Gen. Laconi Executed along with other military commanders

Following the pullout of the disastrous campaign in Jurzan Secretary of War, General Ezio Laconi, was executed for failure to carryout the orders of the empire. Along with Laconi the other major military leaders of the campaign were summary executed, including generals Benito Al-Temiyat, Javier Haghio, Renato Paoli, Asdrubale Somayli, and Admiral Vitale Jovine. The execution was limited to the military leaders and not the civilian leaders in the Consistory. The government has refused to give any comment on the issue.

Emperor Names Prince Horace as the new Caesar

Today at the Palace of Blachernae, Emperor Waylon X named Prince Horace as Caeser. This title is usually given to denote the next emperor in the line of succession and de facto names the imperial heir apparent. Despite this modern way of viewing the title of Caesar in the Talemantine Empire in actuality it makes its holder junior co-emperor alongside the senior emperor. However, it has been centuries since a Caesar attempted to exercise imperial authority. While the laws in the empire still consider the Caesar as a co-emperor the tradition remains to denote the heir apparent of the throne.

Prince Horace Caesar

Now Prince Horace will assume the title his late father once held until his death in 2004. The last time the title of Caesar was given out was in 1986 upon the marriage of Prince Cecilio to Elisa von Nareath, Grand Duchess of Stockholm. Later this week Prince Horace will officially be invested with the title in an ancient ceremony in front of the Talemantine Senate. This will make Horace one of the most eligible bachelors in Europe. Security is said to be heightened for the event as the entire Imperial Family will be present at the Senate; including Prince Beniamino and family from Augsburg, and Prince Sebastiano from Eiffelland.

Empire signs new agreements with Umbazi

Meeting with Umbazi Ambassador Tejan Sankoh, Secretary of State Carmine Gavallo was able to secure a new trade agreement with the Himyar state. This economic deal incorporates a pledged humanitarian aid along with other aspects to assist the state of Umbazi. The economic deal will incorporate the following: 1) a free trade agreement between the two states, including a lowering of trade barriers by 25% over the course of the next five years, 2) Increase of oil shipments to the state of Umbazi making the Talemantine Empire a major supplier of oil to Umbazi, 3) a 600 million Lira (450 million$) in monetary humanitarian aid to Umbazi. Part of the Free Trade agreement will allow private non-profit organizations to send humanitarian workers to Umbazi to attempt to replace the aid workers lost following the deportation of Ascaloni workers. The Cecilio Caesar Memorial Foundation has already pledged to send over a thousand aid workers to Umbazi.

The economic deal was only one of two agreements signed today. The second agreement involved the sending of military advisers to help retrain the Umbazi army and airforce in new tactics of combat. This will help refit the Umbazi military to better deal with internal threats and if need be external threats. Also in this military agreement was an official Guarantee by the Talemantine Empire of the political and territorial integrity of the State of Umbazi.

Due to the closing of the border between Umbazi and Ascalon the shipments of aid will be hard to get into the Himyar state. Secretary Gavallo stated that they were in talks with the Kugelan Free State over transportation rights to Umbazi and possible further economic agreements. The Secretary is expected to announce the finalization of these agreements with the Southern Himyar state later this week.

Socialists Claim Electoral Victory!

Following yesterday's vote the Partito Socialista dell'Impero (Socialist Party of the Empire) candidate for Prefect of Talemaniki, Ruberto Morbidelli, was announced the winner. The Prefect is the Talematine equivalent of Mayor in many countries and the Prefect of Talemaniki is seen as the chief representative of the nation as a whole. The Talemaiki Prefect also serves in the Senate as Junior Consul after the emperor. With this election Ruberto Morbidelli is now second in charge of the Talemantine Senate. This campaign was long hard fight between the Socialists and the Imperialists for control over the Senate as the Prefect can call the senate to order to debate any issue. Traditionally the Senate has not frequently met going decades without ever being assembled except for ceremonial occasions.

PSE - Ruberto Morbidelli 49.3%
PIT* - Graziano Napolitano 48.7%
LIR* - Antonio Al-Asmari 2%

However, the election is not over. Graziano Napolitano has called for a recount noting that no candidate won an absolute majority and the closeness of the votes. Any candidate within one percentage point may call for a recount by law and if after the recount the results remain the same the election will be called. But if after the recount there is a difference of a half of a percentage point a run-off election will be called to be held before June when the new term begins. So the true question is if Napolitano can make the .5% threshold to gain a runnoff who will be the candidate to win over the Al-Asmari voters?

Outside Talemaniki the socialists didn't fair as well. In the many municipalities the Imperialists remain in charge. Of the 30 Plebeian senate seats the Socialist only garnered 10. Even in Talemaniki where the Socialist count their greatest victory the Majority of the city council remain in the hands of the Imperialists.

Political Fight Loams Over Talemaniki

Tomorrow the results for the recount of the ballets for Prefect of Talemaniki will be released by the Imperial Election Commission. From inside sources in the IEC and the Morbidelli Campaign, they expect the results to be outside the runoff threshold that Napolitano needs to force a runoff election for Prefect.

Should Morbidelli win it will cause a political storm in the Capital City. The fight will pare Morbidelli against Emperor Waylon X. For this anticipation we the Talemantine Chronicle will profile these two men.

Emperor Waylon X

Waylon X has been on the throne since 1943 when an attempted socialist coup left his father Florian III dead and the 15 year old the new Emperor. Since his reign began following the three year regency by his mother, Waylon X has shown his position as a stalwart opponent of socialism and its many forms. The emperor commands great respect in the country despite the occasional setback and disgrace seen in the Jurzan war. His power base, like most emperors has been in the military and the armed forces continue to support the ancient monarchy. Since his reign began the Senate was only called into session three times, once at the beginning to proclaim Waylon X’s ascension, to commemorate his wedding to Marie of Arendaal, and most recently to celebrate the 1400th anniversary of the house of De Vesci. Waylon X also has many ties to other European royalty such as his marriage to the aunt of the King of Arendaal and the closeness with the monarchy in Eiffelland.

However, the emperor is getting old. Waylon X celebrates his 83rd birthday this summer and is appearing to be losing his edge in politics because of it. Many political insiders expect the emperor to run over most regency powers to his grandson Caesar Horace de Vesci within the next year.

Ruberto Morbidelli

Ruberto has risen high from his beginnings as a university activist for the Socialist cause. His work and outspokenness on several social issues that many believe are largely ignored by the government. Not long after leaving school with a communication degree Morbidelli became a writer for the Socialist Party’s magazine/propaganda pamphlet and soon after was made its editor. Seizing on this young new voice the party leadership put him on a fast track to leadership. Two years ago the party central committee voted Morbidelli as its new chairman hoping to further the outreach to the young of the nation. At the age of 40 Ruberto Morbidelli is the youngest socialist leader in Talemantine history.

Like most socialist politician Morbidelli’s support lies in the lower income classes. Much of this support is limited to the urban areas in Talemaniki and the Eastern part of the country. Also if he wins the Prefect he will be able to call the senate to convene and possibly turn it into a true legislature to govern the nation.

It is unknown how history will pan it out, but it will certainly be interesting to see as a 40 year old socialist prepares to do battle with an 83 year old monarch.

Morbidelli WINS!

It is official Ruberto Morbidelli Will be the next Prefect of Talemaniki and the next Consul of the Senate. The Imperial Election Commission released the final tallies for the election.

PIT - Graziano Napolitano 48.70%
LIR - Antonio Al-Asmari 2.05%

Graziano Napolitano gave his congratulations to Ruberto earlier today after the results were announced conceding the race.

The Jurzani Republic extends its humble congratulations to Ruberto Morbidelli on his recent victory. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gained the blessings of President Zurab Nadarejshvili and Supreme Chancellor Faraj Khayrat on a decision to reopen communication and diplomatic relations with the Talemantine Empire. It is our belief, and hopefully it is shared, that if the Second Jurzani Republic and Talemantine Empire go into a period of cooperation it will lead to a much more stable and peaceful Himyar and can do nothing but benefit the people of both our nations.

Talemaniki Concerned About Gorno-Altai

Today Secretary of State Carmine Gavallo expressed reservations about the current state of Talemantine neighbor Gorno-Altai. The state recently began to exit a near state of constant civil war that has torn the country apart, after recently establishing a socialist government nearly three years ago. The conflict in Gorno-Altai is all but over as the rebellious faction, known as the Salvation Army, continues to survive in areas of the nation.

In an effort to ensure that the troubles of Gorno-Altai does not spill over into Talemantine territory the Secretary of War, Admiral Fabian Merici, announced that he would increasing the amount of troops on the Altaic border by 50,000 troops. Merici was confident that the increase of troops will prevent any rebel from Gorno-Altai from crossing the border into the Empire to escape the Altaic military forces.

The Consistory of the Empire is scheduled to meet within the next few days to discuss an aid package to Gorno-Altai.

The wish to assure the Consistory of the Empire that the mobilization of 50,000 isn't necessary as the Liberation Army and the ProNat have defeated the Salvation Army and only a few bands remain, in the Zamosk Peninsula in the eastern part of the country continuing to fight. There is no hope for them.
We also would like to say that the government has plans to farther stabilize the country and there is no need to worry.
