The Grand Duchy respects the choice of a sovereign nation, but does not share the methods that we consider a recklessness of a violent epoch. The conversion of capital punishment into a detention in an inderterminated time would prove that the Kingdom of Elben has mercy.

Whereas the Pelasgian Empire has long abolished burning at the stake as a form of capital punishment, we still respect the choice of the Kingdom of Elben to execute subversive elements seeking to overthrow the established Order in that Realm. It is the natural Right of any State to defend itself against Godless and other subversives who seek to undermine and overthrow it. We have no comment on the Elbener judicial process, other than that we trust in its fairness and impartiality, having no proof to the contrary. While we generally prefer other methods of execution, such as hanging and the firing squad, it is not our business how Elben chooses to make an example of their criminals to uphold the general purpose of criminal law, which is deterrence and the protection of public safety and morality.

Such an unjust, barbaric, and medieval punishment could only exist in a state like Elben, a country which willingly violates its own agreements and international arrangements to pursue dangerous policy which jeopardizes the peace of Gallo-Germania. An easy example of this is the events between our honorable ally Kadikistan and the conniving Elben.

As always, the North is prepared to receive our blood cousins as refugees.

FOREIGN MINISTER REACTS TO ELBEN'S RANKING
So-called freedom index lists Elben as not free

At a press conference at the foreign ministry, Count von Schlabrendorff addressed the Harton-based Sunbelt Social Studies Institute's new "Freedom Index" which lists states' political and civil rights numerical scores and then categorizes them Free, Partly Free, or Not Free. Elben's political rights score is five and its civil rights score is six, which according to the institute indicates its people are Not Free.

The foreign minister's statement concluded, "As you can see, Elben is listed as Not Free, but look at other states scored by the institute and their scores and judge for yourselves. The various entitles of Engellex are all categorized as Free. Would you all call such places free where slavery is legal and the practice of religion is not? The institute and its biases are plain for all to see."

The lack of political parties in political life, generalised and overwhelming domination of Catholic Tiburan thought in all aspects of life and the still existing estates based institutions, of feudal origin in Elben is what have made us give it the score it has. The recent condemnation at burning at the stake for a person with affiliations to masonic lodges and his exile from Elben only after a long list of nations condemned the Kingdom for their actions and judicial policies.

At the same time, we feel that the aggressive response of the foreign minister of Elben comes mostly from ignorance towards the laws of Natalia. In our Federation, religious people are not persecuted. We are different from the Engellkin nations on that matter, as Natalia is a mosaic of religious cults, going from Coptic Christians to Himyari Ancestor Worshippers. In an effort to defend the cultural values of the aboriginal peoples of Himyar, it is true that the Federation has banned proselytism, since its constitutional inception in 1919, but that doesn't mean that an Elbener visiting Natalia will be fined for his religious faith or the need to practice his own religion.

As for the whole slavery argument, we feel that it is invalid as stems either from ignorance or malevolence towards the justice system of the Engellkin nations. The Natalian "Rehabilitation through Labour Scheme" has been created to offer criminals and delinquents the chance to understand what their illegal actions have done to the society and to try to make amends for their past mistakes. It is by no means slavery, but a chance to let the citizens who have violated the law to begin a second life, as redeemed and guilt free people. It is, we hope a much better way to rehabilitate prisoners, than the burning at the stake.

ANNUAL BLUTSKREUZ CEREMONY HELD
Crown Prince Karl stands in for His Majesty

In the courtyard outside the historic Heilige Kapelle, new knights of the Elbener Brothers were sworn in one by one, each stepping forward to lay left hand on the outstretched Blutskreuz, the original banner upon which Elben's national flag is based, and raise right hand making the sign of the Trinity while swearing the Oath that finalized his entry into the ancient crusading order. Family members of the newly inducted observed the ceremony, which was conducted by the chaplain of the order, Monsignor Karol Sebronski. At the end, all processed into the Kapelle to meet the waiting archbishop of Eschenbach. The new knights separated into two groups and those of the Second Grade who were to profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience did so one by one. A Solemn High Mass was then celebrated.

The ceremonies were attended by Crown Prince Karl in place of His Majesty. This marks the first time in decades that HM as Grand Master of the Brotherhood has not attended. Though the royal chancellery continues to release daily updates on HM's health that report he continues to regain his strength after a lengthy illness, his absence has once more raised concerns that his health is more fragile than officials admit.

FOREIGN MINISTRY ANNOUNCES SUMMIT WITH GUNNLAND
Preparations have been underway since before Christmas to host Queen Julian and entourage

This morning at the foreign ministry, Count von Schlabrendorff briefed the press on up-until-now secret preparations for a summit meeting between Queen Julian of Gunnland and His Majesty the King. The queen is expected to travel to Eschenbach along with the leader of the Gunnish elective body known as the Thing. The foreign minister explained that HM's doctors had given the go-ahead for the summit to proceed. HM would be fully assisted by Crown Prince Karl and Prince Leopold during the high level talks with the visitors from Gunnland.

DEFENSE MINISTRY ANNOUNCES SUBMARINE PURCHASE
Built in Sylvania, subs to be tasked with patrolling Augustines

In a release today, the defense ministry announced the purchase of three submarines. Kept secret until now, the submarines, construction and testing complete, will sail from the yards where they were built in Sylvania to the Augustine Islands where their home port will be the naval base at Karlshaven. Officers and enlisted men have been training hard at Sylvanian naval installations, including the prestigious Whitehall Naval War Academy. These submarines, christened U-101, U-102, and U-103, represent Elben's first real foray into what experts call "blue water." Up until now, the navy has been a coastal and riverine force.

Elben's purpose in Loago is to prevent communist forces from gaining control and repressing the Catholic Wala population.

Elben's defensive measures in the Implarian Ocean are purely defensive in nature.
