CONTINENTAL REPUBLIC OF SYLVANIA

If the Fennian and their government was truly peaceful, then Fennia would recognize Ostveg as a legitimate nation and government. However, since the Fennian government has made recognition difficult by stipulating that Ostveg end their claim upon Vesteralen before gaining recognition, an issue which should be discussed by the two nations as equals, the words of the Stateholder General are as false as his peaceful endeavors. The Continental Republic of Sylvania sees the true martial nature of the Fennian and will not tolerate any violent moves against our Austwegian allies.

The Fennian Union

The Fennian national government has time upon time explained its stance over the question of the Fennian constituent of Malminmaa, and the moral and legal justifications for their retention as a portion of the Fennian Union, as well as the moral and legal ramifications in recognizing a polity in itself claimant to territories constituting a part of the Union.

The Sylvanian government dares to accuse the Union of militarism and aggression even while they have taken upon themselves to support the fledgling newest incarnation of the Norse in European geopolitics, whom themselves have harassed the Union with territorial demands. That Sylvania has given its quiet approval to Norse irredentism in its interaction with the self-proclaimed Agder successor of Ostveg and the Fennian Union casts Sylvanian foreign policy and its accusations against the Union into a very dubious light.

Once again, Charleroi continues its policy of thoroughly self-aware and self-righteous hypocrisy, neglecting facts and the common good in favor of brinkmanship apparently intended to draw the Norse closer to their camp. Or, alternatively, to distract the Sylvanian electorate from domestic affairs by a conflict which the Sylvanians seem to be bent on engineering with whatever foreign power giving them the flimsiest excuse.

Regards,
His Excellency General Joakim Häyhä,
Stateholder of the Union,
Commander-in-Chief of the Union Army

Reputable news - 1898-1953 - Morning edition five Union Marks, Evening edition eight Union Marks

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - At the conclusion of the graduate examinations of lyceums throughout the Fennian Union, the most accomplished abiturients of the year were again invited to the National Palace to be commended personally by the Stateholder General through the issuance of the Union Youth Medal. With travel and accommodation paid in full by the Education Office for them and their parents, the most successful graduates of the lyceum class of 1953 from each of the Union constituents met today with General Häyhä in Kalevala, and will continue their weekend tour of the capital with guided visits to various Kalevalan locations. In the Protected Territories, the most distinguished lyceum graduates will be invited to a similar award ceremony in Pyhä Henrik hosted by Governor-General Yrjö Hannula.

Since 1941, the Union government has traditionally awarded each year's most accomplished lyceum graduates with the Union Youth Medal, an university tuition and a weekend's stay in the Union capital of Kalevala. Similar ceremonies have been adopted by the constituent governments, while paraller award ceremonies of the National Unity Front will be held for accomplished youth holding party membership. "The Union sees it as a matter of honor to recognize the achievements of the finest of the young generation of the Fennian nation, and to encourage future achievement from you", General Häyhä said in a speech to his young guests, encouraging them to pursue further studies at the Fennian universities in order to contribute to the national advancement of the Fennian people in politics, arts, sciences and the economics.

 - MALMINLINNA, MALMINMAA - In a most heinous act of terror and sabotage, the rider statue of General Johannes Ilkka (1821-1897) was destroyed at around midnight by a bomb detonation. Though no human casualties occurred as a result of the explosion, the base of the statue was totally destroyed whilst the statue itself suffered damage described as serious by municipal officials in Malminlinna. The statue, erected in 1898 in memory of one of the leading pro-Unification generals in the Fennian Unification Wars and the 1873-1875 Agder-Fennian War, was a prominent landmark of Malminmaa's territorial capital, dominating the National Unification Square in the downtown of the city. The blast also blew off windows in buildings adjacent to the square, including the Malminlinna University Library and the Malminlinna City Hall.

An investigation of the incident is underway, and the Security Department is in particular interested in eyewitness reports of a black-wearing man of a medium size seen fleeing the scene on foot shortly after the explosion. The possibility of Norse separatists being involved in the attack is being investigated, though the involvement of underground Communists has not been ruled out either. In a statement released this morning, Information Minister Kaarlo Nurmi denounced the attack against what he described as a "national symbol and a symbol of the sacrifices made for the Fennian unification." "The bandits, cowards and savages responsible for this crime will be found and they will face the harshest justice legally possible in the Union", Nurmi said in a statement released in the Union Public Radio.

I have been instructed by the Foreign Office to convey the highest disappointment and criticism regarding the proliferation of anti-Fennian propaganda within the former Kingdom of Agderike, and the demand of the Union government for the immediate cessation and removal of such propaganda by the administration in these territories.

It is highly disappointing that Kristiania has elected to renew its territorial irredentism with propaganda seeking to misrepresent the policy and political aims of the Fennian national government and to defame the person of His Excellency General Joakim Häyhä, the Stateholder of the Union. That Kristiania now seems bent on rallying popular support for these irredentist campaigns and its attempts to generate conflict with the Fennian nation is highly disconcerting for the future of Scania as a whole.

Mr. Toivo Salonius,

Reputable news - 1898-1953 - Morning edition five Union Marks, Evening edition eight Union Marks

EDITORIAL: DO THE NORSEMEN WANT WAR?

This week, the already tumultous relations between the Fennian Union and its Norse neighbors to the North were brought to a further shock by the commencement of a massive anti-Fennian propaganda campaign by Kristiania in their streets and the Norse national press. The defamation posters spread with funding from Agderike's claimant successor government were instantly met with the appropriate protests and complaints from our Interests Office in Kristiania, but to no avail as the Bakken camp quickly stated that they had no intention of ceasing their campaign of widespread populist, anti-Fennian militarist agitation now taking place in the Norse cities.

The significance of this latest event did not go unnoticed in Kalevala. The provocation of an international confrontation in the interests of domestic politics is a classic political device that now has been utilized by Chancellor Bakken and her compatriots. It's appropriate to remember that the Norse themselves are still recovering from a civil conflict and that Bakken continues to be in the process of solidifying her administration. The incorrect portrayal of the Fennian national government as a regional aggressor and a threat to the Norse people seems to have been seized by Kristiania for this purpose. By a supposed foreign threat of largely their own engineering - let's remember that it are the Norse themselves claiming a part of Fennian territory and now engaging in concerted anti-Fennian propaganda - Chancellor Bakken apparently seeks to divert the attentions of the Norse electorate away from domestic political issues awaiting solution in the wake of the Agder Succession Crisis.

"The provocation of an international confrontation in the interests of domestic politics is a classic political device that now has been utilized by Chancellor Bakken and her compatriots...let's remember that it are the Norse themselves claiming a part of Fennian territory and now engaging in concerted anti-Fennian propaganda"

The commencement of the Norse poster campaign in a time where Fennian-Norse relations are already at their lowest since the Fennian-Agder War also appears to bear the tell-tale signs of a classical act of provocation. It is a rather rare event in European diplomatic relations where a country deliberately aims to give its citizens so directly the message of a neighbor being a potential aggressor, even to the point of displaying imaginary Fennian bombers over their cities, and where a country so directly seeks to defame the person of a foreign head of government. The tone of these posters appears to be deliberately intended to provoke a response from Kalevala. It is likely that Bakken was expecting that response to be of a such magnitude that it would've reinforced Kristiania's perception of the Union as an aggressor. Obviously, this provocation failed as calm heads prevailed at the National Palace and the Foreign Office.

The week's other major event in Fennian-Norse relations was Kristiania's apparent reaction to international reports of the War Office's intent to reinforce the Häyhä Line. Norse media in itself suggested that the commissioning of the aforementioned propaganda was a response to those reports, and that Bakken was reacting to some "threat" posed by these installations. This also evoked a response from the Union government, as War Minister Aminoff astutely pointed out that the Häyhä Line was a defensive system intended against border violations and Norse invasion attempts and that the reports of such border reinforcement mainly pointed out to the deployment of additional land mines.

Land mines and fortresses are by definition - as Admiral Aminoff stated - defensive systems. It is interesting that there appears to be a consensus among the Norse press that Chancellor Bakken feels outrightly threatened by the very existence of the Häyhä Line, erected by the Stateholder General exclipitly for the purpose of protecting Fennia from any Agder attempt to solve the Malminmaa issue through armed force. Thus, the inevitable question needs to be asked: Does Chancellor Bakken now plan to wage an offensive war against the Fennian Union?

"War Minister Aminoff astutely pointed out that the Häyhä Line was a defensive system intended against border violations and Norse invasion attempts and that the reports of such border reinforcement mainly pointed out to the deployment of additional land mines...Thus, the inevitable question needs to be asked: Does Chancellor Bakken now plan to wage an offensive war against the Fennian Union?"

By the very least, the vocality with which Kristiania has maintained the Malminmaa issue in the headlines appears to point out that the historical question of Fennian-Norse relations has been seized by Chancellor Bakken as a major political device. The renewed territorial demands from Kristiania and the Norse stubborness to refuse from discussion of the Maiminmaa issue paint a concerning image over the way Kristiania now intends to conduct itself in international affairs. Equally concerning is the concerted campaign of anti-Fennian propaganda, as if intended to drum up popular support for escalation of the ongoing Fennian-Norse disputes on behalf of Kristiania and a possible attempt by Chancellor Bakken to wage an offensive war against the Fennian Union.

His Excellency the Stateholder General and the Foreign Office have conducted themselves in a most diplomatic and peaceful manner over the course of this renewed dispute, and will likely continue to do so. It is reassuring to know that General Häyhä is intent on peace and remaining above the lowly provocations made by Kristiania against the Union, but at the same time we are confident that they have not forgotten the old Tiburan wisdom taught to every generation of Fennian soldiers since the foundation of the Union: If you want peace, prepare for war.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - HANKO, GRAND DUCHY OF UUSIMAA - Leading entertainment musician and songwriter Yrjö Malminen will represent Fennia in the upcoming Eurovision 1953 contest. Malminen, with his song Heili Karjalasta (Translation: Woman/wife from Karjala) was chosen as the Fennian representative and the victor of the All-Fennian Music Tournament. Hosted in Hanko, the 1953 Music Tournament was significant in that for the first time it was broadcast live in Union Public Radio's television channels, complementing the highly popular radio broadcasts of the annual competition organized by the Information Office. Information Minister Kaarlo Nurmi was at the stage to personally congratulate Malminen upon his victory, The award consisting of a medal, a trophy and several thousand Fennian marks was handed over to Malminen by Nurmi amidst applause from a fully-packed Hangonniemi Concert Hall.

"I feel naturally honored by this win and the opportunity to represent Fennia and Fennian culture at an international level", Malminen said as he was interviewed by the Union Public Radio after being announced the winner of Music Tournament 1953. One of the most popular artists in Fennia in the field of light entertainment music, Malminen with his previous hits such as Malminmaan Aallot and Särkynyt Onni has also acted in several movies and is a member of the Naval Reservist Orchestra. In 1948, Stateholder General Häyhä granted Malminen the Fennian Cultural Medal for repeated achievement in the fields of Fennian entertainment music and film.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Transportation Minister Kyösti Sarkola today released details for the creation of a new Automobile and Motorcycle Tax - colloqually known as Vehicle Tax - as part of the Union government's plans for the 1953-1954 Budget. The Transportation and Treasury Offices intend to propose annual taxation for all registered motor vehicles within Fennia Proper. Minister Sarkola described the steadily increasing numbers of private vehicles and the need to accommodate for various related government programs, such as the Union Highways and road policing, as the reason for the decision to adopt the Vehicle Tax during this year's budget negotiations. Sarkola said that upon the enacting of the vehicle tax by the end of the year, vehicle owners would be required to get tax discs to their license plates to prove that they've paid their taxes in time. Using a motor vehicle without the appropriate taxation would be punishable by confiscation of the vehicle, criminal penalties for tax fraud and a responsibility to pay back the said tax money.

Significantly, the creation of the Vehicle Tax will for the most part mean an ending to the existence of toll booths along Union and regional highways. Used previously to attain funds for road maintenance, the toll booths have been criticized for creating traffic jams and slowing down the general flow of traffic in the road network in addition to the nonstandard levels of toll fees in different Union constituents. From now on, an unified Vehicle Tax administered by the Transportation Office will guarantee equality in this regard. Tax exemptions would be made for cars owned by public services and the Fennian Evangelic Church, engineering vehicles, private taxis and vehicles used for the purposes of public transportation.

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Citing an increased amount of damage caused by industrial fires and theft, the Fennian Association of Insurers today announced the foundation of a joint company called Fennian Teollisuuden Vartiointi or Fennian Industrial Security to offer security services to companies insured by member companies of the Union's primary advocacy group for insurance companies. Former Kalevala Police Commissioner Mikael Laurila, chosen as the chief executive officer of the new company, said to Kalevalan Sanomat that his aim was to revolutionarize the provision of private guarding in Fennia through the development of unified standards of training and leadership based on the law enforcement experience possessed by Laurila and several other retired police officers already appointed to work as part of the FTV.

Currently, a small number of companies offer such guarding services within Fennia Proper regulated by the 1951 Guarding Act. They are, however, mostly responsible for the protected transport of money and other valuable items at the employ of Fennian banks. For the most part, industrial and other guarding has historically been handled by companies with their own guard personnel while in Protected Territories limited police powers have been issued to personnel in private companies responsible for the operation of services such as railroads and mining.

MALMINLINNA, MALMINMAA - Two Norse Fennians arrested by lawmen for the Ilkka Statue Bombing
Plot against War Minister Aminoff also uncovered

Nearly a week following the bombing of General Johannes Ilkka's rider statue in Malminlinna's National Unification Square, the Security Department today announced that it may now have the culprits of that act of terror in custody. According to Major General Kristian Paasonen, head of Malminmaa-Petsamo TuOs, two Fennian citizens of Norse ethnicity were arrested last night by his officers together with uniformed personnel of the Mounted Military Police in the course of a raid on a private apartment in Malminlinna.

The arrested, identified as Olof and Axel Cronberg - brothers 29 and 26 of age respectively - have confessed to the crime of bombing the Ilkka statue using dynamite stolen by Olof Cronberg from the warehouse of a mine where he had been working. The authorities were led to the tracks of this pair of saboteurs by a mining company foreman, who had reported the dynamite theft to the Malminmaa Police which was already in the process of assisting Union authorities in investigating the statue bombing. In the course of the raid, explosives that were found to have been originated from the said mining company were discovered as well as banned Norse separatist literature and unlicensed firearms including two pistols and a bolt-action rifle.

Alarmingly, notes and maps indicating a plan to murder the Union War Minister, Admiral Mikael Aminoff, were also discovered in the apartment. The criminals intended to carry out their act of assassination during an unspecified public appearance by Admiral Aminoff in Malminlinna. Aminoff is currently in the process of touring military units in Northern Fennia, and was in Malminlinna at the time of the bombing. War Office spokesmen indicated that the discovery had been taken into account by Aminoff's security personnel, but that he wished to continue his schedule as a sign of opposition to the aims espoused by these separatist assassins.

In the course of their interrogation, the Cronberg brothers admitted that their motive for the statue bombing and the planned assassination of War Minister Aminoff was to incite violent Norse resistance against the Fennian Union and in favor of Malminmaa's incorporation into the unrecognized Kingdom of Ostveg. The self-described "Auswegian loyalists" described the recent war of words between Kalevala and Kristiania as inspiration to go through with their plan. Though rumors are abound in Malminmaa that the men were supported by Kristiania's agents, or perhaps were foreign agents themselves, the Military Police has refuted these claims and stated that the pair was acting alone in their most ignoble and treasonous offenses. However, an investigation into possible additional culprits is continuing.

The culprits were remanded into Military Police custody pending charges for treason, insurrectionary acts, conspiracy to commit murder, gross destruction of property, sedition and firearms and explosives offenses. Due to be tried at the Union Court of Malminmaa pending the completion of a Military Police investigation, the Cronbergs could be sentenced to death as treason and insurrectionary acts constitute a capital offense in the Fennian criminal code. From Kalevala, Stateholder General Häyhä expressed his congratulations to the lawmen involved and imploring a "highest possible penalty to these assassin-traitors of the Fennian people."

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - His Excellency the Stateholder General has relayed his wishes of good luck to Fennians partaking to high-level European competitions in football and chess respectively with the commencement of the One World Series of Football and the announced entrance of two Fennians to chess tournaments organized by the Europan Chess Federation. In the One World Series of 1953, held in Cantignia, Fennia will be represented by Kalevalan Jalkapallokerho, the 1952 winner of the All-Fennian Football League. KJK is currently leading the All-Fennian season of 1953, which commenced in April and is set to continue until September with the exception of the traditional summer break that also coincides with the One World Series. Interviewed by Urheilun Kuvalehti, KJK's head coach Antero Liimatta expressed confidence in his team and the belief that their steady improvement during the reecent years would pose a serious challenge to any of the rival teams, representing leading football clubs from a number of European countries. Last year, Carentania's Red Flag Cazma emerged as a winner of the series.

In chess, the All-Fennian Chess Association today announced its two registered contestants to the European Chess Federation's soon-to-commence series of chess tournaments. Kristoffer Lainio-Steinbeck and Johannes Syrjälä, both multiple champions of various domestic Fennian chess tournaments (Syrjälä is also one of the Fennian chess grandmasters) will represent the Fennian chess community in the ECF tournaments.

"Our leading sportsmen and competitors are also the representatives of the Fennians as a whole on the international stage, and set an example to the Fennian people for their dedication to their chosen disciplines", General Häyhä said as he visited the KJK's home arena Kalevala Union Stadium. He underlined the importance of organized competitive sporting and games as an "example of the spirit of achievement and merit also included in the values of the National Unity Front and the Fennian nation itself" and also noted the importance of such successful contestants setting a positive example to the Fennian youth.

 - UUSI MALMINLINNA, PROTECTED TERRITORIES - Authorities in the Southern Territory have suspended the local leadership of the Aguju Tribal Reserve in response to revelations of their active participation in the continuation of various practices of forced marriage exercised as part of Aguju tribal customs. The Tribal Reserve's chieftain Djibo Saibou was arrested in the reserve capital of Madoua by officers of the Mounted Military Police after Southern Sub-Governor Vilho Anttila ordered his suspension citing deliberate failure in maintaining Protected Territories legistlation within the Aguju Tribal Reserve. The appointment of new local leadership is to take place under the direction of Sub-Governor Anttila by the end of June, pending a broad review over the continuation of forced marriage practices in the area and the involvement of local Aguju leaders in permitting their condition. The administrative scandal was revealed after last week's arrest by the Protected Territories Police of several elders of the Aguju Umaru clan for negotiating a marriage between a 15- year old boy and an 12- year old girl in Madoua.

Saibou, as well as possibly other tribal reserve officials, will now face charges for professional negligence specifically in relation to implementing the 1898 Marriage Act. The said legal act forbids forced and arranged marriages throughout the Protected Territories. "Forced marriage as a custom is the descendant of dark tribal days, a habit that not only is an affront to the Christian institution of marriage in itself but also one that strips young boys and girls of their ability to decide on such an important event on their own accord, and a habit we are committed to eradicating throughout New Fennia", Sub-Governor Anttila said in a statement released to Uuden Fennian Päivälehti, the leading newspaper in New Fennia. Though the 1898 Marriage Act criminalized forced and arranged marriages and implemented the 18-year age of consent applied in Fennia Proper, forced marriages are believed to be still practiced especially in the tribal reserves and among the Aguju community particularly prominent in the custom.

The High Kingdom of Ivernia applauds the noble actions of the introduction of civilization to the more stubbornly traditionalist natives of New Fennia. An endeavour Ivernia also commits to in the southern regions of Ivernian Himyar - it is good to see that it does not work alone along this coast.

The Fennian Union has the full support of the High Kingdom of Ivernia in these actions.

I wish to convey the thanks of the administration of the Protected Territories for affirmations of support to the policy the administration has implemented in those areas. Though the autonomous context of the Tribal Reserves has the continued respect of the Protected Territories administration, it is the administration's right and duty to intervene in elimination of morally objectionable habits and cultural standards or whenever such autonomy is abused to contravene broader Union and Protected Territories legistlation.

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - The Interior Office has denied speculation about the existence of organized Norse separatist terrorism in Malminmaa in the wake of the arrest of two Norsemen - the so-called Cronberg brothers - for their part in bombing the Johannes Ilkka Statue of Malminlinna and plotting the assassination of War Minister Mikael Aminoff during his visit to the city. Yesterday before the Union Congress, Interior Minister Taneli Välimaa addressed issues including the recent events in Malminlinna. "Though the investigation is still underway, we have no indication that this incident was anything other than a work of a couple of misguided traitor spurned into their violent misdeeds by the futile dogma of separatism", Interior Minister Välimaa said, "However, continued vigilance will naturally be maintained in case such anti-Fennian forces would further manifest themselves." Välimaa underlined Kalevala's commitment to bringing a swift end and a speedy delivery of justice to any forces attempting to act against Fennian national unity in favor of what he characterized as "forces of sedition and treason." Having confessed to the statue bombing and the plot against War Minister Aminoff, the culprits of those crimes are now in custody of the Military Police and await a trial in Union courts.

Interior Minister Välimaa affirmed that the Union would remain vigilant against any seditionist and insurrectionist elements attempting to sow discord in the midst of the Fennian people. He referenced to several successful actions that had been recently undertaken by the Security Department in Malminmaa, resulting in the confiscation of separatist materials and the dismantlement of "unorganized cells of traitors and seditionists." However, Välimaa reminded, that the more obvious threat to the Fennian people came from underground Communist elements still at large in the midst of the Fennian people. "The continued effectiviness of the Union Army in preventing and dissuading military threats on behalf of the Communist governments could, with likelihood, increase their desire to commit anti-Fennian sabotage actions and to sow sedition to Fennian society", the Interior Minister concluded and called for continued popular vigilance against the reality of the internal Red threat.

 - YRJÖNLINNA, WEST KALEVALA REPUBLIC - The state-owned Aero airline company has reported a possible death of up to forty crewmen and passengers in the crash of one of its passenger aircraft into international waters, thirty kilometers south of the extent of recognized Fennian territory in the Thaumantic Ocean. The aircraft, a Fennair Model 208 - the passenger version of K-42 Muuli transport aircraft used by the Union Air Force - was reportedly on a scheduled flight of Air Route 62 from the Yrjönlinna International Airport through Fortaleza Real, Frescania to the Helismaa International Airport in Pyhä Henrik. According to the Civil Aviation Administration, the aircraft had radioed to Yrjönlinna air traffic control that it was experiencing an engine malfunction and returning towards Fennian soil to conduct an emergency landing. Shortly after that, all contact with the aircraft was lost. Aero sources have confirmed the presence of five crew members and 35 passengers, all Fennian citizens, aboard the missing plane.

A search and rescue operation is being conducted along the Fennian coast and in the area where the plane may have crashed, being headed by the Union Coast Guard with assistance from volunteer maritime rescue associations and Union Navy elements including several maritime patrol aircraft. Spokesmen of the Southwestern Coast Guard area declined to comment, saying that "it was too early to ascertain the possibility of survivors", even though the Coast Guard admitted that the crash had taken place in an area where the sea depth is averaging at about hundred meters. The Civil Aviation Administration has commenced efforts to contact the next of kin of those aboard the missing plane.

Public Statement

The story of the Cronberg brothers has reached the ears and eyes of the Austwegian nation. Her Majesty's Government is of the opinion that while heinous acts of terror are never to be commended, the curious case of the Cronbergs appears far too simple. The Nords of Fennia demand representation and proper respect for their faith. Here, they must now demand proper legal settlement for the Cronbergs who appear to lack the support of a legal system that would work in the favor of a speaker of Austwegian.

The Kingdom of Østveg will petition Kvenland for the fair treatment of the Cronbergs, and for their proper trial and legal equality as per the legal codes of Østveg.

It is also the opinion of Her Majesty's Government that there is an unfair and illegal targeting of Austwegian speaking nationals in the Vesterålen province. These persons are being unjustly profiled due to their language, creed and political opinion. Such actions only further divide the Scandinavian sub-continent, and continue to justify the policies carried out in Kristiania over the past month.

Fennian Unioni
The Fennian Union

The principle of judicial independence and our desire to guarantee working peace to the lawmen investigating the case of the Cronberg brothers means that I shall not comment on the specificities related to that criminal case, and that such inquiries should be directed to the personnel involved in the conduct of this investigation. However, on a general level and in my capacity as Foreign Minister, I shall endeavour to offer an appropriate response.

While the Fennian government is unable to comment on the specificities involved in this case and the forthcoming trial owing to reasons of investigative and national security, we shall assure that all trials and judicial proceedings conducted under Union authority will proceed to the highest standards of Fennian law. Should the defendants be unable to pay on their own accord for their attorney, one will be appointed to them by the Union Judicial Assistance Office.

The demand from Kristiania that Fennian citizens should be tried under "Auswegian law" is, frankly, ridiculous. Criminal suspects who have committed their acts whilst on Fennian soil will be tried according to the Criminal Code of the Fennian Union, especially so when they are Fennian citizens in themselves. We refute this call as thoroughly absurd and as a signal of the highest arrogance once again exhibited on behalf of Kristiania.

Furthermore, we are gravely disappointed that Kristiania continues its course of unashamed anti-Fennian propaganda and false claims about the status of the ethnic Norse within the Fennian Union. Obviously, the status of Norse as a protected minority language and the recognition given to Catholicism under the freedom of religion - as well as the basic rights enjoyed by the Norse Fennians as Union citizens - should be enough to tell the international community that Kristiania's claims of discrimination are thoroughly false, malicious propaganda spread with the intent of defaming the Union and with the intent of inciting anti-Fennian hatred among the Norse populace.

Additionally, thanks are given to the Cantignian government for their understanding of the way the Union has chosen to conduct this affair.

Regards,
Mr. Kauko Vannas,
Foreign Minister

NEWS IN BRIEF

 - KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - For the students of basic, people's and vocational schools as well as lyceums throughout Fennia, the next weekend will mark the long-awaited end of the school year as Fennia's young students go off to their well-deserved summer vacations. For the most part, actual schoolwork has ceased in the schools and lyceums of Fennia, and the last week of school will be spent in form of various teacher-organized events and excursions. In particular, the national capital of Kalevala and its numerous historical and cultural landmarks continue to be a popular place of visit for school groups, and the city will once again host many such groups during the week. Special attention will be given to the lyceum graduates who will receive their traditional student caps on Friday, with the Union government and local administrators once again rewarding the most accomplished of them with various stipends and tuition grants for their forthcoming university studies. The application period for Fennian universities will continue to the end of June.

While many students will spend at least a part of the summer working, particularly in rural areas where the young traditionally assist their fathers and mothers in farming and ranching enterprises, the Information Office in concert with civic youth organizations and Fennian towns is once again campaigning to activate idle youth by providing them with useful activities such as summer camps and courses. Information Minister Kaarlo Nurmi announced today that his department of the government would provide increasing monetary support to organizations involved in setting up youth activities during the school holidays, such as the Fennian Mission, other charitable institutions, the League of Young Lions, the National Scouts Movement and the National Cadet Corps.

 - YRJÖNLINNA, WEST KALEVALA REPUBLIC - The Merchant Marine Board is commencing a program to investigate the possibility of cargo container usage for more efficient transportation of bulk cargo. Spurned by the growing emphasis based on maritime commerce due to the recent reduction of trade between Fennia and Ostveg, as well as the continuous increase of cargo shipping between Fennia Proper and the Protected Territories, the program aims to assess the feasibility of propositions calling for the movement of maritime cargo into a set of standardized shipping containers. Though containers are already used in some form of land and sea based cargo transportation, officials from the Merchant Marine Board emphasize that actually effective container shipping is yet to be developed.

"This year's estimates project that more and more goods will travel by sea to and from Fennia, and between Fennia Proper and the Protected Territories", said Sea Counselor Yrjö Liimatainen who chairs the Merchant Marine Board, saying that containerization would increase the turn-around rates of ships in port and improve the safety of ship crews and the stevedores involved in loading and offloading the cargo ships. However, Liimatainen underlind the importance of addressing issues such as designs used for the cargo ships themselves as well as the development of harbor infrastructure and the need to involve shipping companies and maritime authorities of other countries in order to properly facilitate the advancement of international maritime commerce. The Yrjönlinna Merchant Marine Academy and companies including the Fennian Thaumantic Lines are involved in the program commissioned by the Merchant Marine Board.

KALEVALA, KINGDOM OF KALEVALA - Union Army Flag Day celebrated throughout the country
Congress appoints Häyhä Marshal of Fennia, battleship Turisas rejoins the fleet

The most important celebration in the year of the Fennian military, the Union Army Flag Day, was once again celebrated in Kalevala, Pyhä Henrik and other Fennian cities in the honor of our armed forces, their active servicemen and the reservists and the military veterans. Established at the 31st of May to mark the Battle of Sörnäinen, a decisive victory in the Fennian-Agder War and the last major engagement of the said conflict on the 31st of May in 1875, the Flag Day has commemorated the Fennian military and reminded our citizens of the vitality of national defense for 137 years.

In Kalevala, thousands of servicemen representing the Land Forces, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marines as well as the Military Police, Coast Guard, Border Guard and Civil Guard paraded amidst an audience of tens of thousands of outlookers to the heart of the capital, being received by Stateholder General Joakim Häyhä and leading cabinet ministers, Congressmen, military officers and foreign military attachés and diplomats in the Kekkonen Square. The parading detachments, chosen from the finest units of each branch of service, also showcased the extensive array of military equipment in Fennian military service including the latest variants of PsV 45 Leijona "Universal Tank" continuing to replace older tank models in Fennian military service. Also, the Air Force and Naval Aviation contributed with an overflight of up to 24 aircraft - six Condor interceptors, six King Eagle fighter-bombers, six Sea Eagle carrier fighters and six Wind fighter-bombers - showcasing the latest of Fennian jet aviation.

During the course of an address held to the assembled servicemen and audience in Kekkonen Square, Häyhä emphasized the growing importance of national defense for the welfare of the Fennian nation. "The Union Army was the bulwark of the Fennian Unification, and that realization of our national destiny would've been impossible without the strength of arms to forge together a divided nation, to redeem our ethnic brothers from Norse tyranny and to safeguard Fennia from those same tyrants in the Fennian-Agder War", Häyhä proclaimed, "Now, the servicemen and reservists of the Union Army find themselves standing in the paths of our fathers as our old enemy rears its head once more, and the perils of Bolshevism also seek to assail the Union and our national order."

In Yrjönlinna, Fleet Admiral Aleksi Sumuvuori presided over the traditional Flag Day Fleet Review and formally recommissioned the battleship UA Turisas which left the Yrjönlinna Naval Shipyards at the completion of its refurbishment program. Honor shots fired by the remaining Kekkonen class battleship and its main battery of 380mm guns were an appropriate conclusion to the Fleet Review of Naval and Coast Guard vessels.

At the same time, the Union Congress passed a resolution creating changes to the Union Army rank structure, dated to concide with the Flag Day, creating the new ranks of Marshal of Fennia, General Marshal and Marshal as well as Grand Admiral and Fleet Admiral for the Navy. The title of Marshal of Fennia was bestowed to Stateholder Häyhä in honor of his contributions to our national safety and welfare. War Minister, Admiral Mikael Aminoff, and Chief of Staff, General Jouko Heinrichs were promoted to Grand Admiral and General Marshal respectively. The accompanying change in rank structure will see the promotion of all main branch commanders as Marshals, while the present rank of General would be bestowed to interservices headquarters commanders. Protected Territories Governor-General Yrjö Hannula was promoted to a full General as his office will now assume responsibility for the Army's Protected Territories Headquarters as well.

In addition, smaller parades were held in Pyhä Henrik - representing units stationed in the Protected Territories - and other Fennian cities while thousands of servicemen and reservists received letters of promotion and commendations signed by now-Marshal of Fennia Joakim Häyhä himself. In the garrison cities, on-leave servicemen and military veterans are expected to fill the dance halls and parks for their own traditional celebrations.

The Imperial Government wishes to extend its congratulations to Joakim Häyhä for his appointment as Marshall of Fennia – a rank most appropriate for a man of his character and vision – and we hope that the ties between the Imperial State and the Fennian Union only continue to grow and strengthen as we collectively face threats which stand in direct opposition to forces of true civilization.
