll booths used along the Union Highway system as well as certain highways, bridges, tunnels and other throughfares maintained by Union constituents. Instead, the system of motor vehicle taxation will provide an equal basis of funding to the maintenance and development of the highways and other public transportation projects.

Additionally, sin taxes concerning alcohol and tobacco will be established in response to the social woes caused by the abuse of such substances, and citing new research pointing to potential harms of smoking. Tobacco products will see an introduction of a 10% sin tax in Fennia Proper, while alcoholic drinks will be taxed in amounts between 5 and 15 percents depending on their alcohol content - 5% for mild beer, 10% for heavy beers and wines and 15% for actual liquor. The introduction of such taxation has been met with commendation on behalf of the Fennian Church and various temperance organizations.

Also, the national government announced plans to reduce unemployment through the creation of a new National Labor Service, which would offer placement to various public works projects and companies and public institutions acting in national interest, targeting unemployed Fennians also not undergoing any education. The Labor Service will be subordinate to the National Development Office, which has been ordered to commence the implementation of the program. Also, the budget provides funds for development including the continuing Union Highway program, plans of affordable urban mass construction as well as an Information Office "People's Television" program to commission cheaper and more accessible television sets and increase the amounts of public TV viewing rooms.

In response to tensions along our Northern border and the continued threats made by the Norse against the Union, the War Office managed to pass supplementary military funding in order to accelerate the pace of the Five-Year Army Reform in a move Stateholder Marshal Häyhä described as an "important advancement in ensuring the security of the Fennian nation against these descendants of the Vikings who seem not to have given up the old raiding ways." Also, the Interior Office attained funding for the establishment of new law enforcement organs. The Union Highway Police will take over in highway policing from constituent police forces, in addition to acting as an Union- level police reserve, while the Vice Police and some elements of Customs and Excise will form a new Central Criminal Police in an effort to improve Fennian internal security.

MALMINLINNA, MALMINMAA - Ilkka Statue bombers found guilty of all charges and executed by gunshot
Charges included treason and insurrectionary acts

Today justice was meted to the two Norse separatist brothers - Olof and Axel Cronberg - responsible for bombing the rider statue of General Johannes Ilkka, one of the major heroes of the Unification Wars and the Fennian-Agder War, as the Malminmaa Union Court found the two guilty of all charges brought forward by the prosecution. While the most serious of the charges were high treason and insurrectionary acts, the two were also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder pertaining to their plan to murder Grand Admiral Mikael Aminoff on his visit to Malminlinna, as well as charges including gross destruction of property, firearms and explosives offenses and sedition.

As treason and insurrection are capital crimes by Union Criminal Code, Axel and Olof Cronberg were executed in the Malminlinna Union Prison several hours after being found guilty by the court. In a press conference held in Kalevala, Interior Minister Taneli Välimaa said that the executions had occurred by means of single gunshots fired to the back of the head by a randomly selected prison officer, and that the Cronbergs had been allowed last meals of their preference as well as family visits and denominational religious counseling before their sentences had been carried out. Their bodies were subsequently turned over to their next of kin for burial.

Evidence against the Cronbergs for their guilt in the crimes they were accused of, as well as their separatist ideology and plans to commit further criminal acts against the Fennian people and the Union government, was overwhelming. Before the trial, the Cronbergs had in Security Department interrogation confessed to blowing up the Ilkka Statue as well as plotting the murder of Grand Admiral Aminoff, and had described their motive as a plan to incite an armed campaign for the incorporation of Malminmaa under Kristiania's rule. Additionally, prosecutors brought forward strong material evidence, including explosives and guns intended to be carried out in the Aminoff assassination scheme, as well as documents detailing plans for the bombing and the unrealized assassination attempt against Grand Admiral Aminoff and several other bombing targets the Cronbergs had considered before choosing the Ilkka Statue.

"It's my hope that this will send a strong signal to the internal traitors and enemies of the Fennian people, as well as foreigners considering to back them", Interior Minister Välimaa said to assembled Fennian reporters, "That treason and murder shall not be tolerated in the Fennian Union, and that the perpetrators of such harsh crimes shall meet equally harsh justice." Välimaa said though the Security Department and local police forces remained perfectly competent in overcoming any internal threats to the security and welfare of the Fennian people, new measures would be enacted to deliver more effective internal defense from the threats instigated by separatist and Red forces in our midst.

We congratulate the Fennian authorities for their exercise in justice in a time when much of the world is seeing anarchist movements attempting to bring down authorized and legal institutions.

Reputable news - 1898-1953 - Morning edition five Union Marks, Evening edition eight Union Marks

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The national government is set on a policy of strenghtening Fennian diplomatic relations with friendly like-minded powers, in the wake of Stateholder Marshal Häyhä hosting the heads of state of Saaremaa and Sikandara on official visits to Kalevala this month. Marshal Miihkel Väinö and Emperor Mir Bahadur of Saaremaa and Sikandara respectively were received by Häyhä and other Fennian leaders recently, with the visits described as fruitful by the Chancellery of the Stateholder. "The Union government remains committed to maintenance of good relations and strenghtening cooperation with our friends, especially in the face of our common enemies", Marshal Häyhä said today before the Union Congress. "The Fennian union needs to adopt a greater international role with the help and cooperation of our global friends, in order to reinforce our common values of civilization and order", the Stateholder Marshal proclaimed to the assembly of Congressmen.

The recent visits to Kalevala come at a time when the Foreign Office has confirmed plans to adopt increasing overtures towards friendly nations in the Scanian littoral in particular, but also in broader Europe. "Saaremaa is the example of fruitful Fennian diplomacy in that we are now helping our kin to overcome their recent internal difficulties, even in the face of their admonishment and hostility in the face of plutocratic governments unable to accept that some are seeking other solutions to their questions than the pervasive dogma of hypercapitalism and poisonous individualism", Foreign Minister Kauko Vannas said in the same session of Union Congress. Vannas also spoke of the increasing need to develop Fennian relations with friendly European nations of shared values, mentioning not only the Saaremaans and the Sikandarans but also others including the Mezhist Union and the Kingdom of Danmark.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The boycott of Fennian tennis players of an international tennis tournament held in Unrecognized Ostveg has highlighted the issue of growing anti-Fennian discrimination in our Northern neighbor, largely helped by the vast anti-Fennian propaganda campaigns initiated by Chancellor Bakken and her regime. After discussion of the boycott in the Fennian sporting communities, the International Fennian Committee said in a public statement that anti-Fennian incidents and hostility among the Norse were reaching "intolerable levels", referring to a Foreign Office travel advisory against citizens planning to travel to Unrecognized Ostveg. "It is indeed best for the personal safety of the Fennian athletes vthat they stay away from that country, and travelling would've brought them into a country with a highly partial judicial and police system unable to defend them from attacks against them solely on the basis of nationality", Congressman Ahti Vienala, chairman of the International Fennian Committee said today to reporters of Kalevalan Sanomat.

The International Fennian Committee, an interest group maintaining awareness of the situation of Fennians living outside of the Fennian Union, is planning on releasing a report detailing incidents of abuse and violence targeted by the Auswegian Norse against Fennians in that country, as well as the growing anti-Fennian agitation by the Bakkenist regime. Congressman Vienala said that the Bakkenists were "heavily committed" to demonizing the Fennians in Auswegian internal politics and the press, to the point of presenting the Fennian people as subhumans and indirectly encouraging attacks against individual Fennian citizens and people of Fennian ethnicity. "With her agitation of a second war between the Fennians and the Norse and her propaganda, Chancellor Bakken has created an environment where more and more people in our Northern neighbor consider it perfectly acceptable to engage in acts of violence against legal and ethnic Fennians", Vienala said, referring to incidents of criminal attacks against Fennians in Unrecognized Ostveg he said would soon be publicized by the International Fennian Committee.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Counter-intelligence officers of the Security Department have conducted arrests of six suspected Carentanian spies and four Fennians believed to have acted in their assistance. The arrests took place this morning in dawn raids targeting two properties in Kalevala, resulting in the arrest of the suspects and the confiscation of firearms, unlicensed communications equipment and banned subversive materials. The persons arrested now remain in Security Department custody in an undisclosed location for interrogation and eventual prosecution on the charges of espionage, as well as treason for the Fennian citizens arrested. Treason and espionage are both capital offenses, so at the highest the people involved could be sentenced to death by the Higher Military Court which will eventually hear the case once preparations are concluded by the prosecution.

Colonel-General Matias Koskimaa, head of the Security Department, said that the arrested had been attempting to make contacts with undergorund Communist elements in Fennia Proper and to penetrate sensitive industrial and military installations in attempt of stealing Fennian technology for Carentanian gain. However, Colonel-General Koskimaa confirmed that no actual threat to Fennian security had materialized, these attempts having been successfully prevented by his officers. "Nevertheless, we will continue to exercise utmost vigilance in our search of traitors and Communist foes, and it is the duty of every Fennian to do the same to guarantee our security and wellbeing", Koskimaa stated to the Union Public Radio.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The Interior Office expects to be able to successfully conclude the recently initiated policing reform by the end of the year, with the newly established law enforcement organs set to be fully operational and amalgamated by December. Interior Minister Taneli Välimaa met yesterday with senior officers of the Union law enforcement services and those constituent services affected by the reforms, discussing the procedures for the establishment of reformed law enforcement approved in the 1953-1954 Union Budget. According to the reform plans, certain constituent- level highway and mobile patrol units are to be combined into a new Union Highway Police (Unionin Maantiepoliisi, UMP) with the dual role of highway traffic enforcement and police reserve duties, while the Union Vice Police will be combined with parts of the Customs and Excise Service to form a new Central Criminal Police (Unionin Keskusrikospoliisi, UKRP). According to Välimaa, the reform will increase the capabilities of the law enforcement to target new forms of crime and to provide more effective enforcement of the law and the protection of the Fennian people.

Interior Minister Välimaa said that the foundation of the KRP was to be a largely administrative process, with the necessarily personnel and equipment already existing within the agencies that will form the new organization. He said that the process of integrating the Highway Police into a single organization would take time due to the differing standards of personnel, equipment, training and operations that have been appliedby the various local services now to be incorporated into a single organization. The law enforcement reform is being hailed as a major success by the Union government, saying that the establishment of the KRP will grant the government increasing ability to tackle the "higher echelons of crime" while the Highway Police will improve safety along the Union Highways and other assorted inter-constituent roads. The KRP is to be an Union- wide organization, while the Highway Police will be restricted to Fennia Proper as the Protected Territories Police acts as its equivalent in New Fennia.

We request our ambassador to be granted contact to the arrested Carentanian citizens and will issue a public statement on the matter, once we have a full picture of the situation. At this point, the Workers' Republic of Carentania can only say with clarity that none of the arrested are involved in matters pertaining to Carentanian intelligence operations and that none of the arrested have acted on orders of the Carentanian government. Our government asks for copies of the charges raised against the group, including at least description of the evidence and witness reports, to be provided to our embassy.

Furthermore, the Workers' Republic of Carentania advises the Fennian authorities to treat the prisoners with dignity and according to international standards.

The Fennian Union

The six Carentanian citizens recently arrested under suspicion of espionage remain under custody of the Union Military Police in an undisclosed detainment unit pending trial. The Foreign Office has been notified by the responsible Military Police officers that sections of the Union Security Act, permitting restriction of communication and visitation rights for prisoners and investigative detainees due to reasons of national security, have been invoked in this affair. Thus, I wish to communicate that the request of visit by the Carentanian ambassador to Kalevala is being denied. Revision of the decided restricted visitation policy may take place at a later date prior to the possible trial.

Documentation related to the case and the investigation cannot be provided due to their classification as secret. However, upon the commencement of the trial the Union government will gladly provide the Carentanian embassy to Kalevala with a copy of the public portions of eventual prosecution and trial documentation regarding the six Carentanians currently held in investigative custody.

Her Majesty's Government finds the Kvenske findings in the issue of the Patriotic Statue Bombing trial to be illegitimate. The executions of the Cronbergs is deplorable, a severe unjust ruling to a people that are oppressed within the Vesterålen region. This severe lack of justice once again requires the Kingdom of Østveg to echo her calls for the recognition of the Austwegian people and their Kingdom by the Fennian Union in so that discussions for the lawful return of the Vesterålen region can commence.

It is the opinion of this Government that until such recognition takes place, no policy of détente can be agreed to by Her Majesty's Government.

Fennian Unioni
The Fennian Union

The vocal support that the Bakkenist regime of Unrecognized Ostveg has given to the terrorists and enemies of the state recently executed for their crimes goes a long way to prove the belligerent and hostile aims of Kristiania in its relations with the Fennian people. It is the belief of the Union government that the outspoken reaction of Kristiania to this affair has taken place not because of any concern over the realization of justice in Malminmaa - a concern which would be ill-founded in any case - but due to a Kristianian desire to see terror and violence reign in Malminmaa. Accordingly, attempts of Norse interventionism in internal Fennian affairs will not be tolerated and they will receive an appropriate and proportional response.

Furthermore, the Union government finds it rather tiresome to explain its stance over the continuation of its policy in regards to Unrecognized Ostveg. De jure any recognition of a polity claiming sovereignity over Fennian soil would also imply a recognition of that claim in itself, so the Union government is both from a legal and moral standpoint unable to extend any recognition to Unrecognized Ostveg until Chancellor Bakken renounces her policies of belligerence and conflict which carry the very real possibility of igniting Scania in flames of open war.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The War Office today announced that it had formally commissioned orders from the State Metal Factories and arms producers in the Mezhist Union in conclusion of the Universal Rifle development program, initiated to replace existing types of bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles as well as submachine guns with a new model of full-automatic service rifle. According to Colonel-General Rainer Lintuvaara, Army Quartermaster General, the State Metal Factories will produce a new Universal Rifle 55 as a standard issue weapon of the Fennian Union Army. Yleiskivääri 55 will eventually replace the 98, 40 and 47 series of rifles and 31 and 44 series of submachine guns in Union Army use. Lintuvaara said that the types to be replaced would initially be passed down to second-line and reserve units while they would eventually be completely replaced by the Universal Rifle, aside from certain specialist roles, and then passed down to law enforcement use or sold abroad. The Marine Corps will not be using YK55, instead adopting the Mezhist- made SzK 44 assault rifle for an equivalent role.

"The adoption of the Universal Rifle is a great advancement for our military, simplifying the supply chain and increasing the level of individual infantry firepower to levels previously inaccessible", Colonel-General Lintuvaara commented in the Kenttäharmaa military magazine. A new 7,62x51mm caliber will be adopted as part of the Universal Rifle program - aside from the Marine Corps - and a new general-purpose machine gun to enter service is slated to use the same caliber. The War Office has released official statistics for the Universal Rifle, indicating a rate of fire of up to 700 rounds per minute, maximum effective range of 400-600 meters, magazine capacity of thirty and a weight of around four kilograms. Accordingly, the adoption of the weapon represents a significant advancement owing to a higher rate of fire. The move follows the adoption of similar assault and battle rifles in other European countries, most notably the Mezhist Union.

 - YRJÖNLINNA, WEST KALEVALA REPUBLIC - Union Congressman and Bishop of West Kalevala Mauno Havakka has confirmed that he will be seeking the position of Archbishop of the Fennian Evangelic Church in the July's Church Assembly, which will also see the stepping-down of current Archbishop Juhana Valkeala. Valkeala announced in May that he would be ending his six-year tenure as the head of the Evangelic Church, desiring to give up administrative functions in favor of ecclesiastical study and personal relaxation. Bishop Havakka is being considered a strong candidate of succession to the post of the most senior member of the Fennian clergy, owing to his vital role as the Bishop of West Kalevala and also as an important member of the National Unity Front and the Union Congress. Being appointed as Archbishop would mean that Havakka would need to vacate his seat in the Union Congress, which in turn would pass down to his Deputy Congresswoman Jaana Salonius for the duration of this term of Union Congress.

In an interview with the Salvation Radio, the official radio station of the Fennian Evangelic Church, Havakka expressed his interest in filling the soon-ree seat of the Archbishop of Pietari. "As Archbishop Valkeala ends his distinguished tenure as the head of our Church, I would be honored were the Church Assembly elect me as his replacement, and I would continue his work in maintaining the Evangelic Church as a bulwark of Fennian identity and the propagation of Christian morals among our society", Havakka stated. He went on to elaborate on his plans on developing the Church in the future, calling for an increased role of the Fennian Mission in education and welfare programs as well as international proselytism and for the domestic role of the Church as a supporter of law, order and Christian morality to continue.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The most popular vacation season in the Union is starting with the traditional Midsummer festivities this weekend, with many Fennians having elected to start their annual vacations at this most important celebration of a Fennian summer. Indeed, the Union Highways and various inter-city train and bus services were filled to capacity today with people heading into the countryside to spend the Midsummer's Eve with friends and relatives, resulting in significant quieting even in the normally bristling major cities like Kalevala, Yrjönlinna and Kontula. The Midsummer was also celebrated in the Protected Territories primarily among the ethnic Fennians living there, who were responsible for introducing the Fennian tradition to the Himyari continent. Many are expected to spend their holidays with visits to their summer cottages as well as holiday resorts in Fennia Proper and the Protected Territories as well as abroad. In a manner telling of international tension, the amount of exit visas applied to Agderike for the vacation season have experienced a massive drop in the wake of the threats made by Chancellor Bakken against the Union and a Foreign Office- issued warning of the threat of anti-Fennian violence in the country. Instead, more and more people are favoring domestic travel.

Simultaneously, the Union Congress commenced a well-deserved four week holiday during which no legislative activity is being conducted, and the Congress is convened only under exceptional circumstances with the Stateholder Marshal and the Ministers solely responsible for decision-making under their designated powers. Meanwhile, police forces throughout the country, augmented by Suojeluskunta volunteers and the Mounted Military Police, deployed heavily to control the traffic and maintain order at the various Midsummer festivities organized in Fennian cities and towns including traditional bonfire events. Nationally, the Midsummer's Eve was described as relatively peaceful, with the incidents of breach of peace, vandalism and assaults being moderately more common than on a typical summer weekend. Most seriously, Kalevala police constables shot and killed a 42- year old man who had brandished a licensed hunting rifle at his neighbors while drunk and refused to give up his weapon to the police. A police spokesman said that use of force had been reasonable in the case and that there was no need to investigate the conduct of the constables involved.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - In the last session of Union Congress before the commencement of the legislative vacation, Stateholder Marshal Joakim Häyhä declared that the Fennian national government would press forward a "war against corruption, nepotism and ineptitude" as a consequence of the recent reform of civil service and regional administration. Marshal Häyhä referred to the recent introduction of an unified entrance examination affecting all members of the Civil Service including those in regional and municipal levels, saying that the administration intended to apply the testing procedure to all civil servants and to weed out those not suited to the responsible roles of the Civil Service. "This national government should not have people inclined to corruption and professional ineptitude, or even sedition and disloyalty to the Fennian people, within its Civil Service", Häyhä proclaimed, vowing to cleanse such individuals from the administration. This comes in line with the objectives the national government stated for its recent reforms of the civil service, promising to improve fairness and efficiency in public administration throughout the Union.

The new examination tests would be compulsory for even the current employees of the Civil Service, a procedure declared as a necessity to weed out inappropriate elements from public office. In addition to examining professional competency and moral backbone, the examination tests aim to identify and root out sympathizers of communist groups and other seditionist movements. Additionally, an overall campaign to improve standards of service and procedure in the public services is being commenced by the Justice Office. While introduction of obligatory membership in the National Unity Front for all civil servants was proposed by NUF Party Secretary Johannes Mäki, the idea was refuted as unnecessary by the Stateholder Marshal, who stated that there were other ways available for the maintenance of loyalty and good conduct.

NEWS IN BRIEF

KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Young Fennian men born in 1935 will be called in October and November to report to their regional military offices as part of the annual military call-ups organized by the War Office. The first call-ups, organized in an alphabetical order by surname, commenced this week and processing the 1935 age group in preparation of their eventual military service is expected to last until the end of November. The call-up events will include medical evaluation and an interview with a draft board made up of military officers from each branch of service to determine the branch and unit of service for their conscript service, which usually occurs at the age of twenty and will last between 16 and 24 months depending on the branch of service and the attained level of training. After this the conscripts will remain in the reserve, eligible for call-up in the event of war, up to the age of 60 years. Conscripts may serve in any branch of the Union Army, aside from the Marine Corps which is entirely based on voluntary entrance.

In Kalevala, War Minister, Grand Admiral Mikael Aminoff visited the headquarters of the Guards Separate Armored Jäger Brigade - which is one of the call-up locations for Kalevalan youth - and spoke to the future conscripts emphasizing the importance of their role in maintaining the territorial integrity of the Union and the survival of the Fennian nation in itself. "As enemies beyond our borders loom and plot the demise of this great nation, the Fennian citizen-soldier shall stand in their way, impervious to any harm, and you shall walk so proudly in the paths of your ancestors throughout Fennian history", Grand Admiral Aminoff spoke to young men gathered in the call-up session. Aminoff also said that while, unfortunately, some would have to be excluded from service due to reasons of "poor fitness or un-Fennian characteristics unsuited to a soldier and a Fennian", his overall impression of the soon-to-be conscripts was positive and that he was confident that they'd be fit to defend the Union in the future.

We find ourselves appalled and most suspicious of the recent northern row of crackdowns against Christian Communities in Boganhem and the Fennian Union. As a conservative nation we expect more out of our Fennian Friends, for it is the duty of traditionalists to uphold the cornerstones of faith within civilization. It will be atheism, mark our words, that undermines Fennian values until its nation and people are ripe for the taking by Communists, Post-Delegationists, or whichever new Godless terror rises to challenge us next.

The Fennian Union

On behalf of the Union government I would like to note to the Cantignian Christendom Society that the continued actions on behalf of the Protected Territories Police and the Union Military Police and targeted against the cult calling itself the "Children of Christ" have occurred owing to that group's persistent record of blasphemy as well as sedition and incitement of civil unrest within the Protected Territories of New Fennia. For this reason, the Protected Territories administration in 1946 took measures to formally ban that cult owing to violations of the blasphemy statutes of the Protected Territories Criminal Code, as well as the Union Sedition Act and the Union Internal Security Act.

The Fennian Union government in itself remains committed to the maintenance of the Fennian Evangelic Church and its good relations with the Union government as a pillar of our governance, and as a pillar of Fennian society in itself. However, legitimate Christian denominations should not be confused with dangerous cults not only engaged in blasphemy, perversion of religion and corruption of their members, but in activities directed against the Fennian nation and the administration in the Protected Territories.
