Grand Duke recovering following assassination attempt

Chagny

"The Grand Duke has been shot in the hand at point blank range with high velocity pistol round. The resulting damage to his left hand forced a team of physicians to work for over 10 hours to save his hand. The recovery time will be very great" said one of the staff physicians at Chagny Central Hospital. The suspected shooter, Myles Llewellyn, is in custody and was treated for minor injuries as he was reportedly beaten by the crowd. Police have said the investigation is ongoing and that Ducal Gendarmerie is leading the investigation. le Soleil has learned that Myles Llewellyn migrated to Bourgogne during the Burgundian republican era and has been owned a car rental service in Pillau for nearly 2 years. Count Andre Dampierre, the Foreign Minister, has sent letters of thank you to several governments due to their timely condolences. Due to the Grand Duke having no legitimate offspring, Prince Alan de Dreux was rushed to Chagny under heavy guard from his home in Brienne. Under the most recent constitution, power has temporarily been transferred to Prince Alan until the Grand Duke can adequately assume his responsibilities.

A state of emergency has been declared nationwide as security services have begun to carry out operations to ensure no further incidents occur.

We are very happy to see that His Royal Highness the Grand-Duke is recovering at a steady pace. Our compliments go to the surgical team who operated the Grand-Duke's hand, because hand operations are one of the most difficult operations to carry out.

LEVANTINE STATES SENATE
LEVANTIS CIVITAS SENATUS

TIBURAN REPUBLIC STATES of the LEVANT
TIBURAN RES PUBLICA CIVITAS LEVANS

4th April 1956
The Ducal Government and Family of the Grand Duchy of Burgundy,

Your Highness, the Grand Duke of Burgundy – the Grand Council of the Levantine States Senate of the Tiburan Republic States of the Levant having permitted that my fashioned letter, on the behalf of the concerned and saddened College of Segazdryhten, upon this date of 4th of April should of course be officially produced for your public or private consideration. As a clear definition of the generosity of the Levantine citizens, I should inform you of the prayers being offered and given on behalf of his Holiness the Tiburan Patriarch of the Levant, Bohemond VI of Sidena the Archbishop of Sidena, and his Holiness’ Congregation of the Levant. It is sincerely hoped that those prayers find you and deliver you to the greatest return of health.

In a few weeks, or months, no doubt the perpetrator of this great crime shall cease to be, as expected and justified by the dishonourable nature of his crime. Before Myles Llewellyn draws upon his last vital breath, the Council of Segazdryhten wishes it to be known, and declare it with the frankness and authority which up to this day the College of Segazdryhten has never felt necessary, that assassination, in whatever garb it may be disguised, does not enter amongst the devout and most Holy principles of the Tiburan Republic States of the Levant, nor does it enter amongst the most honourable principles of Republicanism, although by a grave fatal error of mind and spirit Myles Llewellyn had allowed himself to be led on to organize the attempt on your Highness’ life.

No, political assassination was not of the Levantine or the Republican system, and the Tiburan Republic States of the Levant combats it at every opportunity, both by law and by public demonstrations of Levantine devotion to the Holiest Mother Church of Tibur.

To the compatriots of Myles Llewellyn, and every man and woman across the reaches of Europe – far from putting your faith in the dishonourable system of assassination – stand with the Tiburan Republic States in its rejection of it altogether and hold it aloof. You must know, by the voice of the greatest Tiburan Republic, that your redemption must be victorious by your own self denial, by constant unity in your peaceful efforts and sacrifices, and by the exercise of true virtue – gifts which the College of Segazdryhten recognises as budding in the young and active of Europe, and gifts which alone will be able to secure the freedom and progression of your societies, worthy of that glory with which Tiburan Republicanism has made the Levant illustrious.

The Tiburan Republic States of the Levant guarantees that when someday the progression of Republicanism reaches far and wide throughout Europe, it shall give its strength and authority to the honourable cause of a worthy compensation to all those who have suffered any injury from their political efforts.

Let your Highness, the Grand Duke of Burgundy, permit the College of Segazdryhten to implore you to accept the reasoning of the necessity in sparing the life of Myles Llewellyn and deliver him to permanency within the borders of the Levant, as the greatest possible demonstration of forgiveness and courage by yourself, your Highness, and your Grand Duchy of Burgundy.

The College of Segazdryhten remains, with the profoundest respect for your Highness the Grand Duke and his Highness’ subjects of the Grand Duchy of Burgundy.

SIGNED and EXTENDED,
COLLEGE of SEGAZDRYHTEN

6 April

Your heartwarming message has indeed been uplifting. As I recover, I believe it important for Bourgogne and other nations to recognize the significance of the current global situation. The attempt on my life aside, I believe the global situation to be dire. While Bourgogne has absolutely no official or likewise unofficial opposition to republicanism, we feel that the minority of Ivernia (or any nation) should not dictate the wishes of the many. This is, in essence, a core ideal of republicanism and democracy. The Ivernish conflict is quickly becoming a proxy war of ideals. Recognizing this, it is important to differentiate the Burgundian mission. We aim to secure a global stability. This civil war, though terrible, is perhaps necessary for some to reason their own positions on how the world should be formed. Outside influences in this conflict want the opposite of stability and seek to destroy a peace which we all desperately seek.

As for Myles Llewellyn, I confess I have no personal malice towards the man himself. Yet, a rule of law must be adhered by. Laws are a reflection of a society's values. There is no provision in our constitution for Regicide or Attempted Regicide. Mr. Llewellyn will either be tried under Burgundian laws for Attempted murder or will be extradited by our courts to Ivernia for trial. Mr. Llewellyn will receive whatever justice our court system sees fit.

Kind regards and may the Lord bless,
Maximilien

Grand Duke released from hospital, promises "consequences" for Ivernish rebels

Chagny

The Grand Duke was released from hospital this morning in high spirits and featuring a heavily bandaged hand. Reports indicate that he has lost some use of the hand. The Grand Duke gave a small press conference from his Chagny residence, noting that security forces did their job with extreme "dignity and efficiency" following the attempt on his life by a rebel sympathizer. The Grand Duke appeared tired but remained candid. When asked as to the fate of the would-be assassin, the Grand Duke pledged to leave it to the Burgundian legal system. "This is why we have a constitution, it applies to all; even those who would attempt to kill a leader" he said. "Laws reflect societal beliefs and values. If we were to discard them for this, what manner of nation would we be? What does it say about our nation to the world?" The Grand Duke was pressed on how the incident would reflect on the current Burgundian military action in Ivernia. After pushing the question aside, Grand Duke Maximilien, after repeated questions answered by saying that "there will be consequences. If anything, this heightens Burgundian resolve to restore global stability".

"We urge the Burgundian government not to let themselves be blinded by emotion after this attack on their head of state. The Milesian Revolution is an affair that doesn't need any sort of increased intervention by the Burgundian military. The latter has already severely damaged the social revolution which the brave republicans have been waging for years against Ivernish fascism. Kadikistani volunteers aiding their Milesian comrades have already brought back terrifying stories of how Burgundian military aircraft's drop tons of bombs on highly populated cities, with an unspeakable civilian death-toll that rises every day. Not a single Burgundian should be surprised that someone took matters into his own hands and chose to risk his life for the Milesian cause. A cause that Bourgogne has always tried to mercilessly destroy with bullets and bombs in defence of capitalism.

While we do not condone the assassination attempt and certainly will not involve ourselves with the internal affairs of Bourgogne, we urge for restraint. Emotion is a terrible councillor and Europe does not need more short-sighted political visions that lead to overzealous military actions. Opportunistic demagogues will attempt to seize the momentum and impose even harsher repression of Europe's working class, like we saw recently in the Propontine Empire. Blind reaction must be replaced by national debate and awareness for the crimes that are being committed in Milesia by both the Ivernish and Burgundian governments. The cure that will solve the Milesian questions is still a mystery to us, but more bombs and more bullets are not the answer."

While we echo the concerns that emotional reactions are rarely, if ever, a solution to such problems, we must take issue with the accusation that we have bombarded highly populated areas. Our air operations have thus far primarily been targeted in and around the city of Lowport, a city in which a large portion of the civilian population was either evacuated or moved from areas of combat. Bourgogne has thus far acted in hopes that global stability may be returned. However, continued aid to rebel forces who do not represent the majority of Ivernians has deepened this crisis. Bourgogne will continue to act in the best interests of global stability. We again any accusation of malice or criminal action against the Ivernish peoples.

"The Burgundish Minister for Foreign Policy Dampierre speaks of democracy, but fails to comprehend the Milesian conflict. The Milesian revolutionaries fight not for control over Ivernia, but rather complete and total emancipation from Ivernia, which is in fact a long-time foreign aggressor. Therefore the argument that a majority of the Ivernish population is against Milesian independence is invalid. As long as a strong majority of the Milesian people support the revolution in their sovereign country their struggle is legitimate and the Burgundian intervention inherently undemocratic. It appears easy for the Burgundian authorities to abuse the objective facts and claim they are bombing cities for the sake of democracy, but the majority of Milesian craves independence even if they are weary of the long and bloody war."

We fully comprehend the situation in Ivernia. The idea that a majority of the so called Milesian populace wishes independence is farcical.

Coalition naval forces blockade Milesian ports following withdrawal of Burgundian volunteers from Lowport

Lans

A tighter blockade was introduced as Burgundian naval assets along with allied navies moved to encircle rebel held ports. According to various military sources, Burgundian aircraft have begun attacking port facilities but have faced intense air defenses which have resulted in "measurable losses". According to a Burgundian Navy spokesman, ships wishing to enter the ports with humanitarian aid will be allowed to pass through the blockade after inspection and must be inspected after leaving. The spokesman stated that ships smuggling weapons or war materials will be seized and their crews either arrested or deported depending on origin. Ships attempting to run the blockade will be viewed as hostile and will be boarded if possible, disabled, or sunk.

"The meddling of Bourgogne in the Gothic Sea is becoming increasingly provocative. We fear that our wise words have falling into deaf man's ears. We warn the Burgundian naval authorities not to capture or engage any Kadikistani ship in the Gothic Sea or Milesian coast. Any such act will be seen as an act of aggression against the Democratic Republic of Kadikistan and will be met with a military response. The Revolutionary North-western Fleet currently organizing war games in the region is on high alert and ready to respond immediately at the earliest sign of aggression. A fragile balance of power exists in the Gothic Sea and must be maintained to prevent further escalations."

It seems to us that Kadikistan is doing everything possible to heighten and escalate tensions. Is operating naval exercises in the Gothic Sea, so close to a war zone, considered by those in Ivar to be a prudent decision? Bourgogne will do nothing to interfere with the exercises so long as the exercises do not interfere with the ongoing conflict. Bourgogne has no desire for conflict with Kadikistan. Thus, Ivernia and Bourgogne have clearly set the terms of our blockade. Again, Bourgogne will do nothing to interfere with Kadikistan naval operations.

The Empire of Carinthia-Harkány
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Wolfgang Norbert Falkenrath
12th of APRIL, 1956
Grand Duchy of Bourgogne
TOP SECRET

The Government of Carinthia-Harkány urges the Burgundian Government to reconsider certain naval actions taking place at the ports of the rebellious Milesia. A blockade of the level that Bourgogne has proposed has serious consequences to the diplomatic negotiations underway between both the Carintho-Harkaner Government and Kadikistani one. The Carintho-Harkaner Government requests that the Burgundian ships remain in the area, but do not actively engage in the comprehensive measure that it has publically declared. This is essential to not upset the balance and sensitivity of the talks currently taking place.

Further, the Carintho-Harkaner Government takes particular insult to the Grand Duchy’s refusal to inform the Imperial Government of plans to engage in a naval operation of this scale. Should these actions upset the sensitive nature of the Carintho-Harkaner and Kadikistani nation, it will behoove the Imperial Government to reconsider the future relations between our two countries.

Intelligence reports: Ivernish rebels being supplied by Kadikistani sources

Changy

Multiple intelligence reports, released by the Burgundian government, indicate that Kadikistani ships are actively supplying the rebel forces in Ivernia. The Burgundian move to shut down this supply line by blockading ports was met with threats of war from Kadikistan. In response, the Burgundian air forces in the region have begun to hit shore facilities and to destroy roads and railroads that lead from the rebel held ports. Burgundian aircraft have continued to fly a massive number of sorties to stem the flow of supplies reaching the front. "With no interior lines and severely damaged shore facilities, the rebels will find it increasingly difficult to pull together a concerted effort" said a government spokesman. Public opinion remains largely split on the Burgundian operations and some protests have been reported at university campuses. The government is reportedly concerned as allied forces are supposedly preparing for a massive summer offensive.
