Millerand drops militant stance against communist states

Prime Minister Millerand at work, earlier today

Paris | Royaume de Belmont:

The Foreign Office has announced that the Plantard Foreign Policy Directives, which called for funding anti-communist guerillas and was very harsh on communist nations, has been scrapped and in its place Premier Millerand has appointed a new foreign minister, Jean-Jacques Rémusat, and has gone 180 degrees on the anti-communist policies of the Plantard government. The Foreign Office also announced that the embargo on communist states, which had been in place since 2002, had been lifted indefinitely. The Foreign Office's spokesperson also said that the Government of Belmont would "seriously reconsider its future interactions with the communist governments" while she reaffirmed that communist nations also had a duty to "not fund insurgents".

Prime Minister Millerand arrived at Grosvenor earlier today and has since then been in contact with opposition leaders. The Ministry of Information has also scheduled a press conference for the new Prime Minister and several members of the international press have been called to the press conference. On Monday, the PM is scheduled to be interviewed by a prominent Wieser journalist, something which is undoubtedly part of repairing Belmont's international image.

The People's Republic welcomes the reversal of recent, provocative actions by the Belmontien government, in particular the decisions to end support for terrorists and the unjust embargo applied to Europe's revolutionary states. However we will continue to excersise caution when dealing with Paris until it is clear there is a stable, amicable foreign policy.

Foreign Minister Marcelieu leaves for Batavie on invitation of Mr. Van Vliet

[img2]albumid=85&pictureid=1320[/img2]
Foreign Minister Marcelieu talks to reporters before leaving for Batavie

Paris | Royaume de Belmont:

Within a few hours of being appointed, the new foreign minister of Belmont, Jean-Jacques Marcelieu, was invited by his counterpart in Batavie to discuss the status of the bilateral ties between the two states. The Foreign Office was quick to accept the invitation and Premier Millerand also supported the foreign minister's visit. The meeting, which is the first such since 1992, between Belmontien officials and communist ones, would most likely focus on finding ways to repair the broken ties. Mr. Marcelieu, who just celebrated his seventy fifth birthday, is known for his remarkable statesmanship and his great knowledge on the affairs of communist nations. Having served as High Commissioner of Belmont to Batavie from 1971 to 1973, he was the best person to be chosen for the meeting which lies ahead. Already, several communist nations have welcomed the policy changes by the Millerand government and the opposition has called off the vote of no confidence against the government.

Insiders suggest that the government will be hoping to undo the seven years of the economic embargo upon the communist states of the world and the Foreign Minister would be talking to his counterpart about some of the measures Belmont plans on taking to do so. Analysts suggest that the foreign minister should also try to bring the topic of importing Batavien gas into Belmont through Skansige Staatsunion to help with the precarious situation of gas supply in Belmont.

The public has largely been supportive of the measures taken by the Millerand government to remove the animosity between Paris and Vlaanderen which has existed since 2002. In a poll by us, we found that 21%, of those polled, opposed the recent measures by the Millerand government, while 49% were happy with the Millerand government and the remaining thirty percent were not sure. The PCB, as well, has started to rise in the polls since the resignation of Mr. Plantard and is fast regaining chances to win the next elections.

Prime Minister Millerand appoints new cabinet, includes opposition politicians

[img2]albumid=140&pictureid=1322[/img2]
Premier Millerand at work in Grosvenor House

Paris | Royaume de Belmont:

Since being appointed, the Prime Minister has been busy trying to form a new cabinet, something in which he has been successful. Fifteen members of the Parliament, today, were officially appointed by the Prime Minister as his Ministers, with the Queen's assent. In comparison to the Plantard cabinet, the new one is very small, where the Plantard cabinet had a total of sixty seven ministers while the new Millerand cabinet only has the fifteen and it also includes four opposition MPs (2 PPL, 2 Social Democrats). While the Plantard cabinet was larger it was also more inefficient and more susceptible to corruption.

The Prime Minister also said that the remaining two and a half months before the elections, would show that the new PCB government was different and that change could only come after the Plantard era's radical policies were completely reversed. The Prime Minister also said that the PCB was returning back to its golden age with the removal of Mr. Plantard from office.

Today, the Prime Minister has left Paris and gone to visit the massive Marseilles Shipyards and preside over the opening ceremonies of its newer extensions. Millerand, who has put industrial growth at the top of his agenda, sees the recent sudden boom in Belmont's economy the proof of sound conservative financial policies. The prime minister has also vowed to keep the tax rates under 5% and the interest rate fixed at 8%.

:!: Police raid headquarters of passport forgery and counterfeiting ring:

Upon a tip by the ISE, the police in the city of Orleans raided a house located in the Vaudes sector of the city. A gunfight ensued, which the police managed to tip in their favor within minutes, and by the end, the Orleans Police arrested fifteen men, five of whom had been killed or injured during the brief gunfight. Upon entering the five room house, the police found millions of euros worth of counterfeit currency, and hi-tech equipment to make it, in the basement of the house. The police also found dozens of forged Skån, Levant and Bataviën passports.

The investigation into the matter has been taken over by the ISE, due to the case's nature and possible involvement of foreign nations to use Belmont as a place to plan their espionage operations. The ISE has reportedly contacted the Skån, Levant and Bataviën intelligence services to inform them of the serious security threat which existed for their nations.

OOC: Belmontien press short form. Drei refers to things related to Belmont as Belmonti, while the correct term is Belmontien. While it might be the correct term, the Belmontien media thinks otherwise.

OOC: Skånsige isn't even a term in Swedish. Skånskige is a proper name, it means Scania (land) in Swedish.

Under interrogation James A, as he is being called, revealed that the Anglian intelligence agency, RIA, had started financing them earlier this year and the aim of the support was to flood the Belmontien economy with counterfeit notes to devalue the Belmontien Franc and to make fake Belmontien passports and transfer them to Anglia, for use by RIA agents.
