Sikandari Ships In Long Sea Likely Sunk By Storm
The three ships that sunk in the Long Sea likely became the victim of storms, Commissar for Foreign Affairs Matija Dracar stated during a press conference. According to the Commissar there is no reason to assume 'foul play' in the sinking of the vessels and the only reason such theories circulate is the sinking of another Sikandari ship off its coast, which the Commissar claims is unrelated to the event but "used by Sikandara to distract from the charges brought against it and portray itself and its entire people as victim of assaults". Commissar Dracar noted that hundreds of ships sink in the Long Sea each year and that these are "normal figures for a waterway as large and important as the Long Sea" and that the international community should not fall victim to the Sikandari tactics of self-victimization when "there is ample evidence that it has committed a foul and despicable act of terrorism and piracy against helpless people from its own territory".

Fallen Soldiers Of Seora Campaign Honored
While the campaign in Seora has recently ground to a stalemate, Carentanian soldiers who fell during fighting were honored in the capital today. As Rijeka is already preparing for the All-Workers' Congress later this month, friends and family of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of a people far away from home gathered on the Black Square. The names of all 116 Carentanian soldiers that had been killed were announced and a minute of silence held for each of them, before the Commissar for Defence and the Marshal of the Revolutionary Army adressed the crowd. "It is noble to give your life for those whom you love, to fight for their freedom and safety. It is noble still to give your life for those whom you never met, to fight for the freedom and security of people you have not known before," the Commissar said. The ceremony concluded with the Internationale and the revolutionary anthem 'that plain red flag".

Carentanian Diplomats Slam Bourgogne
The Carentanian Commissariate for Foreign Affairs has publically criticized the Burgundian campaign in the Green Peninsula, where 15.000 Burgundian soldiers are hunting down Communists. In its official statement, the Commissariate called the campaign a "petty display of vengefulness" and warned that independence for the Burgundian colony will turn out to be a sham if powerful political factions "without whose struggle Bourgogne would never have agreed to the process of decolonization" were to be subjected to a campaign of persecution and terror ahead of the upcoming elections.

Office of the Grand Duke

The rabid accusation of the Carentanian Commissariate for Foreign Affairs is laughable. First, it mentions vengeful actions. What are we doing in vengeance? What action has been taken other than an attempted coup by a small minority? No. It is a response. The accusation that we are hunting communists is also misleading. We are hunting armed communist rebels. If communists win elections in 1960, then they will win and we will applaud the people of the Green Peninsula for voicing their political opinion. Perhaps in Carentania rule by the minority is acceptable but in the Green Peninsula this will not be. The majority will have political self determination. The independence council, created by natives, has members of numerous political affiliations including communists. Perhaps the Commissariate should be more concerned where it is throwing its petty accusations

Commissariate for Foreign Affairs

The fact of the colonial subjugation of the Green Peninsula by Bourgogne should be taken into consideration before carelessly accusing those who fight it to aim for a "rule by the minority". Not to mention Bourgougne's own aristocratic nature, which is most definitely a "rule by the minority" itself. Bourgougne's campaign that seeks to perpetuate the rule of its capitalist class over the riches of Himyar is shameful and threatens to turn the promise of independence into a sham. We urge the Grand Duchy to stand down and enter into negotiations with the Communist factions in the Green Peninsula. The Workers' Republic of Carentania will gladly take on the role of moderator in such talks.

Are we not handing power to the native peoples? Allowing them the freedom of self determination? Bourgogne will be having democratic elections this month and the Grand Duke will cease to hold political power outside of ceremonial. We are already in the process of standing down as the majority of rebels have been killed or captured. This was publicly announced several days ago. Bourgogne's campaign, which was paid for with Burgundian lives, was against a small minority who wished to impose rule rather than receive power from the people. We have fought to ensure elections occur in 1960. No matter which political entity wins, we will be in support. Yes, this includes communists. The only sham here is the accusation that we have nefarious intentions for the future of the Green Peninsula. Our only intention is to see them make their own choices.

Carentania Has 'Means To Defend Long Sea' If Threatened
Commissar for Foreign Affairs Matija Dracar commented on the Long Sea situation in an interview with the 'Communard', that he sees the tensions in the Long Sea as mainly fabricated by foreign powers for their own purposes. "Minor events are given critical importance and situations of conflict are provoked in an attempt to destabilize the region and justify a further militarization of the Long Sea," the Commissar said. Because these events were backed by staunch anti-Communist rhetorics, the Commissart believes that the escalating tension serves as propagandistic background for increased military presence in the Long Sea, aimed at taking from the isolated socialist states their most important security guarantuee. "Fact of the matter is: the socialists states are weaker and less numerous than the capitalist powers and only the fact that we could grab global trade by its throat keeps them at bay."
The Commissar stressed that Carentania would maintain this defensive capability and answer threats as needed. "We have the means to defend the Long Sea from hostile incursions, if needed and foreign powers engaging in adventures in our region of Europe should realize that they are playing with fire by inciting conflict in the region."

Case Of Smallpox In Učka
A case of smallpox was discovered in the city of Učka and isolated at the University Hospital. The Commissariate for Public Health commented that the situation seems under control and that it believes the disease not to have spread yet. Nevertheless, individuals who exhibit symptoms of smallpox infection are to refer to medical professionals immediately and failure to do so could be persecuted by law. "Smallpox is a deadly and highly contagious disease," the Commissar for Public Health warned in a national emergency adress. "We will treat this case with the necessary caution and hopefully prevent the developement of an epidemic." Friends and family who had been in contact with the infected 30 year old man have been contacted by the authorities are are supervised as a precautionary measure.

Government Recognizes Milesia
The government of the Workers' Republic has officially recognized the breakaway Republic Milesia, which seeks independence in the wake of a coup d'etat by nationalist forces in Ivernia. Carentania praised the republicans fighting the putschist forces in Ivernia as "bulwark of democracy" and invited Milesia to send a representative to Rijeka to coordinate relations between the two countries. "We are not blind to the suffering of the Ivernian people," Commissar for Foreign Affairs Matija Dracar stated. At the same time, the Commissar condemned the coup in Ivernia and called upon the international community to preserve the democratic achievements of past generations of Ivernians.

These are the news:

Workers' Republic To Double Synthetic Oil Capacities
Following suggestions from the Commissariate for Defence, the Commissariate for Economic Planning has announced funding of additional synthetic oil plants that will double Carentanias capacity to procure coal from domestic coal deposits. The decision to invest this heavily into a costly industry was made on strategic grounds, the Commissariate announced, noting that the facilities will be 'passive assets' that are only to be operated in case of warfare. "We are wary of the vulnerability of our overseas trade," the Commissar for Defence commented on the initiative, "and possessing sizeable strategic reserves and synthetic oil capabilities that are sufficiently large to supply our military once the former run out will be a strong deterrent to any hostile power that might be tempted to starve us out."

Sikandara To Militarize Trade Vessels
After an announcement by the government of Sikandara that it intends to outfit trade vessels with 'defensive equipment', the Commissariate for Foreign Affairs warned that this would effectively turn these ships into military vessels. In a public press conference Commissar Dracar warned of the ramifications and urged other nations to pressure Sikandara into abandoning its plans. "The neutrality of civilian traffic is in severe danger," the Commissar noted "and the prospect of not being able to distinguish between a civilian vessel and an armed, effectively military one, might lead to severe civilian casualties in future conflicts." He furthermore announced that Carentania would stop and seize any armed Sikandari vessel that entered Carentanian waters.

Revolutionary Armed Forces 'Not Worried' By Edessine Military Spending
The High Command of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, in a rare press release, reacted to announcements by the Edessine Empire that it would increase military spending yet again. "Our operational capabilities are at an all-time high," the Marshals of the Revolutionary Armed Forces state, claiming that Carentania is well prepared for an attack and would gain "superiority on all battlegrounds" within days following the start of hostilities. While most details of the plans for the eventuality of a war are secret and High Command can give little specific information as to the reason of its confidence, the press release stated "superior technology, training, experience and strategy" as the main factors working in favour of the Workers' Republic.[/edit]

Commissariate For Foreign Affairs Asks World To Defend Status Quo In Long Sea
During a press conference in Rijeka, commenting on Sikandari announcements of plans to militarize trade vessels and to establish an anti-communist intervention force, Commissar for Foreign Affairs Matija Dracar warned the world of the dire consequences this might have. Carentania would not allow itself to be threatened with war and stand idle as its enemies bring themselves into position to strike, the Commissar said and noted that this would have desastrous effects on trade in the Long Sea. "The status quo in the Long Sea has always served Europe well," the Commissar said "and freedom of the seas in the region was always respected, regardless of ideological affiliation of the many different states bordering the Long Sea. Foreign military presence is threatening to change that and initiate a vicious circle of aggression that will throw all of the Long Sea into jeopardy." Adressing the nations of Europe directly, the Commissar asked them to diplomatically intervene to stop a buildup of foreign military forces in the Long Sea.

Carentania Sends Condolences To Victims Of Ravet Terror Attack
Following a terrorist attack at a communist rally in the country of Ravet, the Workers' Republic of Carentania has officially extended its condolences to the victims and vigils for the five dead and twenty injured in the attack were held throughout the country. The Commissar for Inner Security held a public speech during the vigil in Rijeka, noting that reactionary acts of terror are not unknown to the Workers' Republic and that the tactics developed by Mezhist counter-revolutionaries are spreading across Europe as right-wing governments employ ever harsher anti-communit rhetorics. In an official note to the authorities in Ravet the Commissar later offered the help of Carentanian counter-terrorism specialists in investigating the attack, interrogating the apprehended suspected and researching possible accomplices behind the murders.

Industrial Exhibition In Cazma Opens Gates
Today was the first day of the five-yearly Industrial Exhibition of Carentania, where different Carentanian companies, engineers and visionaries reveal to the public the exciting developements of the future. Thousands had gathered in front of the exhibition hall and in particular the exhibition of European Cosmonautic Association drew large crowds as the attempts of the free world to bring mankind into the space age were displayed with a live-size model of the rockets the ECA is currently testing. But the all-time favourites of household-electronics - represented with a "kitchen of the future" - and automobility - represented with an experimental model by Goldstein Motors - were just as crowded. The exhibition will continue for four weeks and may be well worth a visit with your family!

Galindian And Carentanian Diplomats Discuss Situation In Ivernia
As two of the first states to recognize the Ivernian breakaway republic of Milesia, diplomats from Galindia and Carentania met today in Rijeka to discuss the situation behind close doors. In a press release after the meeting, the Carentanian government explained that a common stance on the situation was developing and that both governments had found ample ground for cooperation, although no details were specified. Towards the current Ivernian regime, the Commissariate for Foreign Affairs stressed the potential harm an attempt at military reconquest of the seperatist territories would bring to the civilian populace and urged the Ivernians to accept the changing realities, offering itself as mediator to settle existing grievances.

Archeological Discoveries In Tyarin-Sabassia Raise Interest In Carentanian Archives
Recent archeological discoveries in the country of Tyarin-Sabassia have sparked new interest in several pieces that had been discovered in the 19th century by Carentanian expeditions and stashed away in museum archives ever since. The Toyou collection of the Rijeka Museum of History, for example, commented that the new findings, which suggest an independent civilization in the Nabe desert as early as 3000 years ago, might hold the key to interpreting several objects in its archives. "These include a number of statuettes and finely decorated pottery works which thusfar had been interpreted as objects lost by caravans traversing the Nabe desert," the curator of the museum explained. "The unearthing of actual structures suggesting permanent settlement, however, casts an entirely new light on these objects."

Agency For Covert Investigations To Support Ravetian Investigations
Counter-terrorism and interrogation experts from the Agency for Covert Investigations will join the authorities of the nation of Ravetia in investigating the recent terror attack on a communist rally in its capital city. The attack, which left five dead, has been compared to attacks by right-wing terror groups that have plagued Carentania since the revolution and the ACI, specifically founded to counter this threat, has accumulated a great deal of expertise in recent years. "We believe we have knowledge and skill to offer in friendship," Milena Hafner, chief officer of the ACI, commented.

Revolutionary Navy Exercise In Long Sea
Carentanian military, consisting of the third fleet, three bomber divisions of the Revolutionary Navy Corps Aviation Forces, as well as land-based radar and defense installations have begung to conduct a surprise maneuver in the Long Sea. Governments in the region had been informed mere hours before and civilian traffic is advised to stay clear of the operational zone along the north-eastern Carentanian coastline and territorial waters for the duration of the exercise to avoid incidents. A spokesperson of the Commissariate for Defence openly admitted that the maneuver was scheduled on short notice given the tensions in the Long Sea over Sikandari plans for a military presence in the region: "We are testing the combat readiness of our defense assets, as well as sending a clear signal to agressive elements abroad," the spokesperson said during a press conference. The exercise is believed to conclude in less than 24 hours.

Wolf Illegally Shot In Crusader Valley
Park rangers of the Crusader Valley National Park have reported that one of the rare Himyar wolves inhabiting the remote area of the southern Haemians has been found dead, apparently shot by criminal hunters. Hunting is strictly forbidden in the confines of the National Park and the rangers remind the public that anyone caught poaching in such an area will be facing prohibitive fines and possibly even incarceration, especially if the target of the illegal huntin activity was an endangered species such as the Himyar Wolf. Only a few dozen Himyar Wolves live in the southern Haemians and the park authority of the Crusader Valley wishes to keep the population stable to preserve the natural wealth of Haemia for future generations.

Workers Republic Dismisses Findings Of International Commission
In a press release the Commissariate for Foreign Affairs has dismissed the findings of the International Commission tasked with investigating the sinking of a Sikandari refugee ship, claiming that the preliminary report of the commission was driven by "politically motivated cowardice" rather than "a commitment to truth". According to the Commissariate, the given evidence strongly suggests Sikandari foul play. "The evidence released by Auraria confirms as much," however, it was dismissed by the commission members to not upset Sikandari sensibilities who, without evidence, accused Auraria of lying. "The preliminary report stated that the ship was, without doubt, sunk by an torpedo attack, but that 'There is no evidence pointing in any direction.' - a blatant lie given the evidence implicating the Sikandari military," the Commissariate for Foreign Affairs stated and accussed the commission of further obscuring the investigation with "wild speculations about piracy as cause." Speculations which the Commissariate summarily dismissed: "there is no evidence whatsoever implicating pirates as responsible faction, nor is there any known piracy operation in the Long Sea at all, and much less is there even the remotest of evidence to suggest that criminal factions in the Long Sea had acquired sophisticated military equipment such as anti-ship torpedos."

We advise Carentania that Längisch-flagged merchant marine vessels traversing the Long Sea must be given a wide berth and a navigable passage through international waters throughout the duration of these exercises. Our flagged vessels, following standard protocol, will naturally stear clear of the exercises, but they will continue along international shipping lanes through the straits, as per usual.

We respect the right of Carentania to conduct such exercises, although as a neighbour along the Long Sea, we do protest against the lack of notice given, which is far from courteous and has a negative effect on economic activity in the region, not to mention political tensions.

OOC: where are you located on the map? Can't find you on the current version, but I'm assuming north coast of Himyar?

The provocative actions of the Carentanian military are clear examples of why the Long Sea is threatened by communist hegemony. The Imperial Government questions the timing and believes it to be a most irresponsible move on part of the regime in Rijecka. These are times we must all be moving towards peace rather than further heightening tensions.

The Carentanian response to the findings of the International Commission on the Long Sea cannot be said to be unexpected.

International Commission for the Long Sea

We strongly advice the officials of the Carentanian Commissariate for Foreign Affairs to read our report again before making any ill-based statements. Any documents suggesting that it would have been the Sikandari Navy that attacked the ships in question are by far not strong enough to be considered evidence, at least not before the court of a normally functioning constitutional state. If the Carentanian authorities would have had any evidence indicating that indeed the Sikandari Navy was the culprit, it should have provided that evidence to us. It did not do so. Therefore, we dismiss any reproach from the Carentanian Commissariate for Foreign Affairs that we were not committed to truth-finding. We were. But truth-finding also means that we should not falsely accuse people or countries.
For our claim regarding pirates or criminal organisations possessing highly advanced submarines, there are countries which are not interested in whom they sell their submarines to.

Lorenz Moorbach, Chairman of the ICLS

Aussenministerium
Trier, Eiffelland

The current Naval exercise in the Long Sea conducted by the Carentanian Navy has been timed very badly. The Carentanian government should have shown more understanding for the current sensible situation. This move will only make the situation more tense. Also we expect that our merchant vessels travelling in the Long Sea will not be hindered by the Carentanian Navy, i.e. that the Carentanian Navy keeps a navigable passage open for merchant vessels.

Rudolph Kögler, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor

OOC: Indeed, I don't see you anywhere on the map, Carentania, neither do I see any request for a map spot by you. By the way, Edessine Empire took your old place.
