Government Privatizes Coal Industry First

Today Commerce Secretary Ottavia Questi opened up the coal industry for sell to the private sector. The government corporation which oversaw all the empire's coal mines, Imperial Coal Company, will be selling mines and property to foriegn and domestic companies. Ms. Questi stated that the prizatization will be good for the long term survival of the empire economically. "If this goes well we will proceed with plans to further privitize other industries."

Consistory Announces Anniversary Celebration

The year 2010 has been one of significant importance in Talemantine modern history. The beginning of the year began a year long festivities across the empire to celebrate the 1400th anniversary of the ascension of the De Vesci Dynasty. This has also marked a years of reforms and privatization on the behalf of the imperial government to grow further economic activity and wealth. This coupled with less censorship during the rigorous campaigns for Mayor of Talemaniki and other mayoral races throughout the nation. 2010 is proving to be a pivotal time for this ancient empire.

While throughout the year there will be small continuous celebrations in various localities for the anniversary, the culmination of these celebrations will be in April on the day of the coronation of Beniamino I, the first De Vesci monarch. The consistory has released a preliminary schedule of the April events. The celebration will begin with a coronation ceremony of Waylon X to mark the date of Beniamino I's coronation. The ceremony will use the ancient regalia of Beniamino I, of which a few pieces still survive, which are considered modest compared to the modern imperial crown jewels of the empire and other monarchies. The ancient crown jewels have not been used in a ceremony in centuries. The consistory also announced that the crown of Beniamino I, along with other ancient imperial artifacts including the Crown and Sword of Horace the Great, will be traveling on display to various countries leading up to the coronation event.

Also the Senate will be officially convened to mark the date and to address any official business of state. A special anniversary ball will be held at the Imperial Palace following the coronation ceremony and the proclamation of the Senate. The Consistory has since sent an invitation to every head of state and government, including states that have poor relations with the empire. The invitation was also extended to the leader of international organization such as the Council of Nations and the respective heads of the major alliances. The empire expects the celebrations, especially in April, to bring in lots of tourist revenues as the empire celebrates one of the oldest dynasties in the world.

Accompanying the celebrations will be a heightened level of security during the April festivities.

Empire to seek new relations with Civilized Muslim States

Throughout most of the Empire history its foreign policy has been defined by certain aspects of both ideology and theology. During the early centuries it promoted Orthodoxy opposed to the Northern Catholics. During the centuries around the crusades the Empire became the bastion of Christendom against the Muslim invaders. This Christianity (orthodox) versus Islam dynamic formulated the basis of Talemantine foreign policy for centuries, especially when dealing with Muslim states. The adoption of Orthodoxy as a national identity in the face of the Talemantine-Arab wars has persisted to this day, though increasingly secularization among states and the rise of communism and its offshoots and supplanted the Muslim issue as a major focal point on Talemantine foreign policy.

Now Chancellor of the Consistory, Bishop Alexis Florioli, announced a change in that dynamic. While the empire maintains that it is a firstly Christian nation, "We will embrace the friendship and cooperation of our civilized muslim brethren." Chancellor Florioli went on to state what exactly he meant by "civilized" muslims. "Civilized states such as Hajr and Abnat are examples of muslim states that promote peace and cooperation despite theological differences."

In a roundabout way this means secular motivated states over religious motivated states, where "civilized" means that religion does not play an overt issue. This is most shown in Hajr where loyalty to the crown over religion and in Abnat where loyalty to the state and republicanism over religion. These were pointed in contrast to Kediri, the empire's notable muslim boogieman, and Wazistan, where theocracy regimes remain in place.

While this effort of Florioli will no doubt bring its own hypocritical accusations against the Talemantine government, where a ranking bishop of the Orthodox Church is chancellor and the extreme closeness between the church and the crown. Despite these natural criticisms the effort to reach out to parts of the muslim world remains to proceed to be built upon. Recently the Kediri Pretender was named as the Empire's official muslim liaison.

Though the desire for friendly relations with the Republic of Anbat is duly and appropriately appreciated by the Anbati government, the Cabinet of Ministers wishes to remind the Talemantine government and the Talemantine Chronicle that the majority of Anbati citizens are of Christian faith.

Even while as a sign of goodwill the Cabinet is understanding of the factual error of Bishop Florioli, and even while the Republic recognizes the contributions of our Islamic community towards Anbati culture as a whole, I have instructed the Anbati ambassador to Talemantros to demand an immediate apology from the Talemantine Chronicle on behalf of the over 36 million Anbati Christians.

Oltremare Catholics come to the Empire

In an agreement reached with the Kingdom of Oltremare, approximately four thousand Oltremaren Catholics will be coming to the empire. When Oltremare exiled its Catholic population the empire opened its arms to these people without a home. The prompting for this move surrounds the similar culture both the empire and Oltremare share.

The Talemantine government chartered several airliners to travel to Oltremare to shuttle the people to imperial lands. "The ex-nationals of Oltremare are welcomed and the government will look to help these people adjust to our society and become imperial citizens." stated Secretary of War, General Ezio Laconi. The government also sent large military cargo planes to load personal belongings from Oltremare to Talemaniki.

The majority of the financial burden for the transportation fell on the empire after negotiations with Oltremare. This has brought some criticism against the Consistory for agreeing to the deal, but Bishop Florioli spoke about the decision. "It is not the interests of the empire on what Oltremare does with its population. We have seen far worse at the hands of this planets communist nations and only rarely does the world speak. We only care about the well being of those leaving Oltremare for what ever reason. We speak the same language as in the Kingdom and other similar cultural aspects. The exiled Oltremarens will find it significantly easier to integrate into Talemantine society than that of any other country."

The four thousand Oltremarans are being taken to various holding facilities on the outer islands. At these facilities they will undergo medical examinations and to confer and check information. The medical examinations will let the officials know of any diseases these people may have before entering the general population and to give them appropriate medical care. The information check will be to help that families get to remain together. The officials will also work with the families to find a home in the empire. The officials will also be working to find jobs for the Oltremarens. It is expected for the majority of the Catholics to be place in the Province of Sicily, where the empire's largest catholic population reside.

The Empire has also stated it is able to take in the 1000 catholics that remain on Oltremare and that the kingdom deems "radical." Currently there is no word on whether those 1000 will soon be headed to the empire or not.

"War is unlikely unless Carentania attacks"

The tensions arisen from the current diplomatic spat between the Talemantine Empire and Carentania has been the closest in recent decades, but they may not ignite. Every few years both nations exchanged verbal threats and the slight occasional military buildup, but the conflict never usually boils over into conflict. While the current crisis is far more heated with both armies rushing toward the river that has been the border since the late 20s, many speculators believe it will not come to blows. This is most relevant with the nonchalant attitude the Talemantine leadership has taken with the current crisis.

“War is unlikely unless the Carentanians attack our forces protecting our sovereign soil.” Stated Vice Chancellor and Secretary of State Carmine Gavallo. “Carentania has been a thorn in the side of the Empire since they immigrated to our lands over a millennium ago and they will continue to be a thorn in our side for years to come.”

Still forces in Seleucia prepare for a Carentanian attack with more grounds forces and air craft being sent to the Western province. With the Carentanian’s sticking by their guns by refusing to recognize the Levantine brokered peace treaty, they technically refuse to recognize that the cessation of war ever happened. The Secretariat of State has been pushing for regional partners to help in pressuring the Carentanians into recognizing the treaty.

“Understand that as long as the so called Workers’ Republic continues to not recognize the 1927 treaty our two states are at a state of war. We will defend ourselves and we will shot any soldier that crosses that river.” Said Secretary Gavallo.

When asked about the comment made by Carentanian Commissar for Foreign Affairs Dusan Mejic Secretary Gavallo stated, “In 1943 the Carentanians faced the Levantines, not us and if war is the course that they chose then we will certainly repeat the victory of 1927.”

Talemantine Army will not increase forces on border

A few days ago Assciated Press reported that Carentania was sending more forces to the border with the empire. That has been troubling people throughout the empire especially in Seleucia. War Secretary, General Ezio Laconi, announced the empire's reaction to the Carentanian moves.

"The Consistory met to decide on a course of action following our neighbor's aggressive move to escalate the current situation. The Carentanian moves are meant to turn this disagreement into a war and to bait the empire into starting this war. The Consistory has decided to not play into their game. In a decision sanctioned by the emperor we will not be increasing our troop levels. We have maintained a formidable force in the region and see that force as sufficent to defend our homelands. Our forces in Seleucia remain on the highest alert and will remain as such until further notice." - General Ezio Lacnoni.

Since the lates 1920s following the end of the war the Imperial Armed Forces have maintained a force of aproximently 100,000 men. The only time it increased beyond that number was during the 40s while the Great War and the Levantine-Carentanian war raged on, when numbers reached close to 150,000.

The Consistory's decision not to increase troop levels to match the incresement of Carentania now makes Carentania the agitater in the crisis and places the ball in their court. Secretary of State Carmine Gavallo is stated to be preparing for a trip to Cortana, who has wished for a renewed relationship with the empire, and to travel to Hajr. At the begining of the conflict the Empire had asked Hajr to mediate the crisis between Carentania and the Empire, and his trip is roumored to be to set up that mediation.
