Mehldorfean Prime Ministers Office

I congratulate Mr. Krevetas and his cabinet on there victory and applaud the fact that these elections have been held with no major irregularities. Mehldorf is glad it had a position in bringing the power back to the Pelasgian people. We have to admit none of this would have been capable without the work of the new Emperor and his belief in democracy. We wish Pelasgia and her people the best in the years to come.

Signed,
Anders W. Schneider
Prime Minister of Mehldorf

FINANCIAL REFORMS PACKAGE APPROVED

Gov't victory - Immigration reformation next on the menu?
by Aristotelis Papanikolaou, Economic specialist

The recently sworn-in coalition government of the Liberal Union and Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia have scored their first parliamentary victory, following the approval of their Financial Reforms Package from both the Senate and the National Assembly in the Koinoboulion. Apart from their own MPs, the two parties also saw the Merchantile Union support their proposal, while the opposition of the Internationalist Communist Party, Nationalist Party and the National Rally were not enough to block the great majority of the three largest parties. The FRP has been received rather well from Unions, who were pleased by its steps to increase and safeguard workers' rights as well as the Association of Industries and Entreprises, who commended the government's efforts to strengthen the economy, while not neglecting to reiterate their call for migration restrictions to be loosened.

The Thematic Boulae of most Themes also supported the legislation, which they saw as a major step towards moving away from the Nationalists' Propontidocentrism and developping the provinces. While the new and largely popular financial measures, in coordination with recently struck trade deals, which the new Parliamentary Monarchy has vowed to honour, have boosted the economy, most people's minds are on what legislation the government will try to push forth next. Some expect immigration reform to follow, as the coalition government has made clear they seek to loosen the Nationalists' extremely strict migration limits, though not as much as the Merchantile Union wants. Others expect immigration reform to take place late, when the coalition will have solidifed more. [continued on page 2]

PHILOLOGIST PUBLISHES MAJOR DEMOTIC LANGUAGE STUDY

Linguistic debate sparked once more - the story of lingustic division through the ages
by Athena Plakaia, Cultural specialist

The Great Linguistic Debate, commonly known as the Pelasgian Language Debate, is nearly as old as the Pelasgian language itself. As far back as historical records go, there has always been a difference between the everyday language of the common Pelasgians and the various proper Classical Dialects of Pelasgian spoken by the Aristocracy, the most prominent of which is Atthic. References to Plato's 'excellent and proper Atthic speech' go as far back as the IV century BC. However, linguistic differences between the various dialects as well as common and proper linguistic varieties were not grave enough for a full on debate to be sparked, especially in a climate where each city and state was especially proud of its own dialect. The real linguistic division started with the introduction of Pelasgistic Koine, following the conquests of Anaxander the Great, which spread Pelasgian rule and civilisation across the Long Sea, making Pelasgian the de facto and de jure common language of the known world.

Colonists and homeland-Pelasgians, Pelasgian and non-Pelasgian speakers of the language, quickly developped different linguistic forms, with the gap growing both in pronunciation, vocabulary choice and grammar. Traditionalists rallied behind Classical Atthic as the 'true and pure' Pelasgian language,
while Koine mainly evolved from Atthic and Opsician everyday dialects, through trade in major ports. One historian of the time described Koine as the 'Pelasgian language spoken in the ports of Atthis.' The gap between the two language became unbridgeable in the first milennium AD, when aspirated plosives were simplified into fricatives, vowel length was lost and the pitch accent was entirely abandoned. A phenomenon known as iotacism, which had existed since the classical era, when certain dialects such as those of Codris and Cydrelis simplified diphthongs into /i/, started taking hold with several vowels and diphthongs being simplified to /i/, the last of which were υ and οι, previously pronounced /y/, around 1030 AD. Other simpifications included αι to /e/, vowel+υ to vowel+/v/ or /f/ and so on.

The debate took official proportions when the VI century AD, when Pelasgian became the official language of the Propontine Empire, replacing Latin. While originally pressured to accept Classical Atthic, the fact that the New Testament had been written in Koine and the fact that most people spoke Koine motivated the Empire to ultimately choose Koine instead of Classical as its language. Academies across the Empire continued teaching Classical, to help students understand Classical texts more easily, but the common public, through the otherwise Classical Paideia of the Empire's public education system was now educated in Koine. Even within Koine, however, several divisions existed as far back as 400 AD. As inscriptions in Phryxaea can attest to, more vernacular and more classicist varieties of Koine co-existed, with the Empire choosing the most classicist of forms. The demotic form for Sovereign «Βασιλιᾶς,» which many erroneously consider to be rather recent, has been found in inscriptions and texts dating back to the 5th century AD. Copies of the Empire's famous medieval national epic, Digenes Akritas, also provide insight into the rather rapid evolution of the language in the period around the Fourth Crusade, with a form of language that has little difference to modern urban Demotic being dated to the XIII century AD.

However, as the Empire's populations has always taken pride in being Pelasgian and not barbaric, bearing the heritage of what Pelasgians consider to be a vastly superior civilisation to all others, language, the most immediate link between Ancient and Modern Pelasgian Identity, has always been a very sensitive, controversial and emotional topic. Classicist Scholars of the Renaissance, Koine-preffering members of the Eccelsiarchy and Demotic-supporting modernists have continued a debate that seems as linekd and unique to the Pelasgian language as its alphabet. Modern democtic Pelasgian, in the 'standard' form spoken in Propontis, has very few and rather insignificant differences with Ancient Pelasgian; unlike the Romantic languages descended from Latin which are almost foreign (for example, Pelasgian still maintains declension in all its forms, unlike French etc.), the Pelasgian language is one and continuous, not in the least bit due to the Empire's relatively uninterrupted education system and the individual pride of the Pelasgian people in their language and all that comes with it. The Church's use of Koine in its liturgy and the use of Classical texts and hymns by Pelasgians still following the Ancient Pantheon in their rituals also played a major part in this respect.

The adoption of gerund, slight grammatic simplfication, the abandonment of dual number and optative and the simplification of the pronunciation, are the only real differences between modern Demotic and its Classical ancestor from Atthis. Coupled with Classical education in all Pelasgian schools, the concerns of most Classicists seem to be satisfied. The debate has been ignited once more by prominent Pelasgian lexicographer and philologist Dr. Eustathios Krios, who recently published his 'Dicionary of the Medieval Demotic Pelasgian Literature.' Dr. Krios has received many awards both at home and abroad due to his work in documenting the evolution and state of the Pelasgian language, though that has often brought him at odds with reactionary circles, such as those of the Nationalists and the Orthodox Church. With a new democratic state, which has already accepted a simplification from Koine to Katharevousa, due to pressure from people such as Dr. Krios, and a government that has repeatedly expressed pro-demotic sentiment, is this finally the time to end the Great Linguistic Debate? PARLIAMENT APPROVES CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION

Demotic now replaces Katharevousa as official form of language
by Ioanna Droungaraina, Cultural specialist

The Common Parliament of the Empire has approved a proposed Constitutional Reform by the new coalition government, which replaces the archaic Katharevousa form of Pelasgian with Demotic, based on the grammar published by Emmanouēl Triantaphyllidēs in 1941, at an Imperial Commission. The Empire will not accept the adoption and use of foreign loanwords, however, the grammar and syntax of the language will be according to the Demotic provisions set forth by Dr. Triantaphyllidēs and a recently formed commission, headed by prominent philologist and lexicographer Dr. Krios. The reform received wide support in both the National Assembly and the Senate, gaining the required 3/4 majority for a Constitutional Revision. The MPs of the Liberal Union, the Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia, the Merchantile Union and the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia supported the proposal, with 100 of the 120 Senators in its favour and 369 0f the 445 Members of the National Assembly approving it. The National Rally and the Nationalist Party have both staunchly opposed the proposal, with the latter dubbing it a 'step towards the elimination of Pelasgian civilisation and an unprecedented case of wilful cultural degeneration.' The DKKP, which did approve of the Revision, said that it was a 'step in the right direction,' but needed to be accompanied by a reform of the Pelasgian language's complicated system of accents and diacritics.

The coalition gov't have made it clear that they will not be simplifying the system or reducing the number of accents and diacritics anytime in the future, as they consider the accent system a 'part of Pelasgian linguistic culture and tradition and an invaluable tool in learning and properly using the Pelasgian language.' The Commission of Linguistic Affairs of the Imperial Academy has also rejected an accent reform, even though it had drafted a provisional plan for simplified accents in case it was needed. With many civilians joyfully re-writing their stores' signs in demotic and newspapers, ours among them, proudly printing their first issues in demotic, the public has been very supportive of this most recent Constitutional Revision. According to a poll conducted by Hermēs Research for our the Propontios Logothetēs, 72% of Pelasgians approve of the reform, while ean even greater 89% reject a reform of the accent and diacritic system. School materials for the 1956-1957 school year will be printed in Demotic, while the Demotic dictionaries published by Dr. Krios and the Commission for Linguistic Affairs will be used as standard, to replace the Katharevousa dictionaries from the same sources.

To boost the acceptance of the Demotic in the upper classes and high culture circles, the Ministry of Culture has dedicated this August's Cultural Festival to cinema, literature, poetry and music in the Demotic Pelasgian language and its various varities, including the works of famous Pelasgian poets, authors, directors and musicians who chose to write their work in the people's everyday tongue. The recent discovery of a series of opere in Archipelagot Demotic by renowned Pelasgian 19th century opera writer Spyridon Samaras has boosted public interest in the event. In academia, the use of standardised Propontine Demotic in all schools and universities has been welcomed, especially by professors in the STEM fields. His Imperial Majesty has also hailed the Constitutional Revision, addressing a speech in Demotic to the Pelasgians, wherein the Emperor proudly refered to Himself as «Βασιλιᾶς τῶν Πελασγῶν.» [continued on page 2]

The secondary schools in Southern Eiffelland, Rügen and Helgoland already taught Demotic as part of the curriculum, while at the Gymnasia the differences between Demotic and Katharevousa were pointed out as well. It is good to see that we anticipated into the right direction.

EMPRESS TRANSFERRED TO ST. GEORGE'S MILITARY HOSPITAL

Crowds gather in anticipation, as the nation seems ready to receive a new Basilopais
by Tivyrios Vasilikos, Crown correspondent

Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Maria-Eirēnē Palaiologina-Rhaoulina, has been transferred to St. George's Military Hospital, in Propontis' Phanarion district, as her pregnancy has reached its final months. A considerable crowd, made up of both native Pelasgians and foreign tourists, has gathered outside the Hospital, in anticipation of the Empress' childbirth. His Imperial Majesty has also gone to the Hospital, to stand by the Empress during childbirth. Several news outlets, popular magazines and even the populace themselves are debating whether the child will be a boy or a girl and what name the Imperial Couple will choose for the new Basilopais. Tourist arrivals in the recent weeks have significantly increased, probably due to anticipation of the event, as the fact that Her Imperial Majesty's pregnancy was reaching its end had been known.

Most parties in the Koinoboulion have wished the best to the Imperial Couple, save for the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia's representative who, while wishing a safe and sound childbirth to the Empress, denounced the 'public obsession with an event which only serves to highlight the servitude and enthrallment of the Pelasgian people.' Public support for the Imperial Family seems at an altime high, with 86% of the public viewing its existence as a positive factor in the Pelasgian political scene, 7% viewing it in a negative light and another 7% viewing it as neither negative nor positive. Currently, the most popular name for a male Basilapais seems to Anaxander, followed by Basilius, Eumenēs and Antiochus, while Athēna, Hypatia, Aikaterinē and Pelasgias seem to be the most popular names for a female Basilopais. EMPRESS GIVES BIRTH TO BABY BOY

Celebrations across nation for the new heir
by Tivyrios Vasilikos, Crown correspondent

For three days now, a large crowd of Pelasgians and foreigners has gathered outside St. George's Military Hospital in Propontis' Phanarion district, awaiting the birth of an heir to the Imperial family. Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Maria-Eirēnē Palaiologina-Rhaoulina, has given birth to a baby boy, who is in good health. The Imperial family emerged from Her Imperial Majesty's room, greeting the crowd, to announce that the name of the child is to be Eumenes Laskaris-Palaiologos. Imperial vexilologists have already made a personnal standard for the newborn son, consisting of quartered flag, with the first and third quarter bearing the Palaiologan Tetragrammic Cross and the second and fourth bearing the Laskarid Imperial Eagle. The standard was raised above the hospital to celebrate the newborn Basilopais.

Across the country, citizens of the Empire celebrated the birth of the child by offering traditional sweets and tea to passers-by, while the navy's largest battleship delivered a 21-gun salute to the newborn Basilopais in the port of Propontis. In Nymphaeum, the seat of the Laskarid Dynasty, celebrations followed the ceremonial engraving of the newborn Basilopais' name and arms on the Great Scroll of the Laskaridai. The Empress is expected to retain her position as Despoina and Co-Empress Regent until Their Imperial Majesties' son comes of age. The boy will be baptised after 40 days, in accordance with Imperial tradition. The choice of an Ancient Pelasgian name, of a Pelasgistic ruler from Opsicia, the home region of the Laskarid Dyansty, is seen by any as a further step towards the Empire's embracing of Classical Pelasgian heritage instead of Orthodox Christian tradition. In addition to being baptised, the Emperor's son will inherit the title of Helios from His Imperial Majesty, upon the latter's death, uniting the Pelasgian Pantheon and the Orthodox Church in the face of the Emperor, in accordance with one of the core principles of the Imperial Institution. COMMON PARLIAMENT APPROVES CITIZENSHIP LAW

Law on the Acquisition & Loss of Citizenship passed by both houses
by Ioanna Droungaraina, Political correspondent

Having been on the agenda of the Coalition Government since election day, citizenship & immigration reform have finally been approved by the Koinoboulion. According to the new Law on the Acquisition & Loss of Citizenship of 17 July 1956, a child whose natural parents are married, one of them being a Pelasgian citizen, is automatically granted Pelasgian citizenship and nationality from birth, as well as the child of a female Pelasgian citizen, who is not married to the child's father. The child of a male Pelasgian citizen who is not married to the child's mother is also granted Pelasgian citizenship upon filiation by the child's father. If the filiation is cancelled, the child loses Pelasgian citizenship, provided they do not become stateless. Furthemore, any children found within Pelasgia, without their parents, due to abandonment by their parents, are granted Pelasgian citizenship. The citizenship is rescended if the child's parents are found, they are still a minor and they will not become stateless. Additionally, any child adopted by a Pelasgian citizen automatically becomes a Pelasgian national.

If a minor Pelasgian citizen is adopted by foreign nationals, he or she loses Pelasgian citizenship on adoption if he or she acquires the nationality of the adoptive parent thereby or already holds that nationality. However,
Pelasgian citizenship is not lost if filiation with a Pelasgian parent is established on adoption or such filiation remains following adoption. If adoption is annulled, loss of Pelasgian citizenship is deemed not to have taken place. A child born abroad to a Pelasgian parent who is a citizen of another country loses Pelasgian citizenship on reaching the age of 22, unless his or her birth has been notified to a Pelasgian authority abroad or in Pelasgia or he or she has declared in writing that he or she wishes to remain a Pelasgian citizen. If a child loses Pelasgian citizenship by virtue of paragraph 1, then his or her children also lose Pelasgian citizenship. Notification is constituted in particular by any report by parents, relatives or acquaintances with a view to the child's registration in registers in Pelasgia, matriculation or the issue of identity documents. Any person who, against his or her will, has been unable to provide notification or a declaration in terms of paragraph 1 in time, may still do so validly within one year of the reason for their failure to do so ceasing to apply.

Concerning the much debated naturalisation, the ordinary naturalisation procedure enables persons to acquire Pelasgian citizenship by naturalisation in any Pelasgian Theme (Province). Naturalisation is only valid if a naturalisation licence has been issued by the competent Imperial office (the Imperial Office of Naturalisation). The licence is issued for a specific Province and may be amended to include family members, but the Imperial Office of Naturalisation may revoke the license if any information comes to its knowledge that would have caused it to not issue the license. Before the licence is granted, the applicant's suitability for naturalisation must be verified, and in particular whether he or she: has legally entered and legally resides in Pelasgia, is integrated into Pelasgian society, is familiar with Pelasgian habits, customs and practices, abides by Pelasgian law and does not pose a risk to Pelasgian internal or external security. Foreign nationals may only apply for a licence if they have lived in Pelasgia for a total of twelve years, including three of the five years prior to the application being made (when calculating the period of twelve years, the period that the applicant has lived in Pelasgia between the ages of 10 and 20 counts as double). If spouses make a joint application for a licence and one of them fulfils requirements of paragraphs 1 or 2, it is sufficient for the other to have lived for a total of five years in Pelasgia, including one year immediately prior to the application being made, provided he or she has lived in matrimony with the other spouse for three years. The periods also apply to an applicant whose spouse has already been naturalised on his or her own. It is sufficient that the registered partner of a Pelasgian citizen has lived for a total of five years in Pelasgia, including one year immediately prior to the application being made, provide he or she has been the registered partner of the Pelasgian citizen for three years. Valid reasons must be given for rejecting an application for naturalisation.

Honorary citizenship may be granted by the Emperor or the Koinoboulion, for extraordinary services to the Empire. One or more Thematic Voulae may also propose that honorary citizenship be granted to an individual, with the proposition having to be approved by the Emperor or the Koinoboulion. Dual citizen is also allowed, with no specific constraints. Reinstatement of citizenship is allowed but it requires that the applicant:
has ties to Pelasgia, abides by Pelasgian law and does not pose a risk to Pelasgia's internal or external security. Any person who with reasonable excuse fails to provide notification or a declaration as required by Article 10 and thus loses Pelasgian citizenship may apply within ten years for citizenship to be reinstated. If the applicant has close ties with Pelasgia, he or she may apply for reinstatement of citizenship even after expiry of the ten-year period. Any person who has been relieved of Pelasgiam citizenship may apply for reinstatement of citizenship if he or she has lived in Pelasgia for one year. Any person who has been relieved of Pelasgian citizenship in order to acquire or retain another nationality may apply for reinstatement of citizenship even if he or she is resident abroad provided he or she has close ties with Pelasgia. While it is the Imperial Office that decides on reinstatement of citizenship, it consults with Thematic and Municipal authorities of the former citizen's place of residence within Pelasgia beforehand.

Pelasgian citizenship might be lost if a naturalised citizen is found to have falsified information or otherwise acted dishonestly pertaining to naturalisation during their naturalisation period, or if they commit a crime of treason, terrorism or other major felony such as fighting for another country against Pelasgia, failing to take up arms in defence of Pelasgia when called upon etc. All naturalised male citizens below 35 years of age must complete their military service, while those older than that must pay a fine to compensate for not serving it. Native Pelasgian citizens can never be stripped of their nationality, regardless of their actions, in accordance with the Pelasgian constitution. The new Law also touches upon the subject of refugees; much to the dismay of left wing parties, the new law rejects the notion of economic refugees, instead only recognising refugees from war and persecution. All applications for asylum must be judged by a legitimate Imperial authority while it is prohibited to deport anybody applying for refugee status. A person may also apply for refugee status in a Pelasgian embassy abroad. Persons applying for refugee status must have legally entered the country, unless the Imperial authority judging their application deems them have had no other choice, for reasons of personnal security. Persons coming from a safe country are not allowed to claim refugee status, when they could have claimed it there, unless their application was unjustly rejected. All refugees and asylum applicants are granted protection and rights under Pelasgian law, until such a time that they are to be deported or their application is approved. After the conflict or situation which forced them to flee their home country is resolved, they must return there and lose their refugee status. Refugees are oblidged to integrate into local society and may not apply for naturalisation, unless they have lived in the country for twelve years and fulfill all other naturalisation criteria.

The reform has been seen very positively by the government's parties, as well as the Merchantile Union, though the far right criticised it for being too liberal and the far left criticised it for being too conservative. Others are concerned about the possible effects of the Law on Pelasgia's national cohesion and unity. [continued on page 2]

DEFENDING THE FATHERLAND

The future of the Imperial Armed Forces
by Miltiades Taktikos, Defence analyst

"There is one good omen, to defend one's Fatherland," Hector said in the Illiad; the phrase's second half has since been adopted as the motto of the Imperial Ministry of National Defence. With the 1950s nearing their end, the Imperial Armed Forces (Vasilikes Enoples Dynameis - VED) have long been developping plans and systems for the future of the nation's defence. Yesterday, the Ministry of National Defence published a report datailing several important reforms which are set to have been completed by the end of the decade. More specifically, the Imperial Land Army (Vasilikos Stratos Xēras - VSX) is beginning to replace all weapons using 7.5×54mm Pelasgian rounds and other non-standard local rounds, with the 7.62×51mm international standard round versions, where applicable. The HĒTT 49/56 semi-automatic rifle is also set to be replaced by the more modern II TVIE assault rifle, a revolutionary project of the Imperial Research Foundation (Vasiliko Idryma Ereunōn - VIE), as the service rifle for the Imperial Armed Forces, though the HĒTT 49/56 telescopic scope version will continue to be used as a sniper rifle and a designated marksman rifle. The VSX has also commissioned a new series of helmets, camouglage uniforms and equipment for infantrymen, seeking to do away with late 40s gear.

The Imperial War Navy (Vasiliko Polemiko Nautiko - VPN), the largest in the Long Sea and the most prestigious of the Imperial Military's service branches, has sought to decomission almost all of its battleships, due to them becoming obsolete by modern naval-aerial warfare, maintaing only a handful for heavy coastal bombardment and fire support. To fill this gap in capital ships, the VPN has invested heavily in Aircraft Carriers, developping the much-talked-about Poseidōn Class, whose first ship, the VPN Poseidōn, is set to be launched within the next year. The Poseidōn Class is rumored to be the largest class of aircraft carrier, and ship in general, to have been constructed and fielded to this day, guaranteeing the VPN dominance over the Long Sea.

This does, however, raise the question of carrier-bourne aircraft, as the current Pēgasos Xiphias jet bomber and Pēgasos Glaros I & II jet fighters, while currently barely up to date, will be considered obsolete by the end of the decade, due to rapid developments in the aviation industry. To this end, the Empire has enlisted the help of its allies, who have much more advanced aviation sectors, for new aircraft both for the VPN and the Imperial Military Aviation (Vasilikē Polemikē Aeroporia - VPA). The VPN has commissioned new classes of ships in all categories, to replace the myriad of old ship classes with only a handful, selling the surplus of ships to neighbouring countries and allies with less advanced navies. Particularly revolutionary are the new submarines of the VPN, the super-modern Oceanus Class, which has attracted great interest from both demostic and foreign buyers, despite its great price. Revolutionary guided missile cruisers, replacing the old gun cruisers, have also attracted great interest.

The Imperial Military Aviation (Vasilikē Polemikē Aeroporia - VPA) has also sought to completely rehaul its ranks by the end of the decade. Having done away with propeller planes in all roles except minor communciation and personnel transport, the VPA's new jet fighters have managed to keep it up to date, but will be lagging behind other planes by the end of the decade. New designs for Pelasgian fighter jets have begun to be developped, while the VPA can also look abroad, to the aviation industries of the Empire's allies, for new aircraft, much like the VPN. Unlike the VPN, however, the VPA aims to focus mainly on the products of domestic aviation industries, for both reasons of security, the prohibitive cost of large-scale foreign supplies and possible needs of wartime production. CHURCH OF HELLASTORIUS GRANTED AUTOCEPHALY

Ecumenical and Hellastorian Patriarchs sign treaty setting major precedent
by Christodoulos Theophanides, Religious correspondent

For years, the growing gap between the Church of Hellastorius and the greater Orthodox world was far from a secret. Distance, politics and mistakes on both sides had driven the two further and further. While the lack in dogmatic differences prevented a schism, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Patriarchate of Athenaiom's discourse starkly resembled the Patriarchal-Papal debates before the Great Schism. Let us not fool ourselves; back then, just like right now, religion was but an excuse, temporal power was the real struggle. Thakfully, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Propontis was wise enough to see ahead and push for a resolution before the Orthodox world ate itself apart, like the Catholics had done during their Wars of Religion with the Protestant reformists.

Having invited the Patriarch of Hellas and all Keiv to the Imperial Capital, Propontis, the His Most Divine All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory VII, met with His Holiness, Patriarch Kiril, to discuss a possible settlement and compromise between the two sides. After discussing for a while, the two delegations signed an agreement and exhanged gifts, before parting. Yet, nobody who has seriously ever looked into the Ecumenical Patriarchate would be naive enough to think that such a settlement came about spontaniously; Patriarchal officials and agents had raised quite a fuss, with multiple rumours, from sources of varying trustworthyness, with their activities to collect information about certain Autonomist and Autocephalist movements and their activities. The Patriarchate is rumoured, though never officially proven, to possess one of the largest information networks on the planet and their reach is far greater than many would expect.

The deal itself is rather impressive: All Autocephalous churches will still recognise the supremacy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Orthodox Affairs and will still convene in Grand Senods when called to do so by the Patriarchate, remaining in direct communion with the greater Orthodox world. These Synods will be the only institutions capable of any dogmatic changes or clarifications concerning the entire faith and all Autocephalous Churches must abide by them. All Autocephalous churches will still give a tenth of their income to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, to compensate for the increased costs in communication and organisation. They shall also have to recognise the authority of the Pelasgian Emperor as God's Sole Chosen Representative on Earth, as He is the one who appoints the Patriarch. To become Autocephalous, a branch of the Church must have authority over ten million or more followers and there must not be another Autonomous or Autocephalous Church covering its followers. Smaller branches of the Church can become Autonomous, provided they have more than five million followers. Any branch whose authority's borders meet with those of the Archdiocese of Propontis or cover areas within the Pelasgian Empire cannot become Autocephalous.

Granting various churches Autocephaly and Autonomy might seem like a bold step forward, but the fact that they still have to recognise the supremacy of the Ecumenical Patriarch and, by extent, that of the Pelasgian Emperor, grants enormous influence to the Patriarchate and the Pelasgian Throne which, let's face it, have always went hand in hand. Coupled with directly collecting 10% of the Autocephalous Churches' incomes and Lord knows how much more indirectly, along with considerable population prerequisites for Autocephaly and Autonomy and geographic restrictions, the Church has strategically made Autocephaly possible but not particularly enticing, at least for smaller branches of the Church. The Patriarchate seems to have followed Sun Tzu's advice: "If you leave the enemy with no way of escaping, they will fight decisively, to the death; if you leave them a small opening to escape through, they will run and be destroyed easily." By givint the branches of the Church who want Autocephaly or Autonomy a way to it, it has permanently negated the chances of any internal schism. But, by making that way full of restrictions and barriers, it has made it far less desirable. And by having the first Autocephalous Church in Orthodox Christiendom agree to this compromise, it has set an enormous, unchallengable precedent, solidifying Propontine control over all of Orthodoxy. CLASHES BETWEEN JEWS AND MUSLIMS IN HIEROSOLYMA

Two dead and dozens wounded as religious zealots clash over Temple Mount
by Stergios Tivyraios, Philistaea correspondent

The animosity between Jews and Muslims in Hieorosolyma is nothing new, but tensions have recently reached an all-time high, due to disputes concerning claimed rights over the Temple Mount of Hierosolyma, one of the holiest places in all three Abrahamic faiths. Recent attempts by Muslims to gain the right to pray on the Temple Mount have been met with failure, following a rejection in both the local Thematic Voulē, the Koinovoulio and the Council of the State. Leaders of the more radical Islamic groups, both inside and outside the Empire, attributed this to Jewish influnce within the Empire's legal system, though as many legal experts have pointed out, the Temple Mount falls under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Orthodox Christian Church. Muslims are prohibited from praying in all public spaces except designated areas of worshipp of their religion and any attempts by either them, or any other party for that matter, to claim equal status with the Orthodox Church over the Temple Mount is bound to be met by failure, due to a combination of the Church's influence, the presence of one of the oldest and biggest Christian Churches in the world on the Mount and several Imperial Chrysoboula from past centuries with grant control over the Temple Mount to the Church.

Despite the calls for calamity and order by some of the Empire's most prominent Jewish and Islamic personalities, including renowned Constitutional Law specialist and Islamic reformist Dr. Haidar Samara and famed National Assembly member and political activist David Ioudaios, clashes broke out in Jerusalem's old market. Suffering several injured officers, including Archiphylakas Maria Kataphraktina, the Police Sergeant in charge of the area, the Vasilikē Astynomia were able to safely evacuate the merchants, buyers, passers-by and tourists in the Old Market before the two mobs of radical Sunni Muslims and Orthodox Jews started brawling, leaving two dead and dozens wounded in their wake. It should be noted, that while some small fights have occured between the two groups in the past, fights of the sort have never been witnessed in the entire Empire, especially between these two groups, for centuries. Imperial officials were caught of guard, needing to request the intervention of numerous M.A.T. (Riot Police) units before order could be restored.

Imperial Police have deployed E.K.A.M. (Special Anti-Terrorist Unit) officers in the city, as well as large numbers of Police officers armed with surplus military equipment and riot gear until tthings have calmed down between the two splinter factions. The majority of Muslims and Jews in the Empire are abhorred at the events which transpired in the Holy City, with Mardochaios Romaniotēs, the Chairman of the Jewish Council of the Pelasgian Empire, and the Mahmoud al-Jalal, the President of the Pelasgian Islamic Association jointly condemning the clashes. Left wing parties have called for increased efforts towards building trust among and with the various communities of the Holy City, while right wing parties have demanded better integration of such minorities. Others have called this a backlash of reactionary religion, as more and more Arabic and Jewish citizens of the Empire choose to abandon their faiths in favour of secularism and mainstream Pelasgian and European culture. The leaders of both radical factions have been known to starkly oppose mixed marriages and integration policies and have been detained, along with a number of other rioters. [continued on page 2]

CELEBRATIONS FOR 15 AUGUST ACROSS EMPIRE

Christians and Ethnics alike celebrate one of their holiest days
by Ioanna Droungaraina, Cultural specialist

The Assumption of Mary is one of the holiest days in Christiendom and, for most Orthodox Pelasgians, the most highly anticipated day of summer. Celebrations are traditionally centered around major Christian Holy Cities, such as Edessa, Propontis and Hierosolyma, as well as the island of Syra, where thousands of pilgrims attend annual celebrations centered around the famous Church of Our Lady of Syra, in which the Imperial Navy participates, with a detachment of sailors and marines carrying the Holy Icon of the Church's Patron. Like every year, the Megas Doux was present on Syra, while the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Emperor attended the celebratory service in the Imperial Cathedral of Hagia Pronoiam, with both services attracting great numbers of Pelasgians and foreigners alike. Since the Assumption of Mary coincides with an Ancient Tiburan feast in the Emperor's honour, which servives to this day, the celebrations were also in the honour of the Emperor. The Patriarchate of Edessa also hosted its own celebrations which notably gained the attendance of many Bishops from Eastern Himyar. The Church of Hierosolyma had the most peculiar of services this year, as while attendance followed the trend of past years in growing, it was conducted under heavy security.

Last night, mobs of radical Islamists and Orthodox Jews breached curfew and attacked three roadblocks manned by ephedroi (reservists) of the Imperial Land Army, leading the latter to open fire, killing twenty-four people as well as injuring over a hundred. As flares lit up the sky of the Holy City, with the Temple Mount being used as the staging area for the mortar squads which deployed the flares, it was descovered that a thirteen year old boy, of an Islamic background, who had been brought to the riot by his father, a contract worker from Eastern Himyar, was among the dead. Imperial Police have launched an inquiery into the boy's death and may charge the parents for their criminal negligence regarding their son as well as instigation of his breach of curfew, which could result in their deportation. The Holy City's Muslim community attempted to protest this by storming the Temple Mount, but they were stopped by strong Police forces a few blocks away of the Temple Mount's entrance. Tensions have been rising in the Philistine Capital since the bloody riots that gripped the city's Old Market less than two weeks ago, with heavy security forces being deployed at the request of the local Thematic Government.

In Melingia, Pierreia and Aethyia, the Themes with the largest Pelasgian Polytheist populations, celeberations in honour of Athena, the Pelasgian Goddess of Wisdom. Centered around Anthene and the rest of Atthis, the celebrations coincide and mostly peacefully coexist with Christian festivities. [continued on page 2]

PARENTS OF DEAD MUSLIM BOY TO BE DEPORTED

Found guilty of criminal negligence - To take son's remains with them
by Maria Propontia, Legal correspondent

On the night of August 14, as most of the nation prepared for the Holiday of August 15, several mobs of radical Islamists and Orthodox Jews in Hierosolyma, the capital of the Theme of Philistaea, breached a city-wide curfew, which had been imposed following bloody riots between the two groups, and attacked three roadblocks, manned by the Vasilikē Astynomia, the Empire's Law Enforcement, as well as ephedreies (reservist formations) of the Imperial Land Army. According to official reports, Police were able to disperse the crowd in one roadblock using teargas and warning shots, but in the other two roadblocks, the men manning them were unable to do so. Following the deployment of flares from mortar squads of the Temple Mount, moderate force was used to break up the violent rioters, resulting in over twenty deaths, many from the rioters stumpeding their own, as well as hundreds of wounded. Among the dead was a thirteen-year old boy who had joined the riot at the incitation of his father.

The boy's parents, unskilled contract workers from Eastern Himyar, were found guilty of criminal negligence by the Theme's Epheteio (Court of Appeal) and were sentenced to be deported, without being allowed to return to the country, their contract being cancelled without reimbersment. The Areopagus (Court of Cassation), the Empire's Supreme Court, rejected an attempted appeal of the decision. The deportation took place the next day, with the family being returned to their native land along with their son's remains (since the boy was not a Pelasgian citizen). This has outraged the local Muslim community. In the words of Harun Najab, the Imam of the Holy City's largest Mosque, who is currently in custody for his leading role in the recent bloody riots, the decision "is contrary to the most basic of Islamic doctrine since it does not enable the family of the dead boy to bury him as soon as possible." He also called it a "symbol of the Empire's hostility" towards his community.

A public statement by the Imperial Ministry of Justice responded by saying that "Mr. Harun Najab, who is himself being accused of a felony, should focus his community's energy on avoiding such disturbing and shameful incidents, rather than using the death of another innocent soul to fuel more violence." The Association of Islamic Reformists in Pelasgia, headed by the renowned Constitutional Law specialist and Islamic reformist Dr. Haidar Samara echoed the tone of this statement, while several prominent figures within the Empire's Jewry have not neglected to call on the Empire's Jews to avoid taking part in such clashes in the future. TERROR WAVE IN GREATER HIEROSOLYMA

Islamic & Jewish radicals attack city - Emergency measures
by Stergios Tivyraios, Philistaea correspondent

A few days after a riot in violation of a curfew instituted to stop sectarian violence between Jews and Muslims was put down violently, the Holy City has once become the sight of bloodbath, with multiple terrorist attacks by radicals on both sides taking place across the city. In Hierosolyma itself, Islamic Socialist radicals of the Islamic Socialistic Popular Liberation Front (Islamiko Sosialistiko Laïko Apeleutherotiko Metōpo - ISLAM) attacked several checkpoints on minor bi-roads across the city with explosives and hit-and-run gunfire, spreading death and chaos. On Iēsou Pantokratoros Street, which had been clogged with traffic after a driving accident blocked access to Vasileōs Anaxandrou Avenue, over fourty people died and many more were maimed, after a suicide bomber inside a nearby barber shop blew her self up, followed by a car bomb exploding and gunmen firing on the crowd and Police. An elderly couple and a young woman living on two apartments that the insurgents used were found brutally murdered by the authorities, during their investigation. In the entire city, over a hundred people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more wounded, with ISLAM claiming responsibility in a public leaflet which its members threw around the city. The group claims to be the 'legitimate voice of Philistaea's Muslims' and calls all those who share its views to rise up against Imperial authorities.

In the suburb of Makry Phroureio, Jewish insurgents, some of whom were found to have originated from foreign nations, attacked the Phylakes Mardochaiou maximum security prison complex. Imperial Police were able to hold off the attackers until reinforcements from an Imperial Land Army armoured division, which had been stationed nearby, were able to arrive and force the rebels away. The bodies of the dead insurgents bore armbands with the Star of David and a Hebrew inscription translating into "Jewish Defence League". The leader of the Jewish radicals, Rabbi Avraam Bakas, is being held in the prison complex temporarily, until it is time for him to be moved to Propontis to be tried by the Areopagus. These developments have shocked the Imperial authorities as well as the Pelasgian public. The Koinovoulio has approved an emergency measures package named 'Emergency Legislative Content Action for the Crisis in Philistaea' which has placed the Theme in a State of War, while the 13th Armoured Brigade (XIII ΤΑΜ), currently stationed in Tiberias, has been ordered to Hierosolyma to assist forces already deployed there in putting down any rebellious actions. All temporary work contracts with Muslim workers from abroad have been terminated, while all Jewish tourists in Pelasgia have been requested to report to the nearest Police department immidiately. Currently, all Jews outside of Philistaea have pledged loyalty to the Empire, while Muslims and Jews in Philistine cities other than Hierosolyma have been interned in camps outside their cities. We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks carried out in Hierosolyma by both the Islamic Socialistic Population Liberation Front and the Jewish Defence League. We will place both organisations on our list of terrorist organisations, meaning that their possessions in Eiffelland, if any, will be seized. When needed, we will be prepared to help the Pelasgians with eliminating these terrorist groups.
