Therefore, also we invite His Eminence the Prince-Bishop of Gouw-Marken for a state-visit to Eiffelland. We envision to a visit to the Katholische Universität Köln, whose faculty of biology investigated the crop disease that destroyed last year's harvest in Gouw Marken. A visit to the Technische Universität Köln, which also teaches and investigates agricultural techniques, would be on the program as well. Of course we would also visit the factories of Magirus-Deutz where agricultural machines are manufactured, as well as several farms aroud Köln. The Prince-Bishop would be a guest of the King. What game is Markstad playing?

It seems our country is putting its feet on unknown grounds as it is playing poker at high level. We are informed about some strange things that happened these last days.

A source at the palace has told our newspaper the Prince-Bishop has had an loan offer from a foreign government. We are yet to be confirmed which country is involved. At least it must be a country that is interested in investing in Gouw Marken and thus a country that benefits from a rushed industrialization of our homeland. The Prince-Bishop has said building railways and roads, power plants and mechanization of the agriculture is priority. We cannot undo our feeling that Eiffelland’s car industry has major interests in this project. Or is it the imperialists from Bourgogne? We are not the first to acknowledge the sophisticated penetration of those companies into the economics and politics and into our lives. We’ve seen it in other countries. We’ve seen the consequences and revolutions. And how will our county, that couldn’t feed its own population, repay this loan? Will the establishment lay the very foundations social disaster?

Maybe no one hasn’t noticed I, but we, at Markense Mededelingen, have. Our Prince-Bishop has had two invitations for a foreign state visit. Of course he cannot accept at this moment: by law our leader cannot leave the country. When in 1054 Prince-Bishop Hendrik III left the country, his brother took over. Therefore, the leader cannot leave. Will the National Assemble change this law? And by doing so, will the National Assemble recognize a further centralization of power? Will it once again put Markstad more in charge of national matters and will it choose for limitation of regional power? Which means less power for the abbots and aristocracy who make 68% of the National Assemble?

The polite answer to the governments of Eiffelland and Kadikistan were a statement. The answer to the King of Eiffelland was given by the personal secretary of the Prince-Bishop, and had the address of the Palace of ‘s Bisschopsnieuwkasteel, the personal residence of the Prince-Bishop. The message is clear: the aristocracy of Eiffelland is regarded very high and is seen as the equal of the Gouw Marken leader. Catholics at the same table, one happy family.

The invitation of Kadikistan is answered by the secretary of the Princ-Bishop at palace Ten Steene, the working place of our leader. It is nothing more than a formal message. It looks like the socialist Leninovist leaders of Kadikistan are not taken serious by the Markstad aristocracy. But let us not forget the Kadiki oil will be important to our country. The answer to Kadikistan influence the public opinion towards Markstad in vast parts of Gouw Marken.

And what about other countries? Will this move in politics towards more relations mean more countries will get involved into our economic life? It is surprisingly quiet in the the kingdom that borders the north of Gouw Marken. And as far as we have heard, it will stay quiet in the south. The same source at the palace has told us “it will take a lot of Justizan sunshine to melt the mount of ice between the two countries”. No cappuccino at Markstad in the near future…

Prince-Bishop can leave the country, road to economic change open

The National Assemble has voted three laws in today’s session. All of them are remarkable and can create change in both national as international politics of Gouw Marken.

In a first voting round a historic law was abrogated: the Prince-Bishop is allowed to leave the country. Since the middle ages the leader of Gouw Marken was prohibited to go abroad, thus avoiding anyone to take over the throne in his absence. It was also made very clear that the Prince-Bishop was firstly ruler of the country (Prince) and secondly a man of the church (Bishop). A Gouw Marken Prince-Bishop has never attended a concilium since the middle ages, ad by doing so the church of Gouw Marken became an independent established church within the catholic family.

The Prince-Bishop can leave the country, for 21 days, and for state matters. The aristocratic representatives – not in favor for this change – asked in a last move that every single time the Prince-Bishop will leave in the future he must ask for approval by the national Assemble. But clergy and city representatives voted against this amendment. The bill was passed with 68% (Clergy: 37% of 41%; Cities: 19% of 32%; Counties (aristocracy): 12% of 27%). Surprisingly the Clerics, known for their consisting voting as one group, has supported this move.

In a second vote, the immunity of ecclesiastical lands was reaffirmed. The abbeys will not lose their jurisdictional and political powers over their lands. The city representatives were thought to vote against (they want change, especially in economic matters), but a fair amount of them supported the vote. The County representatives, supporters of regional power, supported too. Passed with 85%.

In a last vote a bill passed that makes it possible to abstract land from local jurisdiction in cases of national wealth fare. These strips of land are limited in their surface and can be at the most 150 meters width. They will be put under supervision of national committees. There is also a limitation of 3,5% of the surface of a county that can be claimed by this law. Of course, this law is meant to be used for the construction of nationwide railroads, motorways, power lines and canals. The aristocracy voted mostly against, city and clergy representatives voted mostly in favor. The bill passed with 71%.

The Prince-Bishop has sent a delegation to Gotenrijk with official “koningsbrief”

As required, they left on foot in Markstad, were given a horse at the city gates and drove to the border. This old tradition dates from the middle ages, when Gotenrijk was the privileged companion of the Gouw Marken counties. Whenever a Prince-bishop was chosen, a herald on a horse drove in three days to the borders to present the new leader to the people of Gotenrijk with the traditional “koningsbrief” (kungenbrev). Then he waited for six days at the border and when he received no message in those six days,the King of Gotenrijk recognized the Gouw Marken sovereignty and leadership in its territories. In some cases, the messengers were obstructed to reach the border and the Prince-Bishop was thus legally recognized. The herald was given the place of ambassador in Gotenrijk.

Carolus Livinus Baron van Schepbeecq de Wimpere, an aristocrat from the town of Lijdermonde, a town situated on the south border of Scania (Schaunië in Markens), was given the horse. He thus will be the new ambassador of Gouw Marken in Gotenrijk. Baron van Schepbeecq de Wimpere, 47, fluently in Götamål (Gotentaal) and the dialect of Shaunië.

After years of closed borders, from both sides, a new era has begun for the north!

Trains and tea

In addition to what is dicussed in the Riksdag of Gotenrijk, the secretary of the Prince-Bishop has said a railway through the country’s northeast is a possibility to be further discussed with Schonefors. A reliable connetion between Gotenrijk and Schaunië is one of the concerns of Gouw Marken too. As soon as the diplomatic delegation to Gotenrijk is settled, the matter will be further looked into. And with the political changes, that make it possible to claim land for building railroads, a solution is not that far away.

Gouw Marken traders are expecting a higher demand in tea. The Koloniale Warengilde (KWG), the guild of mechants trading in exotic products is looking for new providers who can bring their goods to Westeinde harbor, where the main import warehouse of the guild is located.

Nationaal Ontwikkelingscommitee (NOC - National Development Committee) in charge of economic changes

A special committee will manage the economic development of the country. It will get a range of tasks going from agriculture reform to roads, railroads, building estates and harbors to financial loans to the guilds to reform their activities. It will be a huge step, and a difficult one. Not much is known about it yet , but talks are going on and it is for sure the president will be appointed by the Prince-Bishop. He will get veto right in the board of directors. More details are yet to be revealed.

Customs to be centralized in a national frontier guard

The customs services are badly organized, mostly under supervision of the local counties or cities. All o them have different taxes, procedures and county laws. In a first stage a national border guard will be created to operate in harbors and at the border with Gotenrijk. The whole project will as well create jobs in those border regions of which many are very rural and poor.

After four days, a very close competition. Eiffelandian Hans Hörmann has made a surpising come-back, after a solo escape today taking 3 minutes and thus on top of the ranking, followed by Peter Vanhoof (1:25) and Klaas Tereinde (2:07).

De Werker, a formal local newspaper in Trudostad, has lowered its purchase cost by 30% and has increased its number of pages. The newspaper is available almost countrywide, except in some distance counties in the far northeast. It seems to become a widely read newspaper in Gouw Marken. It is yet not known where all the funding comes from.

The cycling competition “Ronde of Gouw Marken” has ended Sunday by a victory of Klaas Tereinde, reaching the finish in a last etappe in Markstad by ending in total 2,05 minutes before the second one, Eiffellandian Hans Hörmann. Bartolomeus Ginderbuiten came in third position. Favourite Peter Vanhoof had left the competition four days before after a nasty tumble on the road.

All vicars are asked to keep a close eye to foreigners in their parish, especially those coming from the troubled countries Bolonesvia and Veniasufia. A register of foreigners must be created.
