Harriet Fauconberg,

With the permission of Folktinget and the newly elect Chancellor Bakken, it is my pleasure to pass word to your office that in light of our newly established and recognized relations, that the Kingdom of Østveg will commence in the opening of our embassies in the Friendly Confines. It is not expected that the Chancellor will cancel her plans to travel to Cantignia, but instead that she will change the emphasis and message of her visit. Most certainly she will be in contact with you via her own personal office.

From my own Royal Court, I find it a bold and invigorating experience to see the Austwegian Spirit of '52 spread and expand. Certainly the recognition of my Kingdom before the Engellexic people have extended similar blessings is a rare occasion in which we can only emphatically suggest that Oceania knows best. A phrase that I hope that the world shall no sooner forget, but even ingrain in their own minds for moral fortitude and good conscience.

I look forward to the future and most certainly expect to make a visit to Cantignia a priority. In such a light, I feel that perhaps it would be best to announce my own plans to travel for the 1954 rendition of the Cantigian Open.

Please send my regards to Her Rt. Honorable Chancellor North. Her personal strength and character is unquestionably inspirational to scores of women both at home and abroad.

Med Vennlig Hilsen,
Queen Inger Lise I

REPUBLICANS SEIZE ROYAL PALACE AND HOLD EX-ROYALS HOSTAGE

KRISTIANIA — The Election results of last week were seen as painful to many in the nation who had hoped that a Republican victory could spur real change. With the results keeping a more Conservative Coalition in government, Socialists and Republicans alike took to the streets in Kristiania after the vote in protest. Before the dust had settled it had been discovered that many of the protestors had stormed the Royal Palace.

There they have established barricades and demanded that the Queen abdicate. Many Austwegians automatically assumed they had newly elected Queen Inger Lise at gun point, but she does not live in the Royal Palace. Instead, the Royal Family of the previous era of Haakon V live in the Royal Palace as a courtesy of Queen Inger Lise. The group of disenchanted students have taken what they have and still made demands. The Ivernian based Princess Mary of Fey being rumored has having struggled and beaten.

Queen Inger Lise has stated she will not abdicate unless requested by Folktinget or the people in a plebiscite.

Chancellor Bakken has gathered with her cabinet at Dronningenfjorden Slottet to try to figure out how to peacefully solve the conflict. Thus far the Austwegian Army has surrounded the Royal Palace in an effort to contain the rebellion, or revolution, according to several prominent Republican Party members who have subsequently backed off of such claims in effort to remain in solidarity with the Government.

This so-called Republican revolution has not been popular with the people in Kristiania who have not risen up in arms in support of the movement as the leaders proclaimed they would. The Agder Succession Crisis having only completed a month ago, is still fresh in the minds of many who may wish to see some stability gather before questioning the fruits of the previous conflict.

While election results are still fresh, the divide is quite obvious, as the Republican Party did win the elections with the largest number of seats in the Folkting, suggesting that perhaps the party ought to have larger input on national affairs, and that this micro-revolution should tell Chancellor Bakken that she maintains a short leash in leadership if revolution could always just be around the corner.

Revolutionaries have stated that they will not be starved out, as the first to die will be the ex-royals in such an event. Additionally, the Army does not desire to level the building or attempt a full out assault, as the building maintains a degree of historical significance. Revolutionaries having raised a Red Republican banner over the building, the crisis has taken the center of debate in the capital city.

Many have wondered why the Royal Palace was so weakly guarded. The answer being that the Royal Guards had moved to guard the Queen at Dronningenfjorden Slottet and thus far no Guard contingent had been moved to the former Royal Residence. The Guard core having never been large enough to guard two locations. Additionally, nobody thought that the ex-royals would need much security seeing how they no longer were in power and lived quiet lives. Yet, Republicans have been in outrage over the free ride given to the ex-royals who they believe need to move out and get a real job. To suffer with the legions of people who are impoverished due to the errors of the previous regime.

It is expected that the Government will have an answer to the dispute, and hopefully soon, as they ill-want it to become a problem of international significance.

To the attention of: The Kingdom of ''Ostveg'' and it's Queen, H.R.H. Inger Lise

I believe it was a reporter for An Nuactan na hIvernia who asked the Queen herself whether or not a militia of trained and armed republicans would be pleased with a republic not occurring.
If you want to find a nation to blame for this situation, look no further than the 'allies' you cast around you. While they may try to assist you now, you must know that they're only goal is the spread of Republicanism through any means neccesary and includes violent action. Those nations are the same who gave that militia weapons and training.
A long time ago in the days of the great Haakon V, Ivernia, Great Engellex and the former Kingdom of Agderike; three neighbour-monarchies all decided to plan a mutual defence of our own territory. We Scanian nations would keep our own.

As the High King of Ivernia, Felix Uí Neill, I cannot stand to see crises after crises in the Gothic Sea. The High King is willing to extend an olive branch: That Ivernia and Ostveg renew the contract for self-determination, that we alone rule our territorial Gothic Sea's defence.
The High Kingdom of Ivernia is willing to work with Ostveg to stabilize the region with you. But only if you expel the far-out foreign republican masters who plan to force Ostveg along a certain path, rather than allowing your people to vote and decide for themselves, which they did, against republicanism.

On another, but related and serious matter, Princess Mary (ooc: Anna?) of Fey is an ex-Royal of Ostveg, but she is very much still a member of one of the Ivernian Royal Families, House MacSweeney. When she lost her right to the ex-throne of Agderike she retained her birthright as the first-born daughter of Duke
David MacSweeney, Duke of Vedrarfjord and Weasfjord, Lord of Storm's Castle. She is to become the heiress of the Duchy of Vedrarfjord and Weasfjord.
I understand that Ostveg is very keen to keep this a non-international matter but any harm to a member of one of the Ivernish Royal Families shall be a very international matter indeed. I recommend that Princess Mary of Fey is brought out of this situation as quickly as possible and returned to the High Kingdom of Ivernia.

This message was written on behalf of the High King of and Tara Castle

It has come to the attention of this infantry regiment stationed in Ulriken that there is trouble in Kristiana with republican revolutionaries. We are on standby to your government to assist in any way we can. Much of our administrative staff has left with the Navy upon lifting the blockade, this includes any civilian diplomats that may have come and our diplomatic staff have yet to arrive to reopen our embassy. I do not wish to see this come to a bloody end, especially when my own homeland sacrificed to assist in ending the crisis before it turned into a war. I offer myself to go in and negotiate with these misguided revolutionaries and speak to them free man to free man, to give a face to the allies that helped create a environment for freedom in Ostveg. I urge that you allow me to speak to them, I am confident that I can end the hostilities and keep anything terrible from happening.

The Republic strongly condemns this act by radical sectors of the republican party. Republicanism should never be used as a mean for terrorism. Frescania will use all within her power to make sure the constitutional order is safeguarded. We call on these radicals to surrender and fall behind the new democratic order.

It is the firm opinion of the Workers' Republic of Carentania, that this issue of political dissent and unrest is an internal matter for the Kingdom of Østveg. The new government must - and we believe will - work towards a peaceful resolution with the legitimate grievances of parts of its population. We will strongly object to and, if necessary, act against unnecessary and harmful foreign intervention into issues that are for the people of Østveg to decide and for them alone.

The Grand Duchy strongly condemns this move by revolutionaries to upset the balance of power between royals and commoners within the nation of Agderike. Violence done against ex-royals will not be tolerated.

The Empire Realm is concerned at the reignition of political trouble in Agder and Fey at the refusal within some quarters of recognition of the litmus test of public opinion which the recent exercise in elections were and which, whilst we do not recognise the exercise nor the attempt at casting aside history and reality is, nonetheless, an exercise healthier than that sought to be foisted upon the people by a narrow schism in the body politic.

We would much prefer quiet in this fellow and brother Scanian nation and shall endeavour to explore military measures if need be in the remit of better guaranteeing peace and quiet for ordinary people. But this would obviously hinge on the situation as it unfolds and whether the republicans and others committing to such acts as those described continue and also whether the situation unfolds into something much graver, although the situation is already laden with huge consequences.

The gross and unforgivable atrocities committed against the Royal Family of Agder and Fey is one that is condemnable in the most extreme language and protestation. The relatives of His Late Majesty Haakon, a cousin of His Majesty the King of Danmark, Agder and Fey, are in essence as much as part of the extended royal family as those within this kingdom are themselves and it is, as such, an attack upon our own royal family. I know from communication via the Statsminister, the head of government, that there exists immense anxiety within the Royal Household.

Whilst members of the Royal Family, the legitimate royal family of the institution of the monarchy of Agder and Fey, are expected to be subjected to gross personal harm due to the weak and miscalculating policies, or even deliberate slight, by the nascent regime headed by Fru Bakken, that has sought to take the place of duly legitimate process and harboured by those that favour illegality and see the current state of affairs as a mere stop-gap in order to expand republicanist ideals for their own sake, we cannot sit idly.

Upon consultation with Grand Dame Rasmussen, of the Royal Council of State resident within Agder and Fey, appropriate measures to safeguard the Agder royal family shall be communicated within forty-eight hours unless apology is received from Fru Bakken, appropriate measures are taken to protect the royal family, and if the appalling acts of the 'revolutionaries' are not stemmed and punished.

MEMO: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR
KINGDOM OF ØSTVEG

Esteemed Friend Colonel Chester Lewis III,

Unfortunately it will not be the policy of my Government to negotiate with terrorists and revolutionaries. These rebels will face the harshest of penalties for the crimes they have committed including kidnapping, trespassing and armed rebellion. It is the belief of my Cabinet and my Minister of the Defense that our current military strength in Kristiania is currently well capable of containing this small rebellion. Your hand of partnership in solving this crisis will not be quickly forgotten, and I am more than ready to summon you for your services should things grow out of hand.

Your friend and ally,
Solveig Bakken

HJ Westerveld,

This Government in reference and response to the demands made by the Royal Council of State, specifically Miss Rasmussen, dismisses as well as outright and publicly ignores these demands. The Queen of the Austwegians does not fall under the realms, laws and jurisdictions of any Crown of Agder and Fey. The people of Østveg certainly do not fall nor find themselves at the mercy of the whims of Miss Rasmussen.

Her Majesty's Government is in concurrence that harm to the former royals of these lands is regrettable, but surely unintentional as well. These former royals are guests within our new Kingdom and honorable persons. It is our utmost intention to see that they are freed with their livelihood.

Additionally, it is the intention and wishes of Her Majesty's Government to specifically iterate, that Chancellor Bakken shall not be issuing any apology to any foreign dignitary for internal affairs of this Kingdom. This is in relation especially to the Kingdom of Danmark which has refrained from recognizing the Kingdom of Østveg and its legitimacy. This goes without mention or regard to the factual basis of the established Agderiker Government in-exile that exists within the Danish realm, a subject which will undoubtedly sour any communication between our nations, regardless of the de facto recognition given to our Kingdom and Government.

We strongly condemn the seizure of the Royal Palace and the kidnapping of the Royal Family of Agder and Fey by radical elements. It is not a good sign that the new government of Østveg fails to keep its society quiet. We will keep a neutral stance towards the events in Østveg, but we emphasise the right of Danmark and Ivernia to intervene if needed for rescuing the relatives to their respective Royal Families.

There is no right to wage war upon other nations to ensure the security of relatives of the ruling class - for good reasons. Intervention against arbitrarily perceived threats of relatives of those in power would mean a perpetual state of warfare in Europe. The troubles in Østveg are an internal matter for the people of Østveg to resolve and warrant no outside involvement. A Danish intervention to protect the relatives of its royal family could well constitute a threat to the security of our own relatives: the working class of Østveg. Any clear thinking individual must realize that this kind of argument can only be led ad absurdum if thought through correctly and destabilize Europe - it is nothing more than the imperialist megalomania of European nobility that values the lifes of its own kind above that of the entire people of Østveg, whose security and rights any Danish intervention would jeopardize.

Carentania maintains the independence and sovereignity of Østveg in the strongest possible terms and calls upon the European community to respect that this matter is an internal affair of the Kingdom.

The United Republic feels the need to remind all communicating parties that Ostveg has recently signed a defense pact with this Republic and any incursion by foreign parties upon Ostveg's sovereign domain is an attack upon not only Sylvania but Frescania as well. It would be in everyone's best interest to refrain from interfering regardless of imagined relations to workers or royals.

DEN FORMELLE STATSBREV
FORMAL LETTER OF STATE
Fr. K. R. Haavi
Utenriksdepartment,
Kristiania
AGDER OG FEY
8e Marts, 1953

I thought it best to address you in this letter rather than in a press statement directed to what is called the Utenriksdepartment for want of surity of it being received directly by you though free from any degree of recognition of your claimed position nor that of the administration that seeks to and practices elements of every-day governance by mere virtue of being there, nor in recognition of the nascent structures of the state apparatus under the heading of Østveg, a name and state of affairs that remains unrecognised.

Yourself, as the international face of the seemingly gynaenocratic care-taker committee claiming the mantle of government which remains, in the present, extralegal under legitimate laws of the land, not the refashioned law as instituted under the remit of the junta, its existence on the ground does require it to at least provide some responsibility and also due care and attention for all of the people of Agder and Fey ~ if it is to even attempt claims at being proper ~ especially the members of the royal family. I am personally somewhat disappointed that rather than ensure that this simple expectation be met and all measures be enacted to provide decent and proper security for the royal family in totally with their standing that you failed to even meet this most significant task and I am left wondering that even if this cannot be successfully provided for what else is to be fall through the cracks. Even in its first days, it has stumbled and tripped flat face into the ground in its first test of respect and propriety which augurs ill.

It is very clear that the Committee ~ I shall withhold the term government ~ of which you are a member, took its eye off the ball but rather than hold up your hands and admit guilt and culpability for this outrage you have instead sought to dilly-dally and attempt to deflect attention in a fit of foot stomping and fist banging. I am not particularly impressed. Furthermore, your choice of words, whilst you are indeed correct and no doubt sincere in describing the royal family as honourable, invites significant questions when you simultaneously designate them as 'guests'. This is incorrect. The royal family are an intrinsic part of the fabric of the country much more so than, dare I say, HKH Princess Lovisa who, whilst being a member of the Suionian royal family and one we hold in high esteem, is only part of the fabric of the illegal regime and of the country in as much as it suits those that seek to hair brush inconvenient facts from the scene, gloss over realities, redraw history by banging oversized square pegs into round holes, and draw up a revisionist history to legitimise themselves, of which you are yourself are as guilty. I have not even yet seen an apology to the royal family from you, Fru Bakken or even anyone else of seniority for this woefulness and as such the regime must be held in low regard for their despicable and atrocious ineptitude and gross dereliction of duty. Formal acts and measures in this area would no doubt ease tensions and I can only hope they come soon and are full.

However, I am constantly reminded of the air of illegality, as per pre-standing law, of the Committee which you represent and those of its predominant international supporters, even if there is a degree, apparently, of the existance of the Committee reflecting elements of popular will. Whilst we subscribe to the popular will principle, and always did, I have sincere doubts that the version propagated by the Committee calling itself 'Her Majesty's Government' is the accurate one and that it only reflects partial reality due to the partiality of the Committee in wanting to spin its own raison d'etre. The Empire Realm cannot recognise this as it is simply incorrect and unbecoming with the simple support of legality being the standard that we hold steadfast towards. Anything less would be wrong. It is in this regard that we shall maintain recognition of the government-in-exile within Danmark as the legitimate authority under the Dual Monarchy and it is to that government that we shall seek discourse as to what the next steps must be from this kingdom.

But I have to say that whilst I hope that appropriate measures can be brought to bear to restore the dignity of the royal family, the inability or lack of will to do so can only increase calls within some of my compatriots who desire stronger action to be taken. Indeed, I can state that whereas Danmark has thus far been reluctant to be drawn into the affairs of Agderrige, there comes a time when defence of legality must be supported in measures beyond mere diplomatic wrangling. This may include the restoration of the government-in-exile to Kristiania and the proper legal apparatus to be instituted which, as may be, may lead to the renouncement of the claim of the throne by His Majesty King Frederik III of Danmark and King Frederik I of Adgerrige. But upon that we await consulations with the government-in-exile and the Rigskabinet.

In understanding,

ARMY BOTCHES RESCUE MISSION, 52 DEAD

KRISTIANIA — After weeks of crisis and limited negotiations, an explosion and gun fire illuminated the intentions of Her Majesty's Government once and for all. The end result was bloody and just by looking at the causality list, perhaps a failure.

For most of the week, the Army had agreed with the rebels to grant them food in exchange for the continued safety of the the ex-royal family, former Queen Maragret and Princess Mary, as well as their staff. It became quite apparent this spelled the possibility that either there was an intended all out assault of the building, or they had hoped they could wait out the rebellion and they would give themselves up.

Yet another plan had actually been hatched just hours after the seizure of the building by the Bakken Government. They planned to travel through the sewers of Kristiania and breach into the Royal Palace from below. Carefully working throughout the days, and avoiding nights in order to not make too much noise during sleeping hours, the Army eventually worked through the sewers and cut open various piping and dig their way up into the building. Setting explosives, to blow through the last bits of wood rather than using a loud saw which would've been difficult to conceal the noise, the Army climbed up into the Royal Palace and opened fire upon many of the rebels who were mainly students, but many of which likely having received training during the Succession Crisis.

The rebels not too terribly unprepared for any assault reacted immediately and gunfire erupted. As a captured student declared, "The gunfire was heavy and we were all scared for our lives, we kept hearing shot, shot, shot, shot, ping! Over and over again. We knew we had to keep firing, and there was screaming everywhere."

Despite this individuals' vantage point, his comrades weren't the ones doing the screaming. As the Army came through the floor boards is was often them getting shot. Only the initial group made it into the Royal Palace relatively unharmed. When news of the failure of the sewers got out, the rest of the Army stormed the front the door.

A guns fired without much regard of where the shots landed, included among the causalities were the hostages themselves. Several of the staff workers have are now in the hospital, three of the dead. The important figures, the former Queen Margaret took a bullet to her arm and was released from the hospital relatively soon thereafter. Princess Mary on the other hand took several bullets to her legs, but is expected to make a full recovery.

In the subsequent press conference Chancellor Bakken expressed extreme regret with the overall result of the operation but not with the principle, "If asked if I would make the same decision again, I would. 100% without a doubt. But I want more options in how our country can respond to crisis. So I will be begin immediately to find a better way to tackle rebellions and terrorist situations. I feel that the amount of causalities in this operation was unacceptable."

At least 35 Army servicemen are wounded, and 12 are dead. The rebels who survived the onslaught are to be tried for treason, which can be punishable by death. 37 rebels were shot dead. Some citizens have been critical of the speed in which the rebels received medical attention.

The United Republic condemns the decisions that led to this bloody outcome, the Bakken regime should have done more to peacefully resolve this hostage crisis rather than attempt to sneak up, fail and then wildly storm the rebels. We hope that the chancellor will learn from this and be more receptive to pleas for negotiation or accept the help of others who wish to negotiate for you. Let not your rule be marred by absolutes such as, "we shall never negotiate with terrorists." We pray for the dead on both sides and for the quick recoveries of injured royal family.

It would be wise to thoroughly investigate the events leading to this tragedy. BAKKEN TRAVELS TO SYLVANIA IN GESTURE OF PRIORITY AND SPECIAL IMPORTANCE

KRISTIANIA — Chancellor Bakken stepped foot on the Queen's airplane and set off for Charleroi. Her flight is to begin a series of visits to a dossier of nations which include Frescania and Cantignia. The importance of the Austwegian coined, "Anti-Danish Sea Alliance" triumphed her departure, as her first trip abroad will be to Sylvania, much like how Chancellor Braaten make Sylvania a priority for his short lived residency in the office.

Pundits have called the relationship across the icy northern waters, one of special importance and perhaps one of the more interesting developing relationships in Europe, as the Sylvanian Republic continues to expand its influence across the world.

She expects to meet with her counterpart, President Rygaard and share some time with Foreign Minister Viklund. Danmark is expected to be the most important item of discussion, as well as security for the region. She also plans to make a speech somewhere in Charleroi, to introduce herself and Østveg to who she believes are the most important people of the next decade.

Also important is that she formally plans to give documents on the Austwegian Jet Fighter program, although such documents are said to have been sent over weeks ago, closer to her election. Her goal is to portray Østveg as a respectable ally in the world, and a gracious friend. Friendship, might be the theme of her entire diplomatic trip as her visit to Cantignia will also focus on the idea, and perhaps give the Cantigian people a glimpse into the Austwegian character. A character she feels is highly compatible with the Oceanic nation.

Afterwards, there are rumors that she desires to travel to Eiffelland or Potenza in efforts to open up formal relations, although she has not confirmed this yet. It is possible this is highly dependent upon the development of politics back home in Østveg, as the Folkting is expected to try to push through various legislation on military and economic matters.

BAKKEN CUTS TRAVELS SHORT DUE TO DANISH SABRE RATTLING

KRISTIANIA — As soon as Chancellor Bakken's airplane touched down in Frescania, she had plans to leave. A quick hello and photographs were taken with President Rodriguez, before her aircraft was en route back to Østveg. As was probably discussed with her Frescanian counterparts, the Danish spy plane which fell over Sylvania has caused talk of war to erupt. Naturally, these words could simmer down as they were dealt with by Foreign Minister Kristin Ragnhild Haavi, but a Danish news report quickly changed the tone of all discussion and naturally sent the Chancellor back to Østveg.

The Danish reinforcement of 90,000 troops to the Færøyene, are huge numbers which have prompted immediate action by the Austwegian Government. A Government official on the condition of anonymity told us, "A troop movement of 90,000 is massive. This generally signals an invasion force and as such requires us to take this threat seriously."

In response, one of the two Austwegian aircraft carriers as well as their support vessels, has embarked for Sylvania in order to aid them should they fall under attack.

Chancellor Bakken has stressed that lack of relations with the Danes have made it difficult to understand their motivations. So that in order to protect Austwegian interests, she must act accordingly to Danish threats and troop movements. Although massive invasion forces aren't beyond the Danish Government, which sent a massive fleet of vessels to the Scandinavian sub-continent during the Succession crisis. Their actions, sparked immediate support for Queen Inger Lise and the Austwegian Government the subsequently came into place.

War isn't expected yet, and should things cool down over the next month, Chancellor Bakken has stated she will resume her tour to friendly nations.

RYGAARD TO VISIT AS BAKKEN PAUSES ON OCEANIA

KRISTIANIA — The escalated nature of affairs between Sylvania and Danmark seems to have quieted down a great deal over the course of the last week causing all nations involved to lower their threat responses. The Austwegian Naval Fleet on patrol in Storesjøen is said to be returning home for a debriefing. While troops on guard are returning to their regular patrol shifts. This all coming a day after Folktinget approved of Her Majesty's Government's request for a total of four new radar installations to be installed in southern Østveg and the eastern islands.

While Air force crews remain on heightened alert in watch for Danish spy planes, the nation as a whole can focus their attention on the first foreign dignitary to visit Østveg since independence. Sylvanian President and trusted ally, Sander Rygaard will be visiting Kristiania and meeting with Her Royal Majesty, Queen Inger Lise and Chancellor Bakken.

As the visit has come immediately after the supposed end of the Færøyene Military Crisis, Chancellor Bakken has decided to continue to delay her trip to Oceania to visit with Cantigian leaders. The news might prove worrisome to the Friendly Confines, but the Chancellor has urged the Cantigians not to worry. "I cannot forget about Cantignia, and naturally when business at home allows for it... Cantignia is the only place I'll see," she remarked to reporters who suggested she was snubbing the Cannies.

Queen Inger Lise apparently has a dutiful and lengthy list of items prepared for President Rygaard including a civilian parade, to be put on by the Kristiania Royal Sailing Club, which will work in tandem by land and sea to give President Rygaard his due welcome.

Austwegian support is expected to be large in this parade, in which large portions of city are expected to be shut down. Originally, planned to be orchestrated by the military, the Queen offered the Sailing Club as an alternative as Rygaard's arrival, "...should be a showing of peace and our civilities, not a display a of might."

Chancellor Bakken is expected to inquire President Rygaard on Polar region oil exploration and the possibility to find independent means for national defense.
