"I am enormously gladdened to hear of this ceasefire move by the Kingdom of Belmont. An end to human suffering and slaughter in the region is something I believe Europeans everywhere will greet with relief. Naturally, Telora stands ready to assist the peace talks in any way she can."

The People's Republic of Vangala naturally welcomes the declaration of a ceasefire by Belmont but remains sceptical of Belmont's future intentions. We reiterate our belief that any peace process should recognise Belmont as the sole aggressor in this unnecessary conflict and demand reparations from Belmont for the loss of civilian life and damage to infrastructure in Coronado.

WOOLWICH, WEDNESDAY, 2ND FEBRUARY 2011
_____________________________________________

The Right Honourable The Secretary of State has received the Command of Her Engellexic Majesty The Queen to make known the following gracious Statement of Her Engellexic Majesty to the Princes, the Chiefs and the People of the Kingdom of Belmont.

Extension of The Queen's Statement in Council.

TO THE PRINCES AND CHIEFS OF THE KINGDOM OF BELMONT

The Kingdom of Belmont, in spite of all the obstacles which error and malevolence endeavour to throw in its way, proves to the world that it is in a position for respect and admiration through its dutiful approach to regional and international affairs, and it thus consoles the heart of Her Engellexic Majesty and the people of the Free Union, by confirming Her Engellexic Majesty in her favourite maxim that civilisation allows for peace, order, and prosperity.

An aggregate meeting of Her Engellexic Majesty’s Court with the Archbishop of Southwark, and, other members of the Catholic Church was held to-day to beseech the deity in his providence to guide the counsels of the two Governments and restore to both countries the priceless blessing of peace.

By the Grace of GOD, of the FREE UNION of ENGELLEX and BLOIS, CHARLOTTE, the QUEEN, through the Right Honourable the SECRETARY of STATE, ANTHONY PELHAM-HOLLES

It is good to hear that the peace talks are being viewed favorably by many in the Belmont, what is sad though is that similar views were not present prior to the bombs being dropped and the blood being spilled.

We applaud the Kingdom of Belmont for it's swift action against the ever aggressive revolutionary states, and are ever hopeful that the initial attack launched by the Royal Air Force was successful in achieving it's goals of eliminating the perceived threat to the sovereignty and stability of the Kingdom of Belmont. We are glad to see that some nations have expressed an intolerance for the meddling these revolutionary states perpetuate throughout the world, and encourage "revolutionary" states to renounce their conviction to pursue a global revolution.

The Federal Republic, though not a member of the Northern Council, is willing to provide troops for a peacekeeping mission along the Belmont-Coronado frontier and is willing to work with the Council and both of the parties to this peace deal to ensure that any such provision is made in line with any peace deal.

We agree with our allies in Metz that it is a pity that the current peaceful feelings in Belmont were absent at the moment that starting this senseless war was considered. Some moments of reason would have prevented many victims, and the severely damaged reputation Belmont currently has.

(ooc: I don't recall any country, even a democracy, allowing people to vote to go to war. Just pointing it out. Can't state this IC'ly in a fashion that's not hypocritical.)

NATIONAL OPINION SPLIT ON CORONADO SITUATION
North, South divide becomes exceedingly visible as south opposes peace talks

PARIS: The air raid against several targets in Coronado was deemed a strategic blunder by many military analysts, both, here and abroad and can only be considered a nominal tactical victory for the Royal Armed Forces. But as a ceasefire exists between the two countries, the two governments are meeting in Batavië to secure a peace that will end the five decades of hostilities which erupted into active aggression late last year. But as the government representatives talk in Hilversum, the public in Belmont is divided on the issue, with divisions forming along regional lines.

The southern realms of Visidame and Trégueir have seen the strongest opposition to the peace talks while the two northern realms of Couserans and Montaigne have generally been supportive of the peace talks. Fringe religious extremists have been fanning the flames using blogs and noted video sharing sites, though their support base doesn't seem to be growing.

TVOne airs documentary about Vangalan illegal immigration
Just as President Chatterjee's state visit to Coronado was beginning, TVOne, the nation's largest television channel, aired a documentary which has been critically acclaimed here in Belmont and has in the past been the cause of severe strain between Belmont and Vangala. The documentary which tells the individual stories of illegal immigrants from Vangala shows the harrowing tales of torture and abject poverty these people have suffered in their homeland and hidden camera footage from Vangala reveals the grand scale of corruption seen several smaller towns of the eastern country. The documentary starts with a woman who recounts the tale of how her family was killed before her eyes as she was raped by soldiers. That begins the two hour long tale of suffering.... Read more on Pg 13.

Peace conference continues in Hilversum
The peace initiative launched by the Northern Council continues at a sluggish pace in Hilversum and each day brings more rumors that Coronado and Belmont are closer to achieving a formal end of hostilities agreement...

We find it very insightful that Belmont decries legitimate actions by Carentania within its sovereign territory against those suspected of human rights abuses - yet loses no words about Sinhai's gross violation of international law and basic human rights.

Belmont Fishing Union rally brings downtown Marseilles to a standstill

A longstanding fishing dispute with Breotish fishing communities and the lack of the Government of either country resolving the tense situation has provoked the Belmont Fishing Union to demonstrate against the Municipal Government of Marseilles, an act which has brought the country's largest city and economic capital to a standstill and brought national exposure to this much ignored issue. As a result, the Central Government in Paris has announced, in an attempt to calm the protesters, that the issue will be taken up with the Breotish Ambassador.

Severe concerns in Visidame over Coronado border

The Realm of Visidame - a constituent realm of Belmont - has been registering its concerns for public safety within Belmont and advocating keeping the restricted border crossing with Coronado a continued government policy. The First Minister of Visidame stated in a press conference that he would seriously oppose any effort by the central government to open the border with the Socialist Republic for the threat it posed for the security and safety of the citizens of his realm.

Belmont is deliberately allowing viciously anti-Vangalan programmes to be broadcasted as part of a wider propaganda offensive against the People's Republic of Vangala. Belmont will continue to be an enemy of the Vangalan people until it stops pursuing its hypocritical and belligerent foreign policy.

The Government in Belmont does not regulate the programming of television stations unlike some countries in the world. We urge the Vangalan government to stop their efforts to derail the peace process between Belmont and Coronado.

Belmont is trying to deflect criticism of its imperialist foreign policy through desperate and groundless attacks against the People's Republic of Vangala. Vangala has been entirely supportive of the current peace process while also supporting Coronado in defending its independence and right to existence free from fear of invasion. Any claims to the contrary are false.

Due to the geographical change in position some events have not occurred in the Belmont RP that shall occur from this point forward, these events include:

  • Border disputes with the Gallian Francophone nations
  • War with Coronado
  • Breotish fishing disputes
But the internal dynamics of politics remain the same, as can be seen by reading the posts before and after this point. The reason this thread is being reused is to allow me easier reference to the actions and dynamics of the internal politics.

And seeing that the last post was made over a year ago, I hope that IC-ly it can be assumed that the past year has been relevantly quiet.

Thank you.

MARTINIQUE CABINET DISMISSED BY ROYAL PROCLAMATION
Elections called forth at the earliest; caretaker cabinet sworn into office

Shahrazad Martinique and her cabinet have been dismissed by the Queen, amidst a series of allegations being placed on a number of its members ranging from corruption, nepotism to the mismanagement of the 2011 Floods in the Province of Etréngeres, which caused ƒ2.9 billion worth of damage and killed 450 people. The Château de Charbonne released a statement to the national press that Her Majesty's decision had been taken after much consideration and was in the interest of the nation. The immediate effect of the announcement was the complete boycott of proceedings in the Parliament by the Libéraliste Party of Mme. Martinique and a sit in outside the Parliament building. The Queen has come under intense scrutiny by some segments of society for what is being called "an unfair dismissal" but general opinion seems to be in favour of the dismissal and the new elections.

The past four years of the Martinique government have seen the worst kind of political conflict between the two largest national parties, with immense funds directed into attacking each other through increasingly vitriolic advertisements and a very nasty clash of policies between Premier Martinique and the Leader of the Opposition, George Bettancourt, disagreements which would sometimes turn into personal attacks on each other. The political polarization which has been witnessed in the past four years has never before been witnessed in Belmontien history and has left many citizens with a sense of discomfort.

In several polls, the electorate was found to be equally distrustful of the two major political parties, for the alleged culture of nepotism and corruption they espoused and many were shown to prefer the smaller regional political parties. Analysts predict that the Election of 2012 shall see an end to a single party dominating national politics
