Nicosia prepares for possible food shortage

Syracuse

Experts at Ajaccio Royal College and several other academic institutions have announced that the world may face a minor food shortage as a result of the current wars. "We simply have not seen this many large-scale conflicts in the world for quite some time" said Santino Abruzzi, professor of Agricultural Sociology at Ajaccio Royal College. "We expect moderate shortages of coffee, sugar, and some fruits" said Abruzzi.

Abruzzi is the head of the International Agricultural Trends Commission. "We also expect minor shortages of grains, corn, and nuts" concluded Abruzzi. Chancellor Valdez, also present at the press conference, stated that "Nicosia is prepared to fully meet the dietary needs of the population and its military. We will also ensure that the Solaris population does not starve. We are continually working with local leaders to ensure foodstuffs reach the people" said Valdez.

End of the Monarchy

Syracuse

In a surprise move, King Alexander announced this morning that following his reign, the monarchy would end. In place since 1456, the Kosara Dynasty has been one of the world's strongest. "Nicosia has had a monarch since the days of Tibur" said Tomas Arrigo, professor of history at Syracuse University. Many were shocked at the announcement. Under the decree, once King Alexander IV passes away, Nicosia will become a conventional democracy. Those with current titles will retain them and be able to pass them on but they will no longer have any legal status. Should King Alexander die before the installation of the democratic government, the title will pass to his appointed heir but could not be passed on. Traditionally, the throne does not always pass to one's offspring.

"In a modern age, monarchs are like dinosaurs. Ranging in size and stature, type, and all very interesting having evolved through time. However, dinosaurs have no place in this world. There are not words to describe the honor of sitting on the Nicosian throne. We cannot stress the importance of moving forward in our world" said the King.

The Secular Republic respects and honors the decision made by King Alexander and applauds him for taking the first step to move forward in the modern day, where people can take charge of their own fate and see to their own destinies outside the will of one man or woman. We are eager to hear of the upcoming elections and should Nicosia require any trouble in their process, Ahiret will be ready and willing to help.

We are very saddened to hear this news from nearby Nicosia, a fellow monarchy with a royal family similar to our own. We will, however, respect the wishes and sovereignty of her nation, and will not compel his majesty King Alexander IV to do otherwise.

The People's Republic of Vangala welcomes the end of the monarchy as an anachronistic political institution in Nicosia and hopes popular democratic reform continues.

The Anglysh Crown will respect and honor the decision made by King Alexander to end the monarchy in Nicosia, but ask His Majesty to reconsider the total abandonment of a system that has served Nicosia well for so many centuries.

DULWICH, SATURDAY, 26th NOVEMBER 2011

The Right Honourable The Secretary of State has received the Command of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty The Queen-Empress
to make known the following gracious Statement of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty
to the King, and Lordships of the Kingdom of Nicosia.

An Extension of The Queen-Empress' Statement in Council.

TO THE KING, AND LORDSHIPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NICOSIA

I am instructed to EXPRESS on behalf of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty;

The position of Great Engellex has become very difficult of late, because her Majesty the Queen-Empress and her Ministers are seriously alarmed on account of the lunacy of the Nicosian King on one hand and by the intrusive presence of the Federation into the political affairs of Nicosia.

In order to reassure her Majesty and the Ministers, who are engaged with a terribly imperialist and aggressive Federation, it is requested in the name of her Royal and Imperial Engellexic Majesty the Queen-Empress that the King of Nicosia should be induced to agree to a cessation of this national calamity and postpone the dissolution of the Kingdom; so that Great Engellex should be capable of propositions to be made both in Dulwich and in Syracuse.

While Great Engellex is in ignorance as to the degree and reasoning that has compelled the King of Nicosia to abandon his dignity, of course regret this event, and hope King Alexander IV will consent and agree to the prevention of the anti-monarchist and anti-civilised advance taking place in Nicosia.

Great Engellex is not in a position to decide how to appropriately respond to this situation, and is in need of the time and communication with Syracuse.

For the sake of the sovereignty of Nicosia and its people we kindly advice the Kingdom of Engellex to show due restraint. The Queen can rest assured any concerns will be dealt with.

We regret this decision by the King of Nicosia. The Nicosian monarchy has
been as pillar of the international community and something all Nicosians
have loved and cherished for the six centuries it has been in place. As a
monarchy the Talemantine Empire has been in place for over sixteen hundred
years. Monarchy has served many nations and peoples for thousands of years
far longer than the idea of democracy. The Tiburians shifted from a republic
to a monarchical empire that benefited them. We pray that King Alexander
will reconsider plunging his nation into chaos with this graving shift of
government without a public plebiscite.

If Alexander no longer wishes to be king then the King should abdicate in favor
of an heir.

THE Covenant has elected to post a formal inquiry to the
Administrative Territorial Islands of Bartholomew, who may or may not be significantly effected by the Nicosian Empire's abrupt shift towards a Democratic form of Government. This inquiry should not be considered a challenge to the Nicosian Right to Bartholemew, but instead a mundane request for a plan towards the ends of equally empowering Bartholemew Islanders to the same extent Nicosian citizens may be within the distant confines of Nicosia proper.

Office of the Governor, Bartholomew Islands

Mr. Stokes,

First of all, allow me to thank your nation for the concern of my constituency. Second, the term 'Nicosian Empire' is anachronism and has not been used for but a brief time (I understand) in the 1700's. Currently, Nicosia is still forming a democratic system. Plans are to have an elected governor and a parliamentary representative. At present, an elected council is representative of the people and are able to remove an appointed governor.

The people of The Bartholomew Islands are an amalgamation of immigrants and students from all over the world. As you know, our islands are wholly reliant on aid from Nicosia. Nicosia does not claim the right to the Bartholomew Islands, only the right to administer them. Nicosia has maintained that the natural treasures of the islands belong to the world and has done everything in its power to make those treasures available.

I will endeavor to keep you updated.

With respect,
Governor Anton Marco

Eyebrows and protests in wake of democratic changes

Syracuse

With several nations lodging protests and others offering words of support, many Nicosians have expressed their opinions over the proposed move to a democratic government. "For all my life we have had a monarch...it made us......unique. This little island with such respected monarchs" said a teary eyed Micca Dessi, a 71 year old retired mason. Since the 1920's, various movements have formed in a move for democracy. In the 1990's, a campaign gained heavy ground with some sources citing that nearly 40% of Nicosians approved an end to the monarchy.

Some nations have responded with hostility to the idea, accusing the King of "lunacy". Others defended the sovereignty of Nicosia. Several small, but extraordinarily peaceful crowds have gathered in front of the Royal Residence. Signs vary from "One King, One Nation" to "The battery on the Royal watch is out". "We don't know what to say or think. None of us really considered this could happen. I guess we are in shock" said university student Joseph Cassar

The King is expected to address the nation tomorrow in a national broadcast which will also be available for those with satellite.

On behalf of the Republic of Erythea, I would like to express our shock at this sudden change in direction taken by King Alexander. While we know Nicosia had planned to gradually embrace more democratic practices, we did not expect the monarchy, which has been a cultural and political institution in your land for so many centuries, to come to such an abrupt end.

While I shall not be so presumptuous to say that Nicosia is making an error, for I do not remotely claim to know as much about the Nicosian people as their beloved sovereign, I must point out that it is more than a little ironic, almost tragic, that such a decision has been ripped out of the people's hands by a self-described "dinosaur." How is Nicosia to become a functional, democratic state, if such a revolutionary decision, one that changes the heart and nature of their society, has been imposed by a monarch rather than implemented by the people? Do the people even want this? Nicosian press even admits that, even during the peak of pro-republican fervor in the 1990s, only a minority of Nicosians ever desired an end to the monarchy.

I am truly overjoyed that King Alexander has embraced a heartfelt desire to bring democracy to his people. Erythea has prospered under a republican form of government for almost as long as Nicosia has been guided by the hands of her monarch. This is why I urge the king to consider holding a national referendum on this question of the monarchy in Nicosia. The people should be heard on this matter before it the choice is made for them. If the people are truly ready for this radical transformation, they should be able to make the decision on their own behalf.

Sincerely,
Bianca Neri

We welcome the news coming from Nicosia. King Alexander will be remember as a wise king that gave his people the proper government they deserved. Democracy is not perfect, but it is the best government humans have created. Frescania is willing to assist the new government when the time comes.

King addresses nation

Syracuse

As expected, King Alexander addressed the nation on all Nicosian television stations and most radio stations from the Royal Residence. The address, was given in wake of the recent announcement that Nicosia will change to a democratic nation with no monarch. Internation opinions varied but the Nicosian people appear to be shocked. An estimated 8,000 people gathered in front of the Royal Residence to show support to the monarchy.

Jounalio has provided a full transcript of the speech:

Good evening,

Nicosia is an unprecedented cross-road. Since the 15th century, Nicosian monarchs have been among the most highly regarded in the world. Kings and Queens have exerted great influence for such a tiny island. Nicosian monarchs have created a nation and have strengthened a people. We must ask ourselves, what we want for our future.

We look for an answer. When my cousin, your King Nicholas asked me to be his heir and to take the throne, I was reluctant. Sometimes, duty is thrust upon us. I accepted. I could simply abdicate in favor of somebody else. That is not an option for me, I have a duty to not only serve as King and to serve my cousin's request but to also serve the interests of the Nicosian people. It was the belief of Nicholas that Nicosia would become a democracy. For 20 years, we have moved towards an elected government that represents the people. We have a choice to continue our path or to change course.

There has been talk from other nations, news pundits, and politicians. Some say that Nicosia's arrival at this point was 'sudden'. A road of 20 years is anything but sudden. Only Nicosia can decide her fate. Only her people can decide. On Friday, I have ordered a national referendum. All persons 16 or older are invited to cast a vote. I will accept the decision of the referendum no matter the results and will endeavor to uphold them.

G-d Bless.

Referendum results in, King addresses Nicosia on outcome

Syracuse

During a tense weekend of vote counting, the Royal Government has been silent on the outcome until this afternoon. 43% voted in favor of a constitutional monarchy followed by 26% who favored the monarchy as is. A large 31% favored a full abolition of the monarchy. The ballots featured 3 choices, each with about a paragraph of explanation to accompany them. Voting centers were nearly all equipped with braille ballots.

For many years, the majority of municipalities and all provinces have had elected governments. Now it appears that a nationally elected government will meet for the first time, sometime next year. "We will endeavor to bow to the wishes of the people. The monarchy, so long as the people wish it, will remain at the core of Nicosia. The exact future remains to be unseen. We will form a new constitution and a new government. This will take time. I, in the coming months, will call upon the elected of this land to help form these new columns of reason and righteousness; justice and strength; vision and fortitude" said the King in a televised address.

The Chancellor's Office has promised to furnish further information in the coming days.

DULWICH, TUESDAY, 06th DECEMBER 2011

The Right Honourable The Secretary of State has received the Command of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty The Queen-Empress
to make known the following gracious Statement of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty
to the King, and Lordships of the Kingdom of Nicosia.

An Extension of The Queen-Empress' Statement in Council.

TO THE KING, AND LORDSHIPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NICOSIA

I am instructed to EXPRESS on behalf of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty;

Whilst that the necessity of a constitution being granted to the people of Nicosia is universally admitted, that it is rendered more urgent by the accumulation of Power in the hands of a single National Institution without a popular mandate, by the prohibition of popular opinion and demonstration, and by the concentration of almost all authority in the hands of a hereditary monarch, we cannot learn, that any progress whatever is made in the accomplishment of those solemn and repeated promises any farther than those pro-reform publications seek to enlighten us to.

We have every reason to believe, that within these very next weeks beyond this nothing will be done on this matter, and that if anything is determined as to the Constitution of Nicosia itself, what it is, is unknown but to the King of Nicosia alone.

We call upon the King of Nicosia to the need of rapid and secure organisation of delegations to be elected for the purpose of effecting a National Constitution that shall found a new tradition of Democratic Representation at a National level.

Those attached to the diplomatic missions of Great Engellex in Syracuse feel, that the King has committed himself in his promises further than what should be advised, and that he should now protract the matter of constitutional-monarchism , as far as suitably can be done. A constitution should be offered, and indeed popularly formed, that the inconveniences attributed to popular representation may be thoroughly embraced, but that the restraints placed upon the Sovereign should not render itself obsolete against a new Executive Government.

Should the King of Nicosia find himself an enemy to monarchism, with respect to his controversy and ignorance aimed at the Royal and Imperial Heads of State in Europe, her Majesty’s Ministers in Dulwich should be encouraged to press the matter of abdication to Syracuse.

Chancellor announces formation of Constitutional Commission, responds to statement from Dulwich

Syracuse

Following the results of the national referendum and statements of the King, Chancellor Valdez announced a rough plan for a shift to a constitutional monarchy. Valdez outlined an initial plan, citing that the district's elected officials will form a constitutional commission. The plan calls for all 45 elected representatives to amend the current constitution and codify new election laws. "It is only right that this Kingdom's elected officials continue to chart a new course for Nicosia" said Chancellor Valdez.

Chancellor Valdez also responded to a recent statement made by Great Engellex. "The plan is still in its early stages. This will be a process that will take some months. It is our belief that this is something that must be done properly. The doubt cast by the government of Dulwich is quite disturbing. Over the past 2 decades, under King Alexander, Nicosia has made numerous reforms towards a constitutional monarchy. This is a process that will take time to be done properly. Rushing something of this importance may be done in Engellex; but not here" concluded the Chancellor.

Former Chancellor Josef Bergessio (1994-1996) called Engellex's statement "condescending" and "in the manner a parent speaks to a teenager". Bergessio has been a vocal critic of the current international climate and has expressed interest in holding office again in the future.

Reports: Nicosian forces uncover mass graves in Solaren

Metz

Reports are coming in, yet to be confirmed, that Nicosian forces have uncovered mass graves located near a quarry. The reports state that Nicosian forces liberated a forced labor camp in the foothills of La Spina. Reports state that the mass graves were found several days later. Jounalio will report any further developments.
