Referendum opens for votes later tonight

The National Senate quietly decided over the weekend to hold a national referendum on weather to scrap plans to fully establish a commonwealth and weather to form a mutual economic alliance with Batavia. Prime Minister Van Der Berg stated that the referendum is essential in order to ensure that everyone is satisfied with the direction Fulanistan is going. Opposition Leader Abdul De Keizer noted that the referendum was an important step for his party to force an election and end the current Liberal Administration. Citizens were sent forms asking either Yes or No for ending the plans for a Batavian Commonwealth early yesterday, and results are expected by tomorrow evening.

We are happy to see that our suggestion is being implemented. We are willing to send observers to monitor the referendum.

The Free State welcomes each time a government gives its people the opportunity to express themselves on matters of national importance through a free and fair referendum. We can only commend the government of Fulanistan for taking this step.

Yet, the rapid speed with which the referendum was organised is surprising. The Free State hopes that the people of Fulanistan had ample time to get informed on all aspects of the subject at vote, that of the voluntary commonwealth between Fulanistan and Batavia, and shall be able to express their opinion in an orderly, fair and free manner having full knowledge of the implications at hand. The Free State also hopes that all sides in the matter had ample time to campaign for their respective positions and had the access to necessary media means to let their arguments be heard by the Fulanistani people.

'No' victory in referendum

The National Senate has announced that it has received enough referendum votes to call the vote for the 'No' side. This victory means that Fulanistan will end discussions to completely go through with its plans to form a commonwealth with Batavia. Many people in the country feel the results of this referendum is a major embarrassment to the current Liberal Administration as the commonwealth was a main goal in order to establish a stronger economic relationship with Batavia. It is not currently known how the Liberals feel about the results, however Abdul De Keizer, National Opposition Leader, has stated that the results will help Fulanistan in the long run. He says he supports forming a non-governmental economic alliance with Batavia as long as it does not change or alter the Fulani government in any way.

We hope that the referendum results, apparently based upon the free will of the people, are respected.

Her Majesty's Secretary of State of the Free Union of Engellex and Blois

It is sincerely hoped that the will and determination of the people of Fulanistan is acknowledged and respected by the Liberal Administration. The Free Union is indifferent with regards to the establishment of a Commonwealth, however it would been understood as a serious error of judgement should the result of the national referendum not be respected.

We also look forward to the government publishing additional statistics regarding this referendum, the percentage of the population entitled to exercise their democratic right and what percentage actually did. We patiently await further details of the event.

The results of this referendum are currently being discussed in Fulanistan by President Van Randburg. They will naturally be respected and an alternative method of cooperation will be pursued instead.

Referendum accepted by Senate, Liberal-National Merger announced

The National Senate has decided to accept the Commonwealth Referendum that voted to end mutual commonwealth talks earlier this week following a prompt from interim leader Francisca Van Der Berg to unconditionally accept it. The referendum was accepted early this afternoon and it transferred power to an interim government composed of the previous Liberal Administration. This interim government will last until the next election which could come at any time, possibly as soon as next week. The Liberal Party merged with the National Alliance today forming a coalition known as the National Republic Coalition. Their main opponent is the People's Democratic Communist Party, which is seeking to form a Peoples Republic. The NRC's main goal is to win the next election and prevent the country from falling to the communists. Then they will reestablish the country as a Federal Republic of states made up of the current provinces. However, with waning support for the Liberals, it is unknown where the country will go.

Francisca Van Der Berg steps down as National Republic Coalition President

The NRC announced today that Francisca Van Der Berg has stepped down as leader. It is reported that she stepped down amid concerns that she did not have the support to bring the NRC through the next election. In her place, Hafez Al-Nahed will become President. Hafez is a member of the prestigious Al-Nahed family which has had much influence on the politics of Fulanistan. His father is former President Abdullah Al Asad-Nahed. Formerly he ran the family owned Azilal Real Estate company based in Johar.

Pictured: Abdul De Keizer earlier this week
Abdul De Keizer threatens civil war if election request is denied

Earlier today Abdul De Keizer approached the National Senate with a proposal to call a Federal Election in hopes that the PDC Party can defeat the NRC and become the ruling party. President Hafez Al-Nahed stated that the proposal was being seriously discussed, and the Senate is mediating whether an election is appropriate and how it will affect the country. Abdul De Keizer, President and Leader of the PDC Party, warned that if his proposal is turned down it would be an intrusion into the democratic process and will be met with civil war. The National People's Army is the military wing of the PDC party, and it is believed they are equipped with and funded by outside sources. One report claims Vangala has been secretly supporting them, however this report was not sponsored or supported by the National Senate.

This news is extremely troubling. Civil war will not bring democracy, but chaos, death and a ruined economy for years to come. Use the democratic institutions, do not threaten civil war and the loss of peace. If help is needed to organise elections, we urge the government to go to countries with strong democratic foundations and a neutral bearing on Fulanistani affairs.

Lastly, we hope that the government investigates claims of funding for a militant wing of a political party. Democracy cannot properly flourish and be fomented when political parties have men with guns to take orders. Then they are not parties, but militias with an agenda.

Her Majesty's Secretary of State of the Free Union of Engellex and Blois

We are greatly concerned with the statement from the President and Leader of the PDC Party, Abdul De Keizer, and implore that democratic practices and institutions be acknowledged and respected. There will be no gain from pursuing the deplorable course of civil war. What one hopes to achieve through gaining power will surely find themselves powerless to achieve anything if there exists no stability but a war zone within Fulanistan. The threat of such action should, itself, be a crime.

The Free Union is also alarmed at the suggestion that Vangala has been secretly providing funding to the National People’s Army. We hope a vigorous investigation by the government can ascertain the truth of such accusations.

The Sultanate calls on restraint by both the PDC as well as the Fulani government. Democratic representation of the Arab people is necessary. We do, however, think that violence is only justified in self-defense.

The recent rumours of alleged Vangalan support for paramilitary activity in Fulanistan are unfounded and untrue. We support open and peaceful dialogue between the National Republic Coalition and the People's Democratic Communist Party.

It is HM Government's hope that a peaceful outcome will be found for the the situation, but may we remind those who it may concern, that even a monarchy recognizes that the democratic process ended as soon as the threat of civil war was made if the desired decision was not made. Democracy at the point of a gun is not democracy.

The Commonwealth expresses its concern over the development of Fulanistan's internal affairs, noting that even a threat for the use of violence to advance aims in a political process stands an indicator of severity in the situation at hand.

In addition, the Commonwealth Cabinet calls for investigation into the claims of Vangalan support for paramilitary Fulanistani elements.

Alleged Vangalan support seems to be the strawman argument against any progressive movement in Europe. There is no socialist organization the political right has not attempted to discredit through rumours they'd receive weapons from Vangala.
If only half of these accusations were true, Vangalas budget for just those supplies would exceed that of most European states as a whole.

Pictured: Yasir Shahadi at a national economic convention earlier this month
PDC Party splits after De Keizer threatens civil war

Fulani Citizens are outraged by Abdul De Keizer's threat to cause civil war if his election request is turned down, so much so that it has caused a significant amount PDC Party members to split off from the party and form their own. The newly formed Social Democratic Union is a center-left party led by former PDC Party chairman Yasir Shahadi. Erik noted today that his party is disturbed by De Keizer's comments and that his party is devoted to democracy and peace. President Hafez Al-Nahed commented earlier today that the recent political divide was surprising and he hopes that the SDU will become a face for the future of democracy in Fulanistan and that the PDC will cease to be a threat to the democratic process.
