SUMMARIZED VERSION

SITUATION TENSES UP ACROSS THE NORTH
According to all reports, the situation in Batavie is fast approaching a civil war level. With the BRA in control of the northern city of Spa and making gains in other parts of Batavie, the government, in Vlaanderan, still shaky after the death of the former Supreme Leader and the situation with Skånskige still as tense as ever, the international community has started to take more interest in the former leader of the, now disbanded, IRB. The GA of the CoN discussed the situation and now the CoNSC is discussing the situation.

Already, there is talk of the international community intervening and installing a democratic government in Batavie, sending peacekeepers to enforce, rather than maintain, peace and some nations have even said that they would send naval fleets to Batavie to "take care of the problem." The Government's response on the issue has been that of restraint and the Foreign Office has praised the responsible role being played by the Oikawan government and representatives in the issue.

DEFSTAT RAISED IN FACE OF TENSIONS
The Prime Minister has authorized the armed forces to raise the defense status of the nation to LEVEL 3. The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement in which it was said that the Belmontien armed forces had been given full permission to be ready to defend "Belmontien shores in face of threats emanating from the north". The armed forces have also been authorized to extend the range of their patrols and radar.

The Belmontien Strategic Forces have also been put on alert. The situation in Batavie and Scania has gotten Paris quite paranoid and the Government is taking measures to keep Belmont secure and to keep the defense level high.

BELMONT READY TO SUPPLY PEACEKEEPERS, SAYS PREMIER
The Premier, in a press conference held at Grosvenor House, has said that Belmont was willing to supply peacekeepers and would actively aid the CoN to preserve the sanctity of the CoNSC's resolution in regards to the situation in Batavie. Mme. Martinique also commended the BRA and the Batavien government for coming to a, temporary, ceasefire agreement and said that the responsible role undertaken by both parties showed that both wanted to avoid strife in their country. Mme. Martinique also said that the situation in Batavie called for the people of that country to make their decision in a free and fair referendum where they would best decide which path is best for their country.

Mme. Martinique said "so as to find a permanent solution to the issue, it is essential that the people choose who they want to lead them... do the people of Batavie want the current system to continue or do they want change? That is something, which I can never answer, no one in this room can answer... only the Batavien people have the right to answer that question. The international community must call for a free and fair referendum. If the situation is not resolved definitively, the two parties will keep up the hostilities."

BATAVIË - "FAILED STATE"?
By Ardeshir Cowasjee
It is no secret that, the People's Republic of Batavië is on its last legs. Vlaanderan faces a crisis of leadership, large swaths of its territory are under the control of the BRA and the risks of war between that country and its neighbor have greatly increased. With the government's attention split on two fronts, at a time when they are reeling from the loss of their Supreme Leader, the international community has realized - far too late in my opinion - that the current situation can not continue for long.

But even if the CoN is successful in coming to an agreement, I don't think that the situation will improve in Batavië just by the deployment of 6,500 troops. Whether they like it or not, the BRA has the support of the people, their mantra of democracy and freedom from the oppression of the communist system has struck a chord, especially with the youth. Even the communist government has understood that the BRA is a potent force, their representative at the CoN has said that the peacekeepers shall act as a buffer between the two sides. Gone are the days of a defiant Batavië, the leader of the IRB, the heart of international communism and now that country's current setup is shattered and the people are demanding change.

While de Graaf Sr. was able to keep an iron fist over the running of the state, the ability of his son to do the same is highly dubious. The new supreme leader comes at one of the worst times possible to assume office. Regular articles crop up in the Associated Press which claim that there are rifts in the CPB and disagreements are arising between the high ranking politicians. And at a time when leadership should be united, if such things are happening in Vlaanderan I do doubt the ability of that government to exert its writ over its territory.

Premier authorizes defense readiness increase as more foreign fleets enter the Great Sea

Since yesterday, the situation across the north has tensed up even further. With the Security Council delaying to implement a resolution, the General Assembly trying to force through change, the sudden "awakening" of the Levant and the deployment of fleets from Oikawa, Shcherbatskaya, Austerland and Kyiv in the Great Sea, the Government has gone into hyperdrive. Having ordered the Marseilles Fleet to immediate readiness and the immediate deployment of reserve ships from the Champlain fleet to the western coast, the Premier has also authorized the army to put coastal defenses on alert as well.

During these tense times, Anglia, an ally of Belmont, is stuck right in the middle of the problem zone. Realizing that, their government has called upon Paris to send a naval deployment over to their western islands. The Strategic Forces of Belmont have also started giving more radar coverage to, both, Anglia and Einland in the current situation.

At present, the Belmontien delegation to the CoN has remained silent and experts suggest that it has been asked to do so by the government, which is waiting for a formal policy to be announced by the EDF. So far, Belmont has shown restraint in its statements and is uneasily silent over the matter.

Trouble in Marquette... AGAIN!!!

According to leaked government documents, in Marquette, a communist insurgent outfit is arming itself to carry out hostile actions against that state. Called the Avant Politique de Marquette (APM), and already commanding support from 55,000 members and 80,000 supporters, has enraged Paris. According to government sources, the Prime Minister, herself, has seen the recent turn of events in Marquette as "holding great potential to harm Belmont and its image abroad".

Premier Martinique, who will be greeting the Olympic Torch when it reaches Paris, has reportedly issued a notice to all police units along the border with Marquette to intensify efforts to block any flow of traffic of insurgents between Belmont and Marquette. The Prime Minister has also set up a task force which has been charged with apprehending any Belmontien nationals involved in supplying arms to the APM.

PARLIAMENT TO LOOK INTO APPLYING FOR FULL EDF MEMBERSHIP

Acting on orders direct from the Queen, the Chambre des Communes Sub Committee for Foreign Affairs has started proceedings to look into Belmont joining the European Defense Federation as a LEVEL One member, bringing the Kingdom of Belmont into the folds of the EDF charter and an active member of the that alliance. This comes after Premier Martinique was successful in obtaining Belmontien induction into the EDF's PfS program, last month. The Palace issued a statement in which it was said that they wanted the Parliament to gauge the viability of Belmont joining the EDF at a future date.

In the past, Paris has shied away from joining the EDF due to a perception that joining an alliance would make Belmont lose its independence and the threat its posed of being dragged into a conflict which did not affect Belmont. While campaigning, Premier Martinique had made it a campaign promise to get Belmont to L2 membership in the EDF. Upon assuming the Premiership, she held talks with Franconian statesmen and Belmont was inducted into the Partnership for Stability.

The Queen's decision to look into the viability of joining the EDF has been made after the issue became heated in Parliament. While the Queen's directive has called for the Parliament to look into the matter, it has specified that Belmont would not apply to join the EDF's upper tiers of membership in the coming months.

As strong believers and defenders of democracy, we will respect the choice of the Belmonti government and thus those who elected them. However we do urge our Belmonti friends to carefully consider both the positive and the negative side of joining the honourable EDF and explore the other options before making a final decision.

The Parliament is merely looking into the possibility of applying for L1 membership into the EDF and not to apply. The Parliament is merely conducting a Royally-sanctioned study into the matter to better determine our options, in regards to alliance politics.

Belmont to stand by Abruzzi efforts to control Orion insurgency

In the past few weeks, the situation in the southern country of Abruzicstan has continued to worsen. The assassination of President McVeigh and the exposing of a political scandal has created doubts in the minds of Belmontien politicians that the political setup in Chieti is not strong enough to handle the bloody insurgency which is rattling the Abruzzi region of Orion. Having offered to come to Paris to talk with Mme. Martinique, the new President of Abruzicstan, President Loddi, couldn't have come at a worst time. His country is in crisis mode, the economy is degenerating and the people are living in constant fear.

It is under such circumstances that, the Minister of Defense, Gen.(R) Jean-Charles Taugourdeau, has said in Parliament that Belmont could not let the situation get worse and that Paris was ready to send in forces to "take the enemy, head on." The MoD also said that the Belmontien defense aid to the country would be increased by several hundred million francs and the armed forces would deploy "up to 12,500" in the Orion region and would work in tangent with the Abruzzi ground and air forces to tackle the insurgents.

Premier Martinique to embark on diplomatic tour

The Prime Minister has issued a statement in which she has announced that she will visit a total of 18 countries, ranging from allied states to states with which Belmont has little to no contact. The tour aims to further develop Mme. Martinique's foreign policy agenda and will aim to remove misunderstandings and misconceptions of the past and will attempt to bring Belmont closer together to all the countries in the tour itinerary.

The following countries will be visited:
  • Anbat
  • Anglia
  • Aquitania
  • Confederate States
  • Cortuna
  • Eiffeland
  • Einland
  • Franken
  • Hajr
  • Khalistan
  • Marquette
  • Montelimar
  • Oikawa
  • Radilo
  • Ratomkira
  • Shcherbatskaya
  • Wiese

We are very pleased to hear of Belmont’s words towards the situation in Abruzicstan. We too are considered with the situation, and as I am sure you already know, we have decided to intervene on the favor of the Abruzzi Government.

I am also very pleased to hear of Premier Martinique’s want to meet with me. I will gladly meet with the Premier and am looking forward to it. I hope that this can be the start of good relations between our two nations.

With Regards,
Sal Capriani
President of the Cortonan Republic

Belmont wishes to repair damaged relationships with countries across Europe yet to ignore Vangala in this proposed tour of goodwill, which we find both startling and offensive.

RAID IN ORLÉANS
ISE raids headquarters of APM operations in Belmont

With the government sending delegations to Fond du Loc to discuss the APM and its potential links to Belmont, the Insitute de Sécurité d'État, the Kingdom's main intelligence agency, has started a massive campaign to uproot the APM's safe havens in southern Belmont. The ISE had sent in dozens of its elite force units to the city's lower income areas, where intelligence suggested the APM was in possession of safe houses and was involved with the local land mafia in extorting money from the lower income Belmontien nationals.

The raid, which began in the morning at five, as the sun was rising, involved 56 elite force members and captured 13 of the 20 APM members alive. Along with that, the ISE commandos discovered an operation being run by the APM to manufacture fake Belmontien passports to crisscross the border and fake Belmontien francs. The safe house which was attacked in the raid, also yielded plans of the APM to bomb certain targets in Paris and lay the blame on the Marquen intelligence agency, hoping to ignite war between the two Francophone countries.

The Interior Minister, Jean-François Chossy, said that the full revelation of the APM's plans was "horrific and unbelievable". He also said, "Seeing that the APM was planning on bombing several high profile areas in Paris with the intent of starting war between the two countries of Belmont and Marquette shows that the APM is a threat which must be rooted out from both sides of the border." The Belmontien Ambassador to Fond du Loc had issued a statement that he would be meeting the Marquen Foreign Minister to discuss the latest situation.
