Military: Serenierre continues to fortify border. Foreign Ministry: Asylum seekers will be dealt with on a case by case basis

Chagny

According to a military report, while Serenierre has removed some troops from the border area, a significant ammount of troops remain while fortifications are being built which include pill boxes and barbed wire. "Serenierre has single handedly destroyed the relationship between our two countries by creating a hostile environment and moreover creating a climate in which the two nations cannot speak. The disinformation given to its citizens, whom are actively persecuted by their government, is highly damaging. We can only hope that this outlook changes and they take our hand, which has continually extended in friendship" said Claude Darc, the Grand Duke's Dean of Staff. According to the military report, Bourgogne will continue the policy of not fortifying our own side but will maintain a higher level of alert for the foreseeable future. Reports indicate that those attempting to cross into Bourgogne from the border region are subject to arrest or lethal force. There was no indication as to finite numbers but the report does indicate that several have been killed. The Foreign Ministry issued a statement this morning denouncing the enforcement actions and that asylum seekers would be welcome but would ultimately dealt with on a case by case basis.

The People's Republic takes exception to the statement issued by Monsieur C. Darc: I seek to inform the Burgundian government that the border security protocol has not been enhanced ever since the Villesen Government engaged with Chagny to de-escalate tensions. Monsieur C Darc should not make irresponsible statements of the kind he has made. It was the People's Republic which committed itself, first, to weaving a new narrative in terms of the regional situation.

The events of the past few days should not allow the trend of rapprochement to be derailed. It would be a shame, and a serious blight on the record of the Grand Duke as a leader of his nation, if senior members of the Burgundian Government continue to work against the joint efforts of achieving a new peaceful order in the region. The People's Republic is committed to calming the tensions however increasingly finds itself confronted by a reactionary wall of opposition in some members of the Burgundian Government.

If Villesen wished to truly create a new peaceful order, it would agree to re-open diplomatic channels fully. Barbed wire, pill boxes, and multiple divisions of troops on the border, which is virtually unopposed on the Burgundian side, does not fit the narrative of a peaceful order. Again, Villesen kicks dust at our feet and asks us "why are your shoes dirty?"

Bourgogne wishes for a full return to border operations, a more significant draw-down of troops poised on our border, and a healthy and open diplomatic relationship. That is all we can ask for.

OP ED: The myth of the ethnic Burgundian

Hans Berrenbach, Junior Editor

With the fall of the hard-right republican government, one would have thought relations with Villesen would have remained warm. Many would have thought relations would have even gotten closer. Even with the somewhat apprehensive rhetoric by Burgundian officials, the government worked tirelessly to remain in good graces with respective colleagues in Villesen.

Yet, relations turned sour as the communist government began arresting Burgundian citizens seemingly at random. Not only did the arrests seemingly materialize out of the blue but the government in Villesen also threw multiple divisions at the border with Bourgogne despite the Burgundian side only having a few hundred border guards over the vast expanse of territory. What followed was a total shut down of communication between the two countries, wholly initiated by Serenierre. The downward spiral continued as cultural Burgundians along the border began receiving restrictions from Villesen in the form of curfews and mass arrests. To outside observers, while relations between the two governments has improved, the government in Villesen looks unable to assert its authority without these brash acts. As of recent, Villesen is intent on dividing not only themselves from their neighbors but the people of Serenierre as well. To accomplish this, they have decided cultural Burgundians within their own borders are of a different ethnicity. Our two peoples are Frankish. There are Germanics and others which also make up great integral parts of our nations. To divide us further by labeling our people simply is a crime.

"Utter propaganda" says Grand Duke of Bourgogne's image

Pillau

In a rare Saturday press conference, the Grand Duke took rather light hearted questions regarding the upcoming visit to Bourgogne by a delegation from Engellex. The Grand Duke stated that the meeting was going to be highly informal in nature and was meant to be more of a discussion on the general discourse that is currently plaguing the region. "No major treaties will be signed or agreed upon. The main methodology at play will simply be discussion" he said. He went on to say that minor agreements were possible but would not go into detail. When pressed if this was a precursor to an alliance, a visibly agitated Maximilien responded by stating that "though we have been offered alliances outside of our current situation, we have declined all. We wish to remain with a certain flexibility. Yet we remain pushed into a corner. Utter propaganda paints Bourgogne as an anti-communist crusader. We are far from hostile towards any real ideology. We have extended our hand repeated, only to have it swatted away. Yet other nations rally, boisterously, against communism. Bourgogne remains a scapegoat, a target for hate and hostility"

An interview with Pierre Vimont
Granted political asylum from Serenierre after his family gunned down while crossing border

Chagny

Pierre Vimont crossed the border in the late morning near Gizeaux. Not before a bullet whizzed between his arm and body and his wife and daughter were killed by border guards from Serenierre. The following interview transcript originates from a broadcast last evening on le Soleil radio. This transcript only covers the first third of the interview. Hear the full interview rebroadcast this evening at 8pm.

Jacques Boillon (lS): Mr. Vimont, you have recently been granted asylum. Yet you have lost both your wife and daughter in the process.
Vimont: Yes...I....have
Boillon: Your daughter was how old?
Vimont: Marie...she was 11. My wife Eleanor was 33.
Boillon: Can you describe why you decided to leave?
Vimont: We are not the first to have tried. Many have been arrested and hurt. I do not know numbers.
Boillon: Killed?
Vimont: Yes, I think so. There are stories. I have not seen it personally. We have always considered ourselves loyal citizens of Serenierre. We are in fact socialists. My father was president of the his local club of socialists many years ago.
Boillon: So were you persecuted for not being full communists?
Vimont: Not directly, no. We only received persecution as the government turned against cultural Burgundians. If you sometimes preferred a red wine at dinner instead of a white, you became suspect. If you spoke with Burgundian slang you were suspect. We always considered ourselves loyal to our country. Now the country has turned against us.
Boillon: Turned against you?
Vimont:Yes, against my family. They murdered my wife and child simply to stop us from....clearly those of Burgundian culture within Serenierre are a problem for the government. One would think they would let us go.
Boillon: Perhaps you hold intrinsic value for the government?
Vimont: I am not an engineer or general. I am a tailor. I make relatively cheap suits for people of little means.
Boillon: Do you still have family in Serenierre?
Vimont: My mother is elderly and is in a state facility for the elderly. I fear that she has since felt the wrath of Villesen.
Boillon: Do you wish to return to Serenierre one day?
Vimont: I am a patriot sir. I love my country. My country does not love me back. What am I to do? Perhaps one day.

Milesian conflict drags on as Bourgogne cuts naval budget
Chagny

The summer offensive remains stalled as Ivernish and other forces work to consolidate ground already won. Bourgogne has worked to increase humanitarian aid to formerly occupied zones and has begun to assist Ivernish authorities in rebuilding infrastructure. "It is imperative that the Ivernish people suffer no more than they already have" said a spokesman. Burgundian aircraft have continued in assisting Ivernish air assets by conducting air assaults on key interior line positions. "Our air forces, along with that of Bourgogne are making it increasingly difficult for the rebel forces to transfer manpower and supplies in the occupied zone" said an Imperial spokesman on Monday. Bourgogne has seen moderate air losses due to the intense workload and anti-aircraft weaponry which has been funneled to rebel forces. In response, the legislature and Grand Duke have agreed to cut the naval budget by an unspecified amount in order to replenish and enlarge the Burgundian air fleet. "We expect a final offensive to utterly destabilize and ultimately force the collapse of the rebel forces to begin soon" the Imperial spokesman stated. Bourgogne's humanitarian efforts are under pressure as Kadikistani naval assets continue to operate in the region. Admiral Francois Paire stated that "we are continuing to be vigilant and careful while operating any maritime forces in support of humanitarian efforts. The ships being used remain civilian in nature but we must remain cautious". "The cuts to the naval budget are worrying as Bourgogne already operates a disproportionately small [naval] force. Relying on allies to help protect Burgundian naval interests is a mistake" said legislative member Jean Michaux.

Atlas Air flight from Drottningsfors to St. Wilhelmsstadt suspected to have crashed in Gothic Sea

Caerdydd

A flight from Bourgogne's primary airline has gone missing over the Gothic Sea. The pilot had reported engine trouble but nothing further. The flight, with 63 on board including the the crew, was set to land around 5am local time. The flight was primarily carrying Burgundian and Mehldorfian citizens after arriving the previous morning from a long flight from Bourgogne. The Burgundian navy has dispatched a destroyer from Ivernish waters where it had been assisting the Imperial government in maritime security operations. Naval forces from Gotarige and Mehldorf have been requested to assist in search operations. A personal request from the Grand Duke to authorities in Kadikistan has been rumored to have been sent in which help from their own Gothic Sea operations has been requested.

"As a sign of goodwill to the world and especially the Burgundian and Mehldorfian people the Kadikistani Revolutionary Western Fleet has detached two Guard Ships, two Corvettes and one Frigate from the War Games currently taking place in the Gothic Sea. The Kola-Class Frigate has been assigned as squadron leader and will be in constant communication with the coordinator of the Burgundian-led rescue efforts. We do not believe innocent civilians should have to suffer for the crimes of their regimes. We commit to doing everything we can to help look for the missing commercial aircraft and save potential survivors."

To the Government of Bourgogne,

The Government of Mehldorf is distraught by the potential of loss of life and as such is promising 2 Commander class frigates to scour the area. We will also be conducting maritime patrols from our aircraft carrier HMS Madeline which is based in the Gothic Sea. The Government is going to be in close contact with the Burgundian government in attempts to find the missing plane. We pray for the families of those who have potentially lost family members who were on the flight.

Signed,
The Rt. Honourable Thomas K. Eldritch

Burgundian court rules against Serenierre

Chagny

Despite ideological differences, academics in Bourgogne and Serenierre continued to work alongside. A museum exhibit was lent to Bourgogne for a specifically agreed upon time. However, when Serenierre abruptly closed the border with Bourgogne, the National Archaeological Museum tried to contact their counterparts to no avail. "The exhibit was ready to be returned. Our limited budget means that storing it was very hard on our budget. Nor could we afford to transport it to a third party and then to Serenierre. So we were stuck" said a spokesman. Deliberations took place and several pieces of evidence were admitted. The court found that while the Burgundian museum was at fault for not attempting to use other channels in the academic community, there was no malicious attempt by the museum to hold the artifacts. The court ordered the museum to review its policies for any future eventualities. The court ordered for the government of Serenierre to pay for storage fees and to pay half of the transport fees to get the items returned via a third party country despite the protests of the Burgundian defendants. The court stated that if any part of the funding is not paid by Serenierre, the items would be stored and would only be returned upon payment of storage.

Burgundian Air Force begins massive humanitarian drops, rumors fly in liberated towns

Chagny

As planes roar down the runway it is interesting to think that these aircraft have no bombs. Only large packets of food to be parachuted down on civilian populations in Ivernish rebel held territory. The operation began yesterday as bombers were relieved of hitting interior lines and port facilities, pivoting to a humanitarian role. "While we prepare for the now Autumn offensive, it is important we do what we can for those who have been subjugated by these rebels" began an air force spokesman. "Smaller aircraft will continue to disrupt the movement of military supplies but we must ensure the continuation of life in civilian areas. The spokesman went onto say that the operations would continue along the ground as more places are liberated. As a handful of villages and towns are captured rumors continue to swirl that foreign engineers have been pillaging factories and workshops for heavy equipment. An Ivernish news report stated that the engineers would arrive and after a few days a work crew would come and dismantle any heavy equipment before it was removed from the town. Imperial authorities are apparently investigating as further facts come to light.

Atlas Air 59 Crash determined to be pilot error

Lans

Investigators examining wreckage and logs has determined that the crash of Atlas Air Flight 59 was likely caused by pilot error. The flight had 63 on board comprised of mostly Burgundian and Mehldorfian citizen. The report released this morning details what investigators believe to be cause of the crash. "flaps were set in an inappropriate manner and evidence shows the pilot additionally did not understand or recognize the aircraft's altitude. It is likely that the pilot, once recognizing the error, overcompensated; ultimately resulting in the crash" said the report. The Burgundian government has extended letters of thanks to all nations involved in the search. At least one family has written a letter to Kadikistan thanking them (See tomorrow's edition for more information).

Arms race worrying to Burgundians

Chagny

A recent survey found that 64% of Burgundians were 'Concerned' regarding the recent global arms push. As many nations have begun to expand their military might, Bourgogne has largely resisted despite blatant aggression and threats to the Grand Duchy. Several reports and editorials have cited the Burgundian navy as being woefully inadequate despite heavy investments in the air forces and army. The Defense Ministry declined to comment however an inside source has told le Soleil that the Defense Ministry is "extremely on edge".
